If you've been disappointed by keratosis pilaris treatment options + natural remedies -- you're not alone! Keratosis Pilaris (aka. Chicken skin)  is a complex, poorly understood skin problem that can make you feel really insecure (because of how it looks). It can also make your skin texture feel unpleasant + rough (potentially triggering skin picking). The most common keratosis pilaris treatment includes scrubbing off the involved areas of rough skin, but beyond that – you're probably already figured out the options are limited. There is no medicine for keratosis pilaris AND there's very little research on keratosis pilaris causes. That's because conventional medicine doesn't recognize it as a significant skin problem, even though the Cleveland Clinic states that "about 50% to 80% of teenagers and 40% of adults will develop" keratosis pilarsis during their lifetime. (ref) I previously discussed keratosis pilaris diet concerns HERE, and wanted to share more up-to-date info that will hopefully help you on your journey to ditching chicken skin! My guest today is Dr. Julie Greenberg, a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Registered Herbalist RH(AHG) who specializes in integrative dermatology, holding degrees from Northwestern University (BA), Stanford University (MBA) and Bastyr University (ND). She is the founder of The Center for Integrative & Naturopathic Dermatology Inc, a holistic clinic that approaches skin and hair problems by finding and treating the root cause. She has presented at multiple conferences and she teaches dermatology classes at naturopathic medical schools and is a highly sought-after speaker at conferences across the U.S. What keratosis pilaris treatment options have you tried? Ready for a high-level conversation about the connection between our gut microbiome and our skin? Today Erin sits down with Dr. Julie Greenberg, ND to get DEEP into this topic, exploring the effect of western diets, key roles of specific gut bacteria, common skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea, the relationship of candida and other fungal problems, and yes - Botox and fillers, too. If you’re a practitioner or clinician, or even someone who geeks out on nutrition information, you’ll want to bust out a pen and paper for some notes on this one! Dr. Greenberg delivers an outstanding, comprehensive take on this delicate connection that you’ll absolutely want to tune in for. Dr. Greenberg is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Registered Herbalist RH(AHG) who specializes in integrative dermatology. She is passionate about natural skin care and believes that many of today’s chronic skin diseases can be healed by using evidence-based alternative treatments. She uses her naturopathic training to address the root cause of dermatological disease by addressing inflammation due to gut microbiome dysfunction as well as a disrupted skin barrier. She also works with a group of integrative MD Board Certified Dermatologists through LearnSkin.com, a website for continuing dermatology medical education, where she’s the Program Chair of the Naturopathic & Integrative Dermatology Series, a 20 course AMA CE program. *Note: this is not a starting point for you if you’re just starting out on this gut-skin connection exploration! Sleep Eating [12:38] Paul says: Hi Robb, Long time fan. Been using the electrolytes with great success. I am a 35 year old, BJJ practitioner and am doing really well on a lower carb diet. One problem though. I sleep eat: Anything and everything, in the middle of the night, every night. Let me know if you have any ideas how to solve this, thanks, Paul   2. Eating Organs to Fix Certain Organs [15:48] Scotty says: I was wondering if you have come across any study’s that have taken someone with example a heart condition, and told them to eat beaf heart (or any animal) everyday to see if it had any reaction to their condition. Or a liver disease and they ate a bunch of liver and got better? Nutrition has become overly complicated now in some circles and it seems just so simple for your body to absorb those nutrients to heal itself. Any thoughts about this? Also let me know if you do answer this on one of your podcasts please as I don’t have time to listen to everything all the time as life just seems to get busier and busier. Thank you so much for everything you have done. You were one of the first voices I found that started my path to fixing my chronic headaches and digestive issues that I had for over 10 years. When massage, chiropractor, acupuncture, TMJ treatments, countless doctor visits