Dare to Learn
Simon Cohen | Liderazgo Compasivo: La conexión entre plenitud, propósito y liderazgo

Dare to Learn

Our mission in life is to find your gift.

In this episode Kate speaks to the hugely inspirational Mr Simon Cohen. Simon hit the headlines when he gave away his communications agency Global Tolerance for the riches of family life! Simon initially followed a conventional path to wisdom. In his search for answers, he studied Theology at university, but was instead faced by a cul-de-sac of questions. He started a traditional career in advertising, but in choosing status and salary over personal values, he failed to find happiness. At the age of 24, he decided to defy society's ideas about what it means to be wise, wealthy, and happy today. He set up Global Tolerance, a communications agency to spread messages of hope. In the following decade, Simon travelled the world, representing the Dalai Lama, Gandhi's grandson, and many of the world's wisest women, men and children. Simon was a regular Pause for Thought contributor on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2. In 2013, he became the first person in the UK to place his whole company on sabbatical. A sought after keynote speaker, his talk Challenging Conventional Wisdom was the most popular talk on Trendhunter, the world's leading trend site, for six months running. At the end of the sabbatical, spent writing and considering what would be best for Global Tolerance and his family, Simon came to a momentous and (some say) crazy decision. It was time to give away the company he founded. Simon launched the first ever Open Leadership Exercise (OLE), handing over 95% ownership of Global Tolerance, £10,000 in the bank, a state-of-the-art website, a decade of business contacts, and all the company assets! He hopes that business leaders around the world will consider their own version of an OLE as a new, values-driven type of exit strategy. Simon is currently writing a book, blogging for the Harvard Business Review, Entrepreneur Magazine, Huffington Post, and gives keynote talks around the world - as long as he can take his family with him!

He is widely recognised as the unique individual who gave away his £1m PR agency, Global Tolerance. to follow his heart and focus on what he valued the most – his family. Today, on The Best Version Of You, Simon shares his views on the power of the media, and how he leveraged it on a mass scale, citing the campaign to see ‘Jedi' listed as a religion, something that got global coverage around the world. The 2001 census, which saw 390,000 people catagorise their religion as ‘Jedi ‘, sparked an idea for a campaign to create debate around tolerance. Global Tolerance, his then agency, arranged for two ‘Jedi Knights', Umada and Yunyun, to deliver a letter to the United Nations Association on 16 November (the UN's International Day of Tolerance), requesting the day be marked as the Interstellar Day of Tolerance. All it cost the agency was the price of the costumes, £70. This campaign famously reached nearly 700,000,000 people. Simon, also an inspirational speaker shares his words of wisdom and inspiration with the entrepreneurs of the future: “Every single one of us can design and define what success looks like in our own terms. The only limit is your imagination.” As well as business, he applies his strategies in the wisdom field, representing world leaders and thinkers including the Dalai Lama and Gandhi's grandson, and has a regular non-religious Pause For Thought segment on Chris Evans' BBC Radio 2 show. A regular commentator in the international media, he has written for Newsweek, Washington Post, The Huffington Post, The Times, and The Guardian. To reach out to Simon you can follow him on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook @mrsimoncohen - especially if you identify as a Jedi Knight!

September 11, 2009 What is the role and responsibility of the media in a post 9/11 era? How can we protect ourselves from images that leave us feeling helpless, fearful and insecure? In his presentation, Simon Cohen, Managing Director of the London-based Global Tolerance, drew out the example of the "other 9/11:" September 11, 1906, when Gandhi first deployed his method of nonviolent resistance. By comparing both anniversaries and their legacies he explored the unparalleled power of the media to influence perceptions about faith in society, for better or worse. Globalization and the social communications revolution linked with Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube empower us all, in new ways, to discover and promote faith's positive potential to contribute to a more just, tolerant, intercultural, and interreligious world.
