Using the Whole Whale Podcast

Nonprofit Sector Faces Legislative and Financial Challenges Amid Innovative Solutions In this episode of Nonprofit News Feed, George Weiner, Chief Whaler of Whole Whale, and Nick Azulay, Digital Strategist, delve into pressing issues and inspiring initiatives in the nonprofit sector. They begin with the failed U.S. House bill H.R. 9495, which sought to give the Treasury Department unilateral power to revoke nonprofits' 501(c)3 status if deemed to support terrorism. Although the bill was defeated, the discussion highlights concerns over due process and the potential for abuse, emphasizing the need for vigilance in protecting nonprofit rights. Next, the duo explores a Los Angeles Times story about nonprofits facing financial strains due to the city's mansion tax. Two organizations, the Motion Picture and Television Fund and Los Angeles Jewish Health, incurred significant taxes despite their missions aligning with affordable housing goals. This situation underscores the complexities of nonprofit tax laws and the need for legislative reform to prevent financial burdens that hinder mission-driven work. Shifting focus to solutions, the hosts discuss Bloomberg's report on Acumen's ambitious $1.5 billion investment in agricultural technology startups across developing nations. This initiative aims to enhance climate resilience and improve yields for small-scale farmers, marking a significant shift from traditional aid models to sustainable, systems-based approaches. Finally, a feel-good story from CBS News highlights "Adventures in Training with a Purpose," a nonprofit offering wellness services to veterans and first responders. Founded by former Pittsburgh Steelers player John Kalb, this organization provides comprehensive support to improve mental and physical health, celebrating its impact with a fundraising event featuring Steelers legends. Critical Insights: The defeat of H.R. 9495 demonstrates the power of civil society in protecting nonprofit rights, but ongoing vigilance is necessary. Legislative gaps, like those seen in the LA mansion tax, can impose unintended financial burdens on nonprofits, highlighting the need for reform. Acumen's investment exemplifies a strategic shift towards sustainable development in agriculture, addressing significant funding gaps in climate resilience. Call to Action: Nonprofit professionals and advocates are encouraged to stay informed about legislative developments and support initiatives that drive systemic change. Engaging in policy discussions and advocating for reform can help protect and empower the sector. Closing Thought: As challenges persist, the nonprofit sector's resilience and innovation continue to shine. By fostering collaboration and leveraging strategic investments, the sector can navigate obstacles and create lasting impact.

In the Armored Republic there is no King but Christ. We are Free Craftsmen. Body Armor is a Tool of Liberty. We create Tools of Liberty. Free men must remain ever vigilant against tyranny wherever it appears. God has given us the tools of liberty needed to defend the rights He bestowed to us. Armored Republic is honored to offer you those Tools. Visit them, at ar500armor.com https://dailycaller.com/2023/09/07/health-insurance-costs-increase-decade/ Health Insurance Costs Projected To Have Highest Increase In Over a Decade Employer health insurance costs are expected to increase significantly in 2024, affecting both workers and businesses as hospital operating costs rise, according to data reported by The Wall Street Journal. Next year, the costs for health insurance coverage from employers are expected to increase by around 6.5%, which could be the biggest increase in more than a decade, according to survey data acquired by the WSJ. Driving the increase in health insurance costs are inflated labor costs for hospitals and a large demand for expensive new diabetes and obesity drugs, which are being passed down to insurance companies in new contracts with the hospitals. Individuals who do not receive insurance from their employer but rather through the Affordable Care Act will see their premium costs rise by about 6% next year, which is comparable to the increase this year, according to the WSJ. https://twitter.com/i/status/1696593061545906458 - Play Video Well at least Joe Biden feels your pain. Workers are likely to pay more out of pocket as employers shift some of the cost of inflation down to employees, according to the WSJ. Despite the shift, a tight labor market may push employers to shoulder a bigger share as hiring and retaining workers remain competitive. Unemployment ticked up in August but remained relatively low at 3.8%, up from 3.5% in July. The U.S. added 187,000 nonfarm payroll jobs in a sign of a slowing job market. In August, the Biden administration released a list of ten drugs that Medicare will negotiate prices with drug manufacturers over in an effort to reduce costs. The negotiations are set to begin later in 2023 but will not go into effect until 2026, with companies being threatened with up to a 95% tax if they do not cooperate. https://hotair.com/david-strom/2023/09/06/uk-you-may-soon-go-to-jail-if-you-dont-upgrade-your-energy-efficiency-n576157#google_vignette