There are incredible non-invasive or minimally invasive techniques to restore joint health and avoid surgery. We will explore Dr. Bianco's path and experience in this amazing field of joint restoration and offer you simple steps that you can engage to ease pain.Upfront summary: 1. Modern technology such as stem cells and exosomes allow us to accomplish results that weren't available 10 years ago.2. You can rebuild, restore and regenerate joint health in ways that surgery cannot, such as restoring cartilage. 3. Everyone over the age of 50 has some degree of arthritis but not everyone feels pain. Having arthritis and having pain are not synonymous.4. We are going to discuss the differences between these injection therapies:· PRP – Platelet Rich Plasma, an older technology using your own growth factors.· Stem cells & exosomes offer a huge magnitude of difference over PRP and supply true healing power.· Prolotherapy – stimulates the body's natural repair process.· Ozone stimulates 3 modes of action: mitochondrial energy, detoxification, and immune system stabilization and support. It also works to animate stem cells for repair.5. Adjuncts that support and amplify these injection therapies:· Peptides – BPC-157 is a natural occurring protein that stimulates a sharp rise in repair molecules VEGF, Factor VIII, collagen, and CD34.· Glucosamine & Chondroitin – stimulates chondrocytes to generate new cartilage and create hyaluronic acid for lubrication.· MSM – antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, makes cartilage stronger.· Boswellia & Curcumin – reduce inflammation like NSAIDS but without the side effect and danger.· Joint & Body Collagen (HippEvo) – Fortigel and Tendoactive are proven elements to strengthen joints and reduce inflammation.· Hyperbaric Oxygen chamber at Huber Personalized Medicine – doubles the speed of repair for a quicker return to action. · Red light laser therapy – mitochondrial stimulation to augment repair energy

The impact of amyloid beta and TAU proteins on Alzheimer's pathology. Differences in Alzheimer's risk among different ethnic groups with APOE4 with emphasis on the importance of cholesterol levels as a risk multiplier. Advice for a listener's husband dealing with chronic back pain and sciatica Dr. Dawn presents a basic checklist for evaluating back pain symptoms and determining the need for urgent medical intervention. Potential causes are discussed such as spinal nerve compression from various sources. In this case, Dr. Dawn made a specific suggestion of McKenzie exercises and emphasized the importance of seeing a sports medicine doctor or physiatrist for a comprehensive evaluation. Dr. Dawn responds to a caller about managing knee osteoarthritis The role of glucosamine, chondroitin, and topical diclofenac in treatment. Discussion on non-pharmaceutical approaches like heat application and massage. Potential interventions like steroid injections, hyaluronic acid, platelet rich plasma and their benefits and risks. Dr. Dawn answers a question about dietary oxalates and their impact on kidney stones She emphasizes the importance of the oxalate content in foods and its limited role in kidney stone formation. She emphasizes the importance of hydration and maintaining a healthy microbiome. For specific dietary guidelines on oxalate in foods she suggests using oxalate.org. A concerned parent asks about aluminum and other vaccine adjuvants like formaldehyde for their infant's 2 month well child visit She expresses conflicting fears of being mischaracterized as a vaccine denier by merely expressing concern about vaccination for her infant. Dr. Dawn provides a breakdown of the necessity, immediate urgency and risks of each recommended vaccine (Hepatitis B, DTaP, Polio, Hib, Pneumococcal, Rotavirus) and suggests a social contextualization strategy to perhaps delay Polio, rotavirus and Hep B in this family's social context while emphasizing the importance of certain vaccinations to prevent serious illnesses. Dr. Dawn cites intriguing ambiguities in the literature that support the counterintuitive idea that smaller doses of aluminum may have a greater accumulation in tissues of brain and reproductive tissues than larger doses, and promises to research this further in a future program.

