Imagine making $70,000…from your bedroom…in one night. That's exactly what Matt “Dappz” McGuckin did with his online trading cards shop. He got his start “breaking” – that is, buying and opening boxes of cards live online, and selling the contents…all on TikTok. Sounds risky? It is! But today, Dappz Sports is the Live Shopping Company on TikTok in the U.S., making over $20 Million in gross sales. So the risks have paid off. Now maybe it seems like too far-fetched to say you'll make $70K in one night, but it's not too far-fetched to say that making calculated risks will elevate your business. It's a proven strategy and Dappz, and today, he's going to tell you how you can do it too. Top Takeaways Don't try to think about how you'll go viral. Instead, be consistent and try different things. Experimenting can be low-stakes risk-taking.  One of the biggest risks that pay off is hiring someone. They will take SO much off your plate. It sounds scary, but it's a must for any business owner.  Research is SO important with it comes to mitigating risk – remember, this is about calculated risks, not being a cowboy, and doing crazy stuff to see if it pays off.  Show Notes Matt "Dappz" McGuckin Matt on Tiktok The Social Dilemma on Netflix Sponsored by: Sensei Sponsored by: Sensei: Save 20% FOR LIFE with code JOECASABONA ★ Support this podcast ★

If there was one thing you think society should talk more about, what would it be?“Do you really wanna take over the family business? Succession is not always going to work out how you think.”__________Cecily McGuckin is a trailblazer. As the first and only female CEO in Australia's steel distribution industry, she is passionate about driving change in her industry and her family owned business, Queensland Sheet and Steel (QSS).Cecily began her career in finance but quickly stumbled upon an area she enjoyed so much more - construction development management. She cut her construction teeth at leading companies like Suncorp and Mirvac, where she gained a wealth of experience in the day-to-day running of big business and the delivery of large scale projects, before then joining the family business her father started 33 years ago. No one was more surprised than Cecily when her father asked her to take over running the family business. A business he had built up from scratch at a time when the steel industry was no place for a woman. “Woman don't work here, and they never will” were words Cecily's father told her growing up…and yet, today Cec has been the CEO of QSS coming up six years. And whilst she's proven her Dad wrong - that many woman work at QSS today - Cec is still the only female CEO in the wholesale sheet distribution business in AustraliaI've known Cec for quite a while and she's a gun. Incredibly resiliant (as you'll hear), she's a problem solver and out of the box thinker. As a woman in a man's world she has needed to prove herself time and time again. Not just to her peers, customers and her staff, but to her father who started the business from nothing and he's struggled letting it go as it really is his third child. Cec is a down to earth, straight-shooter and I know you'll love this conversation as much as I enjoyed having her on the show. For more information about Cecily, check out these places;- Instagram: @cec_mcguckinWebsite: qss.net.auLinkedin: Cecily McGuckinHead to michellejcox.com for more information about the ONE QUESTION podcast, your host or today's guestsConnect with Michelle on Linkedin here:- @MichelleJCoxConnect with Michelle on Instagram here:- @michellejcoxConnect with Michelle on Facebook here - @michellejcoxAND, if you have a burning topic you'd love people to talk more about, or know someone who'd be great to come on the One Question podcast, please get in touch;- hello@michellejcox.com

Join Rebekah Campbell as she chats with Cecily McGuckin, CEO & Managing Director of Queensland Steel & Sheet. Cecily leads with integrity, gut instinct and a no-ego rule as the foundations for a successful culture and talks about building leadership confidence through tough experiences.   Key insights (01:17) What is the story of Cecily's leadership journey and what does she do differently? Cecily brings three key areas to the table. She focuses on her gut instinct, her emotional intelligence and on asking a lot of questions. When she got involved in the business, one of the things she started off with very early was asking questions and getting perspectives from everyone. Cecily travelled the world, saw steel mills, and all of their customers. She also spent time with her staff so she could understand every aspect of the business that she was walking into.   (05:55) What was the reaction from staff when Cecily started rising through the ranks? In a very male dominated industry, when Cecily came on board, the company didn't have any female members of staff. She faced a number of challenges including the fact that there were no women in the business and the fact that she was the owner's daughter. So these were two areas which made it really challenging when she joined the organisation.   (18:44) How does Cecily navigate between letting people go and supporting her team and company culture? Cecily makes sure she looks at all the facts to ensure she is making the right call for the business as a whole. When she looks at letting someone go, it's about making sure the business is best placed to keep on succeeding. She communicates with the rest of the team and gives information as to why the decision was made.   Important Resources and Links If you'd like to learn more about how CommBank is supporting the growth of women in business visit https://www.commbank.com.au/women-in-focus.html   Host of the Leading Women podcast, Rebekah Campbell is a high-profile entrepreneur and public speaker who spoke at TEDx Sydney (2012). He joins the show to talk about how he got into child care and came to own Ronald McGuckin and Associates Law Firm, and what kinds of processes people should have in place for managing employee behavior. He also addresses the new issues that arise dealing with COVID-19, and ways we can best protect our classrooms and staff to ensure everyone stays on the same message and mission.   