Interview with Klaire and Alex of GUJI 咕叽, EP of GUJI 咕叽, a quirky synth-driven new wave quartet comprised of Chinese nationals Klaire (synths), Alex (bass), Stacy (drum machine) and American guitarist and singer for Shanghai punk band Round Eye Chachy with an interview. The EP will be released in late Summer August 25 by Floridian label Godless America. The EP was produced by frequent Modern Sky Recordings producer Li Wei Yu To say 2020-2022 were bleak years to live in Shanghai would be the understatement of the century. With the implementation of the “0-Covid policy” and the “Shanghai Lockdown”, a fucked attempt by the CCP to curb the transmission rate of the Covid-19 pandemic, the city became still. Businesses shuttered, schools closed, planes landed, shows cancelled and borders closed. For three years, China seemed without pulse as very little traffic ran between it and the outside world. Guizhou native Jiang Zi Xiu (Klaire) and Craig Englund (Chachy) were stuck in their home for months as a makeshift wall of plywood and bamboo rods was raised at the entrance and exits of the alleyway outside their door. Guards in hazmat suits were placed to conduct daily PCR tests and make sure no one came in or out. It was under these conditions that the couple decided to fill their time and their walls with the double lead harmonies, jangling B-52 styled guitar and cheesy drum machine pulse of the sardonic bubblegum-arpeggiated synthpop of GUJI咕叽. Heavily influenced by the aesthetic of 80s DEVO, B-52s, and My Little Pony the duo channels their frustrations and observations into vivid DIY videos channeling the work of Chuck Statler and blast humorously sardonic synthpop jams lined with pastel colored neon lights. With their first self-titled EP, they turn their anger into childish jeering fun in an overwhelmingly hostile political landscape and with songs like “I like to Hang Out in China” and “My Mao Suit” the band waves at the outside world with hammer and sickle and dares those who listen to not strip and dance in the hot pink fire.

After two months of a gruelling strict lockdown, Shanghai has emerged a changed city, some residents say. During the 65 toughest days, some were reduced to begging for food and pleading for access to their young children from whom they'd been separated. The regime wasn't just brutal, some claim, it was largely fruitless, as the omicron strain of Covid continues to spread now. What's more the economic fallout for China's commercial capital, and key supply chains across the country and internationally, are only gradually becoming apparent. What's the legacy of Shanghai's zero-Covid experiment? Producer and Presenter Ed Butler Studio mix by Neil Churchill Production coordinators Iona Hammond and Gemma Ashman Editor Penny Murphy

Over the past few months, China's COVID control measures - as highlighted by the Shanghai lockdown - have not only created new operational disruptions for companies, but also amplified the underlying and long standing challenges of operating in China. With life now returning to normal in Shanghai, it's time for companies to shift their focus from short-term COVID response to the longer-term challenges of doing business in China. Angela Mancini, Partner, and Yifei Zhang, General Manager for East China, discuss the lessons that should be learnt from the Shanghai lockdown, the prospects of China's next zero-COVID chapter, and what organisations should focus on and prepare for right now. Twenty percent of China's international trade flows through Shanghai, so when the port was hit by a lockdown at the start of April 2022, the repercussions quickly rippled across the globe. Companies such as Apple, Tesla, Adidas and Este Lauder all warned of disruption to their supply chains and the likelihood of higher costs for consumers. The enforced period of isolation has been a worrying time for Shanghai's 25 million residents. In this week's podcast, Frank Tsai - who's been confined to his apartment in Shanghai for many weeks - speaks to presenter Duncan Bartlett about his experiences and considers the economic implications of China's so-called “zero-Covid” approach. While in Australia we're now learning to live with COVID, that's not the case in China. For more than a month, dozens of cities including Shanghai have endured strict and at times bizarre lockdowns, as authorities battle to contain an outbreak of Omicron, and the capital, Beijing, could be next. Today, ABC East Asia correspondent Bill Birtles on why the Chinese government could stick to its COVID-zero policies for years to come. Featured: Bill Birtles, ABC East Asia correspondent

