In this episode, three HPNA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB) Committee members reflect on their lived experience- how positionality impacts the way they show up to their work as hospice and palliative care clinicians and researchers and how they've shifted from cultural competency toward cultural responsiveness. Together, these experts discuss how our knowledge and actions must evolve in the face of new information, and how we can foster a healthcare environment that not only acknowledges but celebrates individual identity and culture. Whether you're a clinician, researcher, or anyone passionate about making healthcare more equitable, this conversation provides valuable insight into how we can all "do better" by truly seeing each person as they are.   Nancy Dias, PhD, RN, MSN, FPCN® Nancy Dias is an Associate Professor in the Nurse Science Department at the College of Nursing. Her work experience in nursing includes both experiences in the United States and internationally (India and Oman) as a clinician, educator, administrator, and a researcher. She completed her PhD at Duke University School of Nursing and a 1-year T32 post-doctoral fellowship from Indiana University School of Nursing. As a researcher, she has a niche for a very significant and innovative aspect of pediatric palliative care services that includes caregiver health outcomes, their bereavement processes, social and structural determinants of health, and innovative technology. Her academic initiatives have focused on transforming educational curriculum to integrate a nursing curriculum with a goal “charting a path to achieve health equity”. Her entrepreneurial skills are exemplified through her role as a co-founder of the Indo-American Evidence based practice Academy and development of an innovative app for bereaved families. She has received several research grants and among many awards, she is the recipient of the Research Nurse of the Year Award 2020, from North Carolina Nurses Association. She has also been recognized with several other awards including, East Carolina University College of Nursing Outstanding Faculty award (2022), Outstanding Mentor award from Sigma Theta Tau's Beta Nu chapter (2024). She was inducted as the Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing in 2024. She has international collaborations with nurses in India and Egypt and mentors these nurse scientists with whom she shares common research and scholarship interest. She has several publications and presentations done locally, nationally, and internationally.  Adrienne Jones-Adamczyk, MBE, RN, ACNP-BC ACHPN®, HEC-C Adrienne Jones-Adamczyk MSN, MBE, RN, ACNP-BC, ACHPN®, HEC-C is a Senior Clinical Ethics Specialty Program Director for Banner Health. She has more than 14 years of experience as a board-certified Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and is an Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse. She has spent her career in Neuroscience, Palliative Medicine, Home Hospice, and Hospice GIP settings. The clinical conundrums and ethical dilemmas of the COVID-19 pandemic inspired her to continue her education in bioethics, and she obtained a Master of Bioethics degree in May 2023 from Harvard Medical School. She continues her work in equity and human flourishing as an active member of the HPNA Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Committee. Katherine Doyon, PhD, MED, RN, CHPN® Kate Doyon is an assistant professor at Boise State University, School of Nursing. The episode features an interview with Rebecca Brewster, the President and COO of the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI). She discusses her background and how she came to work in the trucking industry. She explains ATRI's role as a non-profit research organization that identifies and addresses the industry's top research priorities through a diverse Research Advisory Committee, made up of relevant industry players from carriers, to shippers, to brokers, and vendors who support the trucking ecosystem. Throughout the episode, Rebecca highlights several recent ATRI studies, including research on the operational costs of trucking, which provides detailed benchmarking data for fleets, as well as studies on the growing issue of "nuclear verdicts" against trucking companies. She also delves into ATRI's work examining the challenges of electrifying the trucking fleet, a hot topic as a result of recent California regulation. This part of the conversation is especially compelling, as ATRI's research shows the significant infrastructure and grid capacity issues that would need to be addressed to meet the governmental requirements. Throughout the conversation, Brewster emphasizes ATRI's commitment to providing objective, data-driven research to inform decision-makers, rather than engaging in advocacy or lobbying.Rebecca stresses the importance of industry participation in ATRI's research process, as well as the organization's efforts to widely disseminate its findings through user-friendly summaries. She demonstrates ATRI's deep understanding of the complex issues facing the trucking industry and its dedication to helping address these challenges through rigorous, independent analysis.***Episode brought to you by Rapido Solutions Group. I had the pleasure of working with Danny Frisco and Roberto Icaza at Coyote, as well as being a client of theirs more recently at MoLo. Their team does a great job supplying nearshore talent to brokers, carriers, and technology providers to handle any role necessary, be it customer or carrier support, back office, or tech services.***