Is dog arthritis treatable? Link: https://rankingmastery.com/edit_questions.asp?action=info&id=1482&a=9156&p=1310 Answer is: There are multi-modal ways of treating dog arthritis. It's not just one thing and I'm going to share with you a few things to help you if your dog is showing signs of arthritis. One of the things you can do is to control your dogs' weight. First of all, let me tell you that sadly dog arthritis is not curable. The good news is that it is treatable. The primary goal of any kind of arthritis treatment for dogs is to control pain, reduce inflammation, improve your dog's quality of life, and probably most important, is to slow the progression of the disease. So many dogs these days are overweight. If you're like me, you like to spoil your dog the way I spoil my dog and I think I'm doing something great for him. I give too many table scraps. That's my bad. Hopefully, you're not doing that too. You can give your dogs treats, but you need to control their weight. Think about it this way. If you have a pug that weighs 40 pounds and your dogs' normal body weight should be 30 pounds. That's a 25% increase in weight. Imagine if you were carrying around 25% more weight on your body and what that would do to your joints and the strain that it would put on you overall. It's really super, super important that you control your dogs' weight. The other thing that you can do is control the exercise. Sometimes we think when our dogs are slowing down or just not really wanting to go for walks, exercise, or play anymore, or we think that they're in pain, the first thing we do is we think we need to keep them still. That's the worst thing you can do. You need to keep your dog exercising so that you can keep their joints mobile, keep them lubricated and not let them get stiff. The most important thing that you can do is to put your dog on a great supplement. Supplements come in all different shapes and sizes, with different ingredients. At Peppy Paws Furever we have an awesome, amazing supplement called Peppy Paws Hip and Joint Care for Dogs. You might be asking, what makes our supplement better than others? First of all, we have three major ingredients that combined really help not only reduce pain, but help prevent the progression of arthritis, which is super important. This will also give your dog back its quality of life. The ingredients are Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM. Not only do we have these three ingredients, but we have an extra-strength formula. This is going to make the results last longer, and you're going to get faster results. The most important thing you can do to help your dog get back the quality of life that they deserve and that I know as a dog lover and dog owner, you want your dog to have, is to get them on a great supplement. To find out more about our supplement go to www.peppypawsefurever.com. You can ask me any questions there and let's continue the conversation. How do you know if your dog is suffering from joint pain, arthritis or is it just a sign of aging? Link: https://rankingmastery.com/edit_questions.asp?action=info&id=1282&a=9156&p=1309 Answer is: Is your dog showing less interest in just playing? If you have another dog at home, are they not playing as much together anymore? When you grab your dog's leash, is your dog still running to the door knowing that it's "w time"? That's what I say with my dogs "It's w time!", it gets them very excited. If I say the word "walk", they're completely out of control. If your dog has lost interest in going for a walk, that might be a sign that your dog is suffering from joint pain. Basically if your dog is slowing down, losing interest in playtime, losing interest in their walks, maybe it's even just showing signs of having a more difficult time getting up and down the stairs, jumping up on the bed or jumping up on the couch. Those are all signs of dog joint pain, which is typically an indication that your dog has arthritis. What can you do to help your dog? That's what we really want to know as dog lovers, right? We see that our dog is suffering, we see that our dog's in pain, we noticed that our dog's quality of life is not what it once used to be. As a fellow dog lover like yourself, what we want most for our dogs is to have the greatest quality of life, to run, play and enjoy life like they're two years old, forever if we could do that. Let me share with you a couple of things that you can do to make sure that your dog is suffering the least amount possible with dog joint pain. There are things that you can do to help alleviate the pain. One of the things you can do is really just make sure your dog is the proper weight. If your dog is overweight, they're putting much more stress on their joints, which is going to make their pain worse. If you're like me and you've been rewarding your dog far too often with unhealthy treats (yes, I'm guilty), your dog could have a weight problem and that's going to just make the joint pain worse. I'm not saying that you can't give your