1979 veröffentlichten Thin Lizzy ihr Album "Black Rose: A Rock Legend". Do Anything You Want To". In 1993 a film emerged entitled Judgment Night featuring some high-profile starts (of the time), Emilio Estevez, Dennis Leary, Jeremy Piven, and Cuba Gooding Jr. to name a few. However, more notable than the actors, and shoot, even more notable than the movie itself, was the film's soundtrack. Released on Immortal Records (home to West-Coast legends, Funkdoobiest & Volume 10) the Judgment Night soundtrack took the fusion of rock and rap to a whole new level. By pairing acts like Biohazard, Teenage Fanclub, Sonic Youth, and Mudhoney with Hip-Hop acts such as Del The Funkee Homosapien, Onyx, Sir Mix-A-Lot, and De La Soul, the Judgment Night soundtrack made fans see a clear path to what would later become "Rock Rap" and inspire such acts as Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park. Listen as Sean Kantrowitz talks to journalists and musical performers from the soundtrack to find out more about the history and experience of what it was like to be a part of something so ahead of it's time.Follow our socials @hiphopgoldrush and @stupidflymediaSupport Stupid Fly by checking out our merch at www.stupid-fly.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
We don't necessarily intend for our two albums format episodes to end up mapping the reach of genres we discuss on We Have A Technical, but they often end up that way. This week is no exception as we take up a new(ish) stay the course record from Die Form in their dark and slinky industrial/minimal synth style, and the post-goth grandeur and honesty of Weep. We're also running through the just-announced lineup of Seattle's Mechanismus festival.

Rock Rap and Real Folk - not that Americana crap
First and foremost, we want to share our respect to Nipsey Hussle. RIP young soldier. In this segment, we begin to explore the similar histories of the Rock & Roll genre as well as the Hip Hop genre. Here we are going to analyze the trajectory of these two types of music, how history tends to repeat itself, and forewarning that the younger of the two should pay attention to what happened to the former. We also talk about female musicians in both the Rock and Rap genres and their uphill battles. We also discuss what drives the Rock movement vs Rap movement and address the hypocrisy of some complaints seen in Rap that was also apparent in Rock. This is our PSA warning shot to rappers and others within rap culture to be mindful of your roles within that environment and others who enter it. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, but it's so so important to solidify your position and the position of your people in the game so that the new folks don't push you out. Heed this warning because as we always emphasize history tends to repeat itself. Hope this is helpful and as always thanks for watching. As always thanks for listening and also remember to subscribe/follow for more episodes. Pop Art Painter Jamie Roxx (www.JamieRoxx.us) welcomes PHOENIX RISING (Rock Rap) to the Show! www.phoenixrisingofficial.com PHOENIX RISING, based out of Dallas, Texas, came together in 2017 in the most unlikely of places: a Craigslist ad posted by Vocalist Kent Summerour in search of like-minded musicians who not only wanted to make music with substance, but who wanted to create a live spectacle like nothing else in the local music scene. After a short search and a lot of luck, the ad was answered by five seasoned musicians one of whom was Australian. Comprised of a second vocalist, guitar, synth and a whole lot of rhythm, PHOENIX RISING was born. PHOENIX RISING have gained steady momentum winning MDX Magazines "Best New Band" Award and opening for National Acts such as Saving Able, Orgy and HED P.E. as they continue to draw emotion from the listener and inspire fans with their powerful stage show Media Inquiries: Curtain Call Records www.curtaincallrecords.com

So a stand-up comic, a literary scholar, and a behavioral scientist walk into a lecture hall, and a Western American historian hands them the question, "What’s so funny about pop music?" Join comic Shane Mauss (From Conan, Jimmy Kimmel, Showtime, Comedy Central, Netflix and host of the science podcast “Here We Are”) and CU professors Adam Bradley (author of The Poetry of Pop and director of the Laboratory for Race and Popular Culture, the RAP Lab) and Peter McGraw (co-author of The Humor Code and director of the Humor Research Lab, HuRL) for an evening of learning and laughter. Why do some subjects shock us in speech but amuse us in song? What makes both Bruce Springsteen and Kanye West laugh? Through a blend of stand-up and science, music and comedy we’ll unlock some of the mysteries of two primal urges: shaking our butt and laughing out loud. This event is sponsored by the Center of the American West and its ongoing Humor Initiative, which explores the value of humor as the equivalent of WD-40 in friction-filled times, in collaboration with the RAP Lab and HuRL. The Humor Initiative is made possible by the generosity of Bill and Jane Reynolds.
Speaker: Amina Boubia, Sciences Po Centre for International Studies Discussant: Cristina Moreno Almeida, LSE Chair: John Chalcraft, LSE Amina Boubia presents her paper which studies the role new music genres such as rock and rap have played in the Middle East and North Africa during the Arab Spring. She argues that music is a powerful form of collective action and should therefore be taken seriously by academics and stakeholders as it can either effectively strengthen contentious movements emerging in a specific context, thus challenging the established order, or, on the contrary, contribute to supporting the status quo. Recorded on 11 October 2016. This seminar forms part of the Social Movements and Popular Mobilisation in the MENA Research Network.

Filmmaker Ron Dawson talks about creating experimental documentary ImprovJam: A Musical Convergence of Jazz, Rock & Rap. ImprovJam captures the improvisational jam sessions of three of Seattle's finest jazz musicians, a rock guitarist, and a freestyle rapper. ImprovJam was filmed on location in the music room of Garfield High, a school with a rich musical history, boasting one of the finest jazz teams in the nation, and alma mater to such musical legends as Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, and contemporary rap artist Macklemore. What happens when Ron and his crew takes nine video cameras including two Canon C100's, two T3i's, two 70D's, and four Panasonic GH4's - and records the convergence of jazz, rock, and rap is nothing short of magical. [APWW #654] [Originally aired 2012] In this episode, Afropop Worldwide travels to São Paulo, the 20-million person Brazilian megalopolis, to report on the explosive music scene stirring among the city's cosmopolitan youth. São Paulo is hardly the Brazil you see on the postcards - it's a city of endless high-rises that stretch on into the horizon, covered in colorful graffiti and snarled with traffic. But it's also a place where people, ideas, sounds, and technologies come together and get scrambled-up like nowhere else in South America. On this program, we delve into the music of being made in São Paulo as a window into the Brazil of the future. First, we head to the city's sprawling outskirts to explore São Paulo's long and vibrant relationship with hip-hop culture. Then we check out the local indie scene, where artists like Holger and Lulina seamlessly mix Brazilian traditions with the latest sounds from the US and Europe. We visit local record shops, an Afro-Brazilian music fair and DIY venue for underground music, and speak with everybody from São Paulo legend Arnaldo Antunes to up-and-coming songwriter Thiago Pethit, hip-hop innovator Rodrigo Brandao and bluesy rockeira Bárbara Eugênia. Produced by Marlon Bishop and Julia Furlan.