all failed me, you pushed me in the right direction. Thanks again   3. Heart Palpitations [20:23] Bret says: Hi, Wolf Pack! Long-time listener (since the Greg Everett days), first-time Rebel and question-asker. I remember a few podcasts ago that Nicki mentioned (in passing) having to quit coffee due to heart palpitations. I've been experience palps for about 1 year and have quit coffee multiple times, with nebulous results: Once for 2 weeks, and once for 3 weeks (no significant decrease in palps either time). Now, alongside the 7DCT and Rebel Reset, I've given up coffee PLUS alcohol (I like a little red wine - weekends only) for the last 4+ weeks, with palpitation frequency and intensity dropping but certainly not eliminated. I'm going to keep up the quit (both coffee and alcohol) for a little while longer to see this thing through, but I'm wondering... If the quit doesn't eliminate the palps, are there any other "usual suspects" that I can bring in for questioning, i.e. other stuff to eliminate or add to my diet/lifestyle? Stats: - Age 53; height 6' 1"; weight 170 lbs; athletic build; very happily married - EKG and Holter monitor test results - normal; I'm thinking about an echo but they're pricey - Strict-but-not-perfect ancestral diet for the last ~9 years (thanks Robb!) - Active (workout 2 or 3 x / week, plus daily movement and/or mobility work) - Excellent sleep - Good community, but could improve - Recently upped sodium intake since learning about electrolytes from you guys. (I'll also be starting an LMNT regimen soon). P.S. - There might be a positional component to my palps (low-grade adult-onset POTS?), but it's difficult for me to QA/QC my own subjective symptom observations to determine that. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated! Keep up the UBERFANTASTIC work you guys!!! Bret   4. 13 Year Old Son's Keratosis Pilaris [26:22] Lil says: Hey Robb and Nikki, thanks for all of your great podcasts! I have been a follower of your work for 12+ years. My 13 year old son, Roman, has had quiet the health journey. A year and a half ago he came to me and said he wanted to "get healthier". At that time he was 5'3 and weighed 186 lbs. Both my husband and I live a primal life. We prioritize sleep, sunlight, movement, whole Paleo foods, social connection, limited screen time etc. At our home that is the norm. I am divorced from Roman's dad. Although he is aligned with our health values he did not support that in our kids. (Mostly out of convenience) When Roman was with his dad his diet mostly consisted of fast food! Roman's dad finally got on board when Roman himself showed interest in becoming healthier. We hired a Primal Health coach (we love you Amy Taft). Since working with her Roman is no longer pre-diabetic, has corrected his cholesterol issues, has grown more than 5 inches and has lost 40ish pounds. He feels great about who he is now! He has so much confidence in himself and his abilities! Such a wonderful transformation. Anyhow, since he was 5 or so he has dealt with Keratosis pilaris. We have tried AIP as dietary intervention along with many random suggestions found on-line. (Soaps, scrubs, etc) His bumps haven't gotten better with anything we have tried. The dermatologist we took him too said there isn't much to do besides heavy duty pharmaceuticals. I myself have tinkered around with carnivore. What do you think about Roman experimenting with carnivore on a short term basis? Or, do you have any other suggestions? Thank you in advance!   5. Protein Powder / Collagen [30:19] Alyssa says: Hi Robb and Nikki, Thank you for all the work you do to put out quality content for the healthy rebellion radio podcast. I’ve started listening only within the last few months, and I am hooked. I appreciate your valuable insight on everything from nutrition to politics and Medicare. I was listening to the March 4th episode and heard Robb say something about protein intake from collagen powder not “counting” toward total protein intake. I had to listen to that a few times...WHAT?! Insert “mind blown” emoji here. I did a little research and think I sort of understand why, but I’m also disappointed because collagen was my go-to protein powder for smoothies, coffee, etc. My question for you is - if collagen isn’t going to do the job, then what is the best, most bioavailable protein powder out there? I realize the protein you chew is the best kind, but I am looking to use it as a supplement to bridge the gap. There’s so much information on the interwebs, so I’m hoping you can help clarify. I am a 34 year old female, 5’9” and 140 lbs. I