dog treats anymore. Just make sure that you choose something healthy and maybe limit the treats. Even though earlier we talked about your dog not being enthusiastic about going for a walk, it's super important that you keep exercising your dog if you can. If you don't, and your dog's just sitting around on the couch all day long, their joints are going to get more stiff and that's going to cause more pain. I know that you love your dog. The last thing you want is to do something inadvertently that's going to cause your dog more pain. If you think your dog is suffering from dog arthritis or showing signs of having joint pain, the best thing you can do is to get your dog on a supplement and not just any supplement. All supplements are not created equal, so at Peppy Paws Furever we have a supplement called Peppy Paws Hip and Joint Care for Dogs. It has a combination of extra-strength ingredients of Glucosamine, MSM, and Chondroitin. These ingredients are known to work together to help lubricate your dog's joints, alleviate pain, and slow the progression of dog arthritis. Our extra-strength formula is going to help the supplement work faster and have a longer-lasting effect. I know if you're watching this video you want to help your dog, right? Go to my website www.peppypawsfurever.com and ask me any questions you want so you can provide your dog the greatest quality of life. Take care and have a great day. Can dogs get arthritis? Link: https://rankingmastery.com/edit_questions.asp?action=info&id=1281&a=9156&p=1307 Answer is: In fact, four out of five dogs over the age of eight will have some type of joint pain in their life. You as a dog owner may not even recognize that your dog's in pain because dogs are fantastic at masking their pain. Here are some things that you can look for. If your dog is showing less interest in playing, maybe not running to the door when it's time to go for a walk, having a little harder time jumping up on the couch, getting up on the bed, or just going up and down the stairs, those are true signs that your dog is or may be suffering from joint pain. I know as a dog lover myself, it's super sad to watch your dog lose their quality of life, their joy of playing, and just the energy that they once had. I'm here today to tell you that there are some things that you can do to help your dog if you're seeing the signs that your dog is suffering from joint pain, which is likely caused by dog arthritis. One of the things you want to do is make sure that your dog is getting the proper exercise and is not overweight. It might sound counterproductive to exercise your dog when they're suffering from joint pain but the truth is that the more you keep them moving and their joints are moving, the less likely that your dog is going to end up with stiff joints, which is going to help them in the long run with their joint pain and their arthritis. Here's the number one thing you can do if you notice that your dog is suffering from any of these symptoms. The best thing that you can do is to make sure that your dog is on a fantastic supplement. At Peppy Paws Furever we offer a hip and joint supplement for dogs that include Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM. These ingredients work together to not only help build up the fluid in your dog's joints, but also helps to alleviate pain and just basically combat the progression of your dog's arthritis. As I said earlier, there isn't a cure for dog arthritis, but there are ways you can treat it to give your dog back the quality of life that I know as a dog lover yourself, you want your dog to have. If you want to see your dog running around again, playing like they are two years old, playing fetch, going to the dog park, wanting to go on their walks again, then my suggestion is that you get your dog on a great supplement. If you want to learn more about our supplement, please go to peppypawsfurever.com. If you have any questions go to my website and let's continue the conversation there. In episode 70 of HealingMatters, Jason Eagle talks about the top 10 Natural Health products used in America. Why are we using these products/Why do we need these products? What is missing? What should you take to be healthy? 1. Cod Liver Oil: Like it's name states, Cod Liver Oil is made from the liver's of Cod fish. But did you know there are many other superior fish that make superior fish oils? Fish Oil is a fat. It helps reduce inflammation. It also helps reduce joint pain and it's good for your brain. Your body NEEDS oil/fat! Other Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) are DHA, EPA, GLA, CLA, and Omegas. 2. Glucosamine: Glucosamine is found in cartilage. It helps lubricate the joints and it aids in digestion. 3. Echinacea: Echinacea decreases infection and protects against cold. It's also an antiviral. You'll see it used in combination with Sambuca or Elderberry. Echinacea is also known as Purple Coneflower. Grown some in your garden! 