This may be one of the most (if not THE most) important episodes we've ever done. We chat with Elizabeth Lui who has been living in China for 17 years, the bulk of which has been in Shanghai. She walks us through the reality of what is happening right now in Shanghai and her words tell of a haunting humanitarian crisis while ringing a shrill warning bell. This is not an episode to be missed... we cannot state that clearly enough. She takes us through every bit of the restrictions and the impact it has had on their lives. From splitting 1 egg between 2 people for food conservation to disguising herself in a hazmat suit to go outside. Again... this story NEEDS to be heard. It's a strange time in Beijing right now, with mandatory testing and food flying off the shelves at supermarkets. Sports take a back seat, as Mark and Haig brace for a possible lockdown (0:52). Will the Asian Games in Hangzhou — scheduled for September this year — be postponed (6:02)? What kind of spectacle could we expect – bubble or not (8:21)? Haig talks about Shannon Bufton, a competitive cyclist turned Beijing bike maker and route planner (9:20).We catch up again with Cameron Wilson, who — one month later — is still in lockdown (15:00). He shares his lows of the past month, plus the occasional high (17:53), but at least the food situation has improved with the arrival of an army of delivery drivers (19:24). China's case-counting headscratcher — and the new definition of cases “in society” — has once again muddied the situation (20:02). It's a little like Lord of the Flies in Cammy's compound, with four recent cases, despite weeks of being locked at home (21:26). Cammy hits his stride here, arguing that this outbreak was entirely predictable, and asks why on earth more people haven't been vaccinated (23:00). He's been in Shanghai for more than 16 years: Has he reached his limit (24:58)?In a seamless transition to football, former Manchester United and Belgium player Marouane Fellaini has returned to China ahead of the start of the CSL season (27:43), which will expand from 16 to 18 teams this year, despite the widespread financial insecurity (29:07). Could a small Shandong city host this year's league in a bubble (29:28)? And is the 2023 Asian Cup, set for China next June, in doubt (31:12)? When is — or should be — the cutoff date for making a decision on whether or not to hold it here (32:42)? Finally, Cameron leaves us with a story about banging pots and yelling out of the window (34:00).See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Covid-19 restrictions in Australia have eased further over the weekend as we continue to adjust to living with the virus, but for the more than 25 million people who call Shanghai home, life looks very different as they remain in one of the world's toughest lockdowns. Reports of people being forced to stay in their homes without even basic food, medicines and other essentials are widespread, even though the Chinese Government is trying to play them down. The Quicky speaks to a woman who recently escaped from Shanghai and an expert in China to find out what is really going on in one of Asia's biggest cities, and why the Communist Government is still pursuing a policy of Covid zero when everyone else has determined that it's just not realistic. At a time when most parts of the world are easing COVID restrictions and even mask mandates, Shanghai is in the middle of a brutal lockdown. There have been reports of a sharp spike in the number of cases, although reported deaths are and restricted to the very old. Shanghai's 25 million residents seem to be increasingly fed up with the government's ‘Zero COVID' policy, which has caused supply chain bottle necks resulting in shortages of food and other essentials, and denial of medical care for patients with non-COVID illnesses. There have also been reports of little children getting separated from parents forcibly sent away to quarantine shelters. Until this March, there was a general sense that China had managed the pandemic way better than the West, especially when viewed in terms of the total case load and mortality numbers. So how did thing things get out of hand all of a sudden? Is it a case of the ‘Zero COVID' strategy backfiring? Is it the Omicron variant? Given that President Xi Jinping has taken personal ownership of the ‘Zero COVID' strategy, is China likely to make a course correction in view of the economic fallout and public disenchantment with the stringent lockdown measures? Joe Biden – after his supply-chains speech – turned to his right and shook hands with thin air in a highly worrying display of declining mental health. The video has been viewed 16,000,000 times within 3 days in Twitter. He then turns away from the camera and appears lost and confused, before wandering off. No matter which side you believe, the optics are bad: Russia announcing that its flagship cruiser in the Black Sea, the Moskva, had sunk while being towed. It was after a fire on board, says the Kremlin, a Ukranian-made Mercury type missile, claims Kyiv. The Russian response quick in coming bombing a factory southwest of the capital that makes Neptune missiles and throwing up new unconfirmed claims that Ukraine's hitting targets across the border.

Covid-19 in Shanghai is causing widespread distress as the government continues with its biggest city-wide lockdown since the start of the pandemic. The city of 25 million is closed for regular business while authorities conduct massive testing. China is one of the only places in the world still following a zero-Covid policy. The city government has asked residents "to support, understand and cooperate with the city's epidemic prevention and control work" as it attempts to stamp out the virus. Corin Dann spoke with Beijing correspondent Patrick Fok, who said the lockdown has outlasted expectations, and no one knows when it will end.
