This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Whoop, and JOOV. Anxiety diagnoses have been on the rise, especially in a post-pandemic world. With more and more people suffering from anxiety in our stressful lifestyles, it can be challenging to find a path forward and calm our minds. But we know that anxiety can be a powerful signal from our body that change needs to occur. One change we can implement immediately is changing what we eat daily. Our food has the power to lower inflammation in our body, enhance gut bacteria, and ultimately change how we feel. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru sits down with Dr. Uma Naidoo, a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef, and Nutrition Specialist. Dr. Naidoo shares the research that shows the connection between the foods we eat and how we feel. She also shares the common myths about anxiety and lifestyle factors that can increase our anxiety, including ultra-processed foods, lack of fiber, and a sedentary lifestyle. Dr. Naidoo shows us how to fill our plates with foods and incorporate anxiety-busting foods into our diet. Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the US. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. She is the author of This is Your Brain on Food, and her new book, Calm Your Mind with Food, focuses on anxiety, the gut brain connection, and practical tools to calm our minds. In this episode, Dhru and Dr. Naidoo dive into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):The common misconceptions about anxiety (1:44 / 1:44)The foods in our diet and lifestyle factors that have increased anxiety (5:53 / 5:53)The interlink between the brain and the body in relationship to anxiety (10:12 / 7:48)Fried foods and what they cause in your body (12:00 / 9:30) How to know if you have a healthy metabolism (17:09 / 14:46)Dr. Naidoo's journey with anxiety (23:32 / 21:10)The truth about foods that are marketed as “healthy” (33:14 / 29:04)The importance of dietary fiber in our diets (38:12 / 34:00)Leptin resistance (40:37 / 36:16) The impact of a sedentary lifestyle on anxiety (42:50 / 38:38)Dr. Naidoo's patient testimonials (48:41 / 44:30)Protein for satiety (51:40 / 47:17)Foods and recipes Dr. Naidoo loves (58:00 / 53:50)Dr. Naidoo's cancer diagnosis journey (1:01:44 / 57:25) Also mentioned in this episodePreorder Book Bonuses from Dr. NaidooAccess more than 3,000 specialty lab tests with Rupa Health. Today on the Dhru Purohit Podcast, I share a simple gratitude practice to help supercharge and accelerate your goals and dreams. At the end of the year, many of us set New Year's resolutions or intentions for how we want the next year to go. I see an interesting pattern as people start to list their goals, dreams, habits, and the things they want to give attention and energy to. But this process often involves focusing on what is lacking and the areas where they feel they are not enough. Today, I share three questions to ask ourselves before we set our goals, which I call a palette cleanse, that will help us remember that no matter how we feel we did at the end of the month or year, we did the best we could. It also allows us to remember how supported we were and what we did to help other people. Here is the practice No matter how big or small…1) What's something tough or challenging that I did this month?2) Who's someone who did something for me?3) What's something nice I did for someone else?Remembering these three things changes your vibration for what you think is possible and takes you out of negativity bias into positivity bias. In this episode, Dhru dives into (audio version / Apple Subscriber version):Why this gratitude practice is key (1:09 / 1:09)Negativity bias (10:45 / 8:10)Threats to our mental health (12:25 / 9:55)Deprogram negativity (13:10 / 11:30)Our brains as detectives (16:27 / 13:55)Gratitude as mediation on the goodness in our lives (17:51 /15:00)The Science of Gratitude (22:22 / 17:45)Deep diving into the Gratitude Protocol (27:15 / 22:57)How to implement the Gratitude Protocol (40:20 / 35:58)Also mentioned in today's episode:Episode with Dr. Tara SwartEpisode with Bruce LiptonEpisode with GottmansNewsletter on Gratitude and ResearchFor more on Dhru Purohit, be sure to follow him on Instagram @dhrupurohit, on Facebook @dhruxpurohit, on Twitter @dhrupurohit, and YouTube @dhrupurohit.This episode is brought to you by Rupa Health, Birch Living, and JOOV. What's the big deal about Vitamin D?