4. Flaxseed Oil: Flax seed can be taken as an oil or as a seed. If you use it in the seed form, you are also getting the fiber. Fiber will help aid digestion but your brain, joints, and metabolism may also benefit from the oil. 5. Ginseng: There are three types of Ginseng. It's good for your whole body that's why the root looks like the body. It is an adaptogen and can help increase energy and stamina. 6. Combo Herbs: Combo herbs are just that, a mix of many different herbs in one capsule. They are normally blended to help specific problems like boosting the immune system, healthy lungs, and assisting digestion. 7. Ginkgo Biloba: Ginkgo Biloba is an edible nut from the oldest surviving tree species. The fruit is very smelly but the nut is like a delicious little jelly bean! It aids the brain, memory, and increases the blood flow. Ginkgo flavonoids cross the blood brain barrier. Therefore, it can help with concussions. It's often combined with St. John's Wort to decrease anxiety. 8. Chondroitin: Chondroitin is made from cartilage. It's normally combined with Glucosamine. Chondroitin can be found in Bone Broth, menudo, homemade chicken soup. It's great for the skin cells, nerves, cellular membrane, joints, cartilage, and wrinkles. 9. Garlic: Good old Garlic! It's a blood thinner and fights infection. 10. CoQ10: Coenzyme Q10 can be found in many natural foods. It's great for your heart and cardiovascular system. It increases Cellular Energy and helps rebuild the mitochondria so they can produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP) or ENERGY! CoQ10 helps support the Immune System because the Immune System never rests and needs the most energy to constantly fight infection. As you can see many of these products we buy are oils. We need Oils and Fats! We were misled with the "low fat" diet. Natural, Healthy Fats are GOOD; you need Fat. People are weak and in pain from chronic infection. Infections are correlated to fat deficiencies. Infections occur because the body doesn't have the correct MINERALS. Jason's #1 health tip is Minerals! Green drinks, green juices, Premier Research Labs Greens Mix is loaded with minerals. You can eat your Iodine in seaweed/sea vegetables. A mineral deficiency means we can't produce Hydrochloric Acid (HCL). If we don't have the proper HCL, we can't properly digest our food AND we don't kill the bacteria, parasites, etc. Low HCL may lead to infection, toxins, tiredness, and low energy. Low fats or fat deficiencies also may lead to low energy. When the body needs energy, it wants sugar because sugar is immediate energy. Give your kids a healthy start with plenty of Mineral, Oils, and Fats. Reduce the sugar intake and Increase the Fats. Sea Salt is good. Table salt is bad. Sea Salt is loaded with minerals. If you're craving salt your body wants more minerals.
In episode 472, Mike and James invite Samantha Moe in to talk about a recent Tools for Practice that looks at the evidence for glucosamine and chondroitin in osteoarthritis. Sam does a great job of showing why you have to look at publicly funded trials and responder analyses to really get the whole picture of the evidence around these products. Show notes

Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I’m looking forward to sharing with you some of our community’s questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Let’s get started! Rebecca: Hi Dr. Cabral, I am in the middle of doing the 21 day detox. After the first week of the detox, my menstrual period came and it was a week earlier than I was expecting it! My periods are usually pretty predictable - every 28-30 days. Can you explain why this happened during the detox? Thanks! Lindsey: What is your opinion on ingesting food grade Diatomaceous Earth for health benefits, such as improved hair skin and nails due to the high silica content, removal of parasites etc. thankyou! Priscilla: Hi Dr. Cabral, When my son was 3 1/2 (about two years ago), his eye started to turn in. At first it only happened every few days, then it was constant. We saw many different doctors with different opinions and finally found a functional medicine doctor/chiropractor. He put us on a plant based, gluten free and dairy free diet. We have seen some improvement, but very slow. Wondering if this is something you have ever heard of and what advise you would have? Thanks so much! Sandy: Confused about apple cider vinegar. Some say it is very beneficial to take before meals with water others warn it is not good to take on a regular basis. What is your thought on this issue. Thanks for your sincere dedication to help as many as possible to better health. Courtney: Hi Dr. Cabral and staff! My name is Courtnie and I have recently started listening to your podcast! I love the housecalls and have been considering sending in my questions there but you always remind us how much longer it will take to hear a response (thank you for that). Well, I’ve had a big problem with weight gain the past couple of years, 10-15 pounds, but I am a 5’1 girl and 10 pounds looks like a lot more on my height. I have really struggled with trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong. I am on a birth control pill (which also helps with my acne that I have struggled with in the past but has recently started to clear up a lot), I had switched to an IUD, which I have recently taken out due to difficulties, and I am back on the pill. I lost weight with the IUD very quickly after insertion and then put it all back on almost immediately after switching back to the pill. I have recently switched to the lowest dose of estrogen pill that they offer in hopes that the estrogen is my issue. I have considered stopping the pill all together but I am afraid it will make my acne flare up. In addition, I eat fairly healthy and I workout 3-5 days a week. If you have any suggestions to offer, I would really appreciate it. Thank you for all that you do! Mark: I first discovered Dr. Cabral via a podcast search and am a subscriber to the Cabral Concept. I am writing to share information about myself and determine which of Dr. Cabral’s protocols may be best for me. About me: 53 years old 6’ 3” tall 235 lbs. which I believe is about 25-30 pounds overweight BMI: 29.4 I’m currently taking Effexor, irbesartin, pravastatin, omeprozale, Glucosamine and Chondroitin, and allergy meds. I use a CPAP machine to manage sleep apnea. I have osteoarthritis in both knees (right knee worse). On a scale of 1-10 (1=poor) my eating habits are probably a 6 on most days—not enough vegetables. Ice cream is my kryptonite. I have found that I can adhere to a 16:8 fast pretty easily and have been doing this for about four months. I lost 11 pounds pretty quickly, but have gained about 5lbs back I do not drink alcohol, but wonder if sugar is the replacement addiction that occurred when I quit drinking alcohol 15 years ago. I do not smoke. I was drinking too much diet cola, but recently quit it altogether. I was exercising but just had rotator cuff surgery so I am limited. I’d like to get a handle on my nutrition and am not sure where to start. What might you suggest in terms of a process for “starting over”? Should I Assess, Plan, Implement? If so, which assessment? Thank you for sharing your expertise. I look forward to hearing from you. Mark Laura: Hi Dr. Cabral, Thank you for all the information you share on your podcast. I always go to it when I need some inspiration, when I'm having a bad day and not feeling well. I am 35 years old and was diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome about 4 years ago. I suffer from dry eyes, all over aches and pains in my joints and muscles, POTs symptoms, arms and legs fall asleep easily, exhaustion, inability to exercise much, etc. it's difficult to be so young and feel like I'm 90! It's also difficult to feel so differently than just a few years ago when I was running 4 miles a day a couple times a week. I miss the feeling of being refreshed after exercise. The other piece that has been difficult is that I want to have a family and haven't found the right guy for me and I think my illness over the last few years has held me back. I've been following many of your suggestions. I don't currently take any medications because I don't have faith that they will truly help me. I eat a mainly vegan diet at this point with some fish. Lots of green smoothies, omega 3s, daily nutrition supplement, gluten free, cut out foods that i can tell I'm sensitive too, lots of water, infrared sauna, meditation, etc. I get scared when I see that this is a lifelong condition that progresses. I want to believe that I can get better, but haven't seen that in 4 years. If my immune system has caused damage already to my eye glands and other parts of my body, is that really reversible? What suggestions do you have? Thank you again Anonymous: Hello Dr Cabral- Big fan of your podcast and the helpful knowledge and mindset you embody. I am suffering from some SIBO related autoimmunity and have a pesky issue I hope you can address. My anus is extremely itchy and is a constant nuisance even waking me up and causing me to sleep poorly. I have done parasite testing and am negative and assume (pun intended!) that the itching is related to SIBO and stomach/bacterial/food sensitivity issues. I am currently completing your bacterial/candida/SIBO 3 month protocol but am hoping you can help provide some immediate relief to the itchiness and help me get my life back, thank you for your time and support. Thank you for tuning into this weekend’s Cabral HouseCalls and be sure to check back tomorrow for our Mindset & Motivation Monday show to get your week started off right! - - - Show Notes & Resources: http://StephenCabral.com/646 - - - Get Your Question Answered: http://StephenCabral.com/askcabral
