September 2nd, 2023, Segment 3 Over 115 years ago an organization began in the UK.  Twenty boys between the ages of 11 to 18 participated in this experimental camp.  Organizer Robert Baden-Powell then published “Scouting for Boys” which has since sold over 100 million copies. Then in 1910, the organization Boy Scouts of America was formed. Fast forward to 2023 and Scouting now has programs for young people aged 6 to 20 & continues to educate & build adventurers, skilled outdoorspeople, & most importantly citizens & leaders into our future. Mark Turner, CEO of the Mecklenburg County Council, has been a professional part of the Boy Scouts of America for over thirty years & was the recipient of NC's highest award, Long Leaf Pine in 2018.  He joins the program & shares the benefits of Scouting. Turner mentions that what Scouting does for our community & families.  Character, value, morals, leadership training and friendships that last a lifetime built through an outdoor program are part of what propels the Scouting organization.  "Families are hungry for these things, right now", Turner tells Carolina Outdoor host, Bill Bartee. When asked about the recent affects on organizations like church's, fraternal & civic organizations, & others due to the Pandemic & shifting interests of people, Turner says the popularity of being outside tends to benefit BSA.  It also celebrates families spending time with youth & being mentors while building a community. Although Scouting has grown, it & other organizations have taken hits- many aren't joining groups as much these days—churches, civic organizations, fraternal organizations are all trying to maintain membership.  One of the ways BSA added to membership was expanding females into dens, packs, & troops.  Reportedly this has been met with wild success locally with many successfully obtaining the prestigious Eagle Scout award. The longtime CEO of the Mecklenburg County Council speaks on the celebration & success of females in Scouting.  He mentions the girl dens within Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA female troops, & the new female Eagle Scouts, that are representing Scouting so well. Turner speaks about one of the most special aspects of the Mecklenburg Scouting programs which is the Belk Scout Camp & the ever popular Camp Grimes.  These places are close to Charlotte & enables young people to have a place to pursue badges, activities, & build upon the successes that are offered within Scouts. Oscar Wong was born to Chinese immigrants in Jamaica. After an engineering career, including a stint in Charlotte, he retired to Asheville and started the city's first brewery since Prohibition. Today, Highland Brewing is North Carolina's largest brewer, and Wong has become known as the state's "godfather of craft beer."He turned over operation of Highland Brewing to his daughter in 2015 and is now mostly retired. Aside from caring for thousands of patients from birth into the golden years, Dr. Jaffe has served the chiropractic profession in various capacities over 9 years as a member of the North Carolina Chiropractic Association (NCCA) board, including 2 years as president. During this time, he was honored by his peers as the 2014 NCCA Member of the Year and NCCA 2021 Doctor of the Year as well as receiving the Legacy of the Long Leaf Pine in 2022, which honors many years of service and effort to the advancement of chiropractic in North Carolina and service to the NCCA. This is a special in-person episode located in Enfield, North Carolina just off the I-95 with Tyrone and Edna Williams of Fourtee Acres. They lease out land for farming, own certified trees, and garden for local markets. They are proud of their legacy and have a great family to lean on at their multiple-use farm. We start our conversation off by talking about landowner assistance and how they are able to operate. They have diversified and become a well-known farmer's market treat from their gardening which Edna spearheads. Happily transplanted from the city limits of Enfield, NC, to the beautiful county side of Enfield, Edna lives with her husband, her better half, Tyrone Williams. They have three young adult, single, handsome sons, Trevelyn, Tremaine, and Tyron. All of whom have artistic aspirations and existential careers in music, computer science and computer game design. Edna is a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church in Enfield, where you will find her on any given day working in one of the family three gardens and on Sunday, singing in the choir. Tyrone Williams spent 30 years with the Employment Security Commission, and what is now the North Carolina Department of Commerce in local, regional and state office positions. He ended his career as the Workforce Relations Manager in the Employment Service (ES) Section of the Division of Workforce Solutions in the Raleigh state office. Additionally, in 2011 he was awarded the Governor's Award for Outstanding State Government Service from Governor Beverly Perdue. In December 2013, he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Governor Pat McCrory for his outstanding state government service and longevity of service to his community and the state on various boards and other civic activities, one of the most prestigious conferred by the governor. Since retirement, he has spent time reading, traveling, and learning the “real aspects “of the land that he loves to enhance sustainability, create successional and generational wealth for his family legacy and the land that has been in his family for over 100 years! He is married, to the former Edna Mills, and they have three grown sons, Trevelyn, Tremaine and Tyron all of whom are a part of Fourtee Acres, LLC a forestry, tenant farming and natural gardening operation. The average age of hundreds of thousands of maintenance people across the globe is over 50 years old. Many have already started to retire, leaving empty maintenance positions behind. Companies are having a challenge in finding qualified workers to fill vacancies. With no one to fix broken pipes, frayed wires and brittle levies, modern nations are finding themselves in what Joel Leonard has coined, “The Maintenance Crisis.” A former vice-president of the Association of Facilities Engineers, he is taking an international lead in identifying, explaining and helping solve the problem. His