Vin Diesel är ett namn som ofta kommit upp i podden men trots det har vi hållit oss borta från hans filmer. I veckans avsnitt blir det ändring på det! Vi tacklar nämligen actionrökaren The Chronicles of Riddick.
Shelby Oaks is a new horror film written and directed by first time feature filmmaker Chris Stuckmann. It tells the story of a woman determined to find her sister who goes missing while investigating a mysterious abandoned town. It stars Camille Sullivan, Sarah Durn, Brendan Sexton III, and Keith David. It was executive produced by Mike Flanagan, who's known for directing Stephen King adaptations and other horror films. Before making the film, writer/director Chris Stuckmann was best known as a YouTube film critic. He utilized his platform and fanbase to crowdfund the production of Shelby Oaks. It combines elements of early YouTube, found footage, true crime documentaries, and narrative filmmaking to tell its story. The film was produced by our guest, Ashleigh Snead. She has been making independent films for over a decade and is the director of production for Paper Street Pictures, a production company based out of Austin, Texas. She lives here in Anchorage and was kind enough to stop by our studio to speak with ATMI producer Cat Whited about working on Shelby Oaks. In their conversation, Ashleigh talks about the movie's journey from a simple pitch to getting theatrical distribution, her love of independent horror films, and other projects she has in the works. They spoke on November 12, 2025. Host: Deacon Laurance Theme music is by Kendrick Whiteman with additional music from Devin Shreckengost. Video and audio production by Kendrick Whiteman and Nathan Pobieglo. Edited by Kaylee LaTocha and Vermillion Reed. This project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. We are gonna be splitting movies in two. That way we can do more longer content. this time we get way too little Keith David, a teleporting Judi Dench, and the most Tom Waits looking bad guy...possibly EVER.
Men at Work (1990) was chosen by co-host Chris, and it's a perfect fit for his love of oddball comedies from the VHS era. Written and directed by Emilio Estevez, the film was a true family affair — with Estevez not only helming the project but also starring alongside his real-life brother, Charlie Sheen. Coming off the back of their late-'80s fame from Young Guns and Wall Street, the pair teamed up for a buddy comedy that blended slapstick humor, blue-collar chaos, and a dash of political satire. Produced by Epic Productions and distributed by Triumph Releasing (a Columbia Pictures subsidiary), Men at Work was Estevez's second outing as a writer-director, following his 1986 drama Wisdom. The project gave him the freedom to craft a film that played directly to the chemistry he shared with his brother — the same mix of bravado and goofiness that made it a cult favorite among fans of early-'90s video store comedies.Filmed primarily around Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, California, Men at Work embraced the laid-back coastal vibe of Southern California. The shoot was relatively quick and low-budget by Hollywood standards, with much of the film's tone shaped through improvisation between Estevez and Sheen. The movie's soundtrack captured the spirit of the late '80s and early '90s, featuring a mix of surf rock, funk, and classic rock tracks. While it didn't make waves critically, Men at Work found a second life on VHS and cable television, where its offbeat humor and brotherly banter turned it into a nostalgic favorite. Today, it stands as a snapshot of a more carefree era in comedy filmmaking — a time when movies about two guys, a truck, and a ridiculous situation could carry an entire Friday night rental. If you enjoy the show, we have a Patreon, so become a supporter here.Referral links also help out the show if you were going to sign up:NordVPNNordPassTrailer Guy Plot SummaryThey're brothers. They're garbage men. And they've just picked up more than they bargained for.Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez star in the ultimate blue-collar buddy comedy — where trash day turns into doomsday. Between the laughs, the chases, and the chaos, these two underdogs are about to clean up the streets… one bad guy at a time.Men at Work — crime, comedy, and complete rubbish.Fun FactsMen at Work was originally written as a dark political thriller, but Emilio Estevez reworked it into a comedy after deciding it would work better as a light-hearted buddy film.Estevez reportedly wrote the first draft of the script in the mid-1980s, years before the film was made, while he was still working on The Breakfast Club (1985).The movie's tagline — "Garbage men by day. Detectives by night." — was coined late in production as a tongue-in-cheek nod to 1980s action clichés.Estevez cast real-life surfer and character actor Keith David as Louis Fedders, the paranoid war veteran, after seeing his intense performance in John Carpenter's They Live (1988).The garbage truck used in the movie became something of a collector's item among fans and was later used in several low-budget TV shows filmed in California.Charlie Sheen's character's surfboard was custom-made by a local Hermosa Beach surf shop, and Estevez let Sheen keep it after filming. The film's theme song, “I'm Gonna Use What I Got,” was performed by The Rude Boys, adding to the film's distinctive late-'80s funk-rock vibe.Estevez and Sheen performed many of their own stunts, including the beach chase sequences, to save on the production budget.thevhsstrikesback@gmail.comhttps://linktr.ee/vhsstrikesback

