Find out about Cook Forest and Clear Creek State Park, Sparky Lyle and Chuck Daly, and the unique history of a site called Scripture Rocks. Our "Hometowns" series gives you a radio-tour of the communities which make up the Family Life listening area in Pennsylvania and New York. Your tour guide is Family Life news anchor Mark Webster.
Mike and Keith look back on the career of coaching legend Chuck Daly
As the NBA Finals tip off (tonight), our guest this week is a man who helped lead the Detroit Pistons to back-to-back world championships, part of his 45 years of coaching college or pro basketball, which also included being a scout and assistant coach for the Olympics "Dream Team." (3:36) Coach Brendan Suhr tells some fascinating stories about being an assistant coach under Chuck Daly for the "Bad Boy" Pistons, including Isaiah Thomas and Joe Dumars, now in one of the top positions in the NBA. One of his fellow coaches was the dad of current Denver Nugget's head coach. One the other side was a guy named Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls! Suhr talks about helping to come up with the "Jordan Rules" at 2am in a hotel lobby, during the playoffs. He says coaching is taking players where they can't take themselves. (13:38) What does it take for pro athletes to have that really strong winning mentality? Part of it is buying in, and it takes everyone to do that part as a team - not just in sports but other career fields. Suhr gives us the 3 keys to coaching. For NBA players, (19:36) staying in shape is essential, but Coach Suhr says they used to not play during the offseason, taking a break from basketball and getting needed recovery...but nowadays, overtraining leads to more injuries. Running for an hour every afternoon of a game day was Suhr's ritual. Along with being on the bench for the Pistons in the early 1990's, he also has helped coach the NJ Nets, Toronto Raptors, and Orlando Magic. (27:19) The most dominant team doesn't always win the NBA Finals, he says, and the Miami Heat have the confidence, but he believes the Denver Nuggets will win thanks top having the league's best player plus home court advantage. Suhr has known both head coaches since they were teenagers, including Erik Spoelstra who started in the video room. (32:41) He also founded and has led "Coaching U" for the last 15 years, teaching how to be a great coach, business leadership, and more. (38:55) Find out why coaching people to be better involves their heritage, hopes and heartaches. We close with some of his quick stories about Coach Billy Donovan, Tony Robbins, Coach Nick Saban. Thanks for listening to the #RunTheRace podcast, which I hope you'll subscribe to! Share it with your friends. Also, write a quick review about it, on Apple podcasts. 5-9-2023 Passed Ball Show. John spends this program talking about the consequences of using slurs to put down an entire group of people. Within the last week, Glen Kuiper used the “N” slur during his description of his visit to the museum in Kansas City. John adds the responsibility as a professional speaker to reiterate how inexcusable it was for Kuiper to make that “mistake,” as he put it. Bob Huggins went on a homophobic rant during and interview as the West Virginia Head College Basketball coach was talking about a rivalry between his then school Cincinnati against Xavier. While there should be consequences to these actions, John believes that after remorse there should be forgiveness and these men should NOT be cancelled, which John is completely against. John talks about the difficulty Nikola Jokic is up against as he continues to try to lead the Denver Nuggets to victory by himself. During today's #savingsportshistory segment, John talks about a Four (4) times Wimbledon Champion and a Tour de France winner both Killed in Action in 1915, Harry Vardon, Betty Jameson, why Tony Gwynn was so much better a hitter than he ever got credit for, Prince Fielder and Brandon Webb as well as Bob Devaney, Dan Devine, and Chuck Daly.
In today's episode of Showtime with Coop, we dive deep into the life and career of Rick Mahorn, a key member of the Bad Boy Pistons, and explore his thoughts on today's NBA. Michael Cooper sits down with Mahorn to discuss his journey through the league, his experiences with legendary teammates and rivals, and the impact of the 1980s on the modern game. From playing football in high school to his days with the Washington Wizards (Bullets), Rick Mahorn shares his stories and opinions on a variety of topics, including the AAU, newspaper era vs social media era, Bill Laimbeer, Lakers vs Celtics, and the question of whether he's a "dirty player" or just a "thug." We'll hear all about Mahorn's unique stories, including encounters with Charles Oakley, Dan Roundfield, Wes Unseld, Bob Lanier, Maurice Lucas, and Artis Gilmore. Rick also talks about mastering the defensive art of "pulling the chair" and his perspective on the toughest players he encountered in the NBA. Don't miss the lightning round, where Mahorn shares stories about Dave Bing, Michelle Obama, President Barack Obama, ML Carr, Chuck Daly, Coach John Thompson, Isiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, and more. Discover the origins of the Bad Boy Pistons and the secret behind their victory against the Lakers in 1989. Plus, Rick Mahorn talks about the "phantom foul" on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, NBA Lakers conspiracy theory, and WNBA conspiracy theory. The 1992 Dream Team is considered the best team ever assembled and for good reason, take a look at the roster below. Their most important game was the gold medal game vs. Croatia in the 1992 Barcelona games. Best team ever going for the gold? Yes, please as a podcast episode, and with the Tokyo games fast approaching we figured this was good from a timing standpoint. Croatia and their former country Yugosalvia's emergence on the world basketball stage was the reason USA Basketball decided to fill their roster with NBA players so it was fitting they played them for the gold. Croatia had NBA players in their own right in Tony Kukoc, Drazen Petrovic, and Dino Radja. We did a very in depth breakdown on this period in Croatian/Yugosalvian basketball during our "ONCE BROTHERS" documentary recap that you should check out. In this episode we discuss: Isiah Thomas' notable