Health Has No Finishline

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 24, 2021 9:18

Over the past several years, you've probably noticed that this vitamin has been mentioned on new sites, blogs, and all over social media. And more recently, this particular vitamin has been linked to a reduced risk of infection and death from COVID-19 and influenza. And if you've guessed that I'm talking about vitamin D, you are correct. Now vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is not present in many foods. It promotes our body's ability to absorb calcium and is vital for bone growth. Vitamin D is also responsible for cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, as well as reducing inflammation. So you might be thinking, doesn't our body naturally make it? Or doesn't sun exposure trigger the synthesis of vitamin D in our skin? Well, it's a bit of both, but many factors determine just how much is being produced in our skin. The melanin content of our skin and wearing sunscreen hinders adequate production of vitamin D because sunscreen blocks UVB rays which are responsible for initiating the vitamin D synthesis in our skin. Now when you apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 it decreases the amount of vitamin D made in the body by about 99%. Not to mention the season we're in, what time of day it is, and how close to the equator we live equally play a role in our exposure to natural sunlight. In the last year, we have ventured outdoors far less than we are accustomed to, thanks to stay-at-home orders, and the few times we do head outdoors, our faces are covered with a mask. None of which helps with the natural production of vitamin D and how we absorb it. Not to mention that many of us are deficient in vitamin D given the lifestyle, nutrition, and lack of movement that may continue on like a vicious cycle. Some not-so-obvious signs of vitamin D deficiency include mood changes, bone density loss, muscle cramps or weakness, bone and joint pain especially in your back, and fatigue. Energy production and management, hormone health, immunity, gut health, joint health, and more rely on this super vitamin for optimal function every single day. Below are some ways how we can up the ante on our daily intake of vitamin D, you ready? 1. Consume foods rich in vitamin D. According to the National Institutes of Health, foods rich in vitamin D include cod liver oil, wild-caught or canned mackerel, wild-caught salmon, tuna, sardines, mushrooms, beef liver, egg yolk, and Swiss cheese are the best sources of vitamin D. Not to mention the many vitamin D fortified beverages, cereals, and yogurts on the market. 2. Look for supplements with bioavailable micro-and-macro nutrients. The vitamin D quotient should be greater than or equal to about 1000 IU. If you're taking D-drops, you want to do 6-10 drops each day (each drop = 1000 IU). If you are wondering what are the optimum levels of vitamin D that you should be consuming, I recommend having your vitamin D levels tested with your local physician or practitioner. 3. Get outdoors. Invest in infrared red-light therapy (Joov, Blublox have some really accessible devices that you can use from the comfort of your home). Even if it's 30 minutes on your front porch, balcony, or a walk by yourself or with people in your immediate bubble, any amount of outdoor time helps you feel refreshed and rejuvenated while helping your skin absorb its own ideal levels of natural vitamin D. Now I'm curious, what's your fave way to get your daily dose of vitamin D? Share with me on Instagram @_healthhasnofinishline! Microdosing, Detox, Iron Toxicity, Sleeping Cold, Hydrogen Water, And More! Community Q&A Solo Show #301

It’s time for another Community Q&A show! As a reminder, all of these questions are pulled from The Life Stylist Podcast Facebook Group. Hop in, search for us, and find an amazing community of like-minded people. Before we begin, let me remind you that I am not a medical doctor, so please check with a professional before undergoing any alternative or experimental therapy. I am just sharing with you everything I’ve learned over my own journey and doing 300 episodes of this podcast.   