Short: How Canada's ‘lost decade' was decades in the making

West of Centre

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 23, 2025 29:35

The Conservative Party has dubbed the past nine years of Liberal rule a “lost decade” — a period defined by stagnating wages, soaring debt and declining productivity. But Alberta Central's chief economist Charles St-Arnaud says the story is more complicated — and more alarming. In this wide-ranging and insightful interview with host Rob Brown on West of Centre Short, St-Arnaud traces Canada's economic malaise back not just to 2015, but to structural problems that have been festering for 25 to 30 years. He argues that the oil and gas boom of the early 2000s papered over deep weaknesses in manufacturing and exports. Since the 2014 oil crash, Canada has seen a collapse in investment, rising household debt and a disturbing lag in productivity. With GDP per capita now lagging behind that of peer nations, he says the country faces a pivotal moment: one that calls for renewed investment in infrastructure and productive capital, a rethink of immigration and regulatory frameworks, and a broad effort to strengthen non-energy sectors — or risk a future defined by economic stagnation.

In this episode, host Tyler Chisholm is joined by Chief Economist of Connect Alberta, Charles St-Arnaud, for an insightful discussion about the forces shaping Alberta's economy. Charles breaks down the long-term shifts in the province's economic landscape, exploring how the oil sector has evolved from boom-and-bust cycles into a more stable yet still dominant industry. He explains why Alberta's economic diversification is gaining momentum, what sectors are primed for growth, and how Canada's productivity challenges are impacting future prosperity. The conversation explores the global factors affecting Alberta, including shifting trade dynamics, geopolitical tensions, and the economic impact of tariffs. Charles provides an economist's perspective on business investment trends, the role of government policy, and how companies can navigate uncertainty in a rapidly changing financial landscape. For business leaders, investors, and policymakers, this episode offers a compelling look at the broader economic forces at play and why understanding these trends is crucial for decision-making in today's complex environment. This episode is brought to you by clearmotive marketing. Navarre Minerals Ltd (ASX:NML) managing director and executive chair James Gurry talks with Proactive's Tylah Tully about the company's recent recapitalisation, ASX trading resumption and its renewed focus on high-grade gold exploration in Victoria. Following a strategic shift back to its core gold exploration roots, Navarre now prioritises advanced exploration across five primary projects, including the Tandarra, Irvine and St Arnaud projects. Gurry highlighted Navarre's resource potential, noting that the company has defined approximately 700,000 ounces in gold resources, with a core focus on its Irvine project. "What you can expect is for us to get to work," Gurry stated, emphasising the company's clean capital structure, its $6 million cash reserve and a renewed drilling strategy. The company plans an extensive, continuous 7,000-metre drilling campaign aimed at demonstrating strong project fundamentals to shareholders and investors over the next 12 months. The recapitalisation has returned Navarre to the market at a low valuation, a move intended to position the company advantageously for growth. Additionally, Gurry shared that the company would undergo a rebranding, adopting the new name Au-Reeka in December to reflect its refreshed vision and goals. #ProactiveInvestors #NavarreMinerals #GoldExploration #ASX #JamesGurry #VictoriaGold #MineralExploration #TandarraProject #StArnaudProject #GoldMining #InvestmentInsights #ProactiveInvestors #ASXUpdate #AuReeka

SUMMARY: There it is: The dreaded “payment due in full at time of service” sign at your front desk. For many pet owners it can make the difference between seeking treatment and walking away. Sad, uncomfortable conversations about the financial bottom line are a huge cause of burnout for care providers, but it doesn't have to be that way! Our special guest on this episode of Inventory Nation is sharing a systematic approach to tailoring a clear, flexible financial strategy that fits your particular practice's values and resources.Aimee St. Arnaud, practice owner and founder of Open Door Veterinary Collective, walks Host Nicole Clausen through a new way of tackling the realities of pet care costs and collaborating to create a win-win financially and emotionally. Her team offers both consultation and courses to help practices put in place practical tools to soften the biggest barrier to care. Clients and practices alike can benefit from Open Door's step-by-step guidance around things like pay-over-time options that put the care pets need within the reach of clients on a budget. You'll come away inspired to explore new online payment platforms, train team members to have frank (but supportive) conversations and put in place a plan that takes into consideration all the variables and modulates spectrum of care and pricing accordingly. It's exciting stuff that can be transformational for practices struggling to find the balance between profitability and compassionate care in an inflationary world!Curious to know more about what the Open Door Veterinary Collective is all about? You can find out about all their resources and partnerships at this link. You can also join the Inventory Strategy Network – our free virtual neighborhood for inventory managers and other veterinary professionals – by visiting this link.KEY QUOTES: “Telling clients that you can't help them because they have no money is one of the leading causes of burnout in the vet profession.” (Aimee)“As many times as you have (the money conversation) it's still heartbreaking. How can we build a bridge to make sure not only that patients are cared for but our teams feel cared for as well?” (Nicole)“Giving (clients) a wealth of options and resources to truly make it a collaboration feels very exciting to me because it's not just a one-way conversation anymore.” (Nicole)“It takes less time to go over these plans with people and present this then it does to deal with when they can't afford the care and they give a negative one-star review.” (Aimee)“As more practices try to do (pay-over-time) and it becomes the norm, it's really going to help break this barrier to care.” (Aimee)ABOUT VCL:Veterinary Care Logistics serves veterinarians and their teams who are frustrated that their current inventory system is not functioning correctly and are facing out of control inventory costs and improperly stocked hospitals. VCL helps veterinarians through inventory analysis, comprehensive step-by-step action plans, and thorough team member training. Since the episode was only live for a short period of time, we want to make sure you have a chance to listen to this awesome interview!  Enjoy. Aimee St. Arnaud works for the Humane Alliance training vets and community advocates who want to open spay-neuter clinics. She first got the idea to open her own spay-neuter clinic when volunteering with the Toledo Area Humane Society and their Operation Felix, a monthly MASH clinic. After seeing the dearth of resources for cats and the invisibility of the problem even within the animal welfare world, she started the Humane Ohio Spay/Neuter Clinic, which performs 15,000 spay/neuter surgeries a year, 70% of which are cats. She is a big advocate of “spaying it forward,” which involves creating supportive community environments in which clinics can grow, making education resources accessible to advocates at any level, and respecting private vets in the area by referring clients of her clinic for most wellness cases.   Find her as well as a multitude of free resources at humanealliance.org.
