Tuesday, April 8, 2025 Hoover Institution | Stanford University The Hoover Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific Region hosted Trump and Taiwan: A Big, Beautiful Relationship or the Deal Maker's Ultimate Bargaining Chip? on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 4:00-5:15 pm PT at Shultz Auditorium, George P. Shultz Building. We are only in the first quarter of the first year of President Trump's second term, but we've all already experienced a dizzying pace of activity. Whole federal agencies have been shuttered, some longstanding agency core missions have been upended, and we are suddenly in a trade war with unknown consequences. Ukraine has been dumped, then courted again. Canada is threatened with annexation, Greenland with invasion. In the midst of this chaotic approach to governance, the U.S. Indo-Pacific policy is still to be defined. There are some disruptions such as new tariffs (though forecasted long ago), and the suspension of development assistance, but one could also cite policy continuity (e.g. AUKUS and the Quad) and a slew of traditional, conventional practices (e.g. leader visits with joint statements and annual military exercises). Yet absent the release of strategic documents such as a national security strategy, and absent a major address by the President or Cabinet official, the overriding feelings in the region are uncertainty and unease. This very much includes Taiwan. While Taiwan has pro-actively taken steps to earn the “right” kind of attention of the new U.S. Administration such as announcing major investments in the United States and increases to its defense budget, many critical questions remain. Are we on the cusp of a closer, stronger relationship with Taiwan with enduring commitments, or are we building trade space for President Trump's next big deal with China? Mr. Schriver will explore these important topics based on his three decades of policy work related to Taiwan and the Indo-pacific, as well as his services as a senior official in the first Trump Administration.
My guests today are commissioners from the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, Randall Schriver and Kimberly Glas. Randall Schriver is the Chairman of the Board of the Project 2049 Institute and a partner at Pacific Solutions LLC. He is also a lecturer for Stanford University's “Stanford-in-Washington” program, is on the Board of Advisors to the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, and is on the Board of Directors of the US-Taiwan Business Council. Kimberly Glas is president and CEO of the National Council of Textile Organizations. She served previously served as executive director for Blue Green Alliance and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Textiles, Consumer Goods and Materials at the US Department of Commerce. She also worked on Capitol Hill, where her efforts helped lead to the establishment of the House Trade Working Group.

This Michigan lawmaker wants to 'Make Gay Marriage Illegal Again'Raw Story, By David Badash, The New Civil Rights Movement, on December 3, 2024https://www.rawstory.com/this-michigan-lawmaker-wants-to-make-gay-marriage-illegal-again/Josh Schriver, a Michigan state representative, is advocating for a regressive agenda by attempting to outlaw same-sex marriage in the state. Claiming to be Michigan's "most conservative" representative, his efforts reflect a performative stance rather than a genuine political strategy, as even his own staff resigned en masse following his controversial proposals. Public backlash aligns with national statistics showing 69% of Americans opposing such a ban, highlighting Schriver's miscalculation of societal and political support. His rhetoric extends beyond marriage equality, targeting transgender rights, reproductive health, and gender-affirming care, all under the guise of personal moral convictions often rooted in conservative religious beliefs. The discussion highlighted how personal beliefs, particularly religious ones, can dangerously influence political decisions. Cindy argued that such stances stem from a combination of entitlement and a superiority complex, as politicians like Schriver actively seek to revoke rights already established for over a decade. She also emphasized the broader consequences of normalized bigotry, drawing parallels to the aftermath of Trump's election in 2016, which emboldened similar hate-filled rhetoric. AJ expanded on this, stressing that religious dogma must remain separate from public service, as imposing these beliefs erodes individual freedoms. Yet, Rob countered that while such compartmentalization is ideal, it's often unrealistic given how deeply religious convictions shape moral worldviews. He proposed that societal education and early prevention are critical to avoiding these regressive ideologies in governance. The panel concluded by discussing the alarming potential for these backward policies to erode societal norms and legal rights. Schriver's actions represent a broader, dangerous trend of using fear and hatred against marginalized groups as a political tool, exacerbating divisions and rolling back decades of progress. The Non-Prophets, Episode 23.50.2 featuring Infidel 64, Cindy Plaza, AJ and RobBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-non-prophets--3254964/support.

In this episode of the ChinaPower Podcast, we are joined by Mr. Randall Schriver to discuss Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen's recent transit of the United States and broader cross-Strait issues. Mr. Schriver explains the context behind President Tsai's latest transit through the U.S. and what made this transit both in line with prior transits and unique and successful. Mr. Schriver suggests that it is still too early to see the full Chinese response, but concerns about Taiwan's presidential election next year could cause Beijing to have a muted reaction to Tsai's transit. Regardless of China's reaction, he sees the Taiwan-United States relationship continuing to strengthen into the future. Mr. Randall Schriver is the Chairman of the Board of the Project 2049 Institute and a strategic advisor to Pacific Solutions LLC. He is also a lecturer for Stanford University's “Stanford-in-Washington” program, is on the Board of Advisors to the Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA, and Board of Directors of the US-Taiwan Business Council. Prior to that, he was a founding partner of Armitage International LLC and Chief Executive Officer and President of the Project 2049 Institute. His civilian government roles have included Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Affairs and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs.