08:08 — Cindy asks: I’m wanting to do some mushroom micro dosing and realize the source and quality is very important. Does anyone know of a reputable place where I could purchase this online? Microdosing is where you take generally 1/10 or 2/10 of a gram of mushrooms for cognitive benefit Much research is currently underway to prove the benefits. There is also a lot of legislative action moving toward legalization As of now, psilocybin mushrooms are illegal almost everywhere The best thing you can do is ask around, as many people grow them at home these days. Check out online forums, or seek out like minded people in your community that are into plant medicines, etc., such as breathwork classes, sound baths, etc. There are even psilocybin mushrooms kits that you can buy online, but to my knowledge it's quite complex in terms of growing them Check out www.doubleblindmag.com’s online course about how to grow mushrooms yourself When you do find them, consider adding lions mane and a small dose of niacin at the same time, which is the formula made popular by Paul Stamets Watch the film Fantastic Fungi to learn more   14:43 — Maya asks: What would you recommend for low iron? Not interested in iron supplements for various reasons. Thanks for your wisdom and input! The iron issue is very complex because traditional medicine has a very antiquated view on iron level recommendations Research Morely Robbins, and consider doing his Root Cause Protocol and read his iron toxicity posts. He’s been on a ton of podcasts as well, and will hopefully be on this show soon. I would study the work Ray Peatand about the common misconceptions of low iron Depending on which type of doctor has determined you need more iron, the only way I’m aware of to naturally get more of it is to eat red meat, on the rare side You can also take beef liver capsules, which I’ll talk about shortly   17:08 — Mark asks: Does your OOLER or chiliPAD ever create wet spots on your sheets? I have had the chiliPAD and OOLER for a few years and have never had this issue. If that is the case, you might have a leak. They have excellent customer service, so definitely reach out to them for assistance.  I did a mini-documentary video on these products here I’m a massive fan of these devices, and literally could not live without them. I even travel with my chiliPAD on road trips, and even when I fly to hot cumulates. Nothing has improved my sleep like the Chili Technology products   20:46 — Michelle asks: Do you eat liver? If so, which types? Beef, chicken? How often? I get grass-fed raw liver from a farm in Bakersfield called Covenant Farms, where I order 1/4 steers. Another great source is www.belcampo.com. When I have the time and energy, I cut it into little cubes, then freeze it. This way I can pop them down like pills periodically throughout the week. Make sure your source is grass-fed and grass-finished. Never eat any factory farm animal foods if you can avoid it.  If raw liver is not your jam, you can take desiccated organ meet capsules from Ancestral Supplements Beef liver is one of the most nutrient dense foods on the planet and is rich in so many vital vitamins and minerals. There is a reason why predatory animals eat the organs of prey first, then the muscle meat. Here are the nutrients found in a 3.5-ounce (100-gram) serving of beef liver: Vitamin B12: 3,460% of the RDI. Vitamin B12 helps the formation of red blood cells and DNA. It is also involved in healthy brain function. Vitamin A: 860–1,100% of the RDI. Vitamin A is important for normal vision, immune function, and reproduction. It also helps organs like the heart and kidneys function properly. Riboflavin (B2): 210–260% of the RDI. Riboflavin is important for cellular development and function. It also helps turn food into energy . Folate (B9): 65% of the RDI. Folate is an essential nutrient that plays a role in cell growth and the formation of DNA  Iron: 80% of the RDI, or 35% for women of menstruating age. Iron is another essential nutrient that helps carry oxygen around the body.  The iron in the liver is heme iron, the kind most easily absorbed by the body. Copper: 1,620% of the RDI. Copper acts like a key to activate a number of enzymes, which then help regulate energy production, iron metabolism, and brain function. Choline: Liver provides all of the Adequate Intake (AI) for women and nearly all of it for men (AI is used because there is insufficient evidence to set an RDI). Choline is important for brain development and liver function.   27:54 — Erin asks: Hydrogen water - yay or nay? It seems the human research on it is pretty sparse, so any anecdotal experiences would be welcome! Hydrogen like the tablets made by Vital Reaction are one of my daily go-to supplements. I’ve also used the Vital Reaction hydrogen inhaler for years, also on a daily basis. It’s great for mental clarity. Another great product is the Hydro Shot, which is a line of canned hydrogen drinks, some of which contain CBD, amino acids, and other complementary nutrients that enhance the potency of the hydrogen. There is a grip of human research courtesy of The Molecular Hydrogen Research Institute. Listen to Ep #112 featuring Tyler W. Lebaron, one of the world’s top experts on hydrogen. I use it constantly, especially on flights due to its powerful antioxidant capacity.  