And Isaac? Isaac's family is great. Supportive, kind, and surprisingly intellectual — but can they help keep Isaac out of trouble? Probably not. == CREDITS == Soundtrack “Stronger Remembered” by Sayer Roberts “Hustle and Bustle” by Sayer Roberts “Energized Morning” by Airae, Epidemic Sound “There You Are” by Peace Reels, Epidemic Sound “Yesterday's Treasures” by Jon Bjork, Epidemic Sound “Bayati” by Feras Charestan, Epidemic Sound “Nemesis” by Alec Slayne, Epidemic Sound “Love Avalanche” by Headlund, Epidemic Sound “Is That All” by Eric Feinberg, Epidemic Sound “Snow In June ” by Martin Landh, Epidemic Sound “Figured Out” by Arthur Benson, Epidemic Sound “Tiny Steps” by Spectacles Wallet and Watch, Epidemic Sound “Linkage” by Marten Moses, Epidemic Sound “Oasis City” from Tabletop Audio “Slide on Over” by Anders Goransson, Epidemic Sound “Echo Chamber” by Alan Carlson-Green, Epidemic Sound “Magnetic Danger” by Wendel Scherer, Epidemic Sound “Reiteration” by Charles Holme, Epidemic Sound “Mountain Mist” by Lucention, Epidemic Sound “Hex” by Pulsed, Epidemic Sound “To Be Still” by Lotus, Epidemic Sound

Let's have an adventure!SPOILER WARNING - This Episode contains story beats and details that are drawn from $2 Creature Feature's 2nd Season, up to Episode 3. In adulthood, many of us are forced to recalibrate our relationship with joy. As responsibilities multiply exponentially, time grows limited, and challenges mount, it becomes harder to make time for fun, let alone remember what it feels like. As we explore the key components of happiness—pleasure, joy, and satisfaction—we ask the foundational question: What really brings me joy? In this special-edition, bonus episode of How to Build a Happy Life, the psychotherapist and Atlantic contributing writer Lori Gottlieb demystifies one of the vital components of a happy life: enjoyment. Gottlieb believes that we not only find it challenging to make time for day-to-day enjoyment, but also struggle to identify what it should feel like. As we wind down this series, a paradox remains in our pursuit of happiness—joy comes to those who have known pain. In order to overcome struggle—breakups, illness, even death—we must first accept and acknowledge its inevitability. Exploring the darkness of our suffering may seem counterintuitive, but often it's the only way to see the light. In this week's episode, Arthur C. Brooks sits down with BJ Miller, a palliative-care physician, to uncover how we can face our deepest fears, why we should accept our natural limitations as human beings, and how to make peace with the ebb and flow of joy and suffering in human life—an experience we all share. The road to purposeful work is paved with good intentions; but for many, happiness at work can feel like a hopeless cause. What if the secret to happiness at work has less to do with our extrinsic motivations—money, rewards, and personal gain—and more to do with our intrinsic motivations—the meaningful relationships we build, and the ability to be in service to those who need it? In this episode of How to Build a Happy Life, we'll explore workplace practices to live out purpose-driven principles. We'll also talk about why authenticity is vital to strong leadership and “walking the talk,” and how to factor emotional needs into our workplaces. A conversation with Chief Happiness Officer and CEO of Delivering Happiness, Jenn Lim, helps us tackle one big question at work: Why do I do this everyday? This episode was produced by Rebecca Rashid and hosted by Arthur Brooks. Editing by A.C. Valdez. Fact-check by Ena Alvarado. Sound design by Michael Raphael. Be part of How to Build a Happy Life. If there's one thing we might regret at the end of life, it's that we missed out on moments that mattered—not because we weren't physically there, but because our mind wandered off to some unknown place. In this episode of How to Build a Happy Life, we explore why it's uniquely challenging to “live in the moment,” how we limit our own curiosity by assuming we know best, and why the illusion of stability pulls us from living every day fully, and in the moment. A conversation with Harvard University professor of psychology Dr. Ellen Langer helps us think through a daily struggle: How do I stay present? This episode was produced by Rebecca Rashid and is hosted by Arthur C. Brooks. Editing by A. C. Valdez. Fact-check by Ena Alvarado. Sound design by Michael Raphael. In the social-media age, we curate images of our lives on a screen—making it especially easy to translate images of perfection as the image of oneself. But the pressure to pretend we are perfect is exactly the thing holding us back from experiencing the happiness we seek—and limiting our ability to be our whole, authentic selves. In this episode of How to Build a Happy Life, we'll define what we mean by “authenticity” and explore the psychological underpinnings of our ego-driven identities. A conversation with the clinical psychologist and mindfulness expert Dr. Shefali helps us work through one of the most challenging questions of all: Who am I? The irony in loneliness is that we all share in the experience of it. In this episode of How to Build a Happy Life, we sit down to discuss isolated living and Americans' collective struggle to create a relationship-centric life. As we continue along our journey to happiness we ask: How can I build my life around people? This episode features Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General. Only when we admit we have a problem can we begin to find solutions. On the first episode of How To Build a Happy Life, we explore the neuroscience of emotional management, practices that help us befriend our inner monologue, and challenges to getting in touch with our feelings. Our journey to happier living starts with the question: How do I feel right now? Bluebeard's Castle's haunting tale is just the surface of this psychological thriller, and while some modern productions don't follow the original staging to a “t”, there are plenty of directors who jump at the chance to re-imagine this dark and sinister work. This episode will explore both the history behind Bartók's only opera and all the creepy details that elevate this opera to horrific standards. As a young boy, Richard Strauss went on a hiking trip to an Alpine mountaintop. Years later, his final tone poem would be inspired by this trip, the death of his dear friend and colleague Gustav Mahler, and the philosophies of Frederic Nietzsche. This piece was the focal point for several aspects of his life, and once he reached the summit of his career, he could return what felt most natural to him, home. Edward Elgar's Variations on an Original Theme (a.k.a. Enigma Variations) is one of the most mysterious and puzzling pieces of music of all time. Using a theme he referred to as "the Enigma", he depicts thirteen of his closest friends as if they were taking a stab at cracking the code. One in particular was given the chance to truly solve the case, but she never figured it out. We are how we speak, right? Well, it's complicated— enough so to spend Subtitle's next four episodes on this question. We'll tell the stories of a diverse collection of people, tracing how each came to speak the way they do. Along the way, we'll ask: Is speech a good barometer of identity? Does anyone truly speak authentically? Why are we so judgmental about how others speak? And how can we overcome our biases? In this first episode, hosts Patrick Cox and Kavita Pillay tell their stories. Jane Setter's book about speech and accent bias is Your Voice Speaks Volumes. Colleen Cotter researches the language of journalism and cultural representation. Dennis Preston is the editor of the Handbook of Perceptual Dialectology. Romona Robinson's memoir is A Dirt Road to Somewhere. Music in this episode by Blue Dot Sessions, Podington Bear, Spectacles Wallet and Watch, Honeycutts, Alan Carlson-Green, Moss Harman, Josef Bel Habib and Arthur Benson. The photos are of Patrick and Kavita when they were so very young. Read a transcript of this episode here.

Debussy dreamed about composing a theatrical work that was as mysterious and reserved as the life he contrived for himself. When a play by Maurice Maeterlinck came along, titled Pelléas et Mélisande, his dream would become a reality.
