Homer’s Odyssey, a 12,000-line, nearly 3,000-year-old epic poem, is one of the foundational texts of Western literature. (It’s also one of the oldest surviving sequels!) It has inspired a list of movies as varied as Stanley Kubrick‘s 2001: A Space Odyssey, the Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou?, and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. But there haven’t been very many straight screen adaptations of its full story. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is just the second full-length feature film adaptation of Homer’s Odyssey ever made. It is 173 minutes long. It reportedly cost $250 million to make. And it is currently the No. 1 movie in the world, having grossed $666.7 million in just 12 days in theaters. This hour, rock star classicist and translator Emily Wilson joins us to talk Homer, Nolan, and everything in between. Plus: We impanel a full Nose to parse and dissect the movie as only the Nose can. Welcome to Play, Pause, Rewind! The world's greatest media podcast, maybe. This week, we take a look at Christopher Nolan's latest film, an adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. The Odyssey is one of the oldest surviving works of literature dating back to oral storytelling traditions from almost 2,900 years ago. Attributed to Homer, The Odyssey follows Greek warrior Odysseus on his long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Nolan's adaptation updates the myth and incorporates some thematic work that resonates with modern audiences while working to maintain the spirit of the original epic poem. The film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Robert Pattinson, and many more.Social Information:Podcast Info: https://linktr.ee/PlayPauseRewind Dylan's Info: https://linktr.ee/DDayMovies Niles' Info: https://www.instagram.com/nilesgotnostylez/Topics and Timecodes:Intro: 0:14The Odyssey: 3:10The Odyssey (spoilers): 15:29Other Stuff: 1:32:03Outros: 1:38:10

Does Christopher Nolan have a pattern when it comes to writing women? In this episode of Middle Row with Coco Mocoe, we analyze Nolan's adaptation of The Odyssey through a feminist film lens—examining how his female characters often act as emotional vessels, plot catalysts, and symbols of male regret. Drawing from Sverre Sigfussion's thesis, "Noir Guilt Complex: The Death of Women as a Catalyst for Character Development," we look back at films like Inception, The Dark Knight, The Prestige, and Oppenheimer, and map those character tropes onto The Odyssey's key female figures: Penelope (Anne Hathaway), Circe (Samantha Morton), Calypso, and Athena.

Prepare o estômago e vá com tudo.• 05m56: Pauta Principal• 1h20m25: Plano Detalhe• 1h31m15: EncerramentoOuça nosso Podcast também no:• Spotify: https://cinemacao.short.gy/spotify• Apple Podcast: https://cinemacao.short.gy/apple• Android: https://cinemacao.short.gy/android• Deezer: https://cinemacao.short.gy/deezer• Amazon Music: https://cinemacao.short.gy/amazonAgradecimentos aos padrinhos: • André Marinho Moreira• Bruna Mercer• Charles Calisto Souza• Daniel Barbosa da Silva Feijó• Diego Alves Lima• Eloi Xavier• Guilherme S. The Odyssey (2026) Directed by: Christopher Nolan Written by: Christopher Nolan Starring: Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong'o, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, Bill Irwin, Travis Scott IMDB: [IMDB LINK] Episode Summary In this episode of Mindframes, Michael and Dave discuss The Odyssey (2026), Christopher Nolan's three-hour adaptation of Homer — a $250 million epic and the first narrative feature shot entirely on IMAX 70mm. The discussion covers Nolan as an auteur and whether the "never made a bad movie" claim holds up, the practical-effects approach to the Cyclops and Circe, the deliberately cold Northern palette imposed on the Mediterranean, Ludwig Göransson's score, and an ensemble so large the hosts concede they can't get to everyone. After the ratings, the spoiler section turns to the film's central choice: the Olympian gods have been removed while the monsters remain, and what that does to Odysseus' moral agency. Comparisons range across Nolan's own filmography, Troy, The Northman, and the sword-and-sandal epics of the 1950s and '60s. Reviews Michael: 4.5 / 5 — came out thinking four, and it has only grown in his esteem since. Praises the baseline of visual and musical quality, Damon working better as a lead than expected, and a supporting cast that carries every stop on the journey. Docks it for a cast so crowded it distracts, and for an ending too in love with its own moralism. Dave: 4.5 / 5 — would watch it again in a heartbeat. Calls it a film that grabs hold of empire, heroism, reverence, and humility all at once, and rates the separation of gods from monsters as pitch perfect. His