On this episode Johanna Guevara of Dropping Seeds joins Rebecca to discuss the ways that we can relate to plants and remember ancestral survival skills and healing practices. Johanna shares her personal journey of Indigenizing her family structure, homeschooling her children, and cultivating herbal medicine. Johanna inspires us to be held by nature and in rooted relationships even in fast-paced urban settings like Brooklyn or Boston. As a last generation Colombian, her upbringing under the 7 Train in Queens, NYC, was mostly in Spanish. As with many Central, South American and Caribbean countries, both of her Grandmothers were influential and always had a plant for every ailment. From very young, Johanna's passion was creating. Her drive and determination lead her to graduate with a BFA from Parsons School of Design, only a couple months before Sept. 11. This global event would not only change the course of history but also propel her freelance design career into a full service branding studio with clients like Time Inc., CUNY, Afropunk, Department of Education, HighTimes and Sony Japan. In 2008, during the collapse of the housing bubble which led to the Great Recession, she closed up her design studio and decided to travel the world with her then partner SirRoan. These travels very synchronistically turned into studies of sacred plant medicine, Ayurveda & Curanderismo with different masters from Brazil to New Mexico to heal personal emotional traumas. Johanna has also received certification in Reiki Level 2, Integrated Energy Technique Advanced , a Wasteskun Meztli Canada Moon Dancer and a Vision Quester in Atlantida, Colombia.
On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Tim Smith (The Lickerish Quartet, Sheryl Crow, Umajets, Jellyfish, etc.). Ex-Jellyfish members Roger Joseph Manning Jr. (Beck, Air, Cheap Trick, Imperial Drag), Tim Smith (Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, The Finn Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Umajets) and Eric Dover (Imperial Drag, Slash's Snakepit, Alice Cooper, Sextus)—released their third and final child, Threesome Volume 3, May 20, 2022 on Stranger Danger Records and Tapes, distributed by Burnside and the Orchard in the U.S. and by Lojinx in the U.K. and Europe. It's available now on digital outlets and on the band's official website. Threesome Volume 3 makes its way into the world via remote writing, recording, and mixing. The challenges we've all faced these last years forced Roger, Eric and Tim to finalize this EP through a series of emails, and phone calls. Home recording studios were redesigned and outfitted to complete the final four songs that were originally written together in 2017. Threesome Volume 3 completes the trilogy started with the release of Threesome Volume 1 in 2020, which was called a “masterpiece” by many critics and fans alike. Threesome Volume 2 was released in early 2021, and its first single, “Snollygoster Goon,” showed another side of the band and its versatility as writers, singers and musicians. “Fortunately,” the EP's first single and video, is a bouncy tune sung by Tim Smith that drips with the signature harmonies and melodic structures The Lickerish Quartet have been known for, alongside a deeper, darker lyric that speaks to the universal ideas of heaven, hell, dogma and belief. As a co-write with their executive producer, Adam W. James, Eric's slide guitar soloing, Roger's keyboards and string arrangement, and Tim's melodic bass lines combine for the listener to perhaps harken back to early FM radio hits of the ‘70s. “New Days” was released as the second single and video on April 22. As sung by Roger, it's a tale of remembering the past with the longing psychedelic hope of the future. Eric's lyric touches pastoral images of optimistic youth and shaping moments with the desire to keep moving forward, onward, and probably westward. Lush reverb guitars, grooving bass and drums with evolving vocal harmonies celebrate the hope we all share for new beginnings. “You All Alone” starts with a jarring string ensemble as Eric's lead vocal then weaves a story of obsession and pursuit. Jagged drums and bass, razor wire guitars and another excellent string arrangement by Roger leads our hero towards satisfaction, but at what cost? Who is the hunter, and who is the hunted? “In The Meantime” rounds out the EP. Sung by Tim, the song ponders where do YOU go when you are feeling the crush of a world you no longer recognize? Topical, but also timeless, “In The Meantime” proffers to float rather than sink or swim. The theme of burying down deep is married to a pulsing, shouting wall of guitar sound and fury, but with a non-violent narrative. Those most precious things that bring us happiness--to love someone, do something, or have something to hope for--are sung about with fearlessness. They continue to engage with their fans via their website and “Experiences”--a series of collaborative connections of writing together with folks, performing on songs submitted to the band, personalized songs and messages, lessons in songwriting and production, as well as numerous Zoom-hosted breakdowns of their songs in-studio followed by a Q&A with the fans about the process, choices made, and equipment used to create their music. Meanwhile, Sony Japan recently partnered with them to release all three EPs on June 29, as a collection entitled Fables From Fearless Heights, which will include two previously unheard cover songs, as well as a special “best of” vinyl LP in that region. Sherry and Tim chat about The Lickerish Quartet's new EP and much more! Please visit thelickerishquartet.com for more information.