teach (hard...not gentle) yoga during the week and I also do a bit of running. I’m generally pretty fit and my meals are typically paleo. I don’t have any adverse reaction to dairy - we’re cool. Since listening to your podcast, I would like to try upping my protein intake and “watch the magic happen,” as you say. Thanks! Today I’m picking up where we left off on the Gut-Skin Connection. If you missed part one, be sure to check that out! Last week I talked about how the gut and skin are linked, the different mechanisms that link them and why a healthy diet for your gut is also a healthy diet for your skin. This week I continue the conversation and discuss leaky gut, specific skin conditions, how they often manifest and important things to consider for them. This episode is definitely for you or someone you know if you’ve been suffering from a common skin condition like rosacea, acne, eczema, keratosis pilaris or psoriasis. I also talk about histamines and candida, and weave information throughout this episode that’s really important to hear from a holistic perspective. In this episode: -Short recap of last week’s episode [1:40] -Leaky Gut: in a nutshell [6:09] -Symptoms of leaky gut, and how it can lead to inflammation anywhere in the body [8:36] -How to test if you have leaky gut [10:02] -Getting to the root of a leaky gut & how to heal it [13:19] -Rosacea and the common underlying gut problem often associated with it [20:20] -Acne: why it’s an inflammatory disease and the massive contributors to it (food & otherwise) [23:50] -Breaking down the specific ways specific hormones contribute to acne [27:50] -Eczema/atopic dermatitis and the two biggest contributing culprits [34:20] -The caveat with elimination style diets and eczema, and instances where I DO NOT recommend this as a way to suss out food sensitivities pertaining to skin problems [35:26] -Food sensitivity testing for eczema [38:41] -Why you can’t out-diet a gut infection [39:30] -How histamine intolerance plays into various skin conditions, and symptoms to watch out for [41:26] -Ways our guts are exposed to histamines, and how this can sometimes cause our “histamine bucket” to overflow [43:27] -Things that contribute to histamine sensitivity, and what you can do if you have histamine intolerance [45:28] -How candida is connected to histamines, eczema and other skin problems, why it can get activated and how it proliferates [49:22] -Keratosis Pilaris aka “chicken skin” and the most common driver of this condition [51:01] -Psoriasis and why treatment is really about immune stabilization vs. how to treat the skin [53:21] -How using an infrared sauna may help with skin issues like acne, fine lines, psoriasis or eczema [54:46] -Sneak peek for The Gut-Skin Connection, Part 3: the final frontier [55:36] Resources mentioned in this episode: Organifi - enter code FUNK for 15% off! http://www.organifi.com/FUNK FREE Digestive Guide https://mailchi.mp/erinholthealth/digestiveguide Wheat Zoomer - Food Testing https://www.erinholthealth.com/tests-and-consults The Role of Inflammation in the Pathology of Acne https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3780801/ Neuroendocrine regulation of sebocytes – a pathogenetic link between stress and acne https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15507110/ Lists of foods cross-reacting with pollen http://www.foodallergens.info/Facts/Pollen&Food/Which_Foods.html Listen: Episode 67: Tips for Coping with an Autoimmune Flare Up Read: https://www.erinholthealth.com/erin-holt-health-1/tips-for-coping-with-an-autoimmune-flare-up How to Test for Autoimmune Triggers & Root Cause https://www.erinholthealth.com/erin-holt-health-1/2019/7/17/how-to-test-for-autoimmune-triggers-amp-root-cause Beyond the pod: Follow Erin on Insta https://www.instagram.com/the.funktional.nutritionist/ Healthy Skin http://www.ErinHoltHealth.com/SKIN Eat to Achieve - move the needle on skin/acne https://www.erinholthealth.com/eat-to-achieve Carb Compatibility: if you know you have high blood sugars (dial in macros a bit more) https://www.erinholthealth.com/carb-compatibility-project Your Hormone Revival™ https://www.erinholthealth.com/hormones ***Questions about histamines & histamine issues? Siobhan Huggins is a fantastic nutrition and health researcher, but she got her start from a personal experience transforming her own health. Here, she shares her story of overcoming depression, anxiety, hypertension, and many more ailments. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/siobhan[2:45] Siobhan was an active, athletic child. At six years old, she had a six pack. However, she became depressed at the age of 10 or 11. After that, she started gaining weight and stopped many of the physical activities she used to enjoy. [3:50] By the time Siobhan turned 18, she was obese, hypertensive, and suffering from depression. [5:30] At 18, Siobhan was 5 feet, 1 inch tall, and she weighed 240 pounds. [6:15] Siobhan had tried using exercise to ameliorate her depression, but the depression remained. [7:30] Siobhan views her depression as having metabolic origin. “I was likely depressed because I wasn’t unhealthy.” [8:15] Siobhan tried calorie restriction, but it did not work well for her. [9:30] In late 2016, Siobhan’s mother suggested trying the ketogenic diet. [10:45] In two months on a ketogenic diet, Siobhan lost 20 pounds and her joint pain went away. [12:05] “It was the food which had put my depression into remission.” [12:25] “I’ve lost 80 pounds since I started the diet. I’m no longer hypertensive. I’m no longer depressed. I no longer have joint pain. My skin is so much better. Like, everything is just better.” [14:00] Siobhan describes some of the social anxiety she used to have, including specific conversations with her father which triggered negative emotions. [16:00] Siobhan grew up looking at depression as something genetic and inescapable. [18:00] Siobhan noticed that as her depression lifted, it gave her the opportunity to meet many other friends, as it enabled her to move away from negative self-talk and get to know others (specifically, at keto conferences). [21:00] Siobhan sometimes notices aspects of her depression returning if she accidentally eats certain foods. She took that to another level with a High-Carb Experiment. [22:15] Siobhan did a High-Carb Experiment. For the experiment, she ate high-carbohydrate, low-fat (the opposite of her typical low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic carnivorous diet). She ate all whole food carbohydrate sources. The experiment was hyper-caloric. The effects of this experiment were very negative physically and mentally, and the after-effects lasted for months after the experiment. “It took two months to get back to normal.” [27:45] Siobhan’s experiment had a remarkable impact on her frame of mind and her physical health. And the only thing that changed during the experiment was the food she ate. [34:00] What foods did Siobhan start eating to initiate her positive health transformation? [41:10] Siobhan initially started eating a carnivore diet as an experiment, but she had such great results from it that she has stuck with it for approximately two years now. [43:00] What were the timelines for Siobhan’s improvements in depression, joint pain, skin health, and hypertension? [47:00] Siobhan also has had a great improvement in her menstrual cycle and greatly reduced cramping. [55:45] Now that she has improved her health, what is one thing Siobhan enjoys doing that she couldn’t do before?

If you've been really frustrated with that chicken skin (also known as Keratosis Pilaris), you're not alone. There's no medication for it, but there is a way to get rid of KP naturally. There are a few important considerations though which I want to highlight for you today. I'm sure your doctor has really only said that this is a skin problem. But the truth is, Keratosis Pilaris is actually a symptom of something else! Fortunately, you've got options to support your skin both with diet tweaks and supplements. In today's episode, I'm sharing what you need to know to get rid of Keratosis Pilaris naturally! In this episode: Why Keratosis Pilaris is not a skin issue The importance of Vitamin A for your skin and other body systems What's the best test? Keratosis Pilaris diet recommendations Supplements for Keratosis Pilaris Quotes: If you have struggled with Keratosis Pilaris, know this — you don't have a skin problem. You have a gut problem. KP is a symptom of something else directing you to investigate. And that something else happens to be low or deficient Vitamin A status. To up your Vitamin A game in your diet, the easiest and most obvious answer is to add sources that contain it! These foods include liver and cod liver oil, both of which give you way more than your daily value of active vitamin A. You can also choose from other food options that offer a much lower amount but could still be really helpful such as king mackerel, salmon, Bluefin tuna, goat cheese, and butter. Beta-carotene is not the same as active Vitamin A and requires work on your body's part to make that conversion happen. Not everyone can easily make this conversion.

