This week's show is sponsored by: EPIC-MRA Public Opinion Research MIRS News Fulton Fish Market This week on ""A Republic, If You Can Keep It" Republicans everywhere are reassessing after stumbling in a couple of Florida special elections that should have been slam dunks, and losing a State Supreme Court election in a Wisconsin landslide A day later by a stunningly trade war launched by the worst graduate in the history of the Wharton School of Economics. There was a Standing-Room-Only crowd as Democrats headlined a Town Hall in the heart of Macomb County, an event taking full aim at MIA Congressman John James. Last week, it was the most unqualified national security team ever assembled Signaling its stunningly consistent ineptness, with the revelation that at least one of them is conducting official business on Gmail. This week, it's RFK Jr. who, by advocating quack medicine while firing actual real scientists, accelerates a growing measles outbreak that's spreading from ground ZERO in Texas. Homeland Security ineptly condemns people to an indefinite stay in an El Salvador hell hole with no proof they've done anything wrong. And the U.S. Senate race has its first major candidate. We talk with state Senator Mallory McMorrow The first announced candidate for U.S. Senator is state Senator Mallory McMorrow. She exploded into the national spotlight in 2024 after an emotional response to very public personal attacks on her by Republican state Senator Lana Theis went viral. She is an ardent supporter of policies protecting reproductive rights, empowering local communities, and making Michigan a business- and family-friendly state. McMorrow is the Senate Majority Whip, serving her second term in the Michigan Senate. Prior to her election to the Senate she worked for more than a decade in product design, media and advertising with companies like Mazda, Mattel, Gawker Media, Hearst and other global brands. McMorrow hit the ground running during her first term in the Michigan Senate, winning policy changes such as ending Michigan's tampon tax, helping struggling businesses during the coronavirus pandemic, and protecting certain individuals (including domestic violence survivors) by creating an address confidentiality program. She earned her bachelor's degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame and resides in Royal Oak with her husband, Ray, their daughter, Noa, and their rescue dog, Detroit. At 38, she is the youngest person on the list of potential Senate candidates in either party. Here's episode 83 of Michigan's premier progressive podcast! Salon columnist Amanda Marcotte spends a few minutes talking with Pat about the Christian Nationalist Movement, and its ultimate goal of not just getting Dear Leader Trump back into power, but of ending religious freedom for all. Ms. Marcotte's written extensively on how Christian Nationalists are trying to defund public schools, public libraries, attacking the nation's democratic institutions, attacking abortion rights and women's health care, and also how this movement really is trying to end religious liberty in this country. And they'll do it through violence if need be. Ms. Marcotte also has a newsletter called, "Standing Room Only." So, please, subscribe to her newsletter! And thank you to Amanda for being on this week! The opening segment discusses how Dear Leader is once again visiting Michigan next week, but it doesn't appear he'll show his supposed support for union workers by speaking at a non-union business this time! No, he's a bit lazy this time as he'll speak at a Saginaw airplane hanger. But regardless of what he does, his White Christian Nationalists will back him because they see him as their best chance to enact their hateful agenda.  The "Last Call" shows once again how Michigan Republicans just can't let go of their anger and disdain for union workers. They're calling for a restoration of Right To Work For Less after Democrats repealed that destructive law last year. Combine that with the UAW victories against the Big Three Detroit automakers last Fall, and the stunning UAW win at a Volkswagen plant in Tennessee, workers are beginning to make some significant strides against management.  The pendulum is turning in the favor of workers , and Republicans will do whatever it takes to thwart that progress. Justin and Bec take a closer listen to Elvis' sessions from March 1972 at RCA Studio C in Hollywood, which gave us iconic hits like "Burning Love," "Always on My Mind" and "Separate Ways" along with several cuts relegated to B-sides and later LPs. They also ponder what might have been, looking at the cancelled 1972 album "Standing Room Only," that would have been largely comprised of this studio material mixed with live tracks from a Vegas engagement earlier that year. Bec is in the hotseat for a round of Elvis trivia early in the episode, then for Song of the Week, she picks the deep cut "I Want You With Me" from 1961's "Something for Everybody" while Justin digs into "I've Got Confidence" from a different 1972 album, "He Touched Me"! Prepare ye the way of the Lord! In today's Bible reading from Matthew 3, we read about a rock star preacher named John the Baptist. Long hair. Cool clothes. Trendy