Ryan McManus — founder and CEO of SHARE MobilityRyan is passionate about solving workforce and rural mobility challenges, creating and affording equitable access to transportation, and ultimately changing the way people actually commute. To this end, SHARE Mobility, which raised over $12 million in funding from investors like JumpStart Ventures here in Cleveland, JobsOhio, Iron Gate Capital, Seamless Capital, and Venn Ventures among others, is a mobility-as-a-service platform empowering companies and municipalities to seamlessly implement a new transportation program or optimize existing ones as part of an employee benefits program.Practically, this has resulted in exciting mobility programs and pilots like one with the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's (GCRTA) to expand equitable access to employment opportunities in Solon for all the Greater Cleveland region, providing first and last-mile ridings from public transit centers to employment sites. In a world where many frontline workers don't have access to a car and we're increasingly thinking about mobility holistically, Ryan has a fascinating and unique perspective on autonomous vehicles, connected car innovations, multimodal transportation, the transition to mobility subscriptions from car ownership, what mobility-as-a-service even is, and a whole lot more. I enjoyed getting to learn from Ryan about where this space is headed, SHARE Mobility's role in shaping it, and his reflections on entrepreneurship.-----LINKS:https://www.sharemobility.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryanpmcmanus/https://twitter.com/rynmcmnshttps://twitter.com/ridewithsharehttps://www.instagram.com/ridewithshare-----SPONSORS: John Carroll University Boler College of Business || Impact Architects & NinetyJohn Carroll University Boler College of Business: https://business.jcu.edu/ As we've heard time and time again from entrepreneurs on Lay of The Land — many of whom are proud alumni of John Carroll University —  success in this ever-changing world of business requires a dynamic and innovative mindset, deep understanding of emerging technology and systems, strong ethics, leadership prowess, acute business acumen… all qualities nurtured through the Boler College of Business! With 4 different MBA programs of study — spanning Professional, Online, Hybrid, and 1-Year-Flexible — The Boler College of Business provides flexible timelines and various class structures for each MBA Track — including online, in-person, hybrid and asynchronous — to offer the most effective options for you, in addition to the ability to participate in an elective International Study Tour, providing unparalleled opportunities to expand your global business knowledge by networking with local companies overseas and experiencing a new culture. The career impact of a Boler MBA is formative and will help prepare you for this future of business and get more out of your career. Impulse To Innovation

With the recent acceleration of technologies such as IoT, cloud computing, and big data – people and services have become more connected than ever. In response to this increasing availability of data and digital services the transport sector is undergoing a sizable transformation as a result of the growing need for more sustainable and accessible travel solutions. This has stimulated a considerable amount of research aimed at improving the connectivity of transport infrastructure and services, developing new business models that package different modes and services together into one mobile application or online platform to make the planning and payment of trips easier for people and businesses. Such innovation has been termed ‘Mobility as a Service' (MaaS), and was outlined in the UK Government's report Future of mobility: urban strategy, 2019 which aimed to help urban areas harness the benefits and opportunities of new transport innovation. MaaS platforms integrate and analyse data from transport systems, such as rail, buses, taxis and even cycle hire, to offer the user a choice in journey planning.   The concept of MaaS is to make journeys more convenient through streamlining planning and payment and allowing people to tailor journeys to their specific needs.   In its drive to meet decarbonisation and net zero ambitions the UK Government produced a Code of Practice for Mobility as a Service (MaaS) in 2023. This comprehensive framework focuses on convenience, accessibility and innovation to ensure that modern mobility apps meet the needs of the public. Indeed, the main objective is to make transport options accessible to all, paving the way for an interconnected, user-centric transport ecosystem. But how effective would such a system be in the UK? what impact would MaaS have globally particularly in remote locations and low income economies? And is the transport industry really ready to integrate this level of digital interconnectivity into its services?   To answer these an other questions about MaaS I spoke with Dr Kate Pangbourne, associate Professor of transport governance at the Institute for Transport Studies at Leeds University and Sharon Kindleysides, Transport engineer and board member of the European Logistics Association to get their views on what implications it might have for the UK transport sector, the impact it could have on society in terms of accessibility and cost, and what challenges it might face in the UK and beyond.           Dr Jane Pangbourne                                  Sharon Kindleysides   Useful Links Forsight report on MaaS European MaaS Alliance   We would love to hear your thoughts and comments on this episode. If you would like to get in touch, email us at podcast@imeche.org You can find more information about the work of the IMechE at www.imeche.org