Do you ever go to Google, and wonder what is in the GOOGLE DOODLE? That's a tough combination of words to say, like Glucosamine and Chondroitin – or Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. Today in that little google feature, they have a cartoon face, a caricature of SELENA who was killed by the president of her fan club, you know the situation, March 31st, 1995. Can you believe that? Over 20 years ago. How often have you talked about that in your life, since then? Maybe a little after the movie came out? Well, whatdyagonnaMountain Dew? Welcome to our first Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! We're getting ready to answer some of our community's amazing questions on wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging. I'm looking forward to sharing those answers with you so let's get started! Scott: Hi Dr. Cabral - I recently accompanied my fiance on her visit to the Wellness Institute. I must say I'm thoroughly impressed with the whole experience, especially with the amount of time and effort you put into each appointment/consultation. My fiance has me hooked on the podcasts! Thank you very much for the knowledge you share with us. With that said, I have some questions of my own, but first, just a little background. I'm a 30 year old male who played at a very high level of soccer up until graduating from school, and since then, still play quite competitively. I've always been prone to injuries and most recently I've been diagnosed with bulging discs in my lower back (L5) as well as in my C3/C4, C4/C5 and stenosis in my C5/C6 - quite a mess right now. Long story short, I've been in a lot of pain over the last two weeks with the bulging pressing on the cervical nerves radiating down my shoulder and into my hand. My questions are which supplements do you recommend I take to help in the healing process? I've read about MSM, Omega 3, and Glucosamine and Chondroitin. I haven't heard of MSM, but read that it's a "miracle drug". Where does one purchase these or other types of supplements? And lastly, I'm hoping you have a recommendation on any exercises (I envision you as the Wikipedia of health - my apologies, I'm asking too much), whether that be an inversion board or some other type of exercise. I've been advised to go see a spinal specialist and will be making appointments today. Thank you again for the podcast service and such a great practice! Regards, Scott Jen: Hi Dr. Cabral! Thanks for all the great information you've provided in your podcasts. I've learned so much! My question today is related to excessive sweating and body odor when doing so. My teenage stepdaughter is very active in sports. She's muscular and strong, bigger than most girls her age, but 'solid' not flabby. Based on my experience, she sweats more than most grown men and her body odor when sweating is quite pungent. Her clothes smell like a stale dirty gym locker room and must be washed immediately. Her father (my husband) and her sister (my other stepdaughter) do not have this issue at all. It might be something genetic from her biological mom's family, but that's unknown to us. Do you have any suggestions for what might be causing this and how we might help prevent this? Thanks for all the help you provide to your listeners!! Lisa: Hi Dr. Cabral, I have 2 questions for you that I hope you can help me with. I recently read a book, Eating on the Wild Side, and I loved learning about eating the right foods. In this book they say the skins of fruit and veggies are nutritious......However, now Im reading The Plant Paradox and its about lectins and how harmful they are for us and its in the skins of our fruits and veggies. What is your opinion on lectins? My other question is about the OATS testing. I did this testing, however, I also do the NutrEval testing....can you explain the difference? The OATS test showed no yeast, but the NutrEval showed high yeast. This is confusing for me and would like your input. Thank you so much for everything you do and God bless your family! Lisa Mariellen: Thanks for everything you do for your listeners. I previously wrote in and ordered the hormone test and had my consult with your health coach and just ordered the DIM Evail and adrenal response complete care. I am on month 2 of the candida protocol and haven't stuck to the diet as well as I should, but have noticed reduced bloating and other benefits. I also take your Daily Activated Multivitamin. I feel like everything and anything gives me headaches.. I have been using the netti pot and when I have my bad headaches it does make me feel a little better, but notice after I use it when I bend over.. water pours of my nose and not sure if it's normal when I use it I can sometimes feel it in my throat. My headaches are always the back of my head, my ears, my sinuses and my eyes always hurt and burn when I get them. They are usually pulsating. I also had trouble swallowing and getting food down. I have been choking here and there. I also have heart burn and do not talk anything for that. Sometimes when I swallow my pills for the candida protocol and my vitamin, the side of my stomach will start throbbing with pain. Sometimes it even feels like it's hard to breathe and I always feel the need to clear my throat. My thyroid is ok I have had that checked out. Any thoughts would help and any natural remedies