Samantha entered sales after moving to Austin and being drawn to the energy and culture of sales, the competitive environment, the ability to build her own book of business, the people and fast-paced atmosphere were the biggest drivers. What Sales Enablement Is (and Is Not) Sales enablement has evolved beyond traditional L&D (Learning & Development). It is no longer just training or professional development. Modern sales enablement focuses on driving the sales process, helping sellers close deals faster, improving sales productivity and developing the right mindsets and behaviors. L&D serves the whole organization; sales enablement is specific to the sales org. What Sellers Need to Be Equipped for Success The most critical focus is a customer-centric approach. Relationship-building is more important than just "getting the meeting." Sellers should aim to become a trusted resource, not just a vendor, build long-term customer relationships and short-term wins are easy; long-term relationships drive sustainable success. Cold Calling & Prospecting Philosophy Samantha agrees that meetings matter—but they should be pursued with strategy and value, not just metrics. Effective prospecting requires researching what matters to the customer, understanding why it matters, and clearly articulating value. Cold calling without value is just "throwing things at the wall." Role of Sales Enablement Tools Tools include CRM, internal systems, data resources, and content. Sellers must first be exposed to tools early (despite information overload). Enablement focuses on high-level understanding of frameworks and strategies and application, especially through role play. Role playing helps sellers sound natural and authentic, avoid reading scripts and build conversational confidence. AI is increasingly used to support practice and application. Skill retention requires ongoing practice—like muscle memory or sports. Research & Preparation Sellers should deeply research their customer and the customer's customers. Understanding the full ecosystem helps sellers communicate broader value. This approach resembles a modern, automated version of a sales readiness checklist. Driving Tool Adoption (Especially CRM) Tool adoption fails when middle managers aren't bought in. Success requires buy-in at all levels: Executives, Sales enablement, Middle managers and Sellers. Managers must reinforce tools during one-on-ones and team meetings. Enablement should test tools with pilot groups, gather feedback and adjust based on real usage. Sometimes tools don't fail—they're just being used differently than expected. "Fail forward" and pivot based on how sellers actually work. CRM Challenges & the Future CRM resistance is common across sales organizations. Current problems include complexity, too many fields/tabs and poor usability. Samantha believes CRM is entering a new phase, driven by AI with more automation, less manual input and more "behind-the-scenes" functionality. The future of CRM should reduce friction for sellers. Our guest today is Samantha Phillips, aka, That Sparkly Insurance Chic! She's spent over a decade coaching childcare leaders about risk management and empowering them to make wise business protection choices. She is nationally recognized as an advocate for early childhood, breaking ground by educating educators in an often overlooked area. She's not just an insurance expert (although she definitely is that), she is a valuable resource and a beacon in the early childhood community adding a sparkly touch to the vital task of protecting what matters most! She's also the VBS coordinator at her church and teaches a Kindergarten Sunday School class. She's passionate about doing what's best for children in early childhood so I'm excited to bring you this conversation with Samantha Phillips. Today, she is going to share her insights on Insurance companies that are dropping childcare centers, leading to concerns about insurability. Samantha will also discuss with us why classroom teachers need to understand the impact of insurance on their job security and what can be done to increase insurability (like thorough documentation of procedures and compliance, property maintenance, and proactive measures). Samantha is going to share her heart with us on why Insurance is critical for early childhood programs, and following procedures and policies is essential! I know insurance is not something most of us think about regularly, but have you ever thought about the fact that your school has to carry a pretty substantial insurance policy just to be in business at all? With so many things having the potential of becoming a lawsuit these days, we've got to take some things more seriously. So, your part in all of this is to be intentional in asking yourself, am I doing my very best to be sure that there is the least amount of risk possible to me and the children in my care? Maybe even take a moment and see if there's something YOU see that your director might not have thought of yet that would make a difference in the safety and security of your children. Take compliance with licensing standards seriously – even the ones that you think are ridiculous. Every school must have insurance and If compliance is low, insurance opportunities will disappear. Samantha Phillips is an insurance broker who specializes in insuring child care centers, a job that is especially tough this days as ECE businesses struggle to find and keep insurance. Costs are soaring. Samantha said she has a client in Massachusetts whose insurance DOUBLED, from $25,000 a year to $50,000 a year .. and the client had never filed a claim. And paying that amount was the client's only option.That's just one example Samantha shares during this podcast. She also gives examples of court verdicts and settlements stemming from cases in child care centers that are affecting premiums, as well as how licensing inspections are playing a role in skyrocketing costs.Samantha also gives tips on how to keep your current insurance, which is getting harder and harder to do, as well as what you can do to shop around to try to find lower prices. One such tip is to write an insurance narrative to show that you have a strong management team and that your approach to protecting your property is proactive rather than reactive. They also talk about what policies you should have — no matter the size of your school, case studies of actual child care owners changing their insurance to provide better coverage, and how to avoid situations that cause financial ruin and loss. [22:26] One of the biggest mistakes that Samantha sees is folks not knowing what their business income limit for interruption is. She recommends an amount of up to 12 months of revenue plus expenses. Another mistake is owners paying parents out of pocket instead of using an accident medical policy. [30:47] The foundational policies that Samantha recommends, regardless of school size are accident medical, business auto liability and a commercial package policy. [34:29] Samantha gives an example from New Wonders Learning Center in New York where they increased certain policies and saved money overall. [43:37] Three takeaways from Samantha: 1. When it comes to insurance, quality over quantity. 2. As a child care center, if you are charging premium prices for enrollment, why wouldn’t you apply that to the business insurance you get as well? 3. If you are premium is not even, then you are most likely in surplus lines, which should really just be a backup and not your first choice.