Registered nurse Wendy Pagaduan had suffered from eczema and keratosis pilaris (two common, often embarrassing skin conditions) since childhood. Prescription medications helped her skin, but it often took weeks for the medicine to get her inflammation under control. So Wendy decided to take the bull by the horns and find a way to heal herself. She started researching coconut oil and essential oils and found that her research kept leading her back to a taboo subject for those in a medical profession - cannabis. After initially being resistant to learning more about the plant, she opened her mind and dove into the research. What she learned convinced her that cannabis has many medical properties, and she began incorporating cannabis into her product line at Clean Coconut. Pinks Boutique Podcast with Kirstie & Luke Sherriff

The annoying pimples on the back of your arms are called Keratosis Pilaris. Even though there is no definite cure for it there are a few ‘Organic' steps you could add to your normal skincare routine to help getting rid of it. The first step you should take is having cooler showers. I know, it's probably not what you wanted to hear, especially now in the colder weather but hot water can change your skin's sebum production which could aggravate the bumps on your arms. Another step: replacing your regular market shower gel to a certified organic one. There are a lot of ingredients, such as surfactants, in the main stream shower gels that will dry your skin out.. Stay hydrated. You need to drink loads of water every day to keep your skin always hydrated. Exfoliating is crucial. It wouldn't be a bad idea to use your clarisonic to try and break the dead skin cells. After you've exfoliated in the shower instead of drying your arms completely leave a little bit of water and put moisturiser on top of it. The goal is to trap as much water into the skin as possible to keep it always hydrated. Nothing But The Truth. Pinks Boutique is an award-winning, eco luxe skincare line used by professionals. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks! Let’s get started! Anne: Dr Cabral, I just started into a new case of daily nutritional support. I buy the 6 and get 2 free amount every several months. I started with a 2 week detox and have continued for the last 14 months with a shake for breakfast, plant based lunch and reasonable dinner. I have lost 40 pounds and went from 160 to 120 #. So thrilled with my new me! Thank you! I just am disappointed again with the flavor change of the daily nutritional support. I got a batch a half year ago or so that was tasteless and I found out the stevia was left out. My next batch was back to great taste. Now this new batch is pretty tasteless again and wondering what the difference is now? I’m mostly disappointed with the inconsistency of the product...it is very expensive for me to buy and I’m hesitant to keep purchasing it if the flavor keeps changing. Madison:  Hi there! I heard of your podcast via Melissa Ambrosini, and it came at the *perfect* time. After running a stool sample + blood work with my local chiro and finding klebsiella pneumoniae and microbial yeast overgrowth (candida). We did a standard treatment he always prescribes for this, cut out kombucha and I started eating all foods (I'd been gluten/dairy avoidant for years, thinking it was a dairy allergy). Things got better until they didn't... and now, 6 months out, have worse abdominal bloating and discomfort than before. (I'm talking side/liver pain, terrible + embarrassing gas, discomfort and going from loose stools to constipation and back again. IBS seems to be the thing all the doctors are saying, as I can't trace *one food* that causes an issue consistently. It's dairy, sometimes. Smoothies, sometimes. Greens, sometimes. Wheat, sometimes. Things really flared up after traveling to Australia and eating the airplane food. I feel strongly after listening to your podcast that your candida protocol would serve me well! I don't think it's just IBS, especially after having this testing. Plus, I was on a z-pack 3-4 x a year, *every year* as a child, on antibiotics for acne and birth control for a few years too. My main question is: do I need to do more testing since it's been 6 months? Or am I good to purchase the full protocol based on the blood work and stool samples I already have? I'm open to applying to work one on one, however know it's a large financial commitment and if I already have the tests, it might not be necessary! Thanks so much for taking the time! I look forward to completely healing! -Madison P.S. It's worth mentioning that diverticulitis also runs in my family, and almost everyone has gut issues. It *could* be that too? Tiffany:  I am seeing a Naturopath in Atlanta about my fatty lipomas under the skin. She seems to know what she's talking about and after listening to several of your podcasts, I think she has put me on the right