one dent in the fender: the film plays a little episodic, a series of very large encounters rather than a single build. Thematic Discussion The Odyssey removes the Olympians but keeps the monsters. Circe, the Sirens, and the Cyclops are all simply part of the natural world here; it's Athena and Zeus who stay shadowy and inferred. Michael's reading is that this absence exists to hand moral agency back to Odysseus — if the gods were visibly steering, his guilt over the Trojan Horse wouldn't be his to carry. That guilt is framed through xenia, the Greek code of hospitality. Odysseus offered a gift that turned out to be murder, and comes to believe that breaking that norm is what set his civilization's collapse in motion. The hosts draw the parallel to the erosion of political and social norms in contemporary America, and to the film's closing turn — the Bronze Age is ending because of the Sea Peoples, and the Greeks realize they are the Sea Peoples. The episode's central disagreement is over Athena. Dave reads her as constructed: she wears the face of a priestess Odysseus watched his own men murder in her temple, and the film is showing how humans build gods out of guilt and the sense that something is sacred. Michael pushes back that the film sustains a genuine ambiguity — the idea that gods appear in human form is planted repeatedly, and the priestess is decapitated at the exact moment Athena's statue is, which leaves open that Odysseus may believe they killed a god. He points to the same ambiguity in the Cyclops' cry to Poseidon, which some of the crew claim to hear and neither Odysseus nor the audience does. Neither host resolves it, and both prefer it that way. Michael's position is that the ambiguity is the answer rather than the absence of one — something underpins their world that they don't fully see and are damaging anyway, whether that's Zeus and Poseidon or simply decency and the value of human life. Dave, arriving from a position of religious faith, says he likes that Odysseus has to live in the same uncertain world the rest of us do. The structural evidence they land on: Homer ends with a deus ex machina, Athena descending to stop the cycle of revenge. Nolan cuts it. Nobody intervenes, so Odysseus abdicates, gives the throne to Telemachus, and sails west with Penelope — a change that hands the ending's moral weight entirely to the man. For this week's main podcast review, Lauren LaMagna, Josh Parham, Dan Bayer, Giovanni Lago and Brendan Hodges join me for the first time on video to review and discuss the latest cinematic event from Christopher Nolan, "The Odyssey" starring Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, Bill Irwin, Himesh Patel, Corey Hawkins, Mia Goth, Logan Marshall-Green, Travis Scott, Eliott Page & James Remar. An adaptation and production that represents everything as big as movies can get in 2026, Nolan's telling of Homer's epic poem has generated a ton of conversation for its new IMAX technology, its breathtaking practical set pieces, seemingly controversial casting decisions, its symbolism, themes, and other adaptation choices, the performances from its massive A-list Hollywood cast, and the score by Ludwig Göransson. Have you ever seen a hitman movie and thought "It's good, but it needs to be shot entirely in infra-red?" No, because no-one has - except Harmony Korine. After looking at his most famous film Spring Breakers a couple of years back, Robyn and Graham now reunite to talk about the first film from his excellently-named production company EDGELRD, a film whose strangeness is not limited to the fact that Travis Scott gives the most sensitive performance in it.Along the way, we'll discuss Scott's unexpected role in The Odyssey, and talk about that time when Korine wanted to make a whole film of people beating him up. We'll also talk about the film's, uh, distinctive promotional roll-out, its use of generative AI and its video game influences. There's also a long detour about how great the new Boards of Canada album is. That's nothing to do with the film, it's just really good. The old world is collapsing, but our Patreon remains strong - backers will get a bonus episode of this show every month, along with Graham's other podcast The Arts Hole, about all the silliest happenings in the world of arts and culture. There's also a review of classic franchises in They'll Love Us When We're Dead, weekly articles on The Twilight Zone and Doctor Who, and more. Video games didn't just become bigger than film, music and TV. They became places people went, watched, gathered, spent money, and built memories inside. In this episode of Geekstorians, Dave from Geektown looks at how gaming quietly became the largest entertainment industry on Earth, and why nobody really announced it.The story begins in