In this episode of the Speaking Out of Place podcast, Professor David Palumbo-Liu interviews Dr. Jennifer Gómez about her new book, The Cultural Betrayal of Black Women and Girls: A Black Feminist Approach to Healing from Sexual Abuse, which takes on the particular difficulty of centering the voices and experiences of Black women and girls when confronting sexual violence in the Black community. Jennifer M. Gómez is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work and a Faculty Affiliate at the Center for Innovation in Social Work & Health at Boston University, and a Board Member and Chair of the Research Advisory Committee at the Center for Institutional Courage. Her primary research focus is cultural betrayal trauma theory (CBTT), which she created as a framework for understanding the mental, behavioral, cultural, and physical health impact of violence on Black and other marginalized youth, young adults, and elders within the context of inequality. Written while she was a 2021-22 Fellow at the Stanford University Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences (CASBS), her book, The Cultural Betrayal of Black Women & Girls: A Black Feminist Approach to Healing from Sexual Abuse (American Psychological Association; 2023), provides individual, interpersonal, and structural strategies for healing.“So many of us have experienced things along this vein, and when we know that, then the feelings of isolation can be interrupted with this understanding that many of us have been through these things. And if that person over there can experience joy, well maybe I can experience joy too, and maybe this is a different kind of harm and cultural betrayal. Sexual trauma and abuse as a collective community-level harm, that means community-level healing and personal healing. The radical hope piece for me - but it isn't hope. That's like toxic hope of like everything will be okay, everything will be fine! Instead, it's like - No, things are crappy. They're awful. And how can I still experience joy and happiness and believe that the world can be different even in the face of all the evidence suggesting otherwise? And how powerful that is. And I think the orientation that this framework has includes understanding your history, understanding your past.”https://jmgomez.orghttps://www.apa.org/pubs/books/cultural-betrayalTwitter: @JenniferMGmez1 www.palumbo-liu.com https://speakingoutofplace.comhttps://twitter.com/palumboliu?s=20

In today's episode of Speaking Out of Place we speak with Dr Jennifer Gomez about her new book, The Cultural Betrayal of Black Women and Girls: A Black Feminist Approach to Healing from Sexual Abuse, which takes on the particular difficulty of centering the voices and experiences of Black women and girls when confronting sexual violence in the Black community. In her foreword the book, Thema Bryant, President of the American Psychological Association writes, This important work … is a love song to the survival of black sis and trans women and girls. For love to be liberating it must see and affirm survivors holistically. Gomez calls psychologists and other mental health providers to adopt courageous compassion, which means sharing concern and outrage at the realities of sexual violence as well as concern and outrage for the injustices that contextualize the trauma and recovery process for black women and girls. In our conversation Dr. Gomez explains how she fought to reconcile the need for solidarity in the Black community with the demand that the abuse of Black women and girls be confronted and healed. Alongside this struggle was her effort to change the ways psychologists and others silence these traumas.Jennifer M. Resources Data & Society Privacy, Security and Digital Inequality by Mary Madden (Data & Society, 2017) Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University Overwhelmed: Work, Love and Play When No One Has the Time by Brigid Schulte News Roundup Social media giants tidy up ahead of big day on Hill Ahead of appearances before the House and Senate intelligence Committees this coming Wednesday, social media giants appear to be tidying up. Reddit has announced that it will now ban content from Nazi and alt-right groups.  Twitter announced that it will now ban the online media outlets RT and Sputnik. Twitter says the two sites are platforms for Kremlin messaging. Both Facebook and Twitter said that they will be more transparent about who is placing political ads on their platforms. The companies said they will begin to include links and other information enabling users to know who sponsored a political ad. The companies will also vet advertisers to weed out bots. But some Senators, including Virginia's Mark Warner are noting that explicit ads may only represent a tiny percentage of ad spend. Many expenditures, they say, are coming from content that appears to be legit--organic content designed to stoke emotions in favor of a political party. Mark Zuckerberg also upped his pr game last week. The Hill reports that Zuckerberg will be investing $45 million of his own money to address mass incarceration and the housing crisis. Still, however, Facebook is expected to reveal at Wednesday's hearings that the number of views Russia-sponsored ads garnered is closer to 126 million. This is compared to the 10 million views it initially reported. And Politico reports that in August and September of 2016, Twitter made a bizarre change to its privacy policy amidst research into the way in which Russian operatives may have been manipulating the platform. The company updated its privacy privacy to require all users associated with deleted accounts to clear their tracks by deleting the content on their end as well. Also