On this episode of Analog Smile, Sherry speaks with Stefanie Ku and Conrad Schuman of Beautiful Machines. The genesis of electronic duo Beautiful Machines' new single "Baum Baum,” began in Berlin one winter on a three-month writing hiatus, during which time, Stefanie Ku and Conrad Schuman of the duo visited the famed Hansa Studios (Bowie, U2, Iggy Pop, Nick Cave, Depeche Mode). The idea for the song came about when Conrad learned of the heart-wrenching, ever present news that there were thousands of unexploded “bombs” still posing a potentially catastrophic tragedy in the city, left over from World War II. As time continued on with an inevitable return to nature and peace, however, the city has been transformed; for instance imagine a “tree” breaking through the ground of a concrete jungle from a bombed-out city, life is starting anew. As ‘Baum' translates to “tree” in German, the song title itself serves as a play on words, while at the same time the pounding boom boom techno bass resonating through club walls served as a sonic onomatopoeia to this track and in a sense offering a kind of code to decipher. Baum Baum" follows their previous album singles “Control” and “Survive”. An act of synthesis that blends technology with art, the digital with the humane, Singularity is not only an album, but it's also an experience - a continually updating project that spans music, visuals, and performance. On one level, it's sparkling synth pop in line with everyone from Giorgio Moroder to The Human League, Nine Inch Nails to Robyn. On another, it's a total art experience, inspired by interstellar wanderings through the cosmic realms of Kraftwerk and Isaac Asimov. "Baum Baum'' is out now via Republic of Music. Singularity will be released Summer 2022. Sherry, Conrad, and Stefanie chat about their music, upcoming projects, technology, and much more! Check out beautifulmachines.space for details.

After listening to Alex Ebert's fantastic presentation ‘Dead Cool' at the Stoa we thought we would invite Alex, who like Alexander Bard, is a pop star turned philosopher for a discussion on ‘The Philosophy of Cool'. What is cool in the age of attentionalism? What is fake cool and what is real cool? How is cool related to Réne Girard's theories of mimetic desire. Originally part of the Sweeny vs Bard podcast, we thought it exemplified a lively round table and should be part of the Strange Attractor series. After all ‘cool' is a strange attractor and mysterious enough to merit a serious conversation. One of the coolest (in the sense of ‘most awesome') conversations so far. Part 2 coming soon. Alex Ebert is an erstwhile multiplatinum songwriter and Golden Globe-winning film composer now taking up philosophy in New Orleans. He is currently finishing his first book, Dead Cool, an analysis of sociodynamics and status anxiety in the age of Cool. Alexander Bard: Alexander Bard is a Swedish author, lecturer, artist, songwriter, music producer, TV personality, philosopher and political activist, and one of the founders of the Syntheist movement along with his co-author Jan Söderqvist. His books include “The Futurica Trilogy”, “Digital Libido” & “Syntheism”. Thomas Hamelryck is a Lecturer and Researcher at the Bioinformatics Centre at the University of Copenhagen Biocenter. His academic research interests revolve around Machine learning, Bayesian statistics, Protein Structure Prediction, Probabilistic Programming, Deep Learning. He is also an enthusiast of Réne Girard, and denies all rumours that he was once the keyboard player for Depeche Mode. Andrew Sweeny: Andrew Sweeny is a writer, editor, blogger, Youtuber, published poet, podcaster, musician, and teacher. He has worked as a touring musician and put out several albums, published a book of poetry, and animated two popular podcasts and a philosophical blog on Medium and now on Parallax. A critique of woke culture and political correctness and how to live in a post woke future. Orsolya Bajusz concludes by telling us: ‘Don't be a doormat, don't be a pillar saint!'. Greg Kaminski is a man of gravity, learning, and dedication. In our wonderful two hour conversation, the creator of the podcast ‘Occult of Personality’ and author of the new book ‘Pronaos: Reflections on the Preliminary Practices of Buddhist Tantra from a Western Perspective’, shared something fantastic: that a particular series of preliminary practices in Buddhist Tantra known as ngondro is now openly available to people in the west, in glorious and poetic english—in full and unabashed form. These practices, which are usually associated with traditional Tibetan Buddhism and thought to be too arcane, too difficult, and too ‘eastern’, can now be done by westerners. Just ping brother Greg and he will set you up here: https://www.ngondro.org/ https://www.tanagana.com/welcome Ok, let me slow down here. The Tantric path gives us a Parallax or another view of reality. A description of the 9 vehicles of Buddhism including Tantra, comparing the Tantric approach with Western ‘eventological’ religion and Zoroastrianism. Note: This talk is shorter than usual because the depth of this topic requires at least 3 more talks, and this might be easier to digest. But it is still full of our usual mischievous fun and interruption of the banal. Tammy Peterson grew up in the Canadian prairies (Fairview, Alberta) on a plateau she called ‘the top of the world’; she now lives in Toronto, Canada. She is a mother of two, a