April 2020, when millions of people attended Travis Scott's Astronomical concert inside Fortnite. To some, it looked like a clever pandemic workaround. But for players, this was not a sudden novelty. Fortnite had already become a venue, a stage, a social space, and a place where culture could happen. From there, we trace the rise of the pixel economy: the fragmented numbers that made gaming's scale strangely hard to see, the smartphone turning play into an everyday habit, the rise of streaming and esports, and the transformation of games from products into persistent worlds.Because somewhere along the way, games stopped being things you played and became places you went. This week's episode explores how gaming became bigger than film, music and television without a single cultural handover moment, why mobile gaming changed everything, how streaming turned games into something people watched as well as played, why esports made gaming visible at arena scale, and how Minecraft, Fortnite and Roblox changed the idea of what a game could be.For more from Geektown, including TV, film and gaming news, reviews, interviews, and Geektown Radio, head to Geektown.co.uk.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. John Cash is back with the most loaded episode of Receipts & Reactions to date — and he's calling it exactly what it is: In A New York State of Mind. In 30 unfiltered minutes, John covers the four stories that broke the culture this week and ties every single one of them back to New York City. CLIVE DAVIS IS DEAD — The Brooklyn-born music mogul who signed Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, TLC, Usher, and Alicia Keys passed away at 94. But the Black community didn't grieve quietly — and John explains exactly why. The "too Black sounding" directive. The Grammy Gala that kept going the night Whitney died in that same hotel. The grief that never went away. John holds the full tension: complicated legacy, documented receipts, no easy answers. CARDI B AND STEFON DIGGS ARE DONE — She confirmed the split. And in the most surprising move of her career, Cardi B — who has shared everything with the public — is saying her next relationship stays completely private. John breaks down what really happened, what the Bronx energy says about how she's handling it, and the full-circle irony that they went public at a Knicks game. TAY KEITH IS GONE AT 29 — The Grammy-nominated Memphis producer behind Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode," Drake's "Nonstop," and Sexyy Red's entire breakout album was found unresponsive in his Nashville apartment on June 18th. Cause of death pending. John pays tribute to a genius who built a body of work most producers never touch in a lifetime — before his 30th birthday. THE NEW YORK KNICKS ARE NBA CHAMPIONS — 53 years. John Cash was in Midtown Manhattan the night Game 5 ended and he's telling you exactly what that felt like. Plus: Jalen Brunson's 45-point masterpiece, the two-million-person Canyon of Heroes parade, Alicia Keys closing the ceremony with "Empire State of Mind," and the viral story of an executive director at JPMorgan Chase who lost her job after stealing a commemorative Knicks trash can, riding the subway home with it, and smiling the whole way. The receipts are verified. The takes are real. The city is in its bag. This episode covers: — Clive Davis death & Whitney Houston legacy — Black community reaction to Clive Davis — Cardi B & Stefon Diggs breakup — Tay Keith death at 29 — New York Knicks 2026 NBA Championship — Jalen Brunson Finals MVP — Knicks Championship Parade — Canyon of Heroes — JPMorgan Chase executive fired after Knicks trash can incident. Through PIN–UP, the German-born, New York–based editor, curator, and founder Felix Burrichter continues to expand the possibilities of what an architecture magazine can be. He constructs intuitive bridges between creative sectors—whether art, design, and music, or fashion, film, and food—and shows how the built environment shapes and responds to larger societal and cultural forces. Amid endlessly scrollable, algorithmically controlled digital feeds, PIN–UP remains committed as ever to a print-forward, human-led approach. 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of this self-described “magazine for architectural entertainment” and the launch of its 40th issue, a special edition devoted to the notion of “Independence”—a north star for Burrichter, who has long championed slower, more intentional forms of media rooted in curiosity, discovery, and pleasure. On the episode, Burrichter reflects on why he sees magazines as intimate dinner parties; how slowness and experimentation have become his publication's defining strengths; and why, despite our precarious present, he continues to strive toward utopia.