would be great seeing as I do not want to take anything for acid reflex etc. Ewa: Hello, thanks dr Cabral for all that you do, so grateful and appreciate you daily! I would like to know what you suggest I do regarding me very intense yellow urine. This has been the case for about 6 weeks. I live mostly a healthy lifestyle, with food exercise and weight under control. I drink plenty of water , Dr Cabral daily support shake f breakfast, and your probiotic. I take 120 mg extra magnesium glycinate daily , can that cause the discoloring, even tho I dont notice any difference the days I forget the magnesium... I cant recall any particular diet change when this all began ... appreciate your opinion on this, thanks a bunch! Ewa (like Eva, but you can spell it out any way you like ;) Im going to the bathroom A LOT, at least every hour and have been doing so even before this color change happened. Thought that should be included in the bigger picture in case that helps as a clue... Thanks a bunch! Ewa
Ep. 204, Stacy's Physical and Mental RecoveryIn this episode, Stacy opens up about her struggles since her back injury last year from lifting a bag of concrete in a garden and how she is doing now. Real talk about depression, medical intervention and managing a huge life change. Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 204: Stacy's Physical and Mental RecoveryIntro (0:00) (Now newer and shorter!) News and Views (0:40)Stacy and Sarah discuss how their Seinfeld hello is not their natural way to talk to each other. Stacy is nervous about this show, but Sarah is confident it will be amazing Stacy's injuryLast summer she hurt her back and has had a lot of false starts and dead ends in her healing. In the end, she was diagnosed 11 months after the actual injury. Surprisingly, it wasn't Strongman that injured her. In fact, it was wrestling against United States Strongest Woman Viv in a different sport (MAS Wrestling) and lifting a bag of concrete in a garden that did it. Backs like to be moved up and down, not side to side and twisting. And the MAS wrestling is a LOT of twisting. Stacy was recovering from that original injury and lifting again, but her pride in a community garden event got the better of her and she decided to try to lift a waterlogged bag of concrete to prove a boy wrong. That was the biggest injury. Her diagnosis in herniated discs in her 4th and 5th lumbar discs. The fifth lumbar disc is impinging a nerve on the right side. This is a very common "gardening" injury. Because of her "redhead" mutation, Stacy has a high body pain tolerance and a resistance to many pain killers (This is true!). So part of what made her treatment delayed was downplaying how much she was in pain. Her injury ended up flaring severely after she returned from Europe after a 12 hour flight, travel stress and unusual diet. This led to a freak out in the doctor's office, which led to her actually getting the MRI and the diagnosis. What happens to your life when you have a bad injury that changes your life?Stacy had really built her life around strength training. She gave talks, made friends, got a lot of benefits from it. She went from entering a competition she had a great shot at winning to not lifting for a year. Her quality of life was severely affected. At first she tried to cope by focusing on getting to relax, but after prolonged time away from the gym, it became quite depressing to see her friends getting better and her being unable to participate. Everyone who knew Stacy understood how much Strongman had become a part of her identity. And then the fact she couldn't do it anymore was crushing. Luckily, her injury is treatable. It can be treated with physical therapy and other medical intervention or, as a last resort, surgery. But there are some complementary interventions as well.Back injuries are difficult to heal because they don't take up nutrients the same way other body parts do. There is no blood flow. She'll be doing physical therapy to correct muscle imbalance and relieve pressure on disc. Sarah looked into nutrient deficiencies related to back issues and what supplements could possibly assist. Because disc get all nutrients from diffusion, you have to be very nutrient sufficient. Discs are made with very hard collagen on the outside and gooey center. Sarah recommends the Type 2 collagen from Vital Proteins because Type 2 is what makes up the disc. She also recommends Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements. Also, Vitamin D deficiency is related to disc injury as well. Less well supported is Vitamin C and Zinc and Fish oil for pain management. Originally, she tried to find things to increase blood flow, but realized that wasn't possible. One of the side effects of this huge injury and life change was serious depression. Not only the loss of her sport, but she also was upset with herself, blaming herself for being lazy and making it up to be worse than it was. She was also very irritable and angry because of her chronic pain. He desire to binge eat