Key Takeaways: [2:23] At Ron’s law firm, they represent child care agencies in PA and NJ. But he personally also has consulting agreements with child care agencies across the country. [3:06] Ron got involved with the Headstart program and saw a need for better legal representation in the field. [7:53] You would never guess it, but Ron considers himself to be somewhat shy. He is also starting up a new comedy hobby, performing and hosting a comedy night at the Civic Center. [14:49] A few failures along the way does not mean success isn't possible. They are learning lessons that we can grow from. [15:05] One way child care leaders can protect themselves is by letting go of toxic people, and not waiting too long to do it. [19:15] Mean what you say, be intentional, and be sure the staff has a clear understanding of company policies. [31:27] Be sure you have thorough policy and service agreements that outline the different possible scenarios in which schools can get shut down or temporarily closed. [40:30] Great leaders take their time training and onboarding their people. They understand that the process is not one to be rushed, and it will pay off when you have a culture that knows how to work within their business and speak to children. When there are shortcuts, children suffer.   Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company Child Care Success Academy Child Care Success Summit Child Time, Inc. Electric Ireland Ulster MFC quarter-final: Armagh 0-4 Derry 1-5 Derry minors deservedly defeat defensive Armagh in wind-affected contest. MANY of the names remain the same – but the game has changed. Several Downeys, a J McGurk, and a McGuckin helped Derry minors defeat an Armagh outfit including a P McGrane, and a McConville, McKeever, King and Cunningham – although the crucial goal came from a McAleese, PJ of Kilrea, converting in sublime style in the 53rd minute.  Derry looked stronger across the whole pitch and Armagh had 11 men behind the halfway mark for large portions of this dour affair, played in arctic conditions at the Athletic Grounds in Armagh. Armagh boss Ciaran McKeever admitted as much: “From day one when I took this job, I knew teams like Derry, Tyrone, Monaghan, and Donegal were 10 points better than Armagh. Our aim this year was to narrow the gap on those teams. “Derry are a very athletic team and would hurt us if we were naïve and pushed up on them, left gaps in behind. We tried to mirror them as much as possible but they got in behind us in the last 10 minutes and got the decisive goal, which was the difference in the end.” Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to listen to this Podcast. Joy and Jim Carey were 150 miles from their home port in Belingham Washington when they were struck by violent storm. A rougue wave filled their boat with water, knocked out the electronics, and nearly washed Jim overboard. Getting hypothermic with no other forms of communication, they pulled their EPIRB and abandoned their beloved sailing vessel Kelaerin. This tragic story has a happy ending. Listen to hear it. Their blog is at http://cruisinginkelaerin.blogspot.com/ Linus Wilson also gives his review of the Adrift movie in episode 52 of the podcast. In the USA Adrift became available for rental in early September 2018. This is the blurb from its distributor STX entertainment: "Starring Shailene Woodley (Fault in Our Stars, Divergent films) and Sam Claflin (Me Before You, The Hunger Games films), ADRIFT is based on the inspiring true story of two sailors who set out to journey across the ocean from Tahiti to San Diego. Tami Oldham (Woodley) and Richard Sharp (Claflin) couldn’t anticipate they would be sailing directly into one of the most catastrophic hurricanes in recorded history. In the aftermath of the storm, Tami awakens to find Richard badly injured and their boat in ruins. With no hope for rescue, Tami must find the strength and determination to save herself and the only man she has ever loved. ADRIFT is the unforgettable story about the resilience of the human spirit and the transcendent power of love." Linus talks about the rescue of two Golden Globe Sailors rescued in the Indian Ocean. Abhilash Tomy was in 3rd place in the Golden Globe Race for small yachts on September 21, 2018, when his boat THURIYA was rolled and dismasted in 14-meter seas and 70-knot winds about 1,900 miles SW of Perth, Australia in the Southern Indian Ocean. Tomy had a sever back injury and could not move from his bunk. He set off his EPIRB manually, but was unable to cut away the dangerously dangling mast. This set off an international rescue of the French fisheries patrol vessel Osiris underway on September 24, 2018. 4th place competitor Irish skipper Gregor McGuckin was also rescued 30 miles west of Tomy by the Osiris. McGuckin's sailboat was dismasted and was sailing under jury rig. You can see our video about the rescue at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGaL0KdDhXw Hurricane Florence devastated the sailing community in New Bern, North Carolina with its ten-foot storm surge. You will see the destruction to boats in the historic city. You will see how the storm surge broke up the docks in Bridgepoint Marina and hear from a marina tenants Shawn and Shannon Yale of Sailing Banjo whose boat, SV Banjo, rode out the storm successfully on a Mantus Anchor. A transportation seminar presented by the USC METRANS Center for Transportation. Abstract: We present findings from recent reports detailing the amount and type of walking and biking in California. We consolidate these findings to dispel myths and identify critical factors for adults and children who walk and bike. Some notable findings: On average, people in California walked more than in the nation as a whole. But over 1/3, disproportionately less educated, lower income, and of Asian or Hispanic heritage, report not taking any walks at all. On the other hand, newer immigrants and those walking dogs were much more likely to report walking every day. Surprisingly, while walking by adults is spread relatively evenly across different areas of the state, walking to school varies considerably depending on location. One important finding is that walking to school acts as an anchor for greater amounts of walking overall. Speaker Bio: Ms. McGuckin is a senior advisor and consultant to Federal, State, and local public agencies and private clients on matters related to travel behavior and evidence-based transportation policy. She specializes in assembling data to help understand travel behavior across all modes and making actionable information out of complex data sources. McGuckin has spent her 30-year career as a consultant. For nearly 15 years, she specialized in developing inputs to help forecast travel demand for major investment studies in the US and abroad as with the boutique consulting firm of Barton-Aschman Associates (1984-1997). In the 15 years since, she has run her own consultancy focused on travel behavior analysis and application for policy and planning. She is well known for her work with the US DOT and the National Household Travel Survey.