Most shame-based messages are I am _____, and then we fill in the blank with whatever it may be. Most of our shame is unconscious. We have compensatory behaviors develop typically from an early age that set a course in our lives that everything we do is unconsciously driven by trying to avoid that feeling of I am (shame-based message) and to keep others from discovering this about us. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Ragan Schriver, PsyD, MSW. Ragan is an Associate Professor of Practice at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work as well as the Director of the MSSW Program, Knoxville Campus, and chair of the Forensic Social Work Certificate Program. They discuss the idea of healthy shame can assist in understanding our limitations, but when we become overwhelmed with negativity, shame can limit our perspective. We discuss shame from a neurological perspective and some ways shame shows up in four general categories. Finally, we discuss how a therapeutic relationship can provide mirrors to question some of our shameful beliefs about ourselves and right side a sense of who you are. Berné Brown says, if you put shame in a petri dish and you add secrecy and silents and judgement, the thing is going to go crazy. But if have shame and add in empathy and invite others into this experience, then that will stunt the growth of shame. Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Debby Schriver. Debby Schriver is a cult expert, an author, and a human rights activist whose projects connect us to common, core values that lift the human spirit. Schriver earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her study of psychological and sociological development began in college and has been an integral part of her career as an educator at UT and as a writer. “Whispering in the Daylight: The Children of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and Their Journey to Freedom” is based on numerous interviews from group members and, more importantly, on interviews with the children—second and third-generation followers. Schriver chronicles how this group was formed, documenting its many abuses and its gradual adoption of cult-like behaviors and practices. Her extensive research – including interviews with Tony Alamo himself, harrowing visits to Alamo compounds, and witnessing gut-wrenching confrontations between freed children and their unreformed parents – tells the story of a closed group whose origins and history are unlikely ever to be definitively unraveled.
Matt Besser is a comedian, actor, writer, director and founding member of The Upright Citizens Brigade. He also hosts the weekly podcast improv4humans. He tells J. Keith about the two word prompts he’s banned at shows (hint: one’s a type of fruit and the other is a type of animal), and how it came about that he’s featured on his very own Topps baseball card. Lyric Lewis is an actress and Groundlings Theater performer who’s perhaps best known for her role as Stef on NBC’s A.P. Bio. You may also recognize Lyric from Comedy Central’s Drunk History, and she tells us about an upcoming episode she did about “Cleopatra’s punk ass little sister”. In this episode, we’ll learn about how Matt adapted the visual format of improv to an audio-only medium, how Lyric used astrology to sort out potential dating prospects, and why Matt claims his memory is spotty, even though Lyric has a hard time believing him. What’s the difference? What’s the difference between “damping” and a “dampening”? What’s the difference between “club soda” and “seltzer?” Areas of Expertise Matt Besser: Arkansas cults, Arkansas Razorback football post-1978 and the film Repo Man Lyric Lewis: The film Jurassic Park, Greek mythology and astrology. Appearing in this episode: J. Keith van Straaten Helen Hong Matt Besser Lyric Lewis With guest experts: Debby Schriver, an author whose book Whispering in the Daylight: The Children of Tony Alamo Christian Ministries and their Journey to Freedom is about to become a documentary. From the moment I read the book The Go-Giver by Bob Burg and John David Mann, I knew I was going in the right direction at Networking Today Intl. cause we love to give and it has come back to us 100 fold! One of our favorite organizations to give to is Volunteer Ministry Centers (VMC) because they are working to get the homeless into housing... they teach how to fish instead fo handing out a fish and repeating the same thing over and over expecting different results! Great interview -- thanks Zan Schriver!