From James Bond's super spy Aston Martin, to Elon Musk's tricked-out Teslas; the cars we own, drive, and aspire to impress with, have had an outsized hold on America's consciousness and mythology for over 100 years. But, the problem is; we don't just drive them; they drive us to make monthly car payments, and lament the ever-increasing cost of gas, insurance, license tags, parking, and maintenance. But what are you going to do? Some lucky Americans live in cities where taking mass transit is easy, like in New York, and Washington, DC. But they're in the minority. Most of us need our own vehicle to get us where we need to go. And, even if you do have relatively easy access to decent mass transit; that doesn't necessarily mean it is all that convenient, particularly if you need to get somewhere that is not immediately adjacent to a subway line or bus route. At the same time; the environmental damage and health risks associated with burning fossil fuels is driving technological change in the form of more electric vehicles, along with smart technologies that have enabled both autonomous and connected vehicles. With that in mind; I had a conversation with author, educator, and designer, Carla Diana, who is currently working on a new book about a possible shift away from owning personal vehicles, toward a shared, "mobility-as-a-service" model.  But the question is; Will Americans ever willingly give up their own personal cars, in favor of making such a thing possible? The last time we spoke, was just after the publication of her book, "My Robot Gets Me: How Social Design Can Make New Products More Human".  Now, Diana says, she's fascinated by the possibility of a future where a variety of mass transit options accessed through advanced ride sharing software, could make the personal car passé, help reduce global warming, and give us all back a measure of personal freedom and community that we're missing now as we tool around town in our own private cars.

GUEST: Andy Palmer, Switch Mobility About the showHaving spent 42 years in the business of developing, making, and selling vehicles, Andy Palmer is a titan of the auto industry. During his 42 year career, he rose to almost the very top of the Nissan C-suite, where he introduced a raft of vehicles, including the Nissan Leaf EV and the e-NV200 electric taxi. He subsequently spent six years as the CEO of Aston Martin, where he campaigned for the Rapide E high-performance EV, and is now the CEO of electric bus maker Switch Mobility.Andy Palmer is a long-standing advocate of clean zero emission mobility. But more than that, he's a proponent of net carbon zero. And that's the focus of this episode: it's not enough to produce zero emission vehicles—to make an impact, he says, you have to be a net zero hero, and that means your vehicles have to be net carbon zero. To achieve what used to be called “well-to-wheel” requires a new way of thinking about everything from design, development, and manufacturing, to marketing, sales, and business model.

In dieser Problematik soll The Autonomous Lösungen liefern.

Often because of our habits and the most readily available form of transport, we become locked into or dedicated to one particular type of travel mode. We tend to either drive a car or catch public transport but rarely both and not often incorporating multiple modes such as buses, trains, bikes and taxis in the one trip. So if I have a new trip to plan and I own a car and I use the car all the time, the only decision I make is what route to take and where to park. And similarly if I'm used to travelling on railways I tend to think of trains as the way to go. I might not even look for a closer bus route because that is not what I know about or are comfortable to use. Now we're moving into an era where we have more readily available information so we can understand the various options that are available which might include one or many modes of transport. And if we use a bus, a taxi and a rent-a-bike it would be good to be able to pay for the whole trip in one transaction using the one card. The approach of using multiple modes of transport with one payment, for one trip is now called MaaS – Mobility as a Service. We define the service we want, where we what to go to or from, at what time of day and we learn the options in terms of availability, ease and cost. SO who benefits, the provider, the individual and/or the community. Dr. Ryan Falconer has a PhD in Sustainability and Technology policy. He is currently the Cities Leader in WA for the Arup consulting group. He has also had recent experience in Canada. He has just presented a paper at the Australian Institute of Traffic Planning and Management National Conference in Perth titled The Mobility as a Service Value proposition: Evidence from North America. David Brown caught up with him immediately after his presentation and began by asking if Mobility as a service was really just another name for Uber.
