My fingers are in tons of pies! Hugh talked about songwriting from dusty notes, Monty Python animations, shooting music videos, piezo mics for guitars, creating sounds from voice memos, pushing through writer's block, and podcast editing for money. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Hugh Macdonald aka Fairhazel a British/South African singer songwriter, artist, and producer born in Brighton but raised in London, Cape Town and Paris. Hugh left Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2018 returning to London to work with Communion Music under the name Fairhazel, releasing his first single 7x7 in February 2018 to critical acclaim. Roisin O'Connor of The Independent described it as having "tender, whispering vocals that recall the likes of Villagers, Ben Howard and Sufjan Stevens”. Inspired by artists France Gall, Harry Nilsson and Andy Shauf among others, Fairhazel has established himself as a musical storyteller blurring the lines between fiction and true stories. At his Los Angeles studio, he works on creating all aspects of his music himself from songwriting to arrangement, production, and engineering. He also frequently produces and mixes music, primarily rock, folk, jazz, pop and soul. Although Fairhazel is a solo venture, a band often accompanies him at shows and he has opened for Agnes Obel, Banfi and Astræa. Recently he played Whispering Bob Harris's Under the Apple Tree, and featured thrice on the lineup of the Counting Crows Underwater Sunshine Festival. As well as the Fairhazel project, Hugh runs a monthly live music event with his wife, Danielle, soon to be growing into a day long monthly festival. Hugh and Danielle also direct, shoot and edit music videos for independent artists. I met Hugh back in 2019 when he came through Nashville at 21 years old and we did a live stream for our Youtube channel where Hugh wrote a song on the spot using lyrics from you Rockstars in the comments and everything was recorded on the Roswell Pro Audio Delphos and Colares mics. And Hugh has since worked with me a couple of years as the head videographer for our NAMM videos in Anaheim CA. If there's any grammatical errors, I will see it. And I make mistakes. I'm not gonna say that I don't. And I can see how, if you have a personal blog, you probably don't have an editor going through everything right? Like we all know how it is to sit and stare at the same content, but it's great to get a second opinion. So I'll see some errors sometimes and that's kind of like a red flag for me. If there's like multiple that's when it's like, okay, egregious, can't hire.""It was very hard to find somebody with B2B SaaS experience, which in my career has been very helpful for me. I think it's one of the harder subjects in terms of content. I would say, you know, SaaS, biotech, cybersecurity, those are some pretty in-depth technical subjects." "Writing, it's a lot of heart and soul and you gotta know the people that you're writing with. You're giving feedback, you're taking feedback. It can be pretty critical. Sometimes I know it can be a little exhausting to be a writer in that capacity, but knowing the person and knowing their, you know, well intentions and their style and everything behind that I think really helps."The B2B Content Show is produced by Connversa, a podcast production agency helping B2B brands connecting with prospects, generates TONS of content, and grow revenue. Side Hustler's Series Part 3 of 4: 5 Killer Tips for Managing Your Side Hustle to Maximize Results Back in May, I had the chance to jump on an episode of The Happy Ever Crafter TV with the calligraphy queen, Becca Courtice. I came prepared with some notes to help her niche calligraphy and lettering audience to get the most out of their side hustles. What kind of a jerk would I be if I didn't go more in-depth and share it with you? Regardless if you do calligraphy, lettering, knitting, underwater basket weaving, etc., there is something in this episode that can help you take your side hustle to the next level. Today, I'm giving you 5 Killer Tips for Managing Your Side Hustle to Maximize Results. Prepare to take some notes! Hopefully, there's a missing piece here that gets you one step closer to putting your peculiar yet promising puzzle together. 1. Have a Plan & Show Up with Intention How comfortably can you answer the following questions with conviction? What do you want to accomplish in life and why? Who do you want to become and why? Who do you want to serve/make an impact on and why? Figuring out the answers requires a lot of time, soul searching, and uncomfortable dialogue in your head. Once you're able to tap into that vision, reverse engineer that dream so you can pinpoint the steps you need to take. From here, you're able to layout short-term and long-term S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound) goals that align with the vision. A goal without a plan is just a wish, so knowing what you want and developing a gameplan are crucial. When you know what you want and have outlined your steps, there's less room for guessing on what