Send us a textI'd like to begin this episode by acknowledging the land that I am learning and living on is the traditional unceded, un-surrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. As a leader, you're going to have to talk. From boardroom presentations to team meetings, public speaking is an unavoidable reality of leadership—yet it's often the skill we're least prepared for when stepping into leadership roles. The question becomes, "How can leaders prepare to step behind the podium and truly connecting with their audience?"In this episode, Matt Drinkhahn, high-performance coach and host of The Eternal Optimist podcast, will explore the fundamental shift that turns average speakers into exceptional ones. Matt reveals his journey from focusing on himself (his appearance, his memorized script, his performance) to genuinely serving his audience - pivotally reorienting everything about his speaking effectiveness.Drawing from his experience delivering over 175 speeches to audiences of up to 2,000 people, Matt shares practical frameworks for speech construction, including the "spider web" approach that liberates you from memorizing every word while maintaining focus on your central message. You'll hear candid stories about his biggest speaking disasters—from splitting his pants onstage to completely freezing mid-presentation—and how these moments became invaluable learning opportunities rather than career-ending catastrophes. This episode offers actionable strategies for preparation, delivery, and recovery when things inevitably go sideways. Learn how to read a room, pivot when necessary, leverage modern tools like AI for preparation, and collect meaningful feedback to continuously improve. Most importantly, discover how shifting your focus from impressing to serving creates an authentic connection that resonates with any audience.Ready to step up to the microphone with confidence? Matt Drinkhahn is a business coach, strategist to growth-minded clients, a dear friend, and valued member of the FRD Brotherhood. He just released a fantastic book, The Eternal Optimist, which I'm excited to dig into and the impact that it's had on so many people. One of Matt's greatest gifts is that any time you spend with him always leaves you feeling loved, accepted, optimistic, and re-energized about your future. You can never have too many friends, especially when struggling with doubt, shame, and guilt. We'll talk about how it's never too late to make a change and be a friend to someone who feels that they're not enough. In our conversation, Matt opens up about his evolution as a parent and how he moved away from micromanaging his kids' lives to letting them carve their own paths. He also emphasizes the benefits of having a Brotherhood to lift you up and remind you that being perfectly imperfect is better than constantly striving for perfection. One last thing, we're giving away a few copies of Matt's book. We are visiting Matts Interview on the Better Call Daddy podcast. Make sure you go show your support! One of the recent defining moments in Matt's career came as a result of a freak zipline accident in 2015. As he was speedingdown a zipline, the attachment to the line broke and sent him falling to the ground where he crash-landed directly on his spine. Over the next 9 months his physical health deteriorated to the point where he ultimately wasn't able to walk anymore and was in constant excruciating pain. Using his strategy of “let your adversities guide your growth”, he turned this great challenge into a great teacher and coached and spoke to teams and companies as he was literally lying flat on his back in his home office. Ultimately 2016 was his best year in business up to that date and Matt credits the support of his family and the preparation of his mindset through “eternal optimism” for his success. Matt grew up a military brat, whose father was an Air Force pilot and mother was an English teacher, and he moved 17 times in 21 years, including 13 different states and 4 different high schools before heading to college. Matt began selling CutCo knives in college and he was transformed into a selling machine. As he ascended the ranks, Matt started to see his corporate employer's values and culture were not in alignment with his own. He began to question if this disconnect and “grinning and bearing” it for a career would be something he wanted to do. Matt decided that staying wasn't in the cards, and he made the leap in the first year of his marriage with his wife pregnant with their first child, joining a friend's coaching business to coach executives in strategy, leadership, communication and sales. It was a lean 3 years, yet they made it work and now he enjoys living his values and being present for his family everyday. Tune in to learn how he did it! Matt Drinkhahn's inspiring journey is one to be admired! From overcoming bullying to his three-day golf tournament with his father, which gave him a deeper understanding of parenting, his life has been shaped by strong moments of resilience. Throughout the conversation, we continually return to a moment with his father after a tough day in school when Matt faced his first real sense of rejection. It is this moment that Matt attributes to his strength and resilience.“I know I was reawakened, you know, by this legacy of dad and moving forward in the future. Uh, you asked about emotional intelligence Matt, I could say I didn't really have much of it. I was able to read people very, very well. I was good at sales. I was good at business, but being able to feel process emotion was not a strength. I could read the room well. I didn't process things. I just, I just buried them.”Matt is an entrepreneur and corporate veteran in sales, coaching, recruiting, leadership, and sales management. He has coached high-performance individuals and Teams for 8 years with ProAdvisorCoach and has led dozens of offsite retreats and conferences. He is best known for his integrity and highly energetic and enthusiastic personality. After losing his father, Matt also faced a freak zipline accident that could have taken away his ability to work. However, he used this moment and transformed it into teaching, coaching, and speaking to teams and companies while recovering. This was a defining moment in his career, and he credits the support of his family and the preparation of his mindset for his success.Check out his life's work on the social media channels below:Website: www.eternaloptimistpodcast.comInstagram: @EternalOptimistPodcast, @Coach_DrinkLinkedIn: Eternal Optimist Podcast, Matt DrinkhahnYouTube: The Eternal OptimistTwitter: @PodcastOptimist, @MDrinkhahnResources:Follow/Subscribe to "The Life Shift" wherever you listen to podcasts. Success leaves clues. And one thing successful people do is deal with “things” well. I'm talking about the unpredictable… the external factors… the things out of our control. Anyone can be successful if everything goes according to plan. What we've noticed about successful people is that they seem to handle situations very well when the unpredictable happens. How? According to this week's #truthseekers guest Matt Drinkhahn, CONSISTENCY is the key. Coach Matt gave the example of Michael Phelps, “play the video tape…” – listen to the conversation this week to see what he means. “If we know what situations we might be in, we can practice them.” Got a recurring challenge in your life? “identify it,” says Coach Matt. As we reinforce all the time on #truthseekers, the first step is AWARENESS. The coaches go into this conversation much more deeply during this week's episode – enjoy! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nick-davies7/support

A person's success depends on his or her ability to take action."I always want to be constantly learning as to how today's challenges can be tomorrow's opportunities." – Matt DrinkhahnCONNECT WITH MATT DRINKHAHN:LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/mattdrinkhahnInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/coach_drink/?hl=enFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063609038860Twitter: https://twitter.com/MDrinkhahnYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0cCuNIfmKFjQleWQpy_3GQEmail: matt@proadvisorcoach.comCONNECT WITH JENNIE:Website: https://badassdirectsalesmastery.com/Email: jennie@badassdirectsalesmastery.comFacebook personal page: https://facebook.com/jbellingerPLFacebook podcast page: http://facebook.com/BadassDirectSalesMasteryFacebook group for Badass Crew: https://facebook.com/groups/BadassDirectSalesMomsInstagram: https://instagram.com/BadassDirectSalesMasteryPersonal Instagram: https://instagram.com/jenniebellingerLinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/BadassDirectSalesMasteryAudio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions.