UK: you may soon go to jail if you don't upgrade your energy efficiency It is hardly an exaggeration to say that the Industrial Revolution began in the UK. It was the mastery of energy–replacing muscle power with fossil fuels that fundamentally transformed everything. We still describe an engine’s output as “horsepower” for a reason: for most of human history the fastest anything could travel was the speed of a horse. Unless, of course, you were falling off a cliff. Then you could go faster, but the ride was short. The UK–which is still led by the Tories only because Labour is even worse–is looking to undo the Industrial Revolution. In a ridiculous bid to save Gaia from an imagined threat, the government is proposing to create new criminal laws that would imprison and fine people for not complying with new energy efficiency standards. Soon they will make excessive energy use–and that will be energy use that rises above “Net Zero”–could be a criminal offense. No, I am not kidding. Property owners who fail to comply with new energy efficiency rules could face prison under government plans that have sparked a backlash from Tory MPs. Ministers want to grant themselves powers to create new criminal offences and increase civil penalties as part of efforts to hit net zero targets. Under the proposals, people who fall foul of regulations to reduce their energy consumption could face up to a year in prison and fines of up to £15,000. Tory backbenchers are set to rebel against the plans, which they fear would lead to the criminalisation of homeowners, landlords and businesses. The proposals are contained in the Government’s controversial Energy Bill, which is set to come before the Commons for the first time when MPs return from their summer break on Tuesday. It provides for “the creation of criminal offences” where there is “non-compliance with a requirement imposed by or under energy performance regulations”. People could also be prosecuted for “provision of false information” about energy efficiency or the “obstruction of… an enforcement authority”. Checking in on the Hollywood Strike… https://www.breitbart.com/entertainment/2023/09/06/report-striking-hollywood-workers-facing-evictions-some-living-in-their-cars/ Striking Hollywood Workers Facing Evictions, Some Living in Their Cars As the dual Hollywood strikes drag on with no end in sight, writers and actors are increasingly finding themselves in dire financial straits, with a growing number of striking workers reportedly facing evictions as they can no longer afford to pay rent. In certain cases, some have resorted to living in their cars. Several charitable organizations that have been supporting striking Hollywood workers with grants said they are seeing housing difficulties impact actors and writers as well as blue-collar crew members, according to an account from The Hollywood Reporter. Thousands of crew members ranging from lighting personnel to makeup artists have been forced into long-term unemployment due to the strikes. For many non-celebrity actors, the strikes have been financially ruinous. “The strike has had a massive impact on my housing situation. I worked one day in May, and since then all the work has stopped,” actor David Baach told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve almost depleted my entire savings, and I haven’t been able to pay my rent the last few months. My building manager and property owners extended me a grace period due to the good social credit I had built up by doing some gardening and landscaping in our building’s common area. However, in early August, I received an eviction notice from the building’s management company taped to my front door.” Leaders of two Hollywood charities — the Entertainment Community Fund and the Motion Picture & Television Fund — told the magazine that people are losing their homes due to the strikes. “People are becoming unhoused, they’re being evicted from their apartments and they’re not paying their mortgages so eventually they will lose their homes as well. We’re talking to people who are living in their cars, in some cases with their families,” MPTF president and CEO Bob Beitcher reportedly said. The MPTF is giving away $1,500 grants to striking workers but the amount doesn’t come close to covering monthly rent in a city as expensive as Los Angeles and its surroundings. The actors’ and writers’ strikes against Hollywood studios show no signs of ending as the warring sides continue to dig in their heels on key negotiating points regarding streaming compensation and A.I. has brought TV and movie production to a virtual halt around the country, putting thousands of people out of work and damaging local economies coast to coast. https://www.hollywoodintoto.com/sound-of-freedom-number-1-latin-america/ ‘Sound of Freedom’ Nabs No. 1 Slot in 18 Latin American Countries “Sound of Freedom” isn’t done quite yet. The summer’s indie sensation finally fell out of the top 10 box office results after earning north of $180 million at the U.S. box office. Those numbers are staggering and would be the summer’s biggest story if not for a certain