Burnout may be common for freelancers and small business owners, but you don't have to live with it. If you've listened to TWC episodes before, you know that Wudan and Jenni believe that time off, and the introspection required to combat burnout-related patterns, are key to running a sustainable business. And that's what Jenni is chatting about on this episode Katie Navarra, a freelance writer from Upstate NY. Katie started her career exclusively as an equine journalist and expanded into agriculture, education and leadership. Today she is transitioning to content marketing and life coaching. During this coaching session, it became pretty obvious that Katie was feeling apathetic about her work. She's found great success in equine journalism but now she's excited about something else. We loved two things about this conversation: First, Katie was able to identify the opposite of burnout for her -- which was the feeling of being in the ring with her horse. It was a feeling of freedom, and we talked about how to harness that (no pun intended) in future months. Second, we love that Katie and Jenni landed on time off as a good solution. Let's be clear: time off isn't the only way to cure burnout, nor is it possible for everyone. Usually, burnout is indicative of a systemic issue (sometimes within your control, and sometimes due to factors outside of your control). So even if you take time off, you'll come back into a situation that will cause that exact same problem all over again. BUT, Katie wanted to take time off -- like, two whole months off! -- to rehash her business plan and figure out what she wants next. Her goal is to come back to an entirely different situation, and she needs time away to figure out how to get herself into what is essentially an entirely new career. When Katie and Jenni caught up a few weeks ago (we recorded this episode at the beginning of the summer of 2021), Katie shared that she's designated not two, but three whole months off this winter. Who says freelancers can't step away from their work? With strategic planning, anything is possible. You can download resources for this episode in our banish burnout booster pack which contains journal prompts, a worksheet on signals of burnout, an ideal client mad libs page, and a business audit.
This Bachelorette recap features real-life dating advice taken from the most recent episodes of the show. Marni and Man Panelist Chris Gillis talk about the trainwreck finale that includes angry family members, Katie and Blake getting engaged and some of the worst hosting in TV history. Key takeaways from this episode: How to step back from an argument Why it is wrong to label someone Vulnerability or oversharing? Take responsibility for your half of a relationship Are You Ready to Date Again? [1:55] One thing for sure is you must be emotionally free of past relationships before you are ready to date again. Marni points out that Katie did not have time to get past her relationship with Greg Grippo before getting engaged to Blake Moynes. Chris thinks Greg was treated unfairly. During the episode, the audience meets Katie's mom and her aunt Lindsey, who was very angry and disconnected. Marni says it explains why Katie can go from being fun and playful to stone-cold quickly. Marni hypothesized that there may be a lot of secrets in the family based on their actions and remembers back to a past episode when Katie finds out that her father was not her biological father. Katie looked belittled by her family. Oversharing is Not Vulnerability [24:03] When Katie and Blake performed the burning ceremony, Katie opened up about her insecurities and her need for safety. Later, Blake said it was too much pressure and it scared him to have that responsibility on his shoulders. Marni points out that Katie shouldn't put her emotional safety in the hands of another person. It's hard to believe Blake is Katie's soul mate after seeing the breakup with Greg and all in such a short time. Katie Should Apologize to Greg [36:48] Greg accused Katie of wanting to play the part of the Bachelorette and he may have been right even though he is an actor. Marni is a big fan of Greg and how he maintained a mature stance during the finale. He seems to be a genuine guy who had genuine feelings for Katie. If someone rails on you, don't go back so they can do it again. In real-life dating, if you get into a heated argument ask the other person for a break. It is better to pause and excuse yourself until things calm down than to say something you don't mean. Agree on a time to reconvene and start over. And, Marni believes Katie should apologize to Greg. As it was inappropriate to put a psychological label (Gaslighter) on Greg just because she was pissed off. In the end, everyone just wants love. In the corporate world, Katie McDonald was trapped in an endless, unwinnable race. She was selling advertising to huge corporations and in 45 national publications, but she was selling her soul in the process. She wasn't sleeping. She stayed up all night thinking about the next sale, what she could do differently, all the ways she was failing, and why nothing would ever be enough. The more she pushed, the more her body acted up–and eventually, she couldn't pretend anymore. When Katie left corporate life, she found herself in the depths of overwhelm, depression, and illness. In her healing, she created the b.nourished program–an executive wellness program designed to foster mindfulness, peace of mind, and productivity influenced by her personal recovery and decades of research. She now helps entrepreneurs and executives get things done without coming undone. She has won the Top 50 Inno on Fire Award, and has spoken for many clients including Facebook, Swarovski, CVS Health, and United Way, among many others. In this episode, Arwen and Katie talk about why so many people view self-care as time that should be spent getting things done, how that was once true for both of them and how self-care really is the key to personal and professional success. When Katie hit bottom and entered recovery, she was in self-pity and feeling pretty broken. Luckily, the program and the fellowship became a place where everyone wanted her to succeed. Katie says that the people in AA loved her until she could love herself.THE FALSE COMFORT OF SELF-PITYSelf-pity is one of the most unhappy and consuming defects that we know. It is a bar to all spiritual progress and can cut off all effective communication with our fellows because of its inordinate demands for attention and sympathy. It is a maudlin form of martyrdom, which we can ill afford.AS BILL SEES IT, p. 238The false comfort of self-pity screens me from reality only momentarily and then demands, like a drug, that I take an ever bigger dose. If I succumb to this it could lead to a relapse into drinking. What can I do? One certain antidote is to turn my attention, however slightly at first, toward others who are genuinely less fortunate than I, preferably other alcoholics. In the same degree that I actively demonstrate my empathy with them, I will lessen my own exaggerated suffering. If you're struggling with alcohol or addiction, or wondering how to stop drinking it's helpful to know that there's a solution that has worked for millions of people. Even if it takes thirty years, like it did for Katie, or one hundred eight (like it did for the Chicago Cubs to win the World Series), dreams really can come true. It starts with finding a way to do what you love. Dreams often fade over time, losing the brilliance of their original inspiration. We've all experienced it, even rationalized it. Circumstances change, nudging you to give up. You age, take on family responsibilities, face health concerns, lose loved ones before their time. As a result, dreams get written off. But maybe they don't have to be. Maybe there's a way of reimagining them. When Katie's mom died, she thought their shared dream of visiting all thirty Major League Baseball ballparks died too. Six years later, she took a journey of a lifetime, proving our thirty-year-old dream was still alive. Baseball reminds us that we can fail often and still be a Hall of Famer. One bad game doesn't determine our identity, and one losing season doesn't define our career. We need to know that in challenging moments, the potential for redemption remains. After all, baseball is the game of perpetual chances. Katie hopes her story sends the message that while you might be down now, it's never too late to stage a rally or a comeback. Trust that every wrong turn, every challenging moment is leading you to exactly where you need to be. I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!: Leave a comment and let me know what stood out from Katie's story! Max described himself on Bumble as a “6’3″ 235lb barrel-chested freedom fighter. Love my dog, love to laugh.” When Katie met Max in the summer of 2018, he seemed like the perfect catch….but there was one small detail – he was still married (going through a divorce), had three kids with three different women and INSISTED to ‘let the past be the past.’ But, after a couple months, things seemed a little off and what she found out after doing a reverse photo search was that he had a pregnant wife back home in Louisiana! After 10 years together, Lexy (now pregnant with his child) receives a message and photos on Facebook from a women that says “here’s your husband back. Didn’t know you were pregnant.” What ensues is a wild ride of pain pill addiction and alcohol issues, lying, cheating, ‘finding God’ and suicide threats.Have you experienced, or are currently experiencing, a Ben in your life? Luke from Arlington has asked us for help with his wife Katie who he overheard telling a friend she had "settled" for him. He says he didn't mean to eavesdrop when Katie was talking to her BFF about the friend's man trouble but he heard Katie say "you shouldn't settle like I did." He says it was like a gut punch after all these years and he is not sure how to get past it, or whether he even wants to. When Katie comes on she says Luke is blowing this way out of proportion. He says the conversation was different than what he heard, and yeah she may have misspoken and used the word "settled" while consoling her friend, but she loves Luke and she wouldn't still be with him after all these years if she didn't. She says Luke is hypersensitive and reacts to things like this all the time and she sounds a bit tired of it. In fact they both sound tired. Luckily for them, we have the full force of you - the P1's - to help try and save this marriage.

If you've been on Facebook or Instagram at all in the last few years, you've undoubtedly come across an online quiz. Who doesn't want to know which Disney princess they are?!? But have you ever considered creating your own quiz in order to generate leads for your wedding business? In this week's episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're chatting with a wedding photographer who is doing just that and successfully bringing in leads every single day using online quizzes targeted at her ideal client. About our guest: With over 6 years of experience photographing intimate weddings, Katie Doherty has traveled from upstate New York to Bali to Tuscany to document unique love stories. Run Away Together, an elopement photography studio based in Los Angeles, emerged from Katie's desire to work with unconventional, romantic couples who are up for an adventure. Katie adores photographing elopements because they are often a no fuss, no muss approach to getting married. Couples have described her images as nostalgic, poetic, and cinematic. Katie is also the host of the Run Away Together podcast, a resource for couples who are considering an elopement. On the show, she is able to share her love for travel and inspiring places around the world to elope. She enjoys researching stunning, unique ceremony locations and assists couples in finding the best places to stay, dining options, and things to do for fun in any given city. This eases the couples' stress and simplifies planning. When Katie is not photographing weddings, she loves documenting her travels. She's constantly on the lookout for landscape and nature scenes to create fine art prints, and has partnered with the likes of Samsung and Urban Outfitters. Lastly, Katie is the co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of La Rousse Shoppe, which sells glass photo boxes and other elegant packaging products to photographers. Her mission is simple: creating beauty for others to enjoy. In this episode, listeners will hear about: Katie's experience in the wedding industry How Katie came up with the idea to create quizzes as a lead generation tool Quiz ideas for wedding industry businesses Starting from the end of the process (the quiz results) and working backwards to create the questions The software Katie uses to create the quiz - Outgrow quiz maker How Katie has used Pinterest ads to promote the quiz The number of daily leads Katie is now getting through