omission from the Dream Team, while Chuck Daly was head coach The influence the Dream Team had on international basketball for decades to come Michael Jordan's stardom at an all-time high Charles Barkley having a great Olympic games both on and off the court and how he parlayed that into a great 1993 nBA season for the Suns Watching dream team highlights was awesome Marv Albert and Mike Fratello doing nothing to keep viewers tuned in Larry Bird and Magic Johnson being elected captains John Stockton played with a cracked bone in his leg? Scottie Pippen's contract dispute and him taking it out on Toni Kukoc in the pool play round The Croatian's hanging in this game for a little bit much, much, more.... The NBA used to send legendary coaches like Chuck Daly, Dr. Jack Ramsay, Hubie Brown, & Lou Carnesecca overseas to teach the game to coaches in Europe. But as ESPN's Fran Fraschilla explains, when it comes to the current playing style, the students have become the teachers.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Qué me vas a decir tú a mi?" Y acto seguido, pam. Qué me vas a decir tú a mi?" Y acto seguido, pam. It’s our pleasure to announce that we have Rex Walters on the podcast today! Walters was a can’t-miss talent who played with a lot of pride and passion for both Northwestern and Kansas. After leading Kansas to a Final Four appearance, he was selected 16th overall in the 1993 NBA Draft by the New Jersey Nets. He went on to have a successful 7 year NBA career with the New Jersey Nets, Philadephia 76ers, and the Miami Heat. Walters carried that same passion that he had as a player onto the sidelines for his coaching career. He spent a few seasons as an assistant coach for Valparaiso and Florida Atlantic before taking on the head coaching role at the latter. Most of you may remember his time as the Head Coach at San Francisco from 2008-2016, but our Nevada Wolfpack fans will remember his 2018-2019 season as an assistant to Coach Musselman at Nevada. We had so much fun hearing about Walter's journey to the NBA. He shared so many great stories about his background and development as a young player. We also learn more about his Final Four run, rookie season in New Jersey, those grueling Heat vs Knicks series, playing for Pat Riley, his transition from being a player to a coach, his role in the movie Blue Chips and so much more! The passion this guy had as a player was unmatched and you can see that same attitude in his coaching as well. But what really came across in this episode is his love for the game. We felt it and we know that you all will too. Thanks again Coach Walters!Hope you all enjoy this one as much as we did.Also- If you love Coach Walters in this episode then you might want to check out his Podcast titled "Real Talk Basketball with Rex Walters". It is definitely worth the listen!

The Last Dance was a once in an a lifetime opportunity for him. This would not have happened without Michael Jordan. Jordan needed to give the okay. For a guy as famous as MJ has been, he is a really private guy. That is what makes the "Last Dance" so special. The journey to making this has been long. It is interesting that Chuck Daly coached the Dream team and Isiah Thomas was not on it.

Founded in 1966, Five-Star Basketball Camp was the brainchild of two New York City basketball junkies, Howard Garfinkel and Will Klein, who shared a singular passion and purpose: Creating a top-notch teaching camp to help kids improve their games. Fate has been good to Five-Star. Future Hall of Famers, Hubie Brown and Chuck Daly, taught and lectured at that very first session. Bob Knight invented ‘teaching stations’ as the camp’s lead instructor a year later. Dozens of legendary coaches, including Rick Pitino and John Calipari, all launched their careers at Five Star. More than a cradle for coaches, Five-Star has been a proving ground for the everyday blue-collar player and blue chips alike: Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, Dominique Wilkins, Isiah Thomas, Chris Mullin, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Carmelo Anthony, Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving, and Karl-Anthony Towns have all worn the iconic orange and white t-shirt. In this episode of Positive University, bestselling author Jon Gordon talks with Coach Brendan Suhr, one of the most respected figures in basketball with nearly 30 years as a coach and executive in the NBA and 13 seasons as a coach at the collegiate level. Jon and Coach Suhr talk about Creating Ultimate Buy-In, Maximizing Talent, Bringing Out the Best in Others (and Yourself), Being the Best Coach in Business, Sports and Life… and much more. This message applies to leadership, team building, coaching, parenting and any area of life where you lead others. A few takeaways from this interview: There’s no limit to hard work. If you want to be a winner, you have to be willing to do the work. You can’t skip steps. Value the sacrifice. It helps you become and develop into the person you need to be. Be open and willing to learn. Never underestimate the power of relationships. Invest in others and have others invest in you. Your work ethic, enthusiasim and positivity can surpass almost anything. Be comfortable enough to have greatness around you. Hire the best people possible. To be a good coach you must learn to connect with people. Internal leadership is important for an organization to grow. The lost art of holding each other accountable. To create Buy-In you have to create Believe-In (value others opinions, don’t tell them everything to do, let them contribute). Take personal responsibility. Don’t try to always blame others. What is your role in it? Shout praise, whisper criticism. Don’t just tell people what they should do. Show them how. When someone makes a mistake, correct the behavior. Don’t berate the person. Command and Control is the old way. It’s now about Seek to Connect. To develop people, you have to be connected to them. Your credibility and competency contribute to buy-in. You people have to believe in you to buy-into what you’re saying. If you’re not learning from those you lead, you’re doing it wrong. The notoriety of a coach comes from the execution of the players. It’s never about you. It’s about your team, your employee, your child, or whomever you are responsible to lead.