one-two punch dubbed “Barbenheimer.” “Freedom,” which follows a Homeland Security agent (Jim Caviezel) tracking down a little girl abducted by sex traffickers, is now a global sensation. The film scored 18 number-one slots across Latin America over the weekend, according to Angel Studios. Mexico Guatemala Honduras El Salvador Nicaragua Costa Rica Panama Colombia Venezuela Ecuador Peru Bolivia Belize Paraguay Chile Uruguay Argentina Dominican Republic The film also performed respectively in other nations during its opening weekend: #1 in New Zealand #2 in Australia #2 in South Africa #4 in the United Kingdom Disney infamously acquired the film during its 2019 takeover of 20th Century Fox but didn’t know what to do with the property. So the Mouse House shelved it for five years before Angel Studios bought the rights to the film and released it independently. The mainstream media savaged the film in cruel and unprofessional ways. Reporters attacked Caviezel for his political views and suggested the film addressed an issue that’s based on conspiracy theory more than fact. The most absurd line of attack? Some outlets used one of the 6,000+ people who crowdfunded the movie’s marketing efforts against the project. The person in question is tied up in a child custody dispute framed as “child abduction.” The film’s global revenue is still dramatically lower than its domestic haul. So far, “Freedom” has earned more than $2 million outside the U.S.

As of posting time, SAG/AFTRA (actors) and WGA (writers) were still on strike. Our guest Hawk Koch has been through a few strikes in his six decades in the entertainment industry, on both sides of the table. The studios have their offer on the table, so do the writers and actors, and talks continue. Hawk has been heartened by the Barbenheimer phenomenon with people returning to the theaters after the isolation of the pandemic. A key issue is the strange new world of streaming services, where no one knows how many people are seeing the shows, or how much revenue they are generating, thanks to the opaque nature of big tech companies like Netflix, Max, Amazon and Apple. Hawk has produced more than 60 films (from Wayne's World to Chinatown) and was head of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science. He is the one half of the only father-son duo to head the Academy (Howard Koch Sr.) When he was head of the Producers Guild of America, he worked with partner Mark Gordon to professionalize the craft and instituted the Producers Mark. Koch serves on the board of directors for AMC Entertainment, the Motion Picture and Television Fund, the Producers Guild of America, and the National Film Preservation Foundation. He lives with wife Molly in Ojai but still keeps himself busy with new projects. We talked about the accelerating rate of change in the business, and whether the studios and creative talents are worried about each other, when the looming threat of Big Tech threatens their entire way of life, through Artificial Generated Intelligence and their general disregard and lack of love for the magic of films. Hawk is a return guest from 2020 when he published "Magic Time," his memoir about growing up on movie sets and his distinguished career. We did not talk about Mack Sennett, the Lumiére Brothers or magic lantern shows.

Welcome to Times Will Tell, The Times of Israel's weekly feature podcast. This week, we speak to two of the co-founders of New Legend, a pioneering company in the field of financing Israeli television content. After Israeli filmmakers and showrunners spent years chasing government funding and local production studios, New Legend has created a new model and venture for financing film and television projects, with backing from Israeli investment firm Meitav, which will tap into its network of investors and business relationships. Gal Yashar, CEO of New Legend, and Oded Turgeman, New Legend's director of content, talk about this new model of the film and TV business in Israel, building on the country's reputation as a high-tech nation and now becoming the content nation. New Legend recently established an accelerator with the Jerusalem Film and Television Fund, selecting 11 new TV projects for development, and bringing together additional funding from leading broadcasters, including Netflix, HBO, A&E  and Israeli studios Yes and Hot. Yashar comes from the world of Israeli high-tech while Turgeman has years of experience in developing animation content. You might recognize Carlease Burke from a number of TV shows like, Crowded, Ballers, Switched at Birth, The Middle or films like, Jumanji, The Back-Up Plan or PROM, but its her new project that is starting to create more waves for Carlease, Child's Play Remake. From the 1988 original film, Child's Play, Child's Play Remake is on it's way and hitting theaters June 21st from director Lars Klevberg and producers, Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, who plan to unleash a new version of Chucky, voiced by Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. Along side Hamill is our own, Carlease Burke, Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry and Tim Matheson. The Child's Play trailer (below) shows some glimpses of the murderous Buddi doll and it set to be a suspenseful film. Carlease plays, “Doreen," a heavy drinker, who talks loud, but has a very playful relationship with her son, “Detective Mike Morris” played by ATL's Brian Tyree Henry. They live in the same building as Andy, the young boy, “Doreen” likes to look after the neighborhood kids, especially Andy and finds herself in the middle of what is a “deadly situation." Carlease, who's has played roles like, a schizophrenic homeless mother, a refined principal of a deaf school in Switched At Birth, a flashy football mom enjoying her son's money in Ballers and a foul-mouthed, truck driving lesbian in Shameless. Her roles are listed among over 140 credits. She has been a familiar face in commercials, film and television for over 34 years. One of her most exciting projects is the recent completion of Season 1 of Crowded on NBC, a sitcom created by Suzanne Martin and produced by Hazy Mills Productions. Carlease loved bringing the role of Alice Moore to life with her “tell it like it is” humor and comical moments with TV husband Stacy Keach who played Bob Moore. The cast also starred Patrick Warburton, Carrie Preston, Miranda Cosgrove, Mia Serafino and Clifford McGee. Carlease Burke was raised in Hollis, Queens and attended City College of New York where she received her B.A. in Pre-Law before pursuing her passion and moving to Los Angeles. Some of her most memorable film credits include working with Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks in The Terminal, Jennifer Lopez in The Back Up Plan, & Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz in In Her Shoes. While continuing to add to her theatrical resume, Carlease took up American Sign Language where she earned an A.S. degree in ASL Interpreting. This new language came in very “handy” for her work with Marlee Matlin in Sweet Nothing In My Ear and Switched At Birth. In her free time, Carlease enjoys traveling, cooking, swimming, cycling and taking all kinds of classes from African drumming to Lindy Hopping. She loves music and reads a lot of books. Carlease is a voting member of The Television Academy, an advocate for victims of domestic violence and boldly supports her favorite charities, The Felix Organization (adoptees enriching the lives of children in foster care), The SAF-AFTRA Foundation and The Motion Picture and Television Fund. Maureen Feldman runs the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s (MPTF) Social Isolation Impact Project. The program brings together volunteers and entertainment veterans who are in need of some company. It may come as a surprise, but even in Hollywood, loneliness is at chronic levels amongst older adults. The project is working to unite isolated senior citizens with younger, like-minded professionals through its Daily Call Sheet. The service helps older film industry members make new friends. In this LLAMA podcast interview with Peter Bowes, Maureen explains why most of us are ignoring a vital pillar of healthy aging; how we should focus on social connections early in life, to avoid loneliness in old age; and what the MPTF is doing to make sure the oldest members of society are never without friends. This is the third in a series of interviews recorded at the USC Body Computing Conference. Find out more about the event here and the USC Center for Body Computing here.In this interview discover:Why people in high pressure, demanding jobs, such as in the entertainment industry, often find themselves lonely and isolated in old age. Why looking after ourselves physically, sleeping enough and preparing financially for our retirement, is not enough. ”People are not necessarily prepared for aging when it comes to social connections.”How older people can suddenly feel isolated in the home they have lived in for decades. How growing to a great age and outliving our friends is a recipe for acute loneliness. "I have reached out and I look at everyone I meet as an opportunity for a social connection...it’s it's not that hard you just have to be present and available.”Why intergenerational programs are so valuable to reduce social isolation. It is never too late to make new friends. How the MPTF’s Daily Call Sheet is helping the aging Hollywood community find new meaning in their lives. How volunteers are teaching older adults to use mobile technology to help them integrate with the outside world. "This is a very high touch, low cost way to reach a lot of people and add some joy and create some quality at the end of someone's time.”The Live Long and Master Aging (LLAMA) podcast hacks the aging process. Peter Bowes interviews world-renowned scientists, future thinkers and biohackers, all of whom have a common goal of figuring out how we can live longer and healthier. We also talk to inspiring individuals who have already mastered the aging process. The LLAMA philosophy is that there is much can do to extend our natural health span or the length of time when we enjoy optimal health. We talk a lot about food, fasting, fitness, the brain and good fortune. If you enjoyed this episode please rate and review us here. As ever, thank you for listening.