It also protects against EMF exposure, due to its ability to reduce oxidative stress and scavenge free-radicals. Dr Mercola has explained this in many interviews.  It’s also a potent anti-inflammatory. If I could only use five supplements for the rest of my life, this would be on the list. I’m recording a show with Robert Slovak next week in Mexico, and we’ll cover Hydrogen in depth, so stay tuned for that.    32:14 — Ditte asks: From your IG posts and stories, it looks like that you don't do that much IV vitamin therapy. Is that correct? If so, why? I love nutrient IV’s, although I don’t always post my treatments on IG. It’s hard to use your phone with a drip in your arm. I did once record an entire podcast with an IV in my arm though, which you can hear on episode #181 featuring Lily Kunin, focused on IV’s.  You get much better absorption doing IV’s as compared to swallowing pills. Something like 20% vs. 90% bioavailability.  I get them often at Next Health in LA They are great before and after travel, and anytime you need an immunity boost. You can get many different recipes or mixes, although most clinics will still use the term “Myers Cocktail,” which is the old-school combination of vitamins and minerals. I’m also a fan of IV NAD treatments for energy, or ATP production specifically.  In an upcoming episode with Dr. Craig Koniver, we talk about IV’s and NAD in depth.    36:30 — Laurie asks: Any suggestions for muscle soreness and back pain? Doctors are prescribing naproxen or Advil 600. There has to be a better way. I have been working on my back pain for many years, and here are but a few of the things that have helped: Egoscue Network Spinal Analysis, or NSA (listen to the show I did with the creator Donny Epstein) FRC or Functional Range Conditioning by Dr Andreo Spina is amazing for joint health and mobility, which is the source of much back pain. I’ll do a show and treatment with him as soon as I can get into Canada. The Biomat and Therasage heating pads are great for pain relief. Dr. Matt Cook in San Jose is doing amazing work on pain using stem cells, peptides, and all sorts of cutting edge modalities. He’ll also be on the show soon to discuss his strategies.  Kundalini Yoga - I’ve done a few shows on this with Guru Jagat, Guru Singh, and Tej Khalsa Katonah Yoga (Episode #89 with Abbie Galvin) Stem cell treatment (Episode #133 with Dr. Harry Adelson) Ice baths are my #1 hack for pain and inflammation. I do them daily, sometimes twice. As for pain meds, I would avoid them at all costs. Instead, one could use Kratom, which comes in a very potent extract or regular powder and capsules. Be mindful not to get high or addicted. However, as a former opiate addict, I have not had issues with dependency. I use it with caution. Check out the film ‘A Leaf Of Faith’ to learn all about Kratom. It’s an incredible natural pain killer.  There are tons of Kratom sites online, so make sure you buy from one that lab tests for mold, heavy metals, etc. Sacred Kratom.com seems to be legit.   48:21 — Avery asks: Could someone give me a detailed detox protocol? It's for a family friend. She is having a lot of gut issues, along with 5 stomach ulcers. I'm looking for a protocol that involves supplementation as well as a diet that goes along with it. Please keep the ulcers in mind when recommending just in case you are aware if any part of the protocol could negatively impact the ulcers. I’ve been detoxing toxins, drugs, and heavy metals from my system for two decades. The best programs I’ve found are: The Black Box by Quicksilver Scientific. It's the most simple to use, and a great one to start with. Study the work of Dr. Chris Shade (Episode #210), who’s one of the world’s leading experts on detox. Another detox master is Dr. Dan Pompa, who was on Episode #121. He’s got a great cellular detox program as well.  Both of them are my go-to doctors when it comes to detox For a more hardcore approach, you can do the L. Ron Hubbard niacin/sauna 30-day protocol, which you can learn about by watching Dr. George Yu’s video lectures.  There is also a Facebook Group led by Bret Bouer, who also does coaching. This is what I did to remove the lead and mercury from my body. It worked, but it was a commitment.   