massage therapist, an artist, and the wife of the famous author and controversial professor Jordan Peterson. She is also a great storyteller with a subtle sense of humor, and is a profoundly wise person, I discovered in this interview. I spoke to her about her near-death experience and various trials and tribulations she endured over the past couple years and her subsequent spiritual ‘rebirth’ and decision to serve God as a result. She expressed gratitude for her husband’s work and serving him during his whirlwind world tour, but also trying to find meaning beyond her maternal role. Her big question during the tour was: 'what am I doing here'? Today she seems to have answered this question pretty definitively. Not only has she found new meaning and spiritual direction in her life, but she has also rediscovered her love for painting. Tammy Peterson is now a pretty cool grandmother and is speaking out fearlessly on zoom thanks to the deal she made with God! I hope she will be an important voice alongside her husband in the future. We need more matriarchs like her! After what John Vervaeke has called The Meaning Crisis we need to reinvent soul, faith, virtue, dialogue—all the perennial notions. An amazing three way conversation with John and Chris circling around the idea of the soul, where John suggests we creatively re-invent and rediscover soul. John Vervaeke is a professor at the University of Toronto and the creator of the popular online YouTube Series ‘Awakening from The Meaning Crisis’, which is a rich feast of cognitive science, philosophy, religion, and the history of ideas. What makes Vervaeke special in my opinion is the breadth of his work, but his courage descend the ivory tower and talk to people ‘on the street’—and to exemplify his ideas. His hero is Socrates, and he embodies the living dialogue and courage that Socrates represents. I was first introduced to Christopher Mastropietro by Peter Limberg for his series on Letter.com, 'impossible conversations'. Our first 'impossible conversation can be found here’: https://letter.wiki/conversation/232. Christopher is John Vervaeke’s writing and research partner and co-author of ‘Zombies in Western Culture: A Twentieth Century Crisis’. A great book which I have used for undergraduate classes in Paris. Fabrice Midal is hugely popular in the Francophone world with a best selling book that has been translated as ‘The French Art of Not giving a fuck’—but relatively unknown elsewhere. He is also the author of about twenty other books, which include a biography of Chogyam Trungpa, and various books about philosophy, art, poetry, chivalry and meditation. He is also the founder of a unique school of meditation called ‘L’École occidentale de méditation’—which teaches not just traditional buddhist meditation and texts, but also has a strong emphasis on western philosophy, poetry, and the arts in general. I’ve known Fabrice for many years and he has taught me many things, and I have always wished that something like his school were available in other countries. L’École occidentale de méditation is a good example of what is called in German ‘bildung’ where philosophy and mediation are linked in creating movements that have the potential to change society as a whole. Some of my listeners in the contemporary bildung movement could learn a great deal from Fabrice’s efforts and genius in my opinion. In this wide ranging discussion we talked mostly about meditation and how meditation can be the ground for genuine renaissance in all areas of society, rather than merely a ‘technique’ for inner calm—which, in Fabrice’s view is a gross distortion of its origin, meaning and purpose. Working Class Audio Session #114 with Monte Vallier!!! Monte Vallier grew up in the Bay Area and launched his musical career by dropping out of high school and moving to London with his band Half Church who he played bass with. After making a record and playing tons of gigs with bands such as The Fall, Echo and the Bunnymen, and PIL,  the band called it quits in 1986. After interning at The music annex and Coast Recorders (Bay Area) Monte built his own studio with engineer Gibbs Chapman that was destroyed in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake . It was that same year that Monte started working with the band Swell as a bass player. They Made 5 albums and toured extensively in the 90’s and eventually signed to Rick Rubin’s Def American label in 1993. They made all their our own records starting with a Tascam 38 but then took all the recording advances and bought more gear. They built studios in LA and NYC and in various places in SF to make the records. Monte says he truly learned how to a make a proper record while working with Swell. After Monte left Swell he got busy by producing other people, partnered with Marc Capelle to pursue commercial composition, film scoring, and corporate music and audio post , formed Jet Black Crayon with Tommy Guerrero and toured a bit, making 3 albums then working on 9 solo records for Tommy. Eventually Monte partnered with Jamie Kahn and Nathan Harlow to create a recording space in San Francisco in 2006.  Monte has worked with many bands and solo artists including,  Tommy Guerrero, Wax Idols, Mark Eitzel, Sean Hayes, Oxbow, Chuck Dukowski and Blackface, Weekend, Mall Walk, Houses of Heaven, Never Young, Wild Moth, Hariguem Zaboy, Terry Malts, The Mattson 2, Young Prisms, Wax Idols, Jet Black Crayon, The Mumlers.
