Hey there! It's been a while since you have heard from me. I have been very busy with family obligations, caring for a 90-year-old mother with dementia, and just creating a lot of programs and things behind the scenes. While I've been showing up online in written form and in video form, I have not created a podcast in quite a while. So this was the first one in a while, and I wanted to make sure that I shared this one with you so that you would have an understanding of what I have been working on behind the scenes. As you know, I am a wellness and retention strategist, an executive coach for Black and Brown women, and an AI integration specialist for small businesses. In my role, I work with Black and Brown women, as well as companies and organizations, to try to identify, well-being programs that will help our Black and Brown women excel in the workplace regardless of what's going on in their lives. So I wanted to share with you a blog that I wrote.Actually, it's my newsletter on LinkedIn. If you're not currently subscribed to the newsletter, you will want to do so so that you don't miss out!Today's newsletter was titled Lifting Each Other Up: Why I Created the Sanity Saver Certificates. So maybe you don't even know what the Sanity-Saver Certificates™are. Let me share that with you…So in my quiet time, quiet time from the podcast, I have been working on creating the Corporate She-Roes Collection™. It is a collection of different certificates. There will be 5 different collections of certificates that will honor the unsung heroes in the corporate space. The things that Black and Brown women do every day but don't get recognition for. These are things that we talk to each other about, right? So when we're having a bad day, either our work bestie will give us these kudos, in the hallway or if we're having to go to lunch together, go for a walk, even when we're just running to the bathroom. They see us in the bathroom, they see our sad look, they ask what's wrong, then they give us these titles for being these ‘superheroes' in the workplace.I decided instead of it just instead of it just being 1 on 1 with me and my clients or me and my besties – my work besties and my, you know, lifetime besties – instead of us just supporting each other and doing it on a smaller scale, I decided to create these certificates, the Corporate She-Roes Collection™, and start with the Sanity-Saver Certificates™. Because if there is one thing that we need as Black and Brown women in the workplace, it is definitely some encouragement, our kudos. We need to get our flowers while we're still living. We need to understand and know that we're being appreciated.I'd like to share with you today, the newsletter Lifting Each Other Up: Why I Created the Sanity-Saver Certificates.See you inside…What You Learn:All about the Corporate She-Roes Collection™ and the Sanity-Saver Certificates™That being a Black or Brown woman in the corporate world can feel like a constant uphill battleThe power of taking the time to recognize the contributions of Black and Brown women in the workplaceWhat's next for me and the podcast… stay tuned!Featured on the Show:Click HERE to download your copy of the Sanity-Saver Certificates™ and explore...

We are all made of stars. The elements of our bodies were first forged in celestial matter across the cosmos billions of years ago. As humans, we tend to think of ourselves as separate from nature, but we are of course, nature itself. So when Life Guide, astrologist and founder of Happiness U, Alice Inoue introduced me to her fascinating psychometric assessment based on the five elements of ancient traditional Chinese medicine - water, wood, fire, earth and metal – I knew this conversation was going to be filled with earthly, enlightening wisdom for both facilitation - and life!Alice teaches us about finding our natural superpowers in the elemental system, how to foster deeper group harmony, and how to see ourselves and others in a new dimension. As American school children, we learned it by heart, and recited it every day."I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America..."But how often did we then, and do we now, think about the meaning behind the words? "...one nation. Under God. Indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."IndivisibleWhat does it mean to be indivisible? It's a question Denise Hamilton explores with intelligence, empathy and disarming approachability in her groundbreaking debut as an author."Indivisible: How to Forge Our Differences into a Stronger Future" grabs you by the throat on page one of the Prologue, and doesn't let you go.Through deft storytelling, research and personal reflection, Hamilton challenges us to re-think what it means to build diversity and inclusion in a polarized world where the words and the concepts are increasingly demonized. It's Not About a ChecklistHamilton is a nationally recognized workplace culture and DEI expert, and CEO of WatchHerWork, a digital learning platform for professional women. She has helped hundreds of companies recognize that meeting their DEI goals, if they still have them, is not about a checklist. It's about helping organizations figure out what their guiding principles are -- and whether they choose to act on them. It's about maximizing the gifts of everyone involved so that they and the organization can thrive.Beyond the WorkplaceWhat's so powerful about Hamilton's approach is that it applies far beyond the workplace into every aspect of our relationships, both professional and personal. The book is chock full of examples that allow you to see yourself in a given scenario, and then challenges you to re-examine your beliefs. It reveals the power within each of us to enact positive change, and gives us the tools to do so.Denise is a return guest who first shared her thoughtful perspective with the OVM community shortly after we launched. We couldn't be more proud to have Denise back to share her powerful new book. It's exactly what we need to help unify our fractured world.Support the show