51:58 — Priscilla asks: Okay people as we are moving into Fall and with everything that has been going on, what are you stocking up on? I keep hearing selenium, vit c, zinc, magnesium, and monolaurin etc. All of those are great immune supporters. I would add infrared saunas, ice baths, get enough sun, and focus on quality sleep. Avoiding the mainstream media is also great for your immune system. For solid information around the so-called pandem!c visit www.questioningcovid.com, where you will find more fact-based information on the situation. Also look forward to the upcoming episode with Dr Zach Bush #304, wherein he pretty much destroys the official COV!D narrative.    51:58 —Stiff asks: Can anyone recommend an audio hypnotherapy/reprogramming meditation along the lines of what Bruce Lipton and Joe Dispenza talks about? Try Hemi-Sync audio programs. NuCalm if you can afford it (Episode #265 w/ Jim Poole). There are many cheap or free binaural beats apps as well, but they are not as effective over time. The Joe Dispenza meditation MP3’s on his site are fantastic and I use them daily. He explains how they work in Episode #259. Are you aware of the dangers of EMF exposure in your home, but have no idea where to start when it comes to finding, and fixing them?  Are you concerned about your exposure to the current 3G, 4G, and 5G wireless networks now activated in most major cities? Have you attempted to test the levels yourself using EMF meters you found online and ended up confused and frustrated? EMFs (electromagnetic frequencies) are one of the most toxic elements in our living and work environments. Due to the technical nature of accurately testing for them—and the training required to do so properly—many of us resign ourselves to the fact that we just have to accept them and the consequences they bring in order to use the modern technology we depend on. But you don’t have to. In this seven-part video documentary series, you will follow world-renowned building biologist Brian Hoyer as he tests an entire home, room by room, to determine the source and level of every known type of EMF. Jaymie Icke is the founder of Ickonic Media Group, an alternative media channel producing films, series, podcasts, and more. He’s also the director of a new film called “Unnatural” that examines the connections between cancer and electromagnetic technology, as well as the increased use of social media and cell phones as they pertain to mental health. Our conversation centers on the worldwide effect of electrosmog, or EMF pollution, in the environment around the world, in addition to the political implications of telecommunications companies lacking safety testing for various infrastructures and technologies. We’ve talked about the health implications of EMFs before, but this is the first time we’ve zoomed in to look at the global effect of EMFs, socially and politically. Many of you will recognize the name Icke from our recent episode with Jaymie’s father, David Icke. Jaymie shares what it was like growing up with David Icke, if any of his dad’s theories were too out there for him, and if it was tough to see the ridicule his dad faced by the media and online trolls. We also discuss why they started Ickonic in the first place and what each of us can do to circumvent and prevent censorship, one of the greatest threats to our democracy, and the concerns around lack of privacy and surveillance that come along with 5G technology. We must choose awareness over fear, so take the information in so you can be more aware—but try to stay relaxed, have fun, and enjoy life.   12:17 — Growing up as the son of David Icke Having the attitude of questioning everything and believing what is right for you regardless of the authority Seeing the work David is doing in the world and working together closely The surreal experience of seeing your dad walk out into a crowd of 3000 people Viewing his childhood as a free education Enduring bullying or ridicule due to his fathers’ ideas What was tough at the moment became a gift The great thinkers who were ahead of their time but weren’t appreciated until their predictions were proven true The ideas of David Icke that were too out there How little we know about what there is to know about reality The common stories between separate ancient cultures   26:15 — The idea and inspiration behind creating the alternative content platform Ickonic If the mainstream media were doing their job, all the corruption in the world should have been exposed People wanting more substance from their media How the media has an allegiance to who pays them, creating a