diet. Outdoor venue. Standing Room Only. John the Baptist is a pivotal character in the Bible story, and one whose example and message we consider every year around this time, at least, those of us who observe the season of Advent in the church calendar. We are getting ready, after all. Ready for Christmas. Ready for Christ to come into our hearts. Ready for Christ to come again.Today's message reminds us that the coming of the kingdom of God is good news for everyone. That the Holy Spirit gathers and unites us in the waters of Baptism. And John the Baptist issues the challenge to bear good fruit AND burn the chaff. Let's unpack all that as we open our Bibles to Matthew 3:1-12.Matthew 3:1-12In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” 3 This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:“A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord,    make straight paths for him.'”4 John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey. 5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.11 “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”This is the word of God. Sisters and brothers, grace to you, and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Support the show

Synopsis On today's date in 1940, the “Standing Room Only” signs went up early as a crowd of 23,000 stormed the Hollywood Bowl to hear the great Paul Robeson perform. On the program was Earl Robinson's “Ballad for Americans,” a work for solo voice and orchestra that was for a time one of the most popular musical works in America. Earl Robinson had studied with Copland, and in 1934 had joined the Federal Theater Project. His “Ballad for Americans” quickly became a popular concert hall vehicle for Paul Robeson, and, in election year 1940, it was even performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Republican Party's National Convention. Robeson made a famous recording of the work, but nowadays “Ballad for Americans” is seldom, if ever, heard or performed. Also on the Hollywood Bowl's program for July 23, 1940, was the first complete West Coast performance of William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1, subtitled the “Afro-American Symphony” by its composer. Still had settled in Los Angeles to work for the film industry, but by 1940 had also achieved fame as the country's foremost African-American composer of concert music. Unlike “Ballad for Americans,” the “Afro American Symphony” still shows up on concert programs these days. Jonathan Fa'afetai Lemalu is a New Zealand bass baritone opera singer. Born to Samoan parents who had emigrated to New Zealand, he was educated in Dunedin. He studied both Law and Music at the University of Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws.  Jonathan Lemalu has spent the last 5 months preparing an exciting and innovative project, in association with New Zealand's Arts Foundation and Boosted – Aotearoa’s only crowdfunding platform dedicated for the arts.    In the absence of more than 8 months of opera work cancelled due to COVID-19, Jonathan created his own work opportunity.  'Before And After Summer' is a series of 4 biographical episodes detailing his musical journey from a 10yr old Dunedin chorister to a Grammy award winning operatic bass on the international stage, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. With 17 specifically chosen songs and arias as well as interviews and Q&A, personally scripted and recently recorded in London, Jon has created more than 2 hours of rare, unique insight and candid commentary into his journey in words and song.  You can listen to Jon's recent RNZ interview with Standing Room Only which captures the essence of this project. The 4 part series will be screened on Boosted LIVE over the next month on Jon's Boosted crowdfunding page, which launched on Monday 9 November. During each of the four consecutive weeks his crowdfunding page is live, the relevant episode will be available to watch – the first launching this Friday 13 November.  For these episodes and his campaign, Jon is crowdfunding to raise an initial target of $20,000 NZD. As Boosted is an all-or-nothing platform, he needs to reach this full total by Thursday 10 December to receive the funds, otherwise all donations will be immediately refunded. In his words, it is both exciting and nerving at the same time - a surprisingly similar adrenalin rush to singing in the theatres and opera houses of the world! Turn your scars into your superpower! ***** Scott St. Patrick discusses his experience as an actor recently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). He speaks about how it has affected him as an actor and shifted his outlook on life.  ABOUT SCOTT: Scott St. Patrick is an American writer and actor from Westchester, NY. Classically trained, Scott has studied with such stalwarts in theatre like Deena Levy, Trudy Steibl, and Rochelle Oliver at HB Studios. His passion and studies have led him to work with major repertoire theatres on and off Broadway; including starring in the smash faith based production, “Laid Off” at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2009, Scott has appeared in a variety of commercials, Independent films, and theatre productions. However, his staple has been the production of his spellbinding, one-man play, “Act God” which was executive produced by mentor and friend Don B. Welch.  