Professional working mothers' mental health continues to be vulnerable in 2023. Consider findings from Harris Poll and CVS Health that show 42% of working mothers were diagnosed with anxiety/depression in 2022. That's compared to 28% of the general population and 25% of their coworkers without kids. These results are hardly surprising given the years that came before on top of the stressors that working mothers have faced for decades. Dr. Elizabeth Arleo mom of three, radiologist, and author of the new book FIRST, EAT YOUR FROG: And Other Pearls for Professional Working Mothers joins us today to share tips and strategies that working mothers can leverage to overcome challenges, manage overwhelm, and improve their happiness in and out of the workplace. Today we discuss… The lack of support for motherhood in the workplaceWhat might get in the way as a professional working motherHow we might have more time than we think we haveMaking time for your true priorities as you look at your time in weeks instead of daysTime-blocking your priorities to make sure they happen, including taking care of your personal wellnessThe benefits of doing the most important things firstPermission to choose things that are good enough vs. “perfect”How to become a “recovering perfectionist”For the show notes and all the links mentioned in today's episode, head to secretsofsupermom.com/147.Stay connected!www.secretsofsupermom.comSecrets of Supermom on FacebookSecrets of Supermom on Instagram
The Ambitious Nurse | RN, Nursing Career, Nursing Job Opportunities
In my daily conversations with nurses, I find more and more nurses saying that "I need to change things". There are nurses who are at the top of their pay scales and they need to decide what they should do next. Many others are still in the middle of it or are just starting out and say the same thing. What's the common denominator among those who are just starting out or in the middle? In all of these cases, perspective is the common denominator. It is our nature as ambitious nurses to always think about the next thing. A move may seem like the next step for us at times. A move, however, may not always be the best solution. The best answer sometimes is to stay in your current position and change the situation. During this episode, I discuss what you can do if you feel you are in a difficult situation but you enjoy your work. Let's navigate through the feelings of wanting to change your situation and see if we can find a solution for you to have more peace at work. Here are a few things we will tackle in this episode: Best steps to change your perspectiveHow the lack of balance between work and life can be a contributing factor in your bad situationThe importance of examining work relationshipsHow more work for you may be the better answerThe importance of stepping up and contributing your voice in the workplaceWhat you should make the ultimate priority when you are uneasy and not at peace at work Support the Show.Connect with Bonnie Meadows MSN, APRN, ACCNS-AG Website: The Ambitious Nurse Podcast Become an Ambitious Nurse Insider & sign up for my weekly newsletter here: Click the link here. Episode 17 Nate Ruban - Ergonomics to work without Pain!Nate Ruban was a former colleague of mine from Focus Fitness. He was an excellent strength and conditioning coach, as well as being an Athletic Therapist. After years of working at focus he started to look how his knowledge and experience could give him other opportunities in the realm of kinesiology, as it can be very tough for trainers to make a living. So he then found an opportunity to move out west to BC to work as an ergonomic advisor to workers on how to better work their jobs, safely and effectively without chronic pain. Ergonomics is the study of efficiency in the workplace environment, and when I came across this in school, it opened my mind to recognize how poorly set up we are. What's really interesting about this conversation is so many, if not all people, will have something about their work environment that could be causing micro traumas to their joints and body. Nate is able to uncover some great concepts that everyone should be aware ofWe discussThe difficulty of being an Athletic TherapistThe challenges of him moving his lifeThe differences and similarities between AT and being an ergonomic advisorWhat are the main mistakes made by people in their workplaceAre standing desks good? What other equipment should one invest in?Fundamental principles and tools to use to improve your workplaceWhat exercises