conflict of interest Finding a balance of production and credibility The looming threat of censorship The barrier of entry when it comes to quality   36:49 — All about “Unnatural” Exposing the dangerous technologies that we already use The decade-long explosion of radiation exposure and the lack of evidence pointing to its safety The evidence pointing to how unsafe exposure to EMF is for us The rising rate of cancers, brain tumors, and birth defects since cell phones became widespread EMF being listed as a type-2 carcinogen The mental health epidemic we are going to face The government conspiracy prioritizing profits over safety   54:20 — The danger of current technologies compared to what’s coming The difference between millimeter waves and microwaves Why no countries have done any research on the safety of these newer technologies The difficulties in proving the health problems ourselves How we can fight back   01:03:17 — The deeper motives behind mass surveillance Surveillance leads to massive profits The potential to misuse people’s data The potential future with brain implants and virtual reality The unhealthy relationship between humans and technology The monetary value of data The dangers to democracy caused by surveillance   01:14:28 — How people can mobilize and build awareness Petitioning to block 5G in your town Boycott the technology and realize your own power Educate yourself and become aware Watch “Unnatural” and ask questions   More about this episode. I was thinking of getting him a Biomat mini or belt... what else? Giving a blanket answer to this question is tough because it ignores everyone's bio-individuality. That said, a good guideline to follow would be, as a first step: give the problem some crutches to lean on. This means giving the inflammatory response a break for a moment so that your gut can soothe itself — at least for long enough to absorb the nutrients you're going to need to begin healing. Eliminating the most obvious food sensitivities like nuts, eggs, dairy, wheat, processed foods, nightshades, etc. Once that's dialed in, go a level up and consider removing high-histamine foods that could be perpetuating the inflammatory cycle. And then, once a little more stable, support detoxification by getting in a light daily sweat, and eating steamed foods that assist the liver, like dandelion, artichoke, beets, cruciferous vegetables, garlic, and gluten-free oats. And all the while, prioritize meditation, sunlight, and lymphatic drainage. A light rebounding session on a Bellicon, or even just doing some jumping jacks on some carpeting can be a big help. To dive deep into all matters colitis, and IBD, someone who'd been a well-kept secret here in LA for several years, but is now out of LA, and entering the online world in a bigger way, is a personal friend of mine, Jordan Kravitz. Jordan was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in 2015, and after getting handed the pamphlets about all the drugs he'd need from the head of the IBD clinic here at Cedars-Sinai Hospital, Jordan laughed at him and told him to keep his drugs. He then went on an absolutely crazy journey to reverse Crohn's Disease, and today enjoys excellent digestive health, thanks to his unique approach to healing inflammatory gut issues of all kinds.  If you'd like to connect with him to learn more, or for one on one coaching, you can check out his website at jordankravitz.com, and use the contact page to get in touch. Or email him directly at jordan (at) jordankravitz.com. Be sure to tell him I sent you!   01:02:05 — Well Beings Worldwide asks: Does anyone have recommendations for commercially available red tape? It's been three summers in a row that I have the same melasma “map” on my forehead and side of my face. I only use sunscreen if I stay in the sun longer than an hour. I wear hats but still, it has started to appear on the same spot. any advice? I haven’t had the sun cause wrinkles I use lots of essential oils on my face: Osea, Alitura Naturals, and Living Libations Do red light therapy Study the work of Dr. Ray eat: raypeat.com Avoid seed oils/omega 3’s  Liver spots get their brown colour from lipofuscin, a waste material that builds up in our cells as we age.  Lipofuscin has three constituents: Oestrogen + Iron + PUFAs = LipofuscinIn  In other words, the polyunsaturated fats (canola oil, soy oil, corn oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, fish oil, flax oil etc) we consume in our food (and rub into our skin in the form of moisturisers), the iron we eat from red meat and green vegetables, and the oestrogen our bodies produce naturally combine to form this brown, fatty waste product that clogs up our cells and, as we age, forms liver spots. Where does sunlight fit into this picture? Dr Peat explains that when we’re exposed to UV light, it can cause damage to unsaturated fatty acid molecules in our skin, producing free radicals.  