Originally from Garden Grove, CA in Orange County, Vicky has played piano since she was a child and worked as a music writer and producer for a long time, notably with a writing credit on Anderson .Paak's Grammy winning single “Lockdown” and production credits on Paul McCartney'a album McCartney III. But it wasn't until the pandemic hit that she really began writing music for herself. Her first album Sweet Company came out in 2022, and her latest Give a Damn just came out on Mac's Record Label, and folks, it's wonderful! Felix Cavaliere co-founded The Young Rascals in 1965.  As singer/songwriter/keyboardist, they had nine Top 20 hits from 1966-1968.  Throughout the years, Felix has released several solo albums, launched a band called Treasure, and recorded several releases with Steve Cropper.  You'll find him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and tapped for numerous other awards, too.  Multi-award winning program director Ray White caught up with Felix in September 2023 to talk about the early years with The Young Rascals, playing the Hammond B-3, a highlight of touring with the Rascals, his most cherished music award and insights on his new album - Then and Now.  In our showcase segment we continue our "Back from the 60's" theme featuring the lastest from The Beatles, Paul McCartney -whose most recent album is McCartney III, Ringo Starr - who just released his Rewind Forward EP and Dolly Parton, a 2022 inductee in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame whose brand new album is Rockstar.   Featuring the lastest from many of your favorite legendary bands and performers on Classic Artists Today!

At the dawn of the Beatles' dissolution, Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda, started to spend an increasing amount of time in the Scottish countryside. Sequestered at their farm near the Mull of Kintyre, McCartney found refuge in his family, his animals, and in fixing up their homestead. The ease and charm of country living was documented in “When Winter Comes” from 2020's McCartney III. And in 1977 his ode to life on the family farm, “Mull of Kintyre,” became a massive hit for Wings despite the hold disco and soft rock had on the charts and the ascendance of punk and new wave. “McCartney: A Life in Lyrics” is a co-production between iHeart Media, MPL and Pushkin Industries. Paul McCartney hat die Beatles verlassen! Diese Meldung im April 1970 schockierte die Musikwelt. Die Auflösungstendenzen der berühmtesten Band der Welt waren vorher schon unübersehbar, auch George Harrison und John Lennon hatten die Band bereits verlassen wollen. Paul McCartney legte danach - wie seine Freunde - gleich los mit einem Solo-Album. OK WE'RE FINALLY HERE!! Let's get down to it. During the creation of the White Album as tensions built among the ranks of the Beatles, the members often found themselves working on their own tracks in different studios, sometimes bringing in other members as needed, or working by themselves. While John and Ringo tended to a mix session for Revolution 9, which Paul hadn't been a part of, Paul was in another studio overseeing overdubs on his own "Mother Nature's Son." Following work on that tune, and feeling a creative streak, Paul demoed a (still) unheard song, "Etcetera," and then began building a track based on a guitar riff he came up with in Rishikesh. Adding additional guitars, percussion, and wild vocal acrobatics, Paul and the staff of Abbey Road finish the evening by mixing this weird track, and using their hand against the tape machine to manipulate the speed of the song, giving it it's even weirder sonic warble. In about an hour "Wild Honey Pie" was born, a track that had no real precedent in 1968, as far as it it's experimental nature and sound. It's weird, disjointed, grooves, and works within itself in ways that don't always make sense in passing listens. In headphones, it reveals how dual guitars weave together to form this strange, almost atonal melody, while the man who, at the time, had arguably the greatest voice in popular music throws his voice around in ways others wish they could. It's Paul at his experimental best, giving you just enough to do be different and not overstay its' welcome, and it's the beginning of a through-line that appears throughout his career, whether in his early home solo works, the synthy-strangeness of McCartney II, his collabs with producer Youth as The Fireman, all the way up to his tape loops and sounds he created for his Rockdown album, McCartney III. As Julia puts it, "Wild Honey Pie" walked so "Temporary Secretary" could run. But fear not, listener, Julia's just as perplexed at this ranking as you might be. Joining us this week to talk about this track is the fantastic Phoebe Lorde, one of the hosts of Another Kind of Mind, which, in our humble opinion, is one of the best Beatle-pods around. Challenging well-worn tropes and narratives about the band, and examining their history with more nuance and deeper, more candid discussion, AKOM is part of a rejuvenation of the discussion of the legacy of the Beatles, refreshing the story and opening it up to new light after all these years. The Yardbirds formed in London in 1963 and launched the careers of three of the greatest guitarists in Rock and Roll history - Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck.  Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, the band had 5 Top 20 hits in the U.S.  Their albums landed on the charts 6 times leading to the band being named by Rolling Stone magazine as "100 Greatest Artists of All Time."  We sat down with drummer and co-founder Jim McCarty in May of 2010 to talk about the historic band and their last studio album Birdland.  The group still performs today and their latest release, captured in concert, is titled Making Tracks.  In our showcase segment, we continue the Bristish Invasion theme by featuring Paul McCartney, whose latest project is McCartney III, and the progressive rock stalwarts YES, who recently released The Quest.  The British are Coming...The British are Coming, right here on this episode from Classic Artists Today!

The George Harrison Estate has announced the fiftieth anniversary edition of "All Things Must Pass", which includes the contents of the beloved "Beware of ABKCO" unofficial release.    This classic episode from 2020 features Lonnie Pena and myself reviewing that very disc.    Squint, and it might even sound like something from the future (if you ignore the McCartney III and Taylor Swift chat!)  

The Yesterday & Today podcast is excited to welcome special guest Luther Russell to the show this week to analyze, review and ruminate on a trilogy of albums 50 years in the making! It's an episode we had to title McCartney: Anatomy of A Trilogy. In 1970 the world became aware of the breakup of the Beatles when Macca's first solo album, McCartney, hit shelves accompanied by a widely publicized and (arguably) misconstrued press release - one that seemed to indicate the demise of the fab four. Whatever the intentions of said press release, the very high profile of this interview and its corresponding homespun collection of tunes would spark the beginning of Paul's solo career and set into motion a series of one-man-show efforts on behalf of McCartney in the decades to come. In 1980 McCartney II was released, a sequel that proved to be a similar demarcation of the winding down of Paul's band Wings, and yet another exercise in isolated musical experimentation. 40 years later, in the thick of a global pandemic, McCartney III emerged to complete the trilogy and once more found McCartney's introspective craftsmanship at a peak. In this episode we'll examine all three releases and explore the possible connective tissue between each installment.