should someone think about doing to help?Although ergonomics isn't the “sexy” study of human movement, it's actually one of if not the most relevant to most of our lives, as we spend most of the day doing our work. It's a great conversation and can really open up your mind to appreciate how to improve your workplace. An educator and science communicator, she applies her subject matter expertise to optimize human health and its impact on business leadership and planetary wellbeing. She strongly believes we can create a compassionate, equitable society where health is the default. As Chief Science Officer, Wisdom Labs focuses on solving stress, burnout, and loneliness in the workplace. Wisdom Labs aspires to build wiser workplaces using the science of mindfulness and to scale the skills of mental resilience, emotional intelligence, and compassionate leadership across organizations. She speaks about the connections between Health, Leadership, and Climate at Fortune 500 companies and global conferences, including Web Summit (Lisbon), Slush (Helsinki), Leade.rs (Paris), The Next Web (Amsterdam), Tech Open Air (Berlin), WELCOA (Wellness Council of America), Wisdom 2.0 (San Francisco), and ACLM (American College of Lifestyle Medicine) and Singularity University. In this episode, Dean Newlund and Parneet Pal discuss:Current trends in stress and burnout in the workplace Positive and Negative stress Why we should build resilience to stress in the workplaceWhat we can do to build strength to stress and avoid burnout Key Takeaways:Stress is every day, but it's dangerous to get used to it. Stress can be alleviated with a variety of solutions. By increasing your resilience to stress, you increase your tolerance and feel fewer adverse effects. Building resilience to stress has a great return of investment both to the organization and the individual. Encouraging people to take from their time to take care of themselves is not enough. Corporations need to find a way to incorporate mindfulness and other stress-relieving practices into their workers' schedules and overall workplace culture. Start meetings and corporate gatherings with gratitude and checking in on each other how each one is feeling. "The teams that were able to navigate adversity in skillful ways are the ones that took the time to say “Wait for a second before we get to the agenda, how are you?” even little moments of check-in can be compelling ways to engage into that kind of mindful awareness and listening" — Parneet Pal. Even before the pandemic, Americans were experiencing a devastating loneliness epidemic. We talk to UX designer-turned-connection coach Kat Vellos about the longing for deep and meaningful friendships that so many of us experience, and how we can build deeper, more substantial connections in our adult lives. Kat Vellos is a connection coach, speaker, facilitator, and author on a mission to transform loneliness and “platonic longing” into authentic human connection. She is the author of two books: We Should Get Together: The Secret to Cultivating Better Friendships, and Connected From Afar: A Guide for Staying Close When You're Far Away. When we think about connection, we often turn our lens outward, and it's really important first to look inside and say, what is it that you really need right now? And what is missing? If you can wave a magic wand and have the kind of connection you want, what would that look like, and how would it be integrated into your life? And the way you answer that question helps you determine what to do and where to go when you then turn your lens outward and seek to cultivate that connection externally with other people.—Kat Vellos, author of We Should Get TogetherWe talk about:The loneliness epidemic and how COVID changed connectionThe idea of “platonic longing” and the importance of identifying and talking about lonelinessHaving passion for your job versus following your curiosityHow organizations can invite and facilitate connection within the workplaceWhat we can do to focus on reconnection in our personal livesPlus: in this week’s You’ve Got This, Sara offers tips for how to foster joy. Where have you told yourself you shouldn't feel joyful? What is that costing you? What would be different in your life if you were operating from a place of joy? What would shift, what would change? What does it mean to be a good fit?Common things “culture fit” means but are not said (isms) (also reminder to Dan about department at Fidelity)AgeGenderRaceSexual orientationPhysical appearanceSocioeconomic statusExperienceThis can be a problem because it eitherMakes the team real homogeneous (everyone is similar)Or there is a tendency to tokenize peopleRe: personality testsI love personality tests, but if they are used as /the/ determining factor about a person then we are giving them too much powerMy MBTI is very accurate, a good tool to understanding why I am the way that I am, and also it is only part of who I amRe: Personality questions in an interviewIt’s an interview, so it already feels like a testBecause of the environment/general experience of the interview, everyone (including you) will be tempted to provide an answer they think you want to hear, vs. what is authenticRe: Lunch with a few pplThis is actually really nice, the issue is often