online quizzes Katie's previous podcast episode with This Week In Weddings, "Making Money While You Sleep" Copywriter Kayley Vandenberg Want to connect with Katie? Influence is an art, and beginning speakers and influencers know that it isn't easy to make an impact on people. Can you fathom influencing millions? In today's episode, let's talk about how I am able to reach out to a great number of people. It's tried and tested, and within two years, you're bound to come across great results. Join me in today's episode as I share with you my 2-year plan to influence millions. Check it out! How do you influence millions of people? Can you make real, meaningful, profound change in millions of lives all around the world? I’m so excited to share this with you because you can! Once you get all the tools you need, show up in front of people, and have them listen to you, they’ll start seeing you as their hero! Everything you know and everything you’ve been through can make a significant impact on people from all walks of life. There’s nothing more fulfilling than someone coming up to you and saying, “Hey, what you said really made a difference in my life. I’m all the better for it! My relationships with God, my family, and my friends have really changed in a great way. I can’t thank you enough.” Trust me - there’s nothing sweeter to the ear and to the heart than those words! How do I know this? I’ve personally influenced over 40 million people, and I’ve done this through YouTube views and subscriptions. I’ve also helped other people make their mark and have people listen to what they have to say. I did this by coming up with a formula that will give you a platform for influencing millions of people. In just two years, you’ll be impacting millions of people with this plan. I’m not talking about getting people to view cute cat videos or funny viral content. This isn’t paid or entertainment traffic; this is real and life-changing influence! Just to give you an idea of how important what I’m going to share with you is, clients actually pay me $208,000 for me to do this for them for two years, so they can get them millions of views and reach greater influence. But today I’m going to share this with you just because I know there are some of you who have that resounding call inside you to do greater things and share your voice with the world! The Moana voice Before we get into that formula, I want you to know why I started doing this in the first place. Now if I were to make you guess what my favorite movie is, a Disney film about a Hawaiian princess might be the farthest from your mind. But Moana is actually my favorite movie just because her story really relates to and resonates with me! Moana had responsibilities and a community to take care of, but she had this voice inside her calling her out to the sea. So she takes the leap, goes on that adventure, and ends up helping her people! For me, that inner voice has always been the call to entrepreneurship. There were definitely times when it didn’t make sense to anyone else, even to myself. I’d experienced financial hardship to the point where I had to ask my mom for money, and she asked me, “Nate, why don’t you just get a job?” Even when those moments of doubt and fear came, this persistent voice kept calling me towards my passion. So if you have that inner voice, that drive that just won’t go away no matter how much you try to stifle or ignore it, then you know you’re meant to influence lives in a big way - maybe even beyond what you ever dreamed of! What is influence? How exactly do I define influence? How can you say you’ve influenced someone? Well, it just means changing someone’s life in a meaningful way. Let’s say you gave someone advice that was helpful to them or had an impact on their life. That’s someone you’ve successfully influenced! See, you don’t have to be a superhero saving someone from a burning building or even a big star with famous parents to be an influencer. When I talk about influence, I’m talking about your expertise and your life experiences. You might have the answers to questions people are asking all around the world on Google and YouTube. What’s the catch? You’re not in the right direction that gives you the platform to answer their questions. To get started on this path, the first step is to find out why you want to give the right answers, influence people, and change millions of lives. Answering the why’s You can’t get into the commitment of a two-year plan without knowing why you’re doing it. I’ll be the first to answer that question. So why am I so passionate about influencing people? I’m going to go deep and get down to the heart of what I’m doing. It might rub some of you the wrong way, but this is important to me, my life, and my business principles. I believe that the purpose of life is to become like God. I believe I am a son of God, and we are all children of God. So with that in mind, our goal is to become like God. God is the master of influence. Jesus Christ is a master of influence. He uses influence perfectly. We want to follow Him and go with His example. We may not be perfect, but our goal is to do the best we can and become more and more like God. Now you may have different reasons, but here’s what you need to remember: When people listen to what you have to say, follow your advice, and buy things from you, it means you’re starting to have influence on their lives. And with influence comes power. Remember that great quote from Spiderman? Uncle Ben shares his wisdom with Peter Parker and says, “With great power comes great responsibility.” I love this quote, simply because it speaks the truth. Influence brings power, which brings great responsibility. We have to use our influence for good. See, many people get it wrong. They think the pursuit of influence is about pride or lifting ourselves up. But what’s really about is changing the lives of those around us for the better. You need to have total, absolute clarity and confidence why you want to influence millions. If somebody asks you, “Why are you doing this?” you can answer them and talk about your purpose without hesitation. If you’re not sure about this yet, take time to think about it and go back to reading this once you’re 100% clear on it. Commitment and consistency If you already know your “why”, then the next step is to commit and be consistent. Think about how important this is to you. On a scale of 1-10, how committed are you to this? Are you really willing to do what it takes? How far are you willing to go? Are you ready to make sacrifices? What if my formula for influence requires you to get out of your comfort zone? Influence requires us to do things we might not want to do, but we need to do. For others, it’s getting on camera, and for some, it’s losing their anonymity. But how willing you are to do things that are uncomfortable or even scary is crucial to how effective you’re going to be at influencing millions. This influence strategy is a 2-year plan, which means you have to give me two years of commitment with your whole heart in it! The rough part is keeping it up. Week after week, you gotta put in the work - no matter what happens. Consistency is your #1 tool here, and not skipping a beat with it for 2 years. I’ve been teaching these principles for 7 years, and I also created a done-for-you service for those who weren’t implementing it all the way. My team took care of content, strategy, editing, launching, thumbnails, and they got great results. Every person I’ve helped, who went through those 2 years, is now influencing millions. These results I got drew in more and more people, and now they’re really listening to it. The message hasn’t changed, but the difference is, they’re now willing to take me up on the challenge! It’s all up to you Now you have to make a huge decision. “Am I going to trust Nate? Am I gonna follow his instructions? Is this the path I want to take?” I’m telling you right now: this is the path towards influencing millions. The question is, are you ready to go on this adventure? All I’m going to ask from you is to dedicate about 4 hours per week. Think about the commitment you made to college, to your job, or maybe to some other kind of training. In comparison, this seems a lot easier and more doable! You just need to be patient and committed, with your head in the game no matter what. If you’re going to do your own editing, you might need to add 10 more hours. But what you can do is hire a virtual assistant for 400-450 bucks per month. Just search virtualassistanttool.com and you can look for the right person who can do the editing for you. I talk a lot more about that on my videos and podcast episodes, so check it out if you want to learn more about hiring virtual assistants. I have 16 full-time employees and I found them all there! Mapping out the 2-year plan This is really exciting, so let’s get into it. The first thing you need to know is where your views and traffic will come from on YouTube. The first is search traffic. This is when people on YouTube find you by hitting up keywords or phrases on the search engine. The second is suggested traffic. Later on, once you really get your views up slowly but surely, your views will transition from search traffic to suggested traffic. Search traffic is really small, but suggested traffic is awesome! It means you’ve impressed the YouTube algorithm enough that it suggests your videos to other people who are watching content similar to yours. It’s also what gets you ranking higher and higher, with more and more views. Here’s a warning: it won’t happen in a flash. There’s some boring stuff you really need to get through and be really patient with. For the first four months, the results will be initially boring. You might get 40 views on one video, then 50 on another, then back down to 40. That number gradually increases. But once you get to that 4-month mark, that’s where it really gets the thrill and adrenaline really come in. Around that time you’ll have what’s called a spike. This means you’ll get thousands of views in a single day. Then in a few more weeks, you’ll have another spike with even more views. This is how your momentum will keep building and building! Every spike will dwarf your previous spike and hike up your baseline for views, so you’ll keep achieving more and more traffic. I’ve had clients that had their spike on the 4-month mark to the exact day. There was one who had it a week early, and another who had it 5 days late. I can’t control this, but the timeline stays pretty much the same every time. The formula: 4 ingredients you need I figured this all out by studying and understanding the algorithm for YouTube and Google. When I did, I found out that the 4-month spike and consistent growth from there happen when you have 4 ingredients. So I came up with this formula and it’s worked literally every single time! As long as you have all 4 ingredients, success is already in the bag. I share these ingredients in different orders, and Ingredient #4, in particular, is really important. do it exactly the way I explain. You can’t do it at 50 or even 80% - it won’t work! Trust me on this. I’ve been doing this for a long time and for many, many different people. Now, this is really important: take several notes and don’t miss a single thing from here all the way to the end of the article so you’ll know how to use each ingredient correctly and successfully! 1) The perfect video length The first one is that all your videos - every single one of them - need to be between 10 and 12 minutes in length. Now, some of you might think that’s too long, while some of you might think that’s really short. But it’s the perfect amount of time just because it performs so well on YouTube. People are used to content at that length and actually are on YouTube to watch longer videos. Unlike your Facebook or Instagram crowd, people on YouTube want to watch quality content that’s long and detailed. Plus, the YouTube algorithm loves longer watch time. They usually show ads every 10 minutes, so when your video is that long, they can show more ads around your content. “Short and sweet” just isn’t what YouTube is about. The belief that we need to keep our videos short (at 1 or 2 minutes max) doesn’t apply to quality content videos - it applies to ads. With ads, people are being [pitched to or sold to, so you gotta keep the energy up and keep people on their toes and watch for just a couple minutes. What we’re talking about how-to videos. Keep reading because I’ll go into more detail about that because it’s part of our formula. But the point is, for this type of video people really expect to be watching for 10-12 minutes. 