you should be working on each day. Having a plan makes it much easier to attack the top task that moves you closer to your goal each day. Note: If you lack a plan or system for making time to work on your side hustle, you're going to love next week's part 3 episode. I'm giving you 6 Ways to Carve Out Time to Grind & Execute Outside Your Day Job. 2. Be Consistent My favorite quote about consistency comes from Sean McCabe (Seanwes). "Nobody notices announcements, people notice consistency. It's time for a hard dose of reality and some tough love. There's no way you should be complaining about the promise of your side hustle when you've only: been doing it for a few weeks to a few months invested an hour or two a week posted a few times on social media here and there and told a few friends People won't notice shit until you consistently stay in front of them and make it crystal clear what you're doing. You have to remind people that you exist, and you do this with—you guessed it—a plan. One of the best ways to do this is to lock down a systemic routine of when you'll create and when you'll post. Frequency I recommend sharing AT LEAST once a week, as we tend to be creatures of weekly cycles (e.g. weekly episodes of our favorite TV shows or Monday Night Football). Daily output is going to get your faster results, of course. This isn't realistic for many people and can easily lead to burnout. Weekly is a manageable output that anyone can figure out. Start with something small and add more to your plate as you build it into your routine. Duration If this is something you're good at and it lights you up, I feel a minimum of six months of pursuing it with maximum effort is the least you can do. I'd highly recommend pushing it easily to 1-2 years if it's bringing you any of the 9 benefits I mentioned in last week's episode. It took me in the 1-2 year range to really start finding my footing. Currently, my fifth year is when I'm really finding my stride. It. Takes. Time. It's not always about reaching the most people in the beginning, but the right people slowly over the years. 3. Be Persistent I wanted this one to rhyme with Be Consistent because I like to have a good time and unwind with a rhyme outside design. News Flash: it's not easy pursuing something that's important to you—it's a straight-up rollercoaster ride, as you're being tested at every turn. You're going to experience plenty of shitty moments along your creative grind. There will be plenty of people that will attempt to rain on your parade. You gotta keep pushing to bathe in those sunny days when you've tapped into your creatively-fulfilled zone. I don't' have enough fingers or toes to count how many battles of self-doubt, depressed funks, haters, financial emergencies, etc. I've faced when pursuing my side hustle. I do know that every shit storm I've weathered has made me stronger. Every time you get knocked down, it's your responsibility to get back up and keep swinging. It's called responsibility because you have the ability to respond. Each time you get back up, you're adding a new bruise or scar that you can add to the "hard lessons learned jar" and use it as fuel. As cliche as it sounds...if it was easy, everyone would do it. It's not easy, but gritting it out because it's important to you will always be worth it. Don't find yourself on your death bed wondering, "What would life look like had I gotten back up to fight another day?" 4. Stop Trying to Be Pizza What fun would this be if I didn't include something pizza-related? My life motto has become, "You can't make everyone happy, you're not pizza." It's my filter that I run everything through when I show up each day. It's insanely hard to gain traction when you feel you have to reach every human in every pocket of the planet when you hit publish. The harder you try to reach the masses, the harder it is to land on that one soul who needs what you have to offer. Attempting to please everyone usually means you're riding the fence and playing it safe. You're scared to have a strong opinion, as it could drive someone away. James Victore on episode 117 would call this being "Oatmeal." Don't be Oatmeal. All it takes is one person at a time to attract that like-minded tribe of freaks who vibe to your flavor of weird. Instead of going for width, go for depth. Embrace who you are, share what's true to yourself, and keep the perfect person in mind when you hit publish (even if it's yourself). More importantly, disregard the thoughts and opinions of the haters. What you put into the world wasn't meant for them anyways. 