Right at the height of his '90's powers, Oscar-winner Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Inside Man, Blackkklansman) decided to direct and co-adapt this powerful crime novel from Richard Price (creator of "The Wire") about a murder investigation in Brooklyn which goes much deeper than any one could have expected. Among the prime suspects is Strike (Mekhi Phifer) who is a beleagured "clocker" which is another term for a middle-man drug pusher. This racket is truly taking its toll on Strike who wants to find an escape.....and on his tail is the lead investigator of this murder, Detective Klein (Harvey Keitel). Further complicating matters is that Strike's legit-working brother Victor (Isaiah Washington) becomes implicated and casting a shadow over all of this are the ruthless machinations of Strike's boss, the local druglord Rodney played by Delroy Lindo. What results is a searing, unflinching crime drama which kind of got lost in the shuffle upon first release but has endured over the past thirty years as one of Lee's most accomplished films. The stacked cast also includes John Turturro, Regina Taylor, Thomas Jefferson Byrd, and Keith David. One this rootin'-tootin' episode of HOW DO YOU DO, FELLOW KIDS? we're checking out the made-for-HBO western THE LAST OUTLAW from 1993 featuring a murderer's row of early 90s character actors: Mickey Rourke, Dermot Mulroney, Ted Levine, John C. Not only that, it was written by Eric Red (who wrote THE HITCHER and NEAR DARK) and directed by THE QUIET EARTH/YOUNG GUNS II/FREEJACK's Geoff Murphy and features plenty of ultra-violence in a (transparently) WILD BUNCH-inspired revenge tale. We haven't seen it in a while, but we remember Kurt Russell trying to figure out who is human and who is the alien. We remember an abundance of gore and fantastic, practical effects. Blood, violence, and a tension that ramps up until the final act are what we remember and hope John Carpenter's The Thing still emboldens.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
In this gripping episode of The Tracklist, hosts Daron Jenkins (@thedaronjenkins) and Chris Saunders (@chrissaunders_music) dive deep into Platoon (1986)—Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning war epic that redefined Vietnam cinema. We break down the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, anchored by Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings, and how it shaped the emotional tone of the film. From The Doors to Motown classics, we explore how Platoon's music elevated its brutal realism and gave voice to the soldiers' inner turmoil. We also spotlight the all-star cast—Charlie Sheen, Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Forest Whitaker—and Keith David who just received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame!Like and subscribe to our podcast wherever you listen/watch!Please...support the podcast by purchasing a hoodie or t-shirt! Hi there, friends! It's the third and final part of our "The Thing" series. And we're finally going back to 1982 to talk about the classic, John Carpenter's "The Thing", starring Kurt Russell. This one is a daunting movie to discuss, as we know there are a lot of huge fans of it, plus it's been talked about a ton on other podcasts. So we did our best to talk about it in the fun and loving way we try to talk about all the movies we watch. We also talk about a new horror store that recently opened in Burbank, Killer Fitness. And of course, stay tuned until the end to hear what Andrew chose for our next movie!"The Thing" is the second adaptation of John W. Campbell's novella, "Who Goes There?" It's a closer adaptation than the 1951 movie, retaining the alien's ability to imitate any living thing it comes in contact with, and how the men at Outpost 51 deal with it.Feel free to send us a message! On this special episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with executive producer and showrunner Latoya Morgan and lead actress Rachel Hilson about DUSTER, the new TV series from JJ Abrams and Latoya Morgan now streaming on HBO Max. Set in the 1970s Southwest, the show follows the first black female FBI agent as she takes on a crime syndicate by teaming up with a gutsy getaway driver. I'm an FBI consultant on the show. DUSTER also stars Josh Holloway as the getaway driver Jim Ellis and Keith David as the boss of the crime syndicate. After my conversations with LaToya and Rachel, I talk briefly about my role on the show as an FBI consultant and the significance of accurate portrayals of the FBI in books, TV, and movies, a major theme of my mission. They Live (1988)Directed By: John CarpenterStarring: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, Con Stapleton from DeadwoodJohn Carpenter is known probably more for horror flicks like Halloween, The Thing, The Fog, the Escape series (New York, LA) - and we're not saying that this movie is unknown by any means, but it's super prescient today. We're continuing WrestlerMAYnia with the Rowdy Roddy Piper flick They Live. Needless to say our minds are still blown. IMDB has to say this about it: "They influence our decisions without us knowing it. They numb our senses without us feeling it. They control our lives without us realizing it. They live." The Thing (1982) is on trial this week. Does it keep up appearances or is it a wolf in sheep's clothing? Gav defends his all-time favourite film with help from Mike, saying this is a masterpiece of sci-fi horror that has been often imitated but never bettered. Alex and Ausy are left cold however, citing a slapstick beginning to a film that then doesn't bother to create characters or tension, relying solely on special effects that are now outdated. All this with an impression of an incompetent Norwegian and a quiz all about the illustrious career of the man himself, Keith David. www.filmsontrial.co.uk/268 Special Guest: Mike.