2) Average view duration of 45% or higher This is actually your retention rate, which means people aren’t just clicking on your video and moving on to the next. You need to keep people watching your videos all the way to the end. For example, if your viewers are just watching 30-60 seconds of your video for instance, then there’s something missing. And here’s where most people go wrong. Let me give you an example to give you a little more clarity on this. Years ago, I filmed with Doreen Spackman and she told me she had a sore throat remedy. So we did some keyword research and we found the title, “How To Get Rid Of Strep Throat Without Antibiotics.” Now I know this remedy works wonders for strep throat and coughs because I personally applied it. But it’s not enough that I know it works, I have to show people how to make it and keep them curious enough to watch a full 10-minute video. So I’m gonna demonstrate how to make sure you get an average view duration of 45% or better yet, keep people watching to the end. First, I’ll show you how not to do it. Here’s a sample of where it might go wrong:“Okay, so let’s dive right into how to cure strep throat without antibiotics. The first ingredient is raw garlic, the second ingredient is raw honey, and the third ingredient is cayenne pepper. Just mix those three together! It kinda tastes yucky, but you swallow it and that will get rid of your strep throat. It really works, so you gotta go try it!” What’s the problem with this? That really is the remedy that people are looking for, but it’s not gonna make them stick around. The thing is, I just shared the secret and gave away everything right at the beginning. My viewers won’t have any reason to keep watching. Now if there’s a wrong way, there’s a right way and I’ll demonstrate the right way. “Okay so let’s dive right into how to cure strep throat without antibiotics. I’m gonna start out by talking about why you shouldn’t antibiotics and there’s some good reasons that we’ll discuss. Then I’m gonna share three ingredients with you and explain with each one why it’s a natural antibiotic and a natural antiviral. We’ll talk about why this is so good for our bodies to take in and why it can get rid of strep throat effectively. So I’m gonna go through these three ingredients - you probably have these in your kitchen! - and I’ll explain how each of them work. Then we’re gonna go into my kitchen and I’ll show you how to mix them and how often you should take it. I’ll also share with you a story about when my son got really sick and had strep throat and high fever, and how this remedy really helped him. You’re gonna wanna hear this!”So what I did differently there was I set “content hooks”, This is what keeps your audience interested. It lets them know what I’m gonna start with, what’s coming next, what’s going to happen in the middle of the video, and what happens at the end. You give them a basic idea of what they’re in for, but you also keep them intrigued enough to stick around for the full 10 minutes. I’ll give you another tip so you can really go back and figure out what makes your viewers wanna stick around: You can see your average view duration in the YouTube analytics. YouTube gives you a lot of data to review, so you can go behind the scenes and figure out where you went wrong on one video and what you did right in another. This way, you can keep improving your content to make your channel better and better! 3) Five episodes per week This sounds like a lot - well, because it is! Don’t be scared. Remember, you can do this in the four hours per week we talked about earlier. Technically, you’ve got to do all these 13 times in a year. What I do for both my content and my clients is I film 20 episodes in one day, from start to finish. We start filming at 9 am all the way until 5 pm with just a lunch break in between. That’s already enough time to film 20 episodes with about 10-12 minutes each, and I only have to do that once every 4 weeks! Now, let’s break this down. You’ve got an 8-hour filming day, then several days prior you took another 8 hours to prepare all your content and outline all your talking points. So that’s 16 hours in total, and you have to do that once every 4 weeks. That comes down to 4 hours per week. Here’s the big picture so you can understand the magnitude of what we’re creating here: in 2 years doing 5 episodes per week, you’ll add up to about 520 episodes! Let that sink in. Yeah, we’re talking about a lot of work. We’re going to impact millions and millions of lives - not hundreds, not even thousands - we’re talking 500,000 lives per month two years from now! 4) Leaf strategy You’ve really got to pay attention to this because this is a critical one. If you’re missing this, the whole formula just won’t work. Now what you need to do is start on keyword research before filming. What do I mean by this, and how do you do it? I’ve come up with a pretty cool analogy for this, so stick with me here.Visualize a tree. A tree has a really broad trunk that goes out into branches, into limbs, and then leaves at the very end. The trunk represents your broad area of expertise. The branches represent all the different categories of expertise you have. The leaves represent the specific questions that people are asking all over the world. See, while a branch or a limb might represent vague or general questions, the leaves are very, very specific questions. Here are some examples to help you better understand this. Let’s say you’re an expert on goal-setting and you want to be established as on Youtube as the master or go-to guy for this field. What you don’t want to do is make videos called “My Best Goal-Setting Tips” or “How To Get Really Good At Goal-Setting.” Now you might be asking, “Why not? That’s my expertise, isn’t it?” But your objective here isn’t to make a catchy title that might appear in a magazine or a blog. What you need to do is find long questions that have consistent search volume. This simply means specific questions that people usually search for on Google or on YouTube. One of them is “How To Set Exercise Goals On An Apple Watch”. Talk about specific! It’s a long title, but it grabs your audience’s attention because it zeroes in on a topic and gets straight to the point. There’s also enough room for other talking points (for instance, you can talk about how important exercise and health is and motivate people to get fit with a few simple steps) so you fill up those 10-12 minutes with quality content. There’s also “How To Make A Vision Board That Really Works” and “How To Set Financial Goals For A Business”. Again, they’re really long, but that’s the point! I didn’t make up these phrases or find them randomly. What I do is look for topics or questions with a consistent search volume of at least 10 per month. We don’t want too high of a search volume, because then you’ll have a lot of competition and get drowned out. The goal is for your video to rank on YouTube - on your very first day. So you post the video and within that day, your video will rank at the top when people search for the question your video answers. This is why you don’t want to do videos on topics that get more than 100 searches per month. You won’t rank and you won’t get the views your channel needs for better exposure. I’ll share with you a few more examples from actual channels I’ve helped to give you a better idea of what phrases get you ranking higher. My friend Kris Krohn, who’s an expert in real estate investments, has videos on “How To Buy A Multi-Family Property With No Money”, “How To Make A Million Dollars In Five Years”, and “How To Achieve Financial Freedom Quickly.” Here are a few from Dr. Paul Jenkins, who’s a Positivity Psychologist: “How To Stop Siblings From Fighting All The Time”, “How To Get Kids To Listen Without Yelling”, “How To Get Someone To Open Up To You”, and “How To Motivate A Lazy Teenager.” These are all great “leaf” questions that got them ranking higher on YouTube! How to find your leaves Now, how exactly do you find these questions? How do you find out what kind of search volume each phrase has? The answer is simple, and you’ll want to write it down. I use a really cool and effective keyword research website called semrush.com. They’ve been around for at least a decade now, but last year I discovered a brand new tool that they have that’s a game-changer. It totally sped up the process and simplified everything I was doing to use my strategy - it’s really amazing. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by keyword research or SEO, but all you need to do is visualize the tree and remember to focus on the leaves instead of the branches or the trunk. So semrush.com has something called “Keyword Magic Tool”. Let’s go with an example so you can see how it works. My friend, Katie Gutierrez, is an interior designer in Miami. One of her branches is living room design. So if you go into Keyword Magic Tool and hit search on living room design, you’ll see a list of phrases that are commonly searched by people all over the world. There’s another magic button on the screen that lets you choose between all results or just questions. Go ahead and choose “just questions”. That’s where the magic comes from this tool - it gives you tons and tons of questions, so on a single branch, you’ll have hundreds of leaves. So it gives you all these search phrases and you want to go for something that has low search volume. That means only 10-70 people are searching for it every month. You might be thinking, “Well, if more people are searching for a topic, shouldn’t I do a video on that?” But the catch here is that you’ll have so much more competition with that topic and you’re more likely to get drowned out. So it’s better to be more specific! I’ve listed down 20 titles from my Living Room Design search: “How To Design A Small Living Room”“How To Design A Living Room/Dining Room Combo” “How To Design A Living Room With High Ceilings”“How To Design Living Room Furniture”“How To Design MY Living Room Online”“How To Design A Living Room With A TV”“How To Design A Living Room With Large Windows”“How To Design Lighting For Living Room”“How To Design A Living Room With Fall Ceilings”“How To Design A Living Room With Sectionals”“How To Design A Living Room With Fireplace And TV”“How To Design A Kitchen/Living Room Combo”“How To Design A Living Room On A Budget”“How To Design A Living Room With Corner Fireplace” “How To Design A Living Room Without A TV”“How To Design A Living Room With Long Narrow Living Room”“How To Design A Small Kitchen/Living Room Combo”“How To Design A Living Room With Recessed Lighting“How To Design A Living Room In 3D”Now why did I spend all that time listing off all these titles? Look at the list - from that, you already make 20 different episodes! This makes it easier for you to get closer and closer to our goal of 520 episodes. When Katie and I were first talking and sharing our ideas, she had enough expert content that she could talk about so many different aspects of living room design. This means any time someone would type “How With Corner Fireplace”, her video would pop up immediately. Plus, they’re more likely to watch all the way to the end because it’s exactly what they’re searching for. That’s why we want to go specific. Remember: we want topics with low search volume and ultra-specific topics. When you have really specific videos, you don’t have to skip over things so you can move on to the next topic. You can really go to the gold and dig in. This way, you’re not just churning out video after video; you can give the highest value possible and do it in 10 minutes. Remember, once you start making your leaf videos and launching 5 episodes per week, you’ll start getting a handful of views that will grab the YouTube algorithm’s attention. Once you start getting that trickle, it builds and builds with gradual momentum until you hit that 4-month mark and get that spike: that’s when it gets really fun. Bonus strategy: doing sequels I have just one last tip for you to really get going on those views, and to explain it I’ll share a little story with you. So I mentioned my friend Kris Krohn above. We started his channel five years ago and for the first two and a half years, we only launched one episode per week. The channel grew, so later on, we were ready to take it up a notch and increase to 5 episodes per week. When we made that decision, we had 12,000 subscribers. Exactly 4 months later to the day, we had grown to 16,000 subscribers then we had our first spike. That spike pulled our channel up from 16,000 to 65,000 in just two months! It’s really exciting when that happens for your channel. Now what I do - which you can also do for your videos - is I go to YouTube Analytics and figure out what videos were mainly responsible for the spike. For Kris, one of the videos we found was “How To Invest In Your 20s” with about 60,000 views. I went on Analytics and found out that traffic was coming from suggested. I mentioned before that this means YouTube was suggesting it alongside other videos that people were watching. It meant YouTube was promoting the video for us. The video itself was actually short; it was just around 2 minutes long. So I thought, “Hmm, this video is really proving itself. How about we make a longer version of it?” The first version had Kris sitting there on his