creative strategies to build awareness have included holding job fairs specific to the maintenance industry, writing articles, addressing major conventions to high school classes, writing songs, developing an on-line TV network and writing books. As a result of his efforts, he has been appointed to the United States Council on Competitiveness, a national think-tank whose purpose is to work with Capitol Hill and the White House to create policy that results in legislation. Internationally, corporate and governmental leaders are seeking his advice. He has been interviewed on National Public Radio and CNBC. Working with Chicago-based Putman Media, Inc., a publisher of nine trade magazines, Joel has been writing a column for Plant Services Magazine for the past five years. The 80,000 readers have followed Joel's work onto the Internet, where, in 2007, Joel founded SkillTV.net, the first on-line television network dedicated to helping build awareness of and solve the “Maintenance Crisis.” Programming includes interviews with congressional leaders, Fortune 500 CEOs, educators and governmental leaders. In 2008, Joel received the Gold Award for his articles in Plant Services Magazine from the American Society of Business Publications Editors. He has presented and been the keynote speaker of national and international conventions since 1998. In 2008, he was the first American to address the EuroMaintenance Conference in Belgium, a meeting attended by governmental and corporate leaders from 51 nations. His songs, “The Maintenance Crisis” and “Find Me a Maintenance Woman,” have been played on National Public Radio and downloaded more than 40,000 times. They are often played at major conventions. For helping set up The Forge, a Greensboro Makerspace that helped set up over 16 new companies, 9 patents applied and over 50 people hired, the City of Greensboro recognized Joel with the Game Changer Award. Also Joel was invited to the Whitehouse to share strategies to grow the makerspaces nation-wide. In 2018 Joel met with over 60 makerspaces and visited over 35 states to grow the Maker Movement. He also connected the City of Flint with Unifi Corporation to recycle 24 million water bottles into clothing. . Joel has trained engineers from manufacturing plants around the world including Goodyear, Goodrich, Michelin and other major manufacturers. Goodyear Fayetteville Plant was able to receive over 3 million in cost saving by implementing suggested predictive maintenance technologies. In 2021to address post covid challenges, Joel launched a mobile makerspace to take education to rural and underserved communities. In 2012, he received the state's highest civilian award when he was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Twice selected as a Regional Superintendent of the Year, he was selected as the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Superintendent of the Year in 2007.More importantly than all of the awards and accolades and vast experience, today's guest is who Superintendents call when they need advice, encouragement, or just a listening ear.

Philip Blumenthal is chairman and director of the Blumenthal Foundation, a family foundation established by I.D. and Madolyn Blumenthal and Herman and Anita Blumenthal, that supports projects of significance in Charlotte and North Carolina. Dale Ralph Dale Earnhardt Sr.(April 29, 1951 – February 18, 2001), known professionally as Dale Earnhardt, was an American professional stock car racing driver and team owner, best known for his involvement in stock car racing for NASCAR. The third child of racing driver Ralph Earnhardt, he began his career in 1975 in the World 600 as part of the Winston Cup Series. Regarded as one of the most significant NASCAR drivers, Earnhardt won a total of 76 Winston Cup races over the course of his career, including the 1998 Daytona 500. He also earned seven NASCAR Winston Cup championships, tying for the most all-time with Richard Petty. His aggressive driving style earned him the nickname "The Intimidator". In February 2001, Earnhardt died instantly of injuries sustained, after he collided with Ken Schrader and crashed his car in the final lap of the Daytona 500 – an unexpected event that was widely lamented in the racing industry. Earnhardt has been inducted into numerous halls of fame, including the NASCAR Hall of Fame inaugural class in 2010. During the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001, Earnhardt was involved in a three-car accident on the final lap of the race, in which he collided with Ken Schrader after making small contact with Sterling Marlin and hit the outside wall head-on. Earnhardt and Schrader's cars both slid off the track's asphalt banking into the infield grass just inside of turn 4. Seconds later, his driver Michael Waltrip won the race, with his teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr. finishing second. Earnhardt's death was officially pronounced at the Halifax Medical Center at 5:16 PM Eastern Standard Time (22:16 UTC). Nearly two hours later, NASCAR president Mike Helton announced Earnhardt's death. Earnhardt was 49 years old at the time of his death. An autopsy conducted on February 19, 2001 concluded that Earnhardt died instantly of blunt force trauma to his head due to the accident. It also reported that Earnhardt sustained a fatal basilar skull fracture. Days later, on February 22, public funeral services were held at the Calvary Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by North Carolina Governor Jim Hunt in 1994. He was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Earnhardt was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers in 1998. Earnhardt was posthumously named "NASCAR's Most Popular Driver" in 2001. This was the only time he received the award. He was posthumously inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 2002, a year after his death. He was inducted in the Oceanside Rotary Club Stock Car Racing Hall of Fame at Daytona Beach in 2004. He was inducted in the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006. Earnhardt was named first on ESPN's list of "NASCAR's 20 Greatest Drivers" in 2007 in front of Richard Petty. He was inducted in the Inaugural Class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame on May 23, 2010. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2006.
