This week, on the last In Between Episode, we summarize the most notable films in the history of Black Horror. We discuss the how depictions of Black individuals in horror films has reflected discriminatory views, has attempted to change views, and has set standards for filmmakers throughout time. The films discussed, starting with Birth of a Nation in 1915 and ending with Us in 2019, evidence how long and arduous the battle has been for Black individuals to be represented accurately in horror as well as to be given the platform to contribute creatively to horror culture. Finally, this episode serves as a reminder to be seek your own implicit biases and be alert for biases in our own communities (particularly in metal and horror-focused ones) that need to be challenged, even where it might not seem relevant. This artistic power couple has been together for nine years and married for over two. Andrew works in production and is the guitarist for the Erie-local, symphonic death metal band, Perdition. Victoria is an alternative makeup artist and vlogger. Throughout the episode, the couple explains the evolution of the passion for their crafts and the darker side of things into elaborate performance art that fosters strong connections between people who tend to live “against the grain.” Later, both artists discuss their inspiration and what makes their styles individual from those who aren’t so fond of the dark side. In addition, they explain the practices that allow them to work well together, as creators and as significant others. Of course, to wrap up our discussion, we explore the couple’s favorite horror films. Death is a funny thing, we either let it consume us or we use it as motivation to fully start to live. In the wake of guitarist Tom Searle's untimely loss to skin cancer in 2016 the boys of British metalcore juggernauts Architects took his death and managed to craft one HELL of an album in his remembrance! Easily my favorite album of the year I discuss Architect's eighth album Holy Hell in Episode 15 of The In Between! Want to help make HB a better podcast than ever imaginable!?