5. Find Your Secret Sauce What's the secret sauce, and how do you make it? The starting base to your secret sauce: find the overlap of your greatest strength and greatest passion. This is called your sweet spot, and it's something I learned from Ken Coleman of The Entreleadership Podcast. You're going to have a hard time finding success with your side hustle if it's: something you're good at but don't enjoy something you love doing, but you suck ass at it doing The quick way to go about this is to make two-circle Venn Diagram. Strengths On the left, list your strengths. These could be things you can naturally thrive in that others find difficult. It could be skills you've acquired for hours you've spent learning a trade or craft. Taking a StrengthsFinder2.0 test can help you peel back another layer and reveal some deeper answers. Passions On the right, list your passions—the things that light you up and leave you feeling fulfilled. These are the things you zone out and lose track of time doing. It could be the thing that keeps you up at night because your mind is bursting with ideas. At the same time, it could be the thing that gets you jazzed to get out of bed each day. Bonus Points: ask friends and family to list out what they feel your greatest strengths and passions are so you can locate patterns. Secret Ingredient #3 It takes some time and a lot of experimentation to find your secret sauce, but once you do, you can add in the third and final ingredient. That third ingredient is your market. I'm talking about your target audience or perfect follower that your sweet spot provides value or a solution to. Now that's a whole other can of worms, but hopefully, it has you thinking of the value you bring to the table with your secret sauce. Note: I highly recommend Seth Godin's book This is Marketing to go deeper on this topic. Get his audiobook for FREE here. Putting it All Together It's easier said than done, but implementing these tips into your side hustle is no doubt going to help you maximize your efforts and see results. Yes, everything starts with a plan. However, practicing self-discipline, having some grit, and understanding the value you provide is crucial for taking your side hustle to the next level. That's all a part of the process, but the energy and effort is worth it once you find your stride. Need Some Extra Help? 11 Hacks For Staying Focused And Motivated Working From Home Thinking about making a shift and working from home? Have amazing dreams of how wonderful it will be to wear your pajamas on conference calls, laze in bed until 9am and slowly get into your day and be able to have coffee breaks whenever you want? Yeah okay, it sounds pretty cool. And it can be. But there are some things you need to know about working from home before you make the leap. I don’t share this to scare you or to try and discourage you from working from home, I truly believe it is a wonderful thing to do. I love the flexibility, I love being autonomous and I love that I get to be my own boss. I derive particular enjoyment on those cold Monday mornings when it’s raining heavily and you just know the traffic tailbacks would be nothing short of atrocious, and that I don’t have to deal with it. I’ve already worked productive hours and many people are still waiting for the car in front to move forward. Though it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Here are a few things you should consider… Firstly, it can be quite solitary… My friend Steve has kindly suggested I maybe do a day or two a week in his rather funky and plush offices here in Sydney, and we get on really well. I think he’s genuinely worried about me. I think he’s worried about my daily lack of human contact. Though, the thought of all that morning traffic... Losing that first hour being in the car, and then again on the way home is a major turn off for me at this stage in my life. Sure, I love a bit of banter just like the rest of us, though I am also easily distracted by conversations within earshot when I’m working, and find it hard to concentrate generally with all the distractions you find within an office environment. So, yes working from home can be a little solitary, though I think I manage that quite well. I’m a bit of an ambivert. Half introvert, half extrovert. The most conversation I have in a day will probably take place either via email, Skype and it’s most likely about work. I really enjoy the luxury of being able to factor in an hour each day to exercise. It’s either the gym, a coastal walk or a surf, depending on how the waves are looking. So, solitary yes. Am I lonely? No, not at all. It Can Be Difficult To ‘Switch Off’ Without the need to go into the office to work, and with the motivation of working for myself, I could easily ‘work’ from 5am when I get up through to 10pm at night when I finally turn my computer off. Because you’re always ‘at work’ it can be tempting to work all the time and switching off can be difficult. It’s definitely not something I’ve mastered or will master anytime soon, but it’s certainly something I’m aware of. I have gotten a lot better at recognising when my productivity or concentration is on the slide, and calling it quits for the day. Setting ‘work hours’ has helped a lot. Planning out when I will be working and when I will be taking down time stops the guilty feelings creeping in when I’m not working. You Need Time Management And Discipline When you do get more coffee date and lunch invitations (and you will) it can be difficult to stick to your work hours, regardless of how much of a workaholic you are. Because in your