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Follow Linda on Social Media @ Chickfitstudio on Facebook Instagram and Twitter and my website is www.chickfit.me Social Media- Elaine www.JackLanne.com Facebook - Elaine or Jack Lanne Before Jillian Michael's, Tony Horton, Kasiafit, Denise Austin, and Jane Fonda there was Jack the pioneer and "Godfather of Fitness", He is responsible for many of the fitness staples in the industry today some of which are the; protein bar, protein shake, leg extension, leg curl, cable pulleys, and so much more. Learn all about the making of this fitness icon and the wife beneath his wings, Elaine . She is 91 and rocking her age and still lectures all over the country. I love, eat, and breathe fitness, so I was beyond honored to interview The First Lady of Physical Fitness, Elaine . She is the wife of fitness legend Jack . I'm not going to lie. I got pretty teary-eyed when I was preparing for this podcast about Jack and Elaine . Together they have created the most amazing legacy that we all still benefit from today. You know what they say; behind every great man is an incredible woman. Elaine is nothing less than incredible! At 91 she puts us all to shame. Elaine does full push ups, takes no medication, and is as sharp as a tack. In this episode we talk about how Elaine, the then smoker and donut lover, met Jack, The Godfather of Fitness and he changed her life forever. Jack also had a life-changing event happen to him; perhaps that was why he was so interested in making an impact in other people’s lives. Jack was ill as a teen and his entire life was changed from a lecture by Paul Braggs of Braggs Aminos. This was a lecture in which Jack was almost turned away because it was sold out. Paul made room for Jack and his mother right up front. Talk about divine intervention. As Jack got older he wanted people to realize that age was just a number. He set out to prove it by completing surreal physical feats, one of which was his infamous swim from Alcatraz to the mainland with his hands and feet shackled behind his back towing a 1000 pound boat at 60 years young. Jack really stood in the gap as a pioneer. He was responsible for so much of what we see today in fitness, from creating the selectorized weight machines, cable/pulley machines, and leg extension, to having the idea for The Smith Machine. Jack and Elaine encouraged and introduced women to the weight room, back then they were of the thinking that women belonged in the kitchen and not in the weight room. The backwards thinking was that women would look like men if they weight trained. Also the thinking in that day was men in sports shouldn’t weight train, because they wouldn’t be able to move as fast and if they were muscle bound and that it would slow them down. Jack ,The Godfather of Fitness, was amazing from the sheer feats of physical fitness he performed, to the machines he created that still we use today. Jack was also responsible for creating the first protein shake and protein bar. Jack was such a pioneer and an icon in the industry and his wife was right alongside him being on the air helping him do all that he did. She is a fabulous lady and I am so inspired by her. I met her at the World IDEA Blog Fest and it was an instant connection. She was such a gracious lady. I took a leap and asked her if she would do a Facebook live video with me and she did. It didn't take the first time so I had to get up the courage to go up and ask her again and she was such so gracious. We did it one more time and now I’m interviewing her for a second time on my podcast. ”Life favors the bold.” 1. Move it or lose it 2. Fruits and Vegetables cleanse the system. 3. Every cell in your body is continually changing. Your body is new every seven years. 4. Why its important to have a good gut. 5. The effect of good microbiome and a great probiotic. 6. Jack wanted to prove that if you take care of yourself it doesn't matter your age 10. People are old because they're told their old. 11. ARC is Elaine's secret and mission in life. A-Attitude R- Resistance C Consistency. 12. Sign up for Maria's Schriver's Sunday Paper free. 13. A funny story of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jack working out. 14. Jack always said "If you do everything in moderation you can't go wrong." 15. "It's not what you do some of the time that counts its what you do all of the time that counts." Jack Lanne 16. When someone has a birthday Elaine has a piece of cake but she says Jack was always very disciplined and never deviated. 17. At 91 Elaine is living strong lecturing and writing a new book. 18. The story of how Elaine met Jack and fell in love. 19. Face exercises to keep you looking young. 20. Why Jack wore ballet slippers and where he got the idea to wear a jumpsuit. 21. This is a first for us… Derek Schriver of Schriver Carmona & Company, the partner of Chris Carmona – a previous guest, joined us for this week's episode of Life In Accounting: The Where Accountants Go podcast. The rest of the story… After interviewing Chris Carmona a couple months back, I found the story of how they began that firm so interesting that I thought it would be beneficial to get Derek's input as well on how they decided to start the firm as well as his own career journey of course. And for the record, Derek said Chris got the details “99% correct”. You will be able to tell from both interviews that Schriver Carmona & Company definitely has a healthy culture and an impressive record given that it's only been 6 years since they formed the company and acquired their first practice. Acquiring a practice… This interview was different in that I took the opportunity to find out many more details about the practice acquisition process and how they made those decisions. If you are considering starting your business by acquiring an existing practice, this episode will be extremely valuable. Derek shares insight on the important items to consider when looking at a practice such as the transition timeline, make-up of the team, etc. He was 28! It will surprise you after you listen to all the detail that Derek shares, but at the end you will hear Derek reference the fact that he was only 28 years old when all this started with the acquisition of the first firm. You'll also hear that his background was primarily audit, and that the practice they acquired was primarily tax-based. Derek truly removes all the excuses from anyone thinking about following in his footsteps… except that of hard-work. He definitely references the need for a strong work ethic, particularly in the early days. I hope you enjoy this episode. It's a gold mine if you are considering ever starting your own firm.