pool table teaching the whole time. What we did in the second version was have him pull up in his car, walk into his house and into a room, and that’s when he started teaching. He also went to his kitchen, drew on a flip chart, then went back upstairs into his office. This video ended up being 20 minutes long, it was a lot more dynamic and engaging. You don’t really have to do this when you’re in the rough beginning stages, doing 5 episodes per week. But when you get that spike, go into your analytics and look at the videos that are getting suggested traffic. Then create a sequel for that! It doesn’t have to be labelled Part 2 or anything like that. Just name it the same exact thing with a better thumbnail and longer duration. Now at the time when I did this for Kris, we had 80,000 subscribers. In five weeks, we grew to a whopping 160,000 subscribers! Sounds crazy, but it worked for him and it’s worked for every client I’ve ever had. Here’s the takeaway: start with the 4 ingredients. Build momentum. Commit to making 520 episodes. Once you get a spike, take advantage of the YouTube analytics and find opportunities to create sequels. Have more and more spikes. Before you know it, in 2 years, you’ll have millions of views and you’ll be changing so many lives. Thanks for sticking with me to the end. This means you really are committed and passionate about influencing millions! Now that you know the 4 ingredients you need to get started on making a huge impact on the world, are you ready to take the leap? The ball is in your court; now let’s get to work! On today's episode of Survivor Sanctuary, I'm chatting with survivor and advocate Katie Trout who shares her story of experiencing abuse at the hands of a megachurch staff member. When Katie bravely came forward about the abuse, her lifelong home church had an opportunity to love and support her through her recovery as the hands and feet of Jesus. Did they seize that opportunity? Find out in part one of my interview with Katie. ... The consequences of not doing so can be brutal Guest profile Denis and Katie O’Brien decided to create a “Chain of Wealth” after having a tough conversation about Katie’s debt that was piling up. She had more than US$200,000 of debt that included student loans, a mortgage, a car loan, and negative equity. After hunkering down and reprioritizing what is important in life, they’ve managed to pay off all their debt in less than two years, all while getting married and paying for their wedding in cash! “We often speak about the ostrich technique in terms of payment where you stick your head in the ground and you pretend it’s not there. Don’t do that.” Denis O’Brien Worst investment ever Denis and Katie O’Brien met at a time when Katie was over her head with debt. Before they met, her way of dealing with the lingering debt was to bury her head in the sand and hope that someday it would all go away. Her anxiety over her piling debt was so much that she wouldn’t bring herself to check the mailbox. But the debts didn’t magically disappear. They followed her when she moved in with Denis in Washington DC. When the stack of bills came knocking in the mail one day, Denis decided that she was done burying her head in the sand and that it was time to deal with the debts head-on. Flashback to when all the mess started It was back in March 2015 or 2014 when she was dating a “smooth-talking dude”. It so happened that he needed a car but he had bad credit and therefore, needed someone to co-sign the car loan for him. After a couple of conversations, the smooth talker managed to convince Katie that if she cosigned a loan for him it would lower his interest rate allowing him to save money for other important things. He promised that this would not affect her in any way and he’d make every single payment. The ironic thing is that at the time Katie was driving an old 2002 Toyota Corolla, with all sorts of mechanical issues. She could have done with a new car! But here she was helping someone else to get themselves a new car she could barely afford. From zero car loan to negative equity Finally, she went to the car dealership with him and he picked out a pretty good car. Not a high-end car but still quite good and expensive, well at least for her. After the purchase, he told her that he had negative equity. She didn’t know much about negative equity finance. She knew that it wasn’t something good for your credit but she didn’t quite understand what the consequences were. What she didn’t understand was that after cosigning his car loan she had also inherited his negative equity loan. At this point, Katie had no car loan. She was a 26-year-old graduate, working a normal teaching job and living on her own. As expected, the relationship quickly came tumbling down as soon after the car purchase. As if that was not enough, the dude defaulted on the car payments. It now became clear that Katie had bitten more than she could chew. After chasing him all over trying to get him to make payments Katie finally went to a lawyer as she didn’t know what to do because the car loan was attached to her credit. The lawyer told her she had two options. She could either make him pay for the car or take it and deal with the mess on her own. She came home one night, she was living with her mom at the time, and in front of her house, there sat the car. He told her she could keep the car, it was in her name anyway. Bearing the weight of someone else’s negative equity So now here she had a car that she did not need nor could afford. On top of that, she had to pay off her ex’s negative equity debt of $20,000! This was a lot of money to pay off with a teacher’s salary. To say that she was distressed is an understatement. Other than having to pay off the car loan and equity, she still had to get his name off the title for fear that he could one day come and take the car back after she’d paid off the loan. A helping hand from her family She finally shared her woes with her mom and brother and they both did their best to help her dig herself out of her worst investment ever. Her mom went with her to a dealership to see how to make things better. Feeling like a bozo, she explained to the dealership manager what had happened. Going in, she thought she’d pick out a cheaper car, get his name off of it, and boom, she’s done and life can move on. Boy wasn’t she wrong! The manager told her that she couldn’t get a cheaper car because she had so much negative equity that she needed a car that would be able to cover a loan equivalent to the cost of the car. So now she was looking at $60,000 cars. The lowdown on negative equity on a car The reason why the dealership wouldn’t give Katie a loan was because she had no collateral. So it was high risk for them to give her a cheaper car but with an expensive car, if she defaulted, they’d have more to claim. Katie was now so frustrated that she didn’t even window shop for a car. She just went and pointed at the first car she saw sitting right on the showroom floor, a blue Honda Crosstour. She didn’t test drive it, she just signed the paperwork and left with a car she’d have to pay $663 a month for seven years. That amount was exclusive of insurance and everything else. Remember, she’s a teacher! While she had managed to get her ex’s name off the car by trading it off with a more expensive car, she also inherited all the debt to go with it. She had never envisioned her first car purchasing experience would turn out like that. Getting out of debt for good About a year and a half after buying the car Katie moved in with Denis and when the stack of bills came in the mail, Denis told her that it was time to get out of that mess for good. He told her that their relationship could not move forward until she got the debts in control. Either she would commit to pay off her debts or forget the ring. However, he was going to offer her all the support she needed to do it. Getting the debt-free plan together Denis, a chartered accountant by trade, got straight to work. He created an Excel spreadsheet and calculated everything. The total amount of debt Katie owed at this point was $200,000 worth of debt. Katie got so emotional and felt trapped. She simply couldn’t see how it would be possible to get herself out of so much debt. She had quit her job to move in with Denis in a new city. So how was she going to pay off that much money while jobless? After she calmed down, they took the Excel spreadsheet and devised an action plan. Denis committed to covering their basic living expenses and Katie committed to paying off her debt by the time she was celebrating her birthday that year. Selling off her assets To make it possible to pay off her debts Katie had to confront the possibility of selling off her assets. It was an emotional process but it had to be done. She had earlier bought a house for $100,000. Luckily, the house had appreciated and its value was now about $120,000. She was able to sell that for quite a bit of a profit. She put the $19,000 from the sale towards her car loan. Next to go was the car. It was now worth about $20,000. She tried selling it privately on Craigslist, and other car sale websites without any luck. One day, right before Thanksgiving 2017, she got fed up and decided the car had to be gone by Christmas. She took it to a random dealership and after inspecting the car, they offered to buy it for whatever amount she wanted. So she sold it off for $18,000. The sale was so easy compared to the turmoil she had gone through when buying it that she was a bit disappointed. She expected it to be harder. Getting down to zero debt After selling her house and car, Katie still had a ton of debt to pay off. She still owed about $50,000 in student loans and a small medical bill. They decided to pay off the medical bill first and then figure out how to pay the student loan. When Katie graduated, she had about $33,000 in student-loan debt but she deferred her payments. So when she started paying it back, she owed about $45,000. So it helps to start paying off student loans as soon as possible. They did more mathematics to see where they were with the debt and how much Katie needed to be debt-free by her birthday. It turns out she had to make payments averaging about $3100 a month towards her debt. Once again, she was in tears because as a teacher she was making about $2200 a month so she had a deficit of $900. She had the option to push back the dates and pay off the debt after her birthday. However, she chose to stay the course and stick to the goal of being debt-free for her birthday. Eventually, she did it but not without setbacks She picked up like a million side hustles. She did everything from charging electric scooters, to shipping books for an author, creating pins on Pinterest, tutoring, basically anything that could make her extra money. She managed to pay off her student loan about two weeks before her birthday. There were some setbacks along the way though. When they decided to follow the debt-free plan Katie had to get a job and she did. However, she couldn’t use the Metro to get to work. She needed another car. Remember, she had just sold hers. They ended up buying a car for $12,000, increasing the amount that she needed to pay off. However, this was much better than the $50,000 car loan she was paying off last time. Another setback was that they had their wedding coming up in July. Katie’s birthday is in May. So it was a very small gap in terms of saving up for them. They had committed to not going into debt for the wedding. So on top of paying off debts, they had to save up enough money to pay cash for the wedding. Commitment pays Katie’s commitment and hard work to stay the course paid off as they were able to pay for their wedding in cash. She also paid off all her previous debts. Most of the gifts that they got for the wedding were cash. So after the wedding, they had extra money laying around for the first time. As of last month, they are debt-free. Lessons learned If you don’t feel right about something don’t do it Katie remembers the day she cosigned the car loan for her ex vividly. She had this nagging feeling in her stomach. While she didn’t understand the loan process, she had a sixth sense that told her something was not right about the whole scenario. Unfortunately, she ignored her gut landing herself in trouble with the creditors. From this she learned a huge lesson: if you don’t feel right about something, don’t do it because, at the end of the day, it is your name that will be on that line. You might think it’s just a stupid little paper, no big deal. But the creditors and the lenders do not feel the same way. At the end of the day, it’s going to be your tail working two or three jobs crying and exhausted having to pay that debt off. Understand what you’re signing before you put down your signature Never cosign a loan for somebody you’re dating, ever, or any other adult for that matter. But, if you must, always be fully aware of what you are signing up for. Do your research and make