In addition to acting, Scott has a strong passion for bringing awareness to social issues through his writing. The recent shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, two black men shot and killed by law enforcement in 2016, prompted Scott to write the controversial play Minority Report in September of 2016. Not only was the show well received (Standing Room Only) but it is currently being used by several colleges and universities as a part of their diversity initiatives.    Connect with Scott at: https://www.instagram.com/scottstpatrick/ --- #IveGotScarsBaby #MS #MultipleSclerosis *Free Gift for You: "3 Ways to Turn Your Scars Into Your Superpower":  https://witty-composer-7238.ck.page/974806764e Check out Audra's Music video “Scars”:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9omSfX-IMkE For Coaching Inquiries: https://www.audrabryant.com/products Connect with Audra at: Website: https://www.audrabryant.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ivegotscarsbaby and        https://www.instagram.com/audraabryant Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/IveGotScarsBabyShow  Twitter: https://twitter.com/AudraABryant  --- ABOUT AUDRA: Audra was burned at a year and a half, had six surgeries between the ages of 2 and 16, and did not look at herself in the mirror until she was 25 years old. Because of her experience, Audra wrote her song “Scars”, created the I've Got Scars Baby! Podcast and has been performing and holding personal empowerment workshops across the country. From Detroit native to Los Angeles artist and producer, Audra has also performed at such venues as the Disney Music Hall (LA), The Kennedy Center (Washington DC), The World Children's Festival of Theatre (Copenhagen, Denmark), The House of Blues Sunset (LA) and The Comedy Store (LA), Laugh Factory (LA) and The Comedy Union (LA). Among those she thanked were her cousins whose experences of violence and gang culture were woven into her novel about two orphaned and separated Māori brothers. The Award judges praised Auē for its rawness and sadness, and its insights into the minds of children and young men.  The Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize for Fiction comes with a $55,000 award which Becky Manawatu hopes will allow her to keep writing. Halfway Home.   The seventh-season episode "Shattered" offers a tiny glimpse into one possible future for the Voyager crew, 17 years into the future. If the events of the Voyager series finale "Endgame" had not occurred, presumably Voyager would have continued its long trek back to the Alpha Quadrant over a period of 75 years. In that time, there would naturally be changes aboard Voyager as crew members age, retire, or pass away, and with younger officers rising through the ranks to take their place. In this episode of To The Journey, hosts Zachary Fruhling and Suzanne Williamson discuss other possible futures for Voyager, 30 years into the journey and halfway home. Who would the captain of Voyager be after 30 years? What would the command structure be like? Who would the senior officers and department heads be? How would the careers of junior officers and the children born aboard Voyager develop over 30 years? And would there be any major changes to Voyager itself or the premise of the series as a whole? A Chorus Line” ergattern will. There’s no Business like Imbissnes”. Nun musste eine richtige Herausforderung her. Mal sehn, was danach kommt. Irgendwas bleibt vielleicht doch.

Appearing on stages from accompanying noted poets from HBO's Def Poetry Jam, to  a Special Demand, Standing Room Only headliner for the Spotlight on Jazz & Poetry Jazz Festival (Philly, PA), to sharing the bill and stage with noted artists such as the critically acclaimed Jazz pianist Brian O'Neal(KEM),and Grammy award winning trumpeter Sean Jones,Neo's sharp wit, smart lyrics/poems, and 5 octave range of sultry to powerhouse vocals have brought validated her as “a little something extra” in the field of Spoken Word/NeoSoul-Jazz.  In short, this 2 time nominee for Best Spoken Word Artist for the Ohio Hip Hop Awards (2010-2011) has honed her skills to the point of giving nothing less than stellar performances in every venue she has found herself in, even walking away with top honors in several local, state, and multi-state/country poetry “slams”.  Her lyrical prowess is equal to her vocal dexterity as she peppers her spoken word pieces with a higher level of language ($120 words as she is teased), and other languages when applicable.  Through her writings Neo has set a goal to be the poet for the sophisticated ear as well as the lover of raw street poetry.  To her credit, she is a “Clean Speak” – meaning profanity is not the norm for her material.  This has given her the ability to perform on college platforms as the first Spoken Word artist to implement and host an open mic for the National Society of Black Engineers' National Conference, to several Christian organizations major conferences. Her project broaches every subject from God to sex without requiring a warning label.. but don't be misguided.