Since so much groundbreaking sound work is being created in the world of gaming these days, we've decided to dedicate the next few episodes of this podcast to some of the superstars behind your favorite new video games. Continuing that ongoing coverage, today our colleague Alistair Hirst sits down with the sound team behind "Ghost of Tsushima," a giant open world Samurai action game set in feudal Japan. The team took painstaking steps to give players as authentic and immersive an experience as possible. "We did an immense amount of research. Every single team did, because we're really having to learn this entire historical time period. It really happened, it really existed. And while taking creative liberties where necessary, we still wanted to do the time period and the content justice... It was just constant research and going out in the field and recording. We employed our team at Sony Japan studio... to go record throughout the main island of Japan, to capture a lot of ambience for us. And all of these things really helped inform how the game was going to sound." — Brad Meyer, Audio Director, "Ghost of Tsushima" Be sure to check out https://www.playstation.com/en-us/games/ghost-of-tsushima/ ("Ghost of Tsushima," available now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5). All of the Day is back again! Setzer got a little sickly so it's just Derek and Cheston this week. The boys spend a lot of time breaking down what was a pretty middling week from Sony: from a former exclusive title launching day one on Microsoft's game pass to more Sony Japan departures. They also squeeze more talk about the PS3/Vita/PSP store closing. Wow! On the gaming side, this week Derek mostly talks about It Takes Two but also sneaks in a teensy bit of Monster Hunter Rise talk. Cheston is almost done with Mario 3D World and decided to wash the taste of that down with some Sam and Max Save the World remastered. They changed some dialogue but he seems to dig it so whatever! Few countries exercise such world-wide fascination while being as little understood outside their own borders as Japan. Christopher Harding, author of The Japanese: A History In 20 Lives, talks to Ros Taylor about the key figures who shaped Japan over the centuries, from princesses and samurai to pop culture visionaries.“A British delegate who visited Japan in the 1990s said ‘If this is a recession, then I want one'”“Japan needs more babies, more immigrants, more robots.”“People fall in love with some element of Japan… but we don't have a joined up sense of Japanese history.”Presented by Ros Taylor. Welcome to yet another episode of The SegaGuys RetroPod! On this weeks show, James & Dan take another trip into SEGA's past, to a moment which proved pivotal in the direction the gaming industry would take. In 1993, SEGA of America led by Tom Kalinske came close to forging a deal with Sony which would see the two Japanese tech giants join forces, creating the proverbial uber console and in doing so alter the course of both companies making them unrecognisable today. As fate would have it, SEGA of Japan led by Hayao Nakayama, vetoed the deal, citing that Sony were not experienced enough in the gaming field and therefore not worthy partners. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Join us as we take a step by step look at just how the future could have turned out... and what we would have lost had the deal taken place, asking the ultimate question: would YOU change any of how things went with both SEGA and Sony? Enjoy the show.

This week, Greg, Toby and Sean discuss Sekiro...again... before moving on to talk about the restructuring at Sony Japan Studio. Is this a mistake or a potential boon for the Japanese indie game marker? We also talk the announcements at this week's PlayStation State of Play and whether there's such a thing as too much Final Fantasy VII. Finally, we chat about our most anticipated games for March 2021. All of this is topped off with a bloody good quiz and our usual brand of stupidity. On this episode of Video Games 2 the MAX hosts Sean Garmer and Marc Morrison are joined by Jens Dietrich in discussing various things. Firstly, Marc and Jens have both been playing Persona 5 Strikers. So, Sean asks questions and they provide answers to gameplay aspects, exploring dungeons if playing the original Persona 5 is required, how much does the game varies from typical Musou gameplay, and much more. After that, everyone gets into the latest Pokemon news with a Pre-Pokemon day direct that showed off more on New Pokemon Snap and delivered on the rumored Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes featuring a Chibi art style similar to the one used in the Link’s Awakening remake from last year. There was also a big surprise in Pokemon Legends Araceus. Featuring an entire open-world Pokemon game for the first time using a past version of the Sinnoh region. Sean is very much excited and wonders if a Nintendo Switch Pro launch is connected to it. Sony also had a State of Play and showed off new gameplay of Returnal and Kena: Bridge of Spirits. While also providing a vehicle for the SIFU announcement and the big one is the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade which is not only a PlayStation 5 upgrade with the usual inclusions but also adds DLC featuring Yuffie. The guys discuss everything involving the announcement and the ensuing controversy after it was announced the PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake would be part of the March 2021 PlayStation Plus lineup. Should you be provided an upgrade path with the PS Plus version? Or is Square-Enix right in doing it their way? Plus, more Final Fantasy mobile titles were announced too, including one that goes through the entirety of the Final Fantasy VII series of games. Would this finally get Jens to play a mobile game? Also discussed in the episode: The shuttering of Anthem and Sony Japan studio, Amazon Luna boss Marc Whitten leaving for Unity, PSVR 2 in development, more Sony games coming to PC, Dragon Age 4 dropping multiplayer, and more. While we're totally happy with playing Borderlands 2 forever, we can't help but wonder (again) what actually happened to The Last Guardian. This week Don, Mike and Joseph do the usual: news, reviews, get Derailed, etc… Layoffs at Sony Japan eventually lead us to talking about other things that are wrong—and not so wrong—with Japanese game development. O Last Guardian, where art thou? This week's intro/outro music: Doomsday - Nero
An interview with MAKOTO SASA, the producer and director of FIRE UNDER THE SNOW - a look at the life of Tibetan monk Palden Gyatso, who spent 33 years in prison as his nation was seized by China. Palden Gyatso, a Buddhist monk since childhood, was arrested by the Chinese Communist Army in 1959. He was tortured, starved and sentenced to hard labor. He watched his nation and culture destroyed, his teachers, friends and family displaced, jailed or killed under Chinese occupation. Fire Under the Snow reaches back to Palden's birth in 1933 and follows him through the Orwellian nightmare that began with the Chinese invasion. The film investigates the basis of Palden's resilience. He claims that faith in Buddhism helped him survive the 33 years of his imprisonment. While imprisoned, the mere existence of the Dalai Lama was a beacon of hope to Palden and fellow prisoners-of-conscience. They dreamed of being released from their torment and delivered into his open arms. Today, the Dalai Lama and his supporters advance the idea of a "mutually beneficial" autonomy within China, an idea generated from Buddhist philosophy. Makoto Sasa has made several short documentaries, worked as assistant editor for the 35mm features Going Under (2004) starring Roger Rees, and LOVE (2005). Recently, she has been directing and editing several documentaries for SONY Japan's broadband streaming video website World Event Village.