Manage your iron intake. This is one of the most important pieces of the age spots puzzle.  One way of managing your iron levels is to give blood regularly; there’s evidence that this can even reduce your risk of heart attack and strokes. Donating blood can be especially helpful for men and post-menopausal women, because they do not lose any blood through menstruation.  Reduce your intake of PUFAs Increase your intake of vitamin E (a powerful antioxidant) Pay attention to your estrogen levels, for men and women Listen to what Nadine Artemis has to say about the sun Vitamin D app: dminder.ontometrics.com Get Surthrival’s D3+K2 Daylight Concentrate (use code “lifestylist” for 10% off) Quicksilver Scientific also has a great D3+K2 combo Episode 6: The Great Sunshine Swindle with Nadine Artemis   01:55:10 — Mazena asks: Male pattern baldness. Anybody have any tips? I know it could be a lot of things but I'm open to suggestions so I can pinpoint what's going on. I’ve heard this probably 100 times over the years Like most experimental, and extreme diets, they often work for a period of time, then the body falls out of balance.  There has never, ever been a 100% vegan human civilization in recorded history, which is why i call it experimental We don't yet know if it's safe. it would take 2-3 generations of 100% vegan people to breed 100% vegan kids, who then breed with 100% vegan people a few times over to see if its viable In my experience, being vegetarian or vegan is a form of fasting, or cleansing which can be amazing in the short term I prefer a balanced diet and to listen to my body and what it wants, since it is its own living organism, with its own innate intelligence  If you do decide to phase out of this diet, try starting with bone broth (no additional animals die to make bone broth) or pastured eggs or wild caught, sustainably sourced fish. or even just oysters.  To me, any diet that is deficient in critical nutrients and thus requires that you take supplements to fill the gap, is likely not a natural human diet because that would ot require supplements like b vitamins, vitamin a etc. Study the work of Dr. Weston Price for more info on the natural human diet and nutrient deficiencies  Check out next tuesday’s episode: Why You Can't Beat Meat: The Ultimate Carnivore Diet Guide W/ Dr. Paul Saladino Episode 245: Wild Fed: How To Become A Modern Day Hunter-Gatherer w/ Daniel Vitalis *Vegan Trigger Warning Episode 94: Why I'm Not a Vegan - Daniel Vitalis All that said, to me, what trumps diet is avoiding non-native EMF and blue light. circadian biology wins over nutrient biology in my book.  get into sync with nature, as nature is where creation’s wisdom lies   02:10:00 — Richard asks: Anyone have personal experience with improving eyesight naturally??? Daniel Vitalis has been on the show a few times before, but every time he comes back, I learn something new — and boy oh boy is there a lot to learn in this episode. We discussed the first season of Daniel’s new TV show — “WildFed” — the last time he was on the show. But now it’s out, I’ve seen it, and it’s fantastic. This is a culinary adventure series where you follow Daniel to eight different, extreme locales to hunt, fish, and forage wild ingredients, turning them into delicious meals. It’s a lot of fun to watch, and there are also HUGE director’s cuts that offer in-depth, behind-the-scenes looks for each episode. And you can use code LUKE15 for 15% off WildFed Season 1 + Director's Cuts at vimeo.com/ondemand/wildfeds1dc! A true hero of the wild world, and one of the few modern-day hunter-gatherers we have left, Daniel is the perfect guide for anyone who’s interested in getting a little wilder. Even if you’re not interested in learning to hunt, fish, and forage, Daniel can still help you live a modern life while staying connected to nature in a visceral way. There are few people more thoughtful about the environment and their role in it than Daniel, but it’s something we could all stand to get a little (or a lot) better at.   11:45 — Mimicking the natural world in the modern-day Pretty much none of us live in the natural world, and that realization is why I dedicated myself to biohacking The natural world is more than the sum of its parts I’ll escape to space