When life feels overwhelming, the natural reaction for most people is to retreat, drift into some form of depression, and assume the pain or challenge they're experiencing is permanent. But what if the hardest season of your life could become the catalyst for your greatest transformation? Today's episode is all about accessing inner strength, gratitude, and possibility when life tries to knock you down. I'm joined by my good friend Matt Drinkhahn, author of The Eternal Optimist: It's Never Too Late and host of The Eternal Optimist Podcast. Matt is an executive coach to high-performing entrepreneurs, a devoted husband and father, and one of the most genuinely positive human beings I've ever met. But what makes his wisdom so powerful isn't that life has been easy for him—it's that he became an eternal optimist when life literally knocked him down so bad, he could barely walk for 9 months. In our conversation, Matt opens up about the most challenging period in his life when a devastating zipline accident left him in a wheelchair, virtually unable to stand up, handle chores, or provide for his family. He shares how he battled excruciating pain, which tested his marriage in addition to fears of losing his career, and the possibility he may never walk again—and the three principles he used to rebuild his life from the ground up. Matt Drinkhahn sits down with longtime friend and business coach Dan Patrick Andrews for a raw and inspiring conversation about personal transformation, grief, and the business of building meaningful relationships. Dan shares how he went from being a self-described “recovering people pleaser” who was “better in small doses,” to becoming a top-tier relationship coach who helps professionals master the art of asking the right question from the right person for the right introduction. Through deeply personal stories—like the painful loss of his brother to AIDS and navigating the emotional aftermath with his father—Dan unpacks how struggle, faith, and sheer willpower shaped his philosophy. Send us a textI'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. As a leader, you're going to have to talk. From boardroom presentations to team meetings, public speaking is an unavoidable reality of leadership—yet it's often the skill we're least prepared for when stepping into leadership roles. The question becomes, "How can leaders prepare to step behind the podium and truly connecting with their audience?"In this episode, Matt Drinkhahn, high-performance coach and host of The Eternal Optimist podcast, will explore the fundamental shift that turns average speakers into exceptional ones. Matt reveals his journey from focusing on himself (his appearance, his memorized script, his performance) to genuinely serving his audience - pivotally reorienting everything about his speaking effectiveness.Drawing from his experience delivering over 175 speeches to audiences of up to 2,000 people, Matt shares practical frameworks for speech construction, including the "spider web" approach that liberates you from memorizing every word while maintaining focus on your central message. You'll hear candid stories about his biggest speaking disasters—from splitting his pants onstage to completely freezing mid-presentation—and how these moments became invaluable learning opportunities rather than career-ending catastrophes. This episode offers actionable strategies for preparation, delivery, and recovery when things inevitably go sideways. Learn how to read a room, pivot when necessary, leverage modern tools like AI for preparation, and collect meaningful feedback to continuously improve. Most importantly, discover how shifting your focus from impressing to serving creates an authentic connection that resonates with any audience.Ready to step up to the microphone with confidence? "When we take the poisons out and we grow food instead of lawns, we grow the Garden of Eden all around us." "The idea is simply going back to nature, going back to God, going back to service and love and joy and stewardship of our land." "Permaculture is not only the most loving and logical strategy on how we end hunger globally, but this is also the only way we are going to defeat tyranny." Jim explains how permaculture can reduce crime, improve mental health, and create food security by integrating food forests into schools, prisons, and community spaces. He also touches on his experiences in Costa Rica and the challenges of government intervention. Join us as Jim Gale discusses his mission to catalyze a shift in awareness, the importance of self-reliance, and the role of faith and courage in standing up to tyranny. Matt Drinkhahn is a business coach, strategist to growth-minded clients, a dear friend, and valued member of the FRD Brotherhood. He just released a fantastic book, The Eternal Optimist, which I'm excited to dig into and the impact that it's had on so many people. One of Matt's greatest gifts is that any time you spend with him always leaves you feeling loved, accepted, optimistic, and re-energized about your future. You can never have too many friends, especially when struggling with doubt, shame, and guilt. We'll talk about how it's never too late to make a change and be a friend to someone who feels that they're not enough. In our conversation, Matt opens up about his evolution as a parent and how he moved away from micromanaging his kids' lives to letting them carve their own paths. He also emphasizes the benefits of having a Brotherhood to lift you up and remind you that being perfectly imperfect is better than constantly striving for perfection. One last thing, we're giving away a few copies of Matt's book. We are visiting Matts Interview on the Better Call Daddy podcast. Make sure you go show your support! One of the recent defining moments in Matt's career came as a result of a freak zipline accident in 2015. As he was speedingdown a zipline, the attachment to the line broke and sent him falling to the ground where he crash-landed directly on his spine. Over the next 9 months his physical health deteriorated to the point where he ultimately wasn't able to walk anymore and was in constant excruciating pain. Using his strategy of “let your adversities guide your growth”, he turned this great challenge into a great teacher and coached and spoke to teams and companies as he was literally lying flat on his back in his home office. Ultimately 2016 was his best year in business up to that date and Matt credits the support of his family and the preparation of his mindset through “eternal optimism” for his success. 235: How to be Eternally Optimistic about Your Finances with Matt Drinkhahn Joining me today is Matt Drinkhahn of the Eternal Optimist Podcast and Pro Coach Advisors. Matt is full of information, enthusiasm, and excitement about understanding our numbers, especially surrounding financial literacy. Matt is going to share about his journey including some of his embarrassment at not knowing his numbers and then harnessing the power behind those numbers to scale and grow businesses. This is a fun enjoyable conversation, and I invite you to listen in and take notes. Topics Mentioned: Financial Ownership Overcoming Shame Financial Literacy Optimism Key Thoughts: I think sometimes we're so used to learning by only getting it right and not a lot of learning comes from failure. The older I get, the more I'm embracing failure as a learning tool. 10:18 Michele The question is what am I going to do today that my future self will thank me for? 13:40 Matt Now you have a lot of women who are in companies that are making multiple millions of dollars, and they don't even have the background, because they've just never been taught that. 19:53 Michele I just want my story to be a testimony for others that it may feel like a dark place and maybe a stressor, you can get over that you can make it through one step at a time. 22:55 Matt My whole theory behind the podcast is profitability is about more than money.