revealed last week by the Senate Intelligence Committee--Twitter actually pitched RT to buy ads during the 2016 campaign season--the problem is that the company didn't disclose it. Congresswoman Maxine Waters is also demanding that Twitter turn over information about Russia-linked accounts that targeted her. The Congresswoman said that she noticed several mysterious accounts tweeting lies about her every time she tweeted  something negative about Donald Trump. On top of everything else, Axios and Survey Monkey released a study saying 54% of Americans think the issue of Russian meddling is a "serious issue". However, those results were along party lines with Democrats tending to think the issue is more serious than do Republicans. Apple doesn't want shareholders to tie senior executive diversity to CEO performance  Apple is asking the Securities and Exchange Commission to step in and prevent a shareholder proposal from taking effect which would base the assessment of the CEO's performance, in part, on the diversity of the ranks of Apple's senior executive team. The shareholder cohort that is pushing for the measure is said to hold almost $10 billion in Apple shares. Ali Breland reports in the Hill. Georgia wipes out election data after being sued for voting violations On July 3rd, election reform advocates concerned about the impact of Russian influence on the 2016 election filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia which attempted to force the state to retire its antiquated election technology. And then Kennesaw State University, which runs the state election system, wiped everything on the voting system clean. The FBI is said to have taken a back-up image of the system back in March. But advocates say the State of Georgia must have had something to hide. Frank Bajak reports for the Associated Press on widespread concerns that outdated election systems in voting districts throughout the country may already be compromised by Russian actors and others seeking to undermine the electoral system. Facebook by lawsuit saying the company attempted to evade overtime pay rules Former Facebook employees are suing the company for deliberately evading overtime pay laws by misclassifying them as managers.  David Kravets reports in Ars Technica. Uber faces yet another discrimination lawsuit Uber is facing yet another discrimination lawsuit. This time, Latina engineers accuse Uber of not promoting or paying them at a rate that is comparable to their male, white and Asian counterparts. Joel Rosenblatt reports for Bloomberg. U.S. widened surveillance of "homegrown extremists" under Obama U.S. Air Force training slides obtained by a surveillance researcher at Human Rights Watch pursuant to a Freedom of Information Act request show the U.S. expanded its surveillance of suspected "homegrown violent extremists" in August of last year.  The guidance states that physical or digital surveillance of such suspects is authorized whether or not they're tied to a foreign terrorist organization. Dustin Volz reports in Reuters. FCC to roll back media ownership rules/Lifeline The FCC announced its agenda for its November 16th Open meeting. Trump's FCC plans to eliminate the media ownership rule that prevents a company from owning a full power TV station and newspaper in the same market. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai also wants to place a cap on Lifeline subsidies for low-income broadband subscribers. That subsidy now stands at $9.95/month. The cap would limit the availability of Lifeline support to new subscribers. Brian Fung reports for the Washington Post and Jon Brodkin reports for Ars Technica. Tech industry releases AI self-regulatory framework The Information Technology Industry Council, which boasts tech giants Facebook, Apple, Google, Microsoft and others as members, released a set of guiding principles around the industry's development of artificial technology. ITI President Dean Garfield says the  framework is intended to eliminate harmful bias, prejudice and discrimination from AI algorithms. Will Yakoqicz reports in Inc. SoftBank drops bid for T-Mobile SoftBank is ending its plan to merge its Sprint unit with T-Mobile, according to a report in the Asian Review.  This is the second time Softbank has abandoned its effort to acquire T-Mobile. The first time was during the Obama administration when the deal would have been faced with much harsher scrutiny.

Lisa Conboy is a health researcher who has worked with Harvard and New England School of Acupuncture. She is involved in a study funded by the Army to examine how acupuncture can treat Gulf War Illness symptoms. For background, in 2008, the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans’ Illnesses concluded, “The extensive body of scientific research now available consistently indicates that Gulf War illness is real, that it is the result of neurotoxic exposures during Gulf War deployment, and that few veterans have recovered or substantially improved with time.” That’s a hell of a long time to suffer. We’re talking 1990-1991. "Gulf War illness is typically characterized by a combination of memory and concentration problems, persistent headaches, unexplained fatigue and widespread pain, and may also include chronic digestive problems, respiratory symptoms and skin rashes." The study is free of charge to Gulf War vets and includes four to six months of customized treatment. They provide a modest travel stipend and use local acupuncturists to make it easier to participate. One of those acupuncturists is my brother Mark. He joined us in-studio to tell us about Chinese Medicine and what study participants can expect.
