Byrd, Matt, Lux and Kevin discuss Shinji Higuchi's recent Netflix film Bullet Train Explosion.  Higuchi's latest revamp of an old tokusatsu IP is a remake/sequel to Toei's 1975 classic disaster film The Bullet Train.  Like its predecessor, the story revolves around a bomb on a bullet train, which will explode if the train slows down under 100kph.  Show how does Higuchi's latest fare in comparison to the original film and his other recent tokusatsu reboots?  Listen and find out!

TO THE MEETING ROOMS WE GO!Our ATLA intermission is over, back to the Godzillathon! It's been a while since we visited our good friend Hideaki Anno, and now it's finally time to take a look at what he cooked up during the lost years between Eva 3.0 and 3.0+1.0. As Anno struggled with his mental health while trying to get his final Evangelion movie into production, Toho approached him and director Shinji Higuchi to do a brand new take on the King of the Monsters after the massive success of Hollywood's new entry. What followed was the creation of a modern classic so iconic, the two filmmakers have continued to make reimaginings of existing IPs under the "Shin" umbrella to this day. So, how does Toho's first foray back into their biggest franchise after 12 years hold up? Come watch with Brian and Alec to find out as they take a look at the movie that reignited Hideaki Anno's passion -- Shin Godzilla!

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This week Trevor is joined by Richie AKA MdntAgntRAW from the Super Media Bros. Podcast to review Takashi Yamazaki's, Godzilla Minus One (2023)! Released domestically in October, Godzilla Minus One (2023) is the the most recent Japanese produced Godzilla film since Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's critically acclaimed, Shin Godzilla (2016). A post-war period film, Godzilla Minus One returns the franchise to its roots, exploring not only horrors of nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but also the painful process of rebuilding following the nation's unconditional surrender. While Godzilla Minus One exceeds expectations in terms of the quality and breadth of its effects driven destruction sequences, in truth, the film's greatest strength comes in the form of it's very raw, and compelling characterizations and themes. At times feeling like an apology to the Japanese public for the intentions and actions of the long since defunct Empire of Japan, Godzilla Minus One boldly confronts many of the traumas endured by the Japanese, both civilian and military, during and immediately after the Pacific War. Horrifying, beautiful, uplifting, and occasionally quite funny, Godzilla Minus One is a fantastic film that deftly utilizes the franchise framework to unexpectedly deliver a compelling human drama that exceeds all expectations. An truly exceptional Godzilla film, fit for the Big G's 70th anniversary. The second film in the Heisei Gamera trilogy reunites director Shusuke Kaneko, SFX specialist Shinji Higuchi, and writer Kazunori Ito for an ambitious alien invasion film. This time, the titanic turtle's opponent is the creepy-crawly colony of space bugs, the Symbiotic Legion; a kaiju that brings the biblical barbarism from Neon Genesis Evangelion front-and-center to the Gamera experience. Legion's got Ian asking, “What's up with bugs in the ‘90s?” He and Joseph go on an exciting excursion through the canon of great pre-millennium insect critters – the Zerg from Starcraft, the Arachnids from Paul Verhoeven's now-beloved but then-derided Starship Troopers, and so on. Later, Joseph drops another cortex-crushing take on the psychological subtext to Gamera's triumphant return to the screen. All that plus a solid discussion of post-apocalypses in film and video games and why we could use fewer of them. "WELL GANG, WE REALLY WERE A NEON GENESIS EVANGELION (1995)." Much of Evangelion 3.0 was made the way it was due to the intent of it being part one of a two-part final chapter, with part two initially set to release just one year later in 2013. However, due to Anno's declining mental health, the movie was put on indefinite hold, with no clear release for years. Fortunately, once he felt healthy enough after directing Shin Godzilla with Shinji Higuchi, he quickly got back to work, and despite COVID delays, the long-awaited final ending to Evangelion released worldwide in 2021. So, after all this time, with 25+ years of history and anticipation, how did this movie wrap things up? Tune in and sync up with Brian and Alec to find out!

Luke Brown and Lily Edwardes-Hill get together for a stimulating exploration of Shin Godzilla (Hideaki Anno & Shinji Higuchi, 2016), the first Japanese Godzilla film since 2004, and a considerable financial and critical success: it was made for 15 million and grossed 78 million whilst also winning the equivalent of Japan's Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. The podcast discusses how it differs from the American Godzilla films; how it may be seen as a response to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster. The conversation explores how the film fits into the Godzilla canon and how it departs from it, arguing that narratively it mainly shrugs off the canon but nonetheless cites it with visual references and particularly through its use of music. Luke and Lily discuss the meaning of the film's title in Japanese and why the English translation was ultimately rejected as a title for international release. Luke argues that it is a film about Tokyo and about Japan and that in this iteration there is a return to Japan as a place and as a people with, ultimately, a belief in the establishment and the ability of the people to deal with disasters; a film that is very aware of Godzilla's past and present and also that of Japan, one with unique attributes, but also exhibiting a return to themes of climate change and nuclear technologies missing in a lot of recent reiterations of the character. There is, of course, also a discussion of CGI, models, etc. A podcast worth listening to.

Directed by the legendary Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, this film goes back to basics and shows us what a natural disaster like Godzilla looks like when it strikes with such intensity only for the response to take forever to get going. The film continues the tradition of being inspired by devastating real-world events, but with the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion at the helm, it also takes a deep inward look at the ugliest parts of ourselves too. In this week's installment of Catching Up On Cinema's March of the Monsters event month, we review Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi's modern monster classic, Shin Gojira (2016)! Produced only a few short years after the Tohoku earthquake and subsequent Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster of 2011, the film boldly reinstates Godzilla's status as the living embodiment of a nation and people's fears and insecurities, not just of nuclear technology and weapons, but of their complicated and delicate position in the geopolitical landscape. Starring a cast of thousands, and filled with equal measures of biting political commentary and bold nationalistic sentiments, the film swept the Japanese equivalent of the Academy Awards. Brilliant, engaging, and innovative in every way that a movie can be, Shin Gojira is a truly exceptional film that non-Godzilla fans should consider adding to their watchlists.