power dynamics - who is able to attend the lunch has all of the say about the kind of fit the candidate isEven if the candidate is great for the job, it doesn’t mean everyone I. The office will wanna have lunch togetherHow to Do BetterHiring BodiesFirst: rememberIt takes time to really get to know peopleBecause there is inherently a limited time involved to get to know a candidate before hiring them, know that there is only so much you can really learn about a person in that timeBe clear about what you mean by “culture fit”Write them down and make sure you are comfortable with and intentional with themDo this practice as a teamMake sure that the list does not turn out to be you looking to hire another youUse personality tests, but only as a tool - not a deciding factor - and share your ownA general rule at PLLC is to always be willing to model the vulnerability you are asking of other peopleBe clear with yourself on why you are hoping to learn about the person with the personality test - beyond asking for just their number or letters, ask yourself, “what do I wish to learn about the candidate with this tool? How does what I want to know apply to the work culture?”Instead of asking things like, “do you speak up in meetings?” Use situational/preference questions - “tell me about a meeting you thought was really productive. How did you contribute?”Lunch/some other activity the team enjoys doingEnsure the team members this person will work most closely with can go to the lunchNot too large of a crowd - maybe 4-5 peopleTry to find a place where the tables are round so that not only a few people are able to have a conversation (Dan hates rectangle tables)Should be obvious, but pay for the candidates’ lunch!Ensure a curated set of people who will work closely with the candidate if hired have some time to spend with themHear everyone’s input, trust your gut, come to consensus as a groupApplicantAll of the advice above, + remember that you are looking for the right culture fit for yourself as wellThink of questions you can ask that will give you clues to day to day life in this workplaceWhat are the expectations around flexible work time?Listen for:needing to submit time, “special occasions,” as needed, etc. and ask follow up questiosWhat is the standard cadence of team meetings?Listen for: how often, how they are scheduled, what is expected in each meetingHow do we keep each other informed of work projects?Listen for: formal tools (what’s included/involved: biweekly check-in example)What is your decision making process like?Listen for: “when we are told XYZ by another department,” reactivity vs. strategic planning (ex “I just want to do more”)Notice power dynamicsDoes everyone you are speaking appear comfortable? Send me an e-mail or a DM on Instagram and I’ll collect them for a possible Part 2 of this episode!Send an e-mail Send a DMToday’s conversation might just shift the way you experience the world. That’s what it did for me. Fabia is a Cyclical Living and Menstruality Expert, Yoga Teacher, Economist and is currently also studying Psychology and Religious Studies at the University of Zürich. A big piece of Fabia’s work is about seeing the menstrual cycle as the gift that it truly is. In today’s conversation we dive deep into what that means and so much more. Some of the things that we talk about are: How we can integrate cycle awareness into what can feel like a very masculine world Practicing menstrual awareness at the workplaceWhat the “four seasons” of the menstrual cycle are and how you can apply this awareness to your daily life How we can apply this wisdom to our creative process & projects What a “feminine” yoga practice looks like Fabia is an absolute joy to listen to and shares about this topic with so much wisdom and humor. One of the things that I love about Fabia’s work is that she makes cycle awareness feel so accessible. I walked away from this conversation feeling like I could easily start applying some of the concepts into my daily life. “I hope that we can all become more compassionate and empathetic towards other ways of thinking.”Simon Smith, ACESimon Smith, ACE is an award-winning editor whose most recent credits are the HBO series Chernobyl and the Disney+ series Star Wars: Andor. While Simon has been on many podcasts talking about his successful work as an editor, our conversation instead centers around neurodiversity in the workplace. Why? Because it was only recently that Simon was diagnosed as an adult with autism. Not only does Simon embrace his autism, he considers it to be one of his greatest assets when it comes to his successful career as an editor, and this is a mindset he inspires us all to adopt. Whether it's mental, physical, circumstantial, noticeable to others or just to you, each and every one of us has some form of disability. No matter the disability that may be holding you back in your life, this conversation will give you the tools and inspiration you need to reframe your obstacles and transform them into your superpowers. It's all about perspective. In this conversation, Simon shares with us that autism is nothing more than a difference in the way the mind works, and we discuss the importance of embracing all forms of neurodiversity in the workplace such that we can utilize everyone's value.