path. I would love to know if you have had experience with lipomas and have successfully treated them? I am 45 y.o., 133 lbs, and work out 5 times/week. I am "healthy" by western medicine standards, but have had gut issues and am now on Dr. # 4 trying to figure out what's causing the lipomas to appear. Dr. Kate Brooks says they are related to blood flukes, and immune/gut/inflammation issues and I have been on a host of supplements and minerals for the last month. I hope this will work, as I'm spending lots of $$$ on these supplements (none are her own brand. she recommends different ones). Stephanie:  I'm writing in about my 9 year old son. He has a bad case of Keratosis Pilaris. I searched previous podcasts for Keratosis Pilaris but couldn't find any so I'm here asking your expertise. He recently finished your children's CBO protocol and followed it up with the gut rebuilding. The bumps on his arms are a lot better but the ones on his legs almost look worse. He had a history of antibiotics as a child BC of kidney problems (which is why we chose to do the CBO protocol). Wondering if this is diet related or what we can do to clear it up? Thanks so much for your time! Wouldn’t keto be better? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Will, I've been binge listening to your show since October and have finally caught up. I love learning about all of the new things that Dr. Will talks about. Last week, my daughter fell at school and bumped her head. Her pediatrician said that she had a mild concussion. She sent me home with the protocol below to follow. I thought it was interesting that they advised us to feed my daughter lots of carbohydrates. I would think that keto would help decrease the inflammation and improve her brain function from this traumatic injury. What are your thoughts on this protocol? BTW, my daughter is doing okay now. Is it possible to feed my healthy microbiome with only 10g vegetable carbs per day? Hey guys, I have questions about how to best maintain my healthy microbiome while on the keto diet. I have researched this topic extensively and keep doing the math. My hunger is minimized and blood sugar is better controlled by counting TOTAL carbohydrates aiming for around 20g daily, including my vegetable intake. I never get more than 10g vegetable carbs per day. Is this enough for me to feed my good gut flora? I take probiotics and have heard that without fiber the bad bacteria grow and will even start snacking on the stomach lining. Any thoughts? Thanks! Pat 2. Why did my Keratosis pilaris condition (with skin flare-ups and spreading across my body) become worse when I became keto-adapted? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, As a T1 diabetic for three decades, I’m constantly working on ways to control this disease. Keto has been a tremendous help over the past three months of being strict with it. I recently noticed a big flare up of my Keratosis pilaris (KP) and it’s spread to my thighs and calves when it has remained mostly on my arms since I was diagnosed. A clean diet is supposed to help improve KP, but this seems to have gotten worse than ever before. Is this because of my autoimmune disease or could it somehow be related to keto? I’ve tried dry brushing, oil pulling, and more, but nothing is helping. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks for your great podcast! Leigh NOTICE OF DISCLOSURE: Paid sponsorship 3. Will taking ascorbic acid as a supplement to my keto diet to help manage my Lyme disease actually block my ability to make ketones? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I recently embarked on keto and have reached a state of nutritional ketosis. I would like to add in megadoses of non-GMO ascorbic acid as a supplement to my keto diet since it helps me with the symptoms of chronic Lyme disease. However, in my research about this, I’ve learned that ascorbic acid is biochemically similar in nature to glucose and the body treats it as such. Will taking this interfere with my desire to produce ketones? Kind regards, Elisa KETO TALK MAILBOX – Would the increase in blood ketones and decrease in blood sugar levels after switching to a mostly plant-based keto approach be from the microbiome changes? Hi Jimmy, I want to share this with you because I find really interesting what happen with my numbers after doing a ketogenic diet with lots of vegetables and only eggs as my fat and protein source. I was surprised to find that my blood ketones went up considerably around 2.0 mmol/L in the morning with blood sugar levels in the low 70’s eating this way. Previously on my ketogenic diet, I’d see closer to 0.5 blood ketones and blood glucose levels in the 90’s. Do you think this very positive change in my numbers is a direct result of embracing a mostly plant-based ketogenic approach that fed into changing my microbiome for the better? I really admire the work you guys are doing and keep it up!