returned as well. She started seeing a psychiatrist to deal with her issues. She went on an SSRI to help with her mood and binge eating. The diagnosis led to a lot of self loathing and feelings of failure. She cried for many days and didn't get it filled right away. She ended up deciding to take medication because she wanted her quality of life back, she deserved it and the people in her life deserved it, too. Returning from the doctor and confronting those feelings led her to do searches on paleo and depression. She found a worrying article (and frankly irresponsible article) by Chris Kresser about the "dark side" of antidepressants. She was doing all the things that should help restore her and they weren't working! If you've done everything and still not feeling well, then you deserve a great quality of life and shouldn't feel guilty about taking a pill! Going on the medication made her get her quality of life back! She now feels great! If you're going through something, don't feel like a failure if you have to go on medication. YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE! YOU JUST NEED A LITTLE HELP! The Paleo View always talks about how you should combine both the best of nutritional and lifestyle changes with the best of modern medicine. This definitely includes mental health as well. In paleo, there's often a bias against medicine and doctors because people come to it out of frustration. But medicine absolutely has its place, if you use it in balance. Sarah feels that now "old" Stacy's back lately. We hope that if you listen to this show, you use it as a catalyst to try to help yourself and the people in your life that seem to be a little not themselves. Stacy finally feels like she's in a good place and she can recognize that not lifting in a year isn't the worst thing that could have happened. Thank you for listening! Make sure you supplement your diet with MSM, Chondroitin, Glucosamine and Hyaluronic Acid so that you can improve your joint health - repair. Joint Restore is a high quality product containing the proper amounts of these necessary ingredients and more. Triton Nutrition's Joint Restore helps joint health and improves joint recovery from hard workouts. It is important to not only take supplements for optimal joint health but to make sure that workouts are performed in proper form and to make sure that stretch and flexibility techniques are employed as well. When you add Joint Restore, you can give the body important cofactors and building blocks to maintain and even restore the cartilage and soft tissue of the bones. When we feel that wear and tear of our joints breaking down, we can use a joint supplement like Joint Restore to quell that, slow it down and even reverse degenerative joint disease. The two primary building blocks of cartilage are Glucosamine and Chondroitin. It is very important that these are used in a very small particle micronized form. This is only found in high quality products such as Joint Restore. But those two products are not enough. It is important to reduce joint inflammation. The synergistic collection of ingredients include MSM (Methylsufonylmethane), which also helps the body detoxify, a proprietary green lipped muscle extract (GLME), which contains very important fatty acids and oils for joint lubrication, a small amount of HLA (Hyaluronic Acid) and some minerals needed for new cartilage. One of the minerals is the mineral Maganese, which is needed by the cells that lay down new cartilage and soft tissue. It is recommended to take 4 capsules a day and it is possible to take up to 4 capsules twice a day. It is a good idea to take a dose right before a workout so you can actually pump the nutrients into the joints when your circulation increases. Joint Restore can give athletes a performance edge and it can help repair the damage from their workouts. For the average aging individual who wants to maintain joint health and improve their exercise and every day activities, Joint Restore will help slow down or repair degenerative joint disease. by Robert Seik, PharmD

Host: Paul Raeburn Guest: Tod Cooperman, MD Todd Cooperman, founder and president of Consumerlabs.com talks about some recent findings including traces of lead in multi-vitamins and a lack of regulatory control in in glucosamine-chondroitin compounds.

The rate of heart failure in older Americans is on the rise but deaths due to heart failure are declining, especially in men. We discuss this phenomena, and how the supplement coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may be beneficial for those who suffer from heart failure. We discuss the power of prayer, and findings from a study directed by Harvard University psychologist Jeffrey A. Dusek. Lower the risk of heart attack and stroke. Depending upon a couple of facotrs, you may or may not want to take both aspirin and Plavix, an antiplatelet medication. Should you take glucosamine and chondroitin if you have arthritic knees? We'll discuss the results of a new study. Dr. Cooper takes calls.