mind you can still do the work early in the morning and late at night, so why not go out and catch up. This can also be the case when you’re at home and realise that the floors need vacuuming, or that the kitchen cupboards really do need rearranging, or that you could add an extra dish to dinner tonight. Time management and discipline are essential when working from home and different styles work for different people. It may take you a little time to work out your groove and be sure to find what does work for you rather than doing what you think you should be doing. That’s why we work from home – so we can be flexible and work the way we want. Once you work out which are your most productive hours. For me personally, it’s 5am until 1pm, then, I definitely need a change of scenery. Routines Will Be Your Best Asset Routine helps productivity so much, and it means that you don’t have to use valuable mental power thinking of what you need to do next because it’s all set for you. Simple routine tasks can make such a difference. As I said, I get up at 5am every morning, make my coffee and sit down to work…the biggest plus for me has been spending just a couple of minutes the night before planning the next day’s efforts. That way, I’m not starting the day by procrastinating over what needs doing. This allows me to start the day with a few ticks in boxes of what needs to be done. I don’t have a full day routine because so many things change throughout my day, but I do have little ‘mini’ routines that take around an hour or two that I can slot into any part of my day. Again, it’s all about working out what works for you. Get Out Of The House You work there, you live there, you never leave there…well at least that’s how it feels some days. Don’t get too caught up in the whole ‘work from home’ title. Just because you work from home doesn’t mean you actually have to do all of your work while you’re at home. Now I said I don’t want to commute to an office, though a favourite local cafe is very doable. Get out of the house and go to your local cafe, use their free Wi-Fi, drink coffee and see your productivity go up! If cafes aren’t really your thing you might prefer to head down to the beach (if you’re lucky enough to live close by one) or even just to a nice big shady tree that you can sit under. Getting outdoors and into the fresh air can really help with your productivity and healthy mindset, as well as decreasing your stress levels and getting a good dose of Vitamin D while you’re at it. While it seems like there are a lot of hurdles with working from home, every place you work has hurdles and struggles, this just means you need to learn how to deal with a new set. It feels like every few minutes something pops up to make us procrastinate, distract us, and totally suck out our motivation. Even when you love what you do, part of working from home is grappling with distractions and keeping yourself motivated throughout the day. It can be so hard to stay focused and productive! If you’re nodding along right now and thinking back to a particularly unproductive day you had in the last week working from home - I get you. Some days the struggle is so real. While I’m not perfect, I’ve created a few practices along the way that work well to help me get stuff done… without frantically trying to hit all my deadlines in 30 minutes late at night after procrastinating all day. Tip 1: Keep A Super Short Daily "To Do" List Now, let me be clear: I do have a rather large master to-do list that I’m constantly adding too. Though I’ve learnt that focusing on that huge to-do list day to day completely sucks my motivation and is immediately overwhelming. Trial and error has taught me that no matter how much I try to smash things out, or how many hours I work, or how much I prioritise work over everything else in my life, there’s still no way I’ll complete everything on my master list today/this week/or this month. So, instead of focusing on my master to-do list day to day, I keep a super short daily to-do list, and it definitely helps keep my motivation levels high. If I know at the beginning of the day that I’ve only got two or three must do things that I really need to smash out, I am much more likely to get stuck straight in and get them done. A short to-do list, where I focus on my top priorities for the day, is much more motivating. I know I can tick both boxes, and move on. Tip 2: Do your most important task first, even though it’s not always the most fun. It feels so good to hit the ground running! I like to get in there and knock over my most important task first at the beginning of my workday. Everything else feels very achievable after that. That feeling of having achieved something important before 9:00am is rewarding for me. It creates momentum, which keeps me going. The “most important task” is also not usually the one I really want to do, nor is it the one that feels like it would be the most fun. In fact, the truth is my most important task for the day is usually something I feel a whole lot of resistance around doing. Though I’m always very