sure you are making the right decision. The decision you make now is going to impact you later on in your life. That piece of paper you put your signature on is legal and binding. You are going to be held accountable. Understanding the terms of that documents is therefore critical. Be deliberate with your debt-free plan One of the reasons why the couple was able to get Katie out of debt was because they were deliberate about being debt-free. They put a debt-free plan in place after figuring out where they wanted to go. If you’re in debt come up with a reasonable plan and follow through with it. Re-evaluate your plan now and then and always work on achieving the goals of your plan. Put your priorities in order The secret of how to become debt-free on a low income is to put your priorities in order. Like Katie, you have your everyday bills to pay off as well as different types of debt to clear. It’s a tough situation to be in but you can do it. Put your priorities in order, cut back on your spending and spend only on what is important and necessary. If necessary, work an extra job or have a side hustle on top of your full-time job. Then put all that extra money towards your debt to help pay it off quicker. Seek help from a financial advisor You may not have a Denis to help you stay the course toward a debt-free lifestyle but that doesn’t mean you should do it alone. Go to a financial coach and ask for advice. If you have no one that you feel that you can go to, go to a financial advisor, a professional in the industry who can help break things down for you. The truth is that you can’t do it alone, reach out for help. Don’t bury your head in the sand Pretending that the debt does not exist will not make it go away. Don’t practice the ostrich technique when it comes to paying off your debt. And that’s sticking your head in the ground and you pretend it’s not there. Don’t do that. Andrew’s takeaways Don’t help others until you can help yourself It doesn’t matter how much you know someone, if you’re not financially capable to help yourself, don’t go helping them. You should refrain from cosigning loans at all, especially for people you’re in a relationship with because chances are it will get ugly. Don’t do things in isolation, especially where your money is concerned Even though you may feel confident in your decisions, always talk to someone before you go ahead and put your money on the line. Even the best professionals in the financial world talk to other people when considering their investment options. Don’t put your money where your heart is Never invest or get involved financially with someone you’re in a relationship with. Now, there are times that such things can work out. But it’s a danger zone. The best option is to not do it and avoid entanglements as much as you can. Have someone you can turn to for advice Identify someone that you can go to for advice even before you get into financial trouble. Ask yourself right now who your go-to person is. If you are in financial trouble, who would you go to? They could be a sibling, parent, colleague, or friend. Designate that person today so that when that financial event comes up, you have someone to turn to for advice before you make the wrong choice. Don’t get attached to things We’re all going to be dust under the ground someday. So don’t build up your life around attachment to the material things you have. Sell off that house if it will dig you out of debt and get you out of negative equity. Actionable advice Katie and Denis’s advice is to be very aware of what you’re signing and understand the legal implications of everything you do. Just because you’re young is not an excuse for not understanding what you’re doing. If anything, that’s the most critical time that you have to fully understand what you’re doing, and do your homework. No. 1 goal for next the 12 months Denis and Katie’s number one goal for the next 12 months, now that they’re finally debt-free, is to save up for a house. They are looking to put up a 20% down-payment in the next 12 months. Parting words “No matter how scary it is for you to face the debt demons, get it over with and face them now, because it’s not going to get any better. Katie O’Brien “There’s a lot of great resources online about negative equity that you can use to make the debt load a lot easier.” Denis O’Brien You can also check out Andrew’s books How to Start Building Your Wealth Investing in the Stock Market My Worst Investment Ever 9 Valuation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them Transform Your Business with Dr. Deming’s 14 Points You can also check out Andrew’s online programs Valuation Master Class Women Building Wealth The Build Your Wealth Membership Group Become a Great Presenter and Increase Your Influence Transform Your Business with Dr. Deming’s 14 Points Connect with Denis and Katie O’Brien Podcast Twitter Facebook Website Email Connect with Andrew Stotz astotz.com LinkedIn Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube My Worst Investment Ever Podcast
Katie Lighthall is the Coordinator for the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Strategy in the Western Region. She assists federal, state, local, and tribal agencies as well as non-governmental organizations so that they can be ready in case of a large fire disaster. When you're coordinating for multiple agencies, it's important that everybody is on the same page as quickly as possible. Katie shares her experiences on today's show and showcases how she got into this field, in the first place! Key Takeaways: [1:10] A message from Leadership Nature. [1:50] A quick intro about Katie's background. [3:35] How did Katie first get introduced to this industry? [8:15] What kind of training do you need to get started in this work? [11:0] When Katie had her first child, she still wanted to be involved with the fire department, but without taking calls in the middle of the night. [14:05] Katie explains why we need a national cohesive wildland fire management strategy. [20:50] Large fires are not handled by local firefighters. When big fires happen, they call state or even federal crews. This means there are multiple agencies coming in to tackle the fire. [23:50] Everybody has a small part to play when it comes to wildland fire. [27:25] What is the end-vision for the cohesive strategy? [32:15] You need to evacuate your home earlier on red-flag warning day if you are caring for someone who has a disability and depends on you. Don't wait till you receive an evacuation notice. The system is overwhelmed and by the time they get to you, it could be too late. [36:25] What do leaders need to do better? [41:15] What is Katie the proudest of about her career? Katie and Hideo talk about Katie’s recent marriage to another second generation, the struggle to live the values of the church, and the innate need for belonging. TRANSCRIPT News Announcer [00:00:01] A decade ago, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon was accused of controlling the minds of young people creating so-called Moonies News Announcer [00:00:08] So-called Moonies, followers of the Reverend Sun Myung Moon, head of the Unification Church, who became well-known in the early 80s for his mass wedding ceremonies. Interpreter [00:00:16] Do you pledge to establish an eternal family with which God can be happy. Crowd [00:00:25] Yes! Interpreter [00:00:25] We are talking about absolute fidelity here. If anybody deviates from this God-given principle, they are bound to hell. News Announcer [00:00:35] But the church has a different plan for the second generation. 2nd Gen [00:00:38] I felt like we weren't equipped for the world. You know, we aren't just like this bubble. 2nd Gen [00:00:43] To me it sounds culty. I know it's what brought our parents to church but it's not what keeps me in the church. 2nd Gen [00:00:48] Even if I'm not doing everything that they want me to do or I don't believe everything that they believe, we still have this like line that connects us. Hideo Higashibaba [00:01:00] My name is Hideo Higashibaba until four years ago. I was a part of a cult called the Unification Church. You might know them as the Moonies. This is Growing Up Moonie, stories of people who grew up in the church like I did. One of the only Moonies I still talk to is my friend Katie. We've known each other since we were babies. Her mum took care of me when my mum was a full-time missionary. Katie is a year older than me, and we were never very close, but we tried to look out for each other at workshops and church camp. After high school we lost touch and the next time we saw each other was in our early 20s in Japan. I was in Tokyo for an internship and she was visiting family nearby. Hideo Higashibaba [00:01:44] We met at a cafe can caught up. It had been a tough few years for Katie. She had struggled with her health, her brother had left the church and wasn't talking to anyone in his family, and her parents had been looking for a match for her for years. She got her hopes up with each person and each time it didn't work out in money matching everyone both the kids and the parents have a say. Katie had been rejected both by potential matches and his parents and that hurt. Hideo Higashibaba [00:02:17] After Tokyo we stayed in touch over Facebook and texts. We spoke in the summer of 2017 for this project and by that time Katie had some big news. Hideo Higashibaba [00:02:27] You look really sleepy are you OK? Katie [00:02:30] Oh no, I'm fine. I just got back last night from Iowa. Hideo Higashibaba [00:02:34] Oh, what were you doing in Iowa? Katie [00:02:36] I was seeing Kenny. Hideo Higashibaba [00:02:38] Kenny is Katie's husband now. When Katie and I talked they were about to go to Chun Pyung in South Korea to be married along with 4,000 couples. It's weird, but even though we were bombarded with the matching and blessing our whole lives, neither I nor any of my siblings went through the process. I actually didn't know very much about how it works. So I asked Katie what it's been like for her. Katie [00:03:02] I started when I was 20 and the first guy was four months and we got really close to getting engaged. That one was a good relationship, but definitely not what I am experiencing now with the relationship I'm in right now. It's a totally different dimension. With that one it was more about you know doing what your parents want, like going into the process because you know it's the right thing to do and it's part of the church and you know all that stuff. And I feel like a lot of the relationships I went through was sort of on that dimension. I've been through five before Kenny and I feel like I was taking on that other perspective kind of thing where you like in it, but you're not in it, you know, like your heart isn't fully in it. Hideo Higashibaba [00:03:56] When we were younger the founder of the church, Moon, still arranged marriages in what were called matching ceremonies. That's how most first generation were married. There was also something called 'parents matching' where many parents would find a spouse for their kid, and then there was a variation on that where second gen would find someone on their own and ask their parents permission. The process has modernized over the years. There's a website now like a Match.com for Moonies. Hideo Higashibaba [00:04:26] Do most people find their matches through their parents through the website? Katie [00:04:31] No. These days people are actually like finding other people they think would be good matches and then having their parents, like talking to their parents about it and seeing what their parents say so that the kids are very much involved these days. Just because there's been so many mistakes and so many break ups and so many matches that broke and stuff and it's always really hard for the kid. So parents see that and they don't want definitely kids, so they're a little more loose these days. There are people who are getting blessed to people you know who are first gen outside the movement and they go to the blessing and there are people find each other like me and Kenny except not through our parents but through just like mutual friends or just they themselves met up and thought they would be a good match because they felt very connected. Hideo Higashibaba [00:05:24] Are they even holding meetings anymore? Katie [00:05:26] No they're not. It just got weird. At one point they were matching people based off their thumbs. Hideo Higashibaba [00:05:35] You heard that right. Their thumbs. Moon died a few years ago and his wife Hak Ja Han took over, but she did it a little differently than her husband. Hak Ja Han had men and women stand on each side of the room. Then she told everyone to fold their hands like they were praying. Then the women were told to cross the room to find someone with a matching thumb on top. But no women were moving, so they had the men choose instead. Yeah, that's when it got weird. Katie's family really wanted her to be blessed to another second gen. I think there was extra pressure to marry her off because she was the first child. Originally, she and Kenny chatted for a few months and it was going well. Then they got into a fight and Katie broke it off. But two years later... Hideo Higashibaba [00:06:26] He actually texted me out of the blue, even though I said never contacted me again. He texted me out of the blue and he said like there's so many things that I think could work out about us and things that I feel like I still think about and it's true. Like for me the whole relationship, the first time was amazing. I felt so connected to him...like it's interesting like when you meet someone and you feel like it's so different from any other person you've been with. And it just feels right. It's kind of like my last attempt to keep my mother involved in the process and to show her that you know all her attempts weren't in vain. So he was actually kind of my last chance, after him I was actually kind of thinking about dating other people and not really being churchy. So anyway it's a weird dynamic but I'm here, I'm in this life, and it's working out really well right now. So that's all I'm really grateful for. Hideo Higashibaba [00:07:37] Katie is a second generation, a Blessed Child born without original sin. The entire purpose of her life, for her entire life, was to marry another blessed child and have a family with him. To do something or be someone else felt impossible. But after spending most of her 20s looking for a match she was about to give up, try dating. She told Kenny to never contact her again, but he ignored her and they kept talking and she fell in love and found a reason to stay. She made the choice to stay. As children we were told to beware of the temptations of Satan, of outsiders. We had to protect ourselves and our purity. Katie says she worked so hard to be unattractive it just seemed impossible for someone to have a crush on her. Katie [00:08:31] If a guy was attracted to me I never knew. Because one thing, I gained a lot of weight. I was very smelly. I just never never thought that anyone would like me because I tried so hard not to let people like me so if there was someone who did like me it surprised me. It was like I was watching the world from a different perspective, like I wasn't really part of it. But I wasn't really not a part of it. If that makes sense? I spent a lot of time in my house not really hanging out with people, just kind of on my own watching TV a lot. And I've watched the TV and definitely wanted to kiss or wanted to make out or wanted to like, really try those things and really, you know, experiment I guess? Curiosity, all that stuff, but I just never really felt like I was missing out on anything because...I feel like sometimes I'm from a different world, one where I'm and doing the right things because I know in my heart that that's based off my values. Hideo Higashibaba [00:09:37] I heard this a lot when I was a Moonie. I even said it. Things like, I don't need friends or I'm not interested in dating because romance before marriage doesn't live up to my values. 'Living up to my values' was like a place holder for how I actually felt which was miserable and lonely. And for Katie... Katie [00:09:58] It's definitely made me feel isolated and lonely for sure but I don't feel like I had some support from other BCs too like I feel so much support from them. And even going to church every week I felt like I could be myself more, I felt like I was supported more. Most of my friends are BC because, you know, 'the outside secular world, you don't want to be friends with them' kind of thing. I had my community and I think that really helped me pull through the loneliness and isolation. Hideo Higashibaba [00:10:35] Growing up, Katie's parents weren't around much. Like most Moonies, they worked a lot. Many of the first generation didn't finish college and spent most of their 20s and 30s as full time missionaries which made it hard to find good paying work to support a family. So a lot of church members work for companies owned by the church. My dad works for a church owned business so does Katie's mom. Katie's parents also had a flower shop they worked at on weekends. Her brother was going through his own stuff so Katie spent a lot of time alone. Katie [00:11:09] You could definitely feel that they were trying. They were trying really hard. They just wanted to do the right thing. Sometimes you didn't really found my parents but they were there which is the weird part. Hideo Higashibaba [00:11:19] Without support from her parents Katie's sole refuge became the church community. More than the teachings or the rituals, it was the people that held her up, held her together. So she was heartbroken when her brother left and stopped talking with his family. I also left and no longer speak with my family and it's hard for Katie to not think of her brother when we're talking. Her grief is so near the surface. Katie [00:11:48] And the thing is I don't care about doctrine or dogma. I don't really care for it if it splits up people that you love, people that, you know, you care about, people who are...for some people people in their family and it just hurts me that he's he just he's hurting because see he just strongly doesn't believe in the dogma and because of that that led to breaking off his relationship with us and I just don't believe in the dogma like that. I don't believe in a doctrine like that. Hideo Higashibaba [00:12:23] Oh Katie, it's probably more complicated than. Katie [00:12:26] Yeah. Hideo Higashibaba [00:12:28] It's all the more frustrating for Katie because she doesn't believe some of the church's most important teachings. Katie [00:12:35] I don't believe in True Parents being the Messiah. I don't really. It's not really something I strongly believe in. I mean I thought they brought really important ideas that the world could really benefit from. I'm here because of the community rather than because, you know, True Parents and they'll save the world from evil in return all our minds the Original Mind and all that stuff, because to me it sounds culty. It sounds very untrue. It sounds very difficult to fathom and very out there. I know it's what brought our parents to the church but it's not what keeps me in the church. Hideo Higashibaba [00:13:18] Katie's found so much love and belonging in the church, maybe it's hard for her to imagine that it's not the same for other people. And now she's married to Kenny. When we spoke just a few weeks before they got blessed she sounded so happy and content. Katie [00:13:35] It's just the connection is so magnetic and so like strong and I know it's not really like 'parent's matching,' it's not really churchy or not very by the books but it just works and is still working and I see it working for the rest of my life. Hideo Higashibaba [00:13:56] Are you in love with him? Katie [00:13:57] I am so in love with him. I am head over heels in love with him and it has been from the beginning. Hideo Higashibaba [00:14:02] I mean did you did you expect that for yourself when you thought about this when you were young. Katie [00:14:09] Not at all. For me I was just like a duty like I had to do because my parents wanted me to do it and I did it because it's like it's something I've been saving up for my whole life and it's just a bonus that I fell in love with him. Because with my parents it was over time that they fell in love with each other. It wasn't at the beginning but their love grew and actually it was what keeps them together I guess. So that's what I'm worried about is just like if if this magnetism and this infatuation phase that we're in right now when it ends will we be able to continue it. On his side, I mean, I know for myself that I committed I'm going to work through anything to be with him anyway. We'll see. It's in the future. Hideo Higashibaba [00:15:03] And that future got way harder than Katie imagined. About a year into her marriage Katie had a realization about the church: the overwork and fundraising and constant guilt weren't necessary. The church wasn't everything it said it was. Katie's doubts about the True Parents, the doctrine and practices of the church all came to a head and she had to take a mental step back. And even though Katie loves the church and the community she's struggled with loneliness and isolation. Katie [00:15:35] For me the hardest thing about being in the church, and just even being half-Asian, is that that I can't talk about it with other people because they don't understand. Like they'll never fully understand my experience. And the fact that you're so open about it and the fact that you can talk to other people about it is so amazing for me to hear that from you and that you're so open with other people because I think and I'm kind of jealous. Katie [00:16:03] I wish I could be more open but I feel...for me the worst thing for me in the world is that if someone rejects me. And I can't do that. I can't fathom the idea that someone would reject me because it's part of who I am and I realize it's very difficult to take. Hideo Higashibaba [00:16:28] The Unification Church is a cult that isolates its members by telling them to fear the outside world. And Katie was born into that fear. If she's rejected from the church she will lose everything; her community, her friends, her family. So she hides parts of herself to avoid rejection. She's not the only recently married, half-Asian, religious person in the world or even in her city. But she only feels safe with other Moonies. People outside the faith are scary to her, not trustworthy. She expects them to have an ulterior motive. She knows the church is weird but she says Moonies are just more pure. Katie [00:17:09] I know this sounds culty but just feels like pure in the sense that we know we're not supposed to be dating so we know that even if we do have an attraction it's not something that we act on immediately. It's more about like knowing that that person is for someone else and then treating them just as a friend or just like a sibling or something and then you just show real close to them and realize that you know it's not going to go further than that. Katie [00:17:37] Another thing too is I notice like, people they expect something in return instead of just giving because they want to give. People are always like kind of protecting themselves because they feel like no other person can be a complete monster. And I just never really thought that from this community I don't feel as judged. I don't feel as as much of a stranger as more of a part of their family kind of. I don't know it's just this whole bond that I feel with them is what keeps me going. I can't imagine myself leaving the church because if I left the church it would be leaving that bond and that feeling like that I'm home in that part of this family and I'm part of something bigger. Hideo Higashibaba [00:18:26] But with her new realization Katie doesn't want to just believe whatever she's told. She worries about being seen as brainwashed or delusional. We recently started emailing back and forth and I asked if she's still considered herself a church member. This is my friend, also named Kate, reading from one of Katie's emails . Kate [00:18:46] I do still go to church and I do engage with the community but it feels slightly disjointed. I'm more about the church lifestyle. I don't consider myself as having broken away but at the same time I don't consider myself as having fully stayed. Hideo Higashibaba [00:19:02] Katie is the only person I spoke to for this project who is committed to staying in the church but is also determined to think for herself. She refuses to accept the idea that you have to believe all the church's teachings to be a church member. That you have to give up your community just because you don't agree with them on some things. I wonder how hard that must be, especially on things that hit really close to home. Katie [00:19:27] One thing I really don't appreciate about Kenny's viewpoint sometimes, is that he thinks being gay is something that you can flip and that you can learn to get out of. I truly don't believe that. He said he was going to send me a book, I can't remember what it's called, it's basically 'Getting the Gay Out' or something like that. Hideo [00:19:49] That stuff is so hateful Katie. Katie [00:19:52] I know! For me my thinking is that this love and this connection that I have with Kenny is so precious to me that I know that there are people out there who happen to be same sex but I know that if they have the same feelings that I have for Kenny then I really wouldn't want them to lose that. Hideo Higashibaba [00:20:14] It's 2019 and Kenny thinks being gay is a choice and he's married to my friend. Katie is a gentle, kind, understanding person. She was very supportive when I told her I'm queer and transgender. So finding out that she's married to someone with such terrible and ignorant opinions is kind of scary for me. If Kenny doesn't have enough empathy to believe gay people exist is he really going to be able to take care of her? Katie has told me more than once that she wants to have children with Kenny. What if they're gay? Hideo Higashibaba [00:20:50] Sure, I might be overreacting. I bet there are plenty of homophobic people who are in perfectly fine relationships. But Katie is my friend. We were chatting once and she said, 'I would love for you to meet Kenny' and I reminded her that I'm gay. I don't want to meet him. Katie's intense commitment to Kenny reminds me of my parents who have been miserably married for 36 years. I'm not claiming to know anything about relationships. You might have missed it, but I was kind of raised in a cult, so I don't know shit about anything and I know that. But neither my parents nor Katie had any other relationships before they got married. I wonder if that makes it hard to know what's healthy and what's not and what really makes two people compatible. But what Katie always comes back to is the community. In a recent email she said that her choices about the church aren't just for her. Kate [00:21:46] In thinking about the future and my future kids, I think the most important thing about growing up is having a community you can turn to when things get rough. A community of people who want to support and love each other. I can't fathom not having that community of support and raising my kids alone. I have my beliefs and I believe that they are strong enough that I can teach my kids to think for themselves rather than subscribe immediately to the church doctrine. My community just happens to be considered a cult. The most important part of growing up money is deciding truly what you believe and sticking with it no matter what the popular opinion is. Hideo Higashibaba [00:22:24] Katie told me she doesn't think all of the church's teachings are bad. She still thinks that most of society's problems could be fixed by resolving quote 'familial relationships' and that it's freeing to relate to people without thinking of them sexually. Hideo Higashibaba [00:22:40] Knowing my friend believes those things is hard for me. The Christian far-right has been saying that we need to 'rebuild the family' for decades. It's a way to push queer and trans people, single parents, and survivors of abuse to the margins. And how do I explain to her that yes, some people see others just as sex objects and we all agree those people are horrible and gross but not everyone is horrible and gross. My friends and chosen family certainly aren't. But I think what Katie is really saying is that she doesn't like that people outside the church are connected to their sexuality. They aren't afraid of sexual attraction and they act on those feelings even if they aren't married or dating. Katie doesn't want to live around people like that. And she doesn't want to raise her children around people like that. People like me. What she wants is all the goodness and purity she expects from Moonies. Katie [00:23:36] I've met some people who kind of fit the bill in terms of the genuineness and the love that they have for other people. And the fact that they're constantly trying to improve themselves so that they can show that they really care for other people without the whole like, 'do they want to have sex with me' or 'are they just doing that because I know they are hurt and they act that way because they've been hurt before.' I mean obviously not church kids have that sort of feeling. They definitely have been through a lot. It's just like there are certain people who are so genuine that they've worked through all those thoughts and feelings and they have found something that really gets them through it. And get them through difficulties and I found it for myself, I think. Within this church community and within this life. Hideo Higashibaba [00:24:43] Next time on Growing Up Moonie... Hideo Higashibaba [00:24:46] I feel like the closer I get to being who I am by coming out as gay and coming out as gender nonconforming like, there is no shred of doctrine that could justify my existence at this point. Hideo Higashibaba [00:24:57] That's next time on Growing Up Moonie. Hideo Higashibaba [00:25:09] Growing up Moonie is written by me. This episode was edited and produced by Quinn Myers, with music by Podingtonbear. Special thanks to Kate Bennett. When Katie and Sarah met up in a rainy London playground with their two small children, they struck up an amazing and surprising friendship that was to lead to a wonderfully successful new business. They realized that all Mums should have access to a free and fun way to make friends nearby in the same boat. And in May 2016 the app Mush was launched. In this candid conversation at Mush HQ White City London, Sarah reveals the story behind the creation of Mush, the trials and tribulations of growing a startup tech business as a young Mum, and her passion and joy of watching her business baby go from strength to strength. “Babies aren’t great company—they get better with age, I think, but when they’re small you don’t get a lot back and I think that can be quite difficult.” [1:30] Mush was born out of Sarah and Katie’s experiences as Mums and realizing that there was no local social network for Mums—no way to connect and support one another. You make a profile that contains the age range of your kids and the app will connect Mums with similar interests and kids of the same ages. There are also ways to reach out with questions, support, and find meetups. And of course, talk about sleep—the rarest of commodities for any Mum. “The idea is that when you become a parent – it can be an incredibly overwhelming time in your life. Especially as a Mum at home with small kids, you really need local Mum pals to hang out with—share those highs and lows with, and just make it all a load more fun.” [10:08] Sarah is quick to point out that when they sat down to actually start work on the app they weren’t in some quaint café sipping latte’s, they were huddled around a Pizza Express with kids screaming around them—just celebrating that they’d made it through another week. The app went live within a year of having the idea – although the features were kept to a minimum, there were technical issues to deal with as well. Still, the app proved a point: Mums needed this app. People were leaving 5 star reviews even if the app didn’t work for them, because they wanted to show how much they needed something like Mush in their lives. [18:50] Now thousands of Mums use the app everyday with no signs of slowing down in 2019. Mush now works with mental health charities and even the Royal Family. The feedback has been incredible, communities have started in the app, and sifting through the comments and reviews is the fuel that keeps Mush improving and expanding to all over the UK, Australia, and if Sarah and Katie have their way—the rest of the globe. "I add value by just being me." I met a new friend at an open mic night (that she was performing at), and she started listening to the Worthfull Project when she found out about my podcast. I'm always so flattered and grateful anytime anyone listens to the show, but when she told me she had some thoughts to share that would make a great episode, I was even more delighted. When Katie and I sat down to record this episode, she started telling me about her experiences of growing up with an anxiety disorder, how she loved herself regardless, and what it taught her about self-worth. I was mesmerized and knew this was what the episode needed to be about. Every one of us has struggles and imperfections in this life. It's so easy to believe that they make us less than or less lovable. This conversation is all about the opposite -- and how we can find our worth through our quirks. 070 | Katie Moodie Shares Why You Should Consider a Plan B, C, & D in Business A graduate of UCSD with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Katie Moodie launched her entrepreneurial spirit into residential real estate soon after graduation. Fueled by the excitement of business development, she eventually realized she could combine this enthusiasm with her personal interests and passion for natural wellness. Diving into research, she began to develop natural remedies for her family, friends and colleagues and before long, her products were in demand. Finding a very supportive community in San Diego of other cannabis advocates, she teamed up with key scientific partners to utilize 100% of the plant in order to develop KB Pure Essentials organic product line. Have you ever heard someone say, that having a Plan B means that you’re not fully committed to Plan A? This absolutely not true, and this week’s guest agrees! This week’s guest, Katie Moodie, had to learn the hard way, that not having a Plan B for your business can actually cause damaging problems. Katie and her partner produce CBD oil, which makes it difficult to get banks and merchant processor to do business with them (since local and federal government don’t support the CBD or Cannabis space yet). Through the struggle, Katie never once gave up, even when one of her merchant processors was doing shady business and ended up keeping $20K of Katie’s revenue. She just kept on going, trying different approaches. However, the one thing Katie wishes she had done was create a Plan B before it was too late. KB Pure Essentials was started by Katie Moodie because her friend Brooke had epilepsy and found that using CBD oil helped with the symptoms. The first big NO that Katie experienced was with something as simple as a bank account. You don’t realize how easy it is for a bank to tell you NO. Katie shares the full story! It took a long time for Katie and her team to find a permanent solution for selling online, because getting a payment processor to accept them was as difficult as opening a bank account when being in the CBD or Cannabis space. Katie and her partner applied to OVER 100 different merchant processors, before being accepted by one. Katie was able to power through each every one of those NO’s by being passionate about the product and the good it could bring to people. Katie’s most devastating NO was when her first merchant processor placed a hold on the money that was coming in from sales, and did not return it (over $20,000) because of reasons they couldn’t legally share. Going forward with her new merchant processor, Katie shares her biggest lessons learned and what she won’t let happen again. Katie and Brooke have been through the ringer, but they keep going like the Energizer Battery. “Sometimes you have to get shaken up a little bit to get laser focused on your goals again.” ~ Katie Moodie Months of planning went into the online launch of KB Essentials, and of that time, the money from the sales was lost. Katie shares this devastating story! Being left with NO other options, Katie and her partner began pursuing different revenue streams to build their business. Katie advises that you should have a Plan B, and C and D, in case A and more fail. When Katie first started out, she had to turn some hemp growers away because of their shady business practices. Listen to this episode to learn how she overcame that. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, Katie advises you to watch out for the Sharks, who are trying to take advantage of the “little” guy. Katie shares what she would tell her younger self. Connect with Katie Moodie: Katie’s Website Facebook Twitter Instagram P.S. When Was The Last Time You Took A Risk In Your Business? Maybe you’ve been bogged down in “what ifs.” Maybe you believe risks have to be outrageous to pay off at all. But neither idea will help you get to the next level in business OR life. What will? My guest for The Happy Hour # 208 is Katie Davis Majors. Katie is an author, speaker, blogger, and founder of Amazima Ministries, an organization that cares for vulnerable children and families in Uganda. Katie moved to Uganda over a decade ago with no idea that this would be the place that God chose to build her home and her family. Today, she is a wife to Benji and mama to her fourteen favorite people. Katie and I start out the show talking about Katie's journey to Uganda and adoption of her 13 girls. When Katie was 18, she made her first trip to Uganda and knew she'd be back. Katie tells us how 80% of East African children are in orphanages not because of lack of family, but due to poverty. Katie learned that in some cases simply paying for school would allow those children to stay with their families. Katie kept sponsoring more kids, and more and more people joined in to support these kids and Amazima Ministries was born! Katie then shares how she came to know and foster 3 girls. When it became clear that there was no family for these children to be reunited with, they became Katie's daughters through adoption. The stories continued and by age 23, Katie was now mom to her 13 beautiful girls. We then talk about the difficult season she walked through facing multiple losses. Katie speaks about the loneliness, pain, and questions she had and describes how near God was to her in that time. She reminds us, "we can bring our hearts to God, He sees them anyway, and He loves us regardless." I also appreciated her honesty in talking about challenges that can happen in adoption with connecting with your children. In the last part of our conversation, we get to hear the story of Katie and her husband Benji and their family of 13 daughters and a son. You guys - it is the sweetest and includes both of them declining dates with each other at one point! I loved my conversation with Katie so much. I was encouraged, inspired, and reminded of how when we say yes, whether it's moving overseas or sponsoring a child's education, God does amazing, incredible things! {You can listen to the show HERE, and make sure you never miss a Happy Hour - subscribe using your favorite podcast app (ie. iTunes, Google Play). I worked in the entertainment industry for 17 years, and I grew jaded to being starstruck… but this episode is a dream come true for me. I got to sit down with Byron Katie, whose work and story helped me pick myself up & transform my life. Katie, creator of The Work, is driven by a single mission: teaching people how to end their own suffering. Katie found herself at the bottom of a ten-year spiral when she realized that when she believed her stressful thoughts, she suffered, but that when she questioned them, she didn't suffer – and that this is true for every human being. Now, Katie guides people through a powerful process of inquiry she calls The Work, in which anyone can find their stressful beliefs about life, other people, or themselves & radically shift them. The result is a life changed forever. The Work is an astonishingly simple process – as you’ll hear in this episode – accessible to anyone at any age and from any background; all you need is an open mind. Even from the darkest depths of suffering and loss, anyone can learn to trace unhappiness to its source and deal with it there – trust me. Take these tools, open your mind, and set yourself free. –Luke Topics Discussed In This Episode: How Luke found Katie (after being dragged there by his father) When Katie hit rock bottom How a chance run-in with a cockroach completely changed Katie’s (and Luke’s) life Coming to terms with the fact that the world is a projected image of our thoughts Our motivation to ease the world’s suffering Katie gets labeled enlightened – but she says, “I’m just someone who knows the difference between what hurts and what doesn’t.” Everything in life is awesome… if you choose to frame it that way with your thinking Sparing ourselves from the desire for approval Our futile attempts to argue with reality… and why we always lose The irony of struggling to win love and approval Why it’s called “The Work” Luke gets completely raw & vulnerable about some resentment he’s working through right now, going through the 4 questions & turnarounds of The Work to show you how the magic happens The life-changing work done at Katie’s Turnaround House A Mind At Home With Itself, Katie’s commentary on the Diamond Sutra, one of the great spiritual texts of the world More about this episode. In the last episode of our summer series, we had the most delightful conversation with writer, blogger, and foodie, Katie Curtis. We definitely talk about more than food, but Katie shares with us how food has become a source of memories. Both from her childhood and also as a way to make memories with her own family, food is at the root of these memories. Living in a liturgical paradigm also helps us eat with the seasons in a way that connects us to God’s beautiful and plentiful bounty. Katie shares how God used times of isolation to grow her in her love of others, whether family or neighbors, and use food and fellowship to build friendships and family relationships. So, pull out your old cookbooks, find a family favorite recipe, put on some good music, pour a glass of wine, invite your friends or neighbors, and eat and laugh and commune together. Break bread together friends, delight in God’s gift of food and relationships. Please consider supporting our Podcast Our Guest: Katie Curtis started blogging when she was completely capsized by motherhood. Katie dropped out of a PhD program in Philosophy, had a traveling husband, and 3 kids in 3 years. Her heart felt like it had grown 1,000 times bigger, and the growing pains hurt. But cooking for her people always made everything better. Katie started really cooking when she was 30 – as in read all the cookbooks cover to cover and started to know the exact week when fiddlehead ferns or peaches are in season – but she blames most of her love of food on her childhood. Our guest grew up in a big Irish Catholic family where her mom made Asparagus with Hollandaise, German potato salad with bacon and vinegar, stuffed pork tenderloin and carrots with butter and parsley, and homemade banana creme cake. Sometimes all in the same meal. Katie’s mom and inspiration studied in France and those studies influenced her love of good food which she passed down to her family. This is when Katie started to see that food is memories. “The family table nourished and shaped me, and I hope to do the same for my family.” “I hope to help other families find easy ways to make memories too.” –Katie Curtis You can find the author’s work at Coastal Home Magazine and NH Magazine. She also writes a lot here. And you must take the time to delight yourself in Katie’s first novel just released earlier this summer. The storyline and characters in Wideness of the Sea will captivate your heart and imagination. When Katie is not cooking dinner, she is editing her first memoir, to be published in in the near future, incubating twins due in October, or chauffeuring her 4 other kids around. She also likes to daydream about living in France with her crew and having all the laundry done for longer then 30 seconds. When Katie was pregnant with her first child, she was diagnosed with OCD and signed herself in to an inpatient treatment program. Her OCD was mostly triggered by her career as a nurse (although in hindsight she can see signs of it in childhood memories) and the symptoms were completely incapacitating. Katie says that even though she hates having OCD, she's thankful that she can connect with other people who are suffering and that having a diagnosis gives her hope that she won't ever go to the uncontrolled dark place again. The boys are back to discuss a movie about rub downs and rub outs. When Katie inherits a business from her deceased uncle she had no idea she would be running a brothel. Her attempts to turn the business legitimate run afoul of the local mafia and she finds herself in a real sticky situation. A fun and very obscure exploitation film from the 1970's, the Manhandlers is a dig way down deep into the bin of grindhouse cinema.

I have a freebie for you. Maven Moment: Katie and I agree on so much, so it's hard to pick one specific 'Maven Moment' in today's interview. What I can say though, and it's something not many of my previous guests have mentioned before, how you spend money during the first year can almost make or break your business. Katie spoke about not being very wise with how she spent her money because she was in this 'desperation' mode. Instead of shopping around for a coach, she hired the first one she spoke to. Instead of talking with her ideal audience and seeing what they needed, she just jumped in with her two feet, which isn't always bad, but it made her feel more lost. It was as recent as 1996 that the WNBA, the Women’s National Basketball Association was formed, and the first season began in June 1997. Since then, the WNBA has been the home for the best women’s basketball talent in the world. Among the brightest spots in that short history has been Katie Smith, the all-time leading scorer in WNBA history, Olympic athlete, and now coach. About people’s response to her accomplishments: It’s a little surreal. When you’re in something and you’re doing something you don’t think how big it is because you’re just doing your job. So sometimes, you’re like, ‘Oh, I did that.”... Honestly, it’s just more of a, ‘Wow!' You know, going down the road from where I came from and here I am and did all these fun things. It was pretty amazing. In this conversation, I chat with Katie about her growing up years, how she got interested in athletics, about her college and pro careers, and what she’s learning as she transitions into her new role as an assistant and soon-to-be head coach. You will love what Katie has to say about doing her time as humble apprentice who is eager to learn the art of coaching, instead of just assuming she can make the player-to-coach transition. Katie was always the type who wanted to study, get things right and give the best effort whether it was basketball, school or dance. As Katie Smith grew up her parents allowed her to be involved in all kinds of activities, from basketball to dance class. In all those experiences there was very little expected of her except that she give it her all in every setting. That mindset served her well as she began to excel in basketball and move from high school to college. Katie and I chat about those formative years, the role her parents and brothers played in her development as an athlete and the way she learned to use her natural and learned skills as a player to dominate on the court. The mental game in basketball is important, but it can also be an exercise in overthinking. As we chatted about her career I was very interested to hear how Katie Smith dealt with the mental aspects of the game. I was surprised to learn that she felt that while it was important to think things through - watching film, learning about opponents, improving her knowledge of the things she’d face on the court - she also said that she had a tendency to overthink it at times instead of letting her instinct and natural abilities do their thing. You can hear Katie’s approach to the game (and life) from a mental standpoint in this great conversation. Moving from all-star player to coach - a natural transition. Katie Smith was a natural on the court, playing at a top competitive level for her entire career. It turns out she’s also making the transition from player to coach in a pretty natural way as well. While there are definitely challenges, she’s finding that the role fits her well and that her desire to motivate and inspire players comes to her comfortably. Here’s a bit of what she had to say about the transition: When it comes to basketball, of course, there are lots of things I have to learn on the coaching side, and you are always questioning yourself, whether you’re doing enough, or was it the wrong play call, or are you doing this - but it’s something that I DO know and it’s a little easier to grasp.... But I enjoy life. Like, why not? I’ve been playing basketball forever, I’ve met great people, I’ve traveled the world, I have a great family - and honestly I want to keep growing and hopefully find a way to give back and kind of find that niche, you know because I’ve had so many people give to me and that the game has given to me and it’s like, how do I, now that I’m kind of done with the playing part, how do I use it? It’s fun but it’s also nerve-wracking. Outline of This Episode [0:23] Maureen’s introduction of Katie Smith, her guest this week. [2:04] How Katie feels when people cite her accomplishments. [3:00] When Katie realized that athletics was something she would pursue and the family support she received. [7:40] The expectations Katie’s parents had of her in anything she did. [24:10] The challenges of playing as she got older and had to deal with injuries. [28:20] The transition from player to coach. [33:10] The issue of the double-standard in the basketball culture. [38:04] Things Katie wishes she had done differently. Subscribe to The Mo' Motion Podcast . (Thank you to Freddie Astaire for his awesome intro music.) What was also notable to me was how Katie handled the pressure. Maybe she was lying through her perfect teeth when she said, "I was just playing basketball and loving every minute of the game. I was happy out there." When asked about how different her life would be if she was a male player with her accomplishments, Katie said sure, she'd love to have more money in her bank account, but she wasn't sold on the fame. She said she wouldn't be able to go anywhere without people wanting her or asking her for something. Listen to an honest, fun and inspirational podcast interview with one of the greats, Katie Smith. Katie will tell her about her parents and their parenting style through what it was like to endure two ACL tears and what she felt differentiated herself from other players during her path to excellence. In having spoken to Katie and after watching her on the sidelines at the Liberty games, I do think that she will be a truly outstanding head coach at the pro and/or college level in the near future.
