What if addiction isn't the problem, but the solution to pain you never knew you were carrying? Anita Chellamah looked like she had everything. She appeared on Top of the Pops with Legs & Co, fronted and co-wrote The Cherry Bombz, supported Poison on tour in America, performed at the legendary CBGB in New York and on the Reading Festival Main Stage, was a member of Toto Coelo, who reached No. 6 in the UK charts and No. 4 in Australia, and became one of the first presenters on Sky Television and one of its first presenters of colour, hosting her own shows and performing Sky's 5th Anniversary song. From the outside, it looked like success in every direction. Behind the scenes, however, she was quietly battling addiction. At just 19, while performing in the West End production of Bubbling Brown Sugar, she was prescribed amphetamines by a private doctor who was later struck off. By her late twenties, nights began with champagne, continued with cocaine and ended with Night Nurse. At 29, she stopped. She hasn't had a drink or a drug since.Today, Anita is a trauma, addiction and DBT therapist with nearly four decades of sobriety. Qualified since 1998, she works in private practice, receiving referrals and working with organisations including the Priory, Steps Together and Castle Craig, specialising in addiction, trauma and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) with individuals, couples, families and groups. Anita explains why rock bottom rarely looks like the movies, why childhood trauma, shame and emotional pain so often drive addiction, and why recovery is about far more than simply putting down the drink or the drug.We explore the hidden links between trauma, ADHD, binge drinking, cocaine addiction, alcoholism, codependency, self-worth, mental health, emotional regulation and long-term recovery. Many spiritual battles don't begin with the circumstances around us. They begin with what is happening within us. Just as a soldier's breastplate protected the heart and lungs from life-threatening attacks, we explore what God's righteousness protects within the believer and what it truly means to "put on" the breastplate when shame, guilt, condemnation, and accusation begin to speak the loudest.Together, we trace the story of righteousness from the Garden of Eden and humanity's fall into sin, through God's promise of redemption, and ultimately to the finished work of Jesus Christ. Along the way, we discover that righteousness is not a spiritual achievement earned through effort or good behavior. It is a restored relationship and right standing with God that is freely received through grace by faith in Christ alone. This foundational truth changes not only how we understand salvation but also how we approach every spiritual battle we face.The session examines why legalism, rule-keeping, and self-effort can never produce the peace that comes from genuine righteousness. We look closely at 2 Corinthians 5:21 and its powerful declaration that Christ took our sin so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. We also explore Ephesians 2:8–10, seeing how Paul beautifully holds together salvation by grace and the call to good works without allowing Christianity to become a religion of performance. Good works are not the means of earning God's acceptance but the natural fruit of a life transformed by His grace.We also spend time discussing an important practice that many believers overlook: confession and repentance are not reserved only for the moment of salvation. They remain essential parts of the ongoing process of sanctification, helping us maintain close fellowship with God, guard our hearts from the enemy's accusations, and respond quickly whenever the Holy Spirit brings conviction. Rather than living under condemnation, we learn to walk in the freedom and confidence that come from continually receiving God's grace.The session concludes with a memorable picture of our new identity in Christ. Like a young child joyfully dressing up in a father's oversized clothes and confidently declaring, "You can call me Pops," believers have been welcomed into the family of God. Fellow Welsh musician and broadcaster Mal Pope tells Matthew about her life. Dissident Hong Kong bookseller Lam Wing-kee was arrested and held for more than four hundred days by the Chinese authorities. They were investigating the publications sold at his Causeway Bay Bookstore, some of which were critical of the Communist regime on the mainland. He became a symbol of freedom of speech after he revealed his incarceration at a news conference. The journalist and author Emily Feng interviewed him. In 1988 Colonel Abdul Ahad Momand became the first, and so far only, Afghan citizen to travel into space. He was part of the three-person crew that launched from Kazakhstan on board the Soviet Soyuz TM-6 spacecraft. During the trip, Colonel Momand, who was a Muslim, became the first person to read from the Koran on TV while in orbit. SynopsisWeather permitting, there's a good chance you'll be attending an outdoor symphonic concert tonight that will close with Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture, complete with a volley of booming cannon shots, church bells, and dazzling fireworks.It's become an American tradition to perform the 1812 Overture on July 4, even though it has nothing to do with the 1776 War of Independence — or America's War of 1812, for that matter.No, it's all down to Arthur Fielder and the Boston Pops.For years, a wealthy American businessman named David Mugar financed an outdoor Pops concert on Boston's Esplanade on the Fourth of July. But by the mid-1970s, attendance started to decline, so Mugar suggested that if Fiedler would close the annual concert with the 1812 Overture, people might be lured back by the live cannon fire Tchaikovsky asks for in the piece.Well, it worked. Outdoor concerts with the 1812 Overture plus cannons quickly became a tradition, and in 1976, 400,000 people attended the Boston Pops' outdoor Bicentennial Fourth of July concert — setting a Guinness World Record for best-attended classical concert.