relieved and happy with myself when I cross it off my list. Tip 3: Remove Distractions And by “remove distractions” I mean work offline as often as you can! For me, this is super helpful if I’m coming up with blog post content, or working on or creating a sales page, I’m able to settle down to work, focus and, as a result, create faster and much more easily when I’m offline. This works especially well when there’s no option for me to be online. Tip 4: Focus On One Thing Only I say this because on the days where I try to multi-task, I just end up stressed, overwhelmed, and get to the end of the day with nothing of much substance done. But if I try to focus on one task at a time… at the end of the day I can point to something and say, “Yes, I did that,” and feel as if I’ve really pushed the needle forward. Tip 5. Noise Cancelling Headphones If you can swing it, they truly make a world of difference. I’m very sensitive to noise and can become easily distracted by even a dog barking outside, particularly if I’m writing. Good headphones help me keep my sanity and stay on track. These Bose Quiet Comfort 35 wireless were a fantastic investment. I bought these headphones about a year and half ago and I use them almost daily because I just love the sound quality and the comfort. Tip 6: Minimise Potential Distractions Turn off all notifications. Put your phone on silent and resist the urge to check texts or missed calls. Don’t check any social media. Close out your email window so new messages can distract you. Tip 7: Know When To Call It A Day Don’t make it a habit of working until midnight every night. Unless you are truly on a roll and producing quality work deep into the night, call it quits and start again after you’ve had a chance to catch some shut-eye. Keeping yourself motivated, productive and happy working from home can definitely take work. I hope my tips help you to achieve the success you deserve! I really hope this helped. I’d love to know your favourite way to stay motivated working from home? Have I missed anything here though? Resources mentioned in this episode: Book Of The Week: Profit First by Mike Michalowicz Transform Your Business from a Cash-Eating Monster to a Money-making machine The book offers simple, counterintuitive cash management solution that will help small businesses break out of the doom spiral and achieve instant profitability. Conventional accounting uses the logical (albeit, flawed) formula: sales - expenses = profit. The problem is, humans run businesses, and humans aren't always logical. Serial entrepreneur Mike Michalowicz has developed a behavioural approach to accounting to flip the formula: Sales - Profit = Expenses. Just as the most effective weight loss strategy is to limit portions by using smaller plates, Michalowicz shows that by taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs will transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows. Using Michalowicz's Profit First system, listeners will learn that: Following four simple principles can simplify accounting and make it easier to manage a profitable business by looking at bank account balances. A small, profitable business can be worth much more than a large business surviving on its top line. Businesses that attain early and sustained profitability have a better shot at achieving long-term growth. With dozens of case studies, practical step-by-step advice, and his signature sense of humour, Michalowicz has the game-changing road map for any entrepreneur to make money they always dreamed of. What people are saying: I've read a lot about business and have operated my current business for the last 10 years. Profit First is actionable business advice that I am following and would recommend to any other business owner looking for more out of their business. As always, thank you so much for tuning in. I really hope this helped. Hey, have I missed anything here though? p.s. Please subscribe over on iTunes. It really does help this podcast to grow! Welcome back to another WEEK of RAWtalk which so happens to top the two hour mark once again. Did you know that Facebook mobile automatically corrects your image when you post it? Yup, they do, but you can turn that function off which I highly recommend doing. Go into your mobile settings and turn off the option for auto correcting images that you publish via mobile. You get to see the new I SHOOT RAW t-shirt commercial for the 8-bit “DOOM” shirt. There were a ton of Flying Solo questions this week with many of them asking me to discuss shooting weddings. I don’t think I have shared so much info on how to market for and shoot weddings ever. If you want to shoot weddings and command a higher than average price you may want to check this weeks show out. We didn’t spin the Wheel of FRO once this week, we didn’t spin it twice, we spun it THREE TIMES!!!! Did you get to spin it? Gear of the week showed us the Kessler Crane and the Aputure 7 inch field monitor that comes in at only $219. Thank you for watching or listening to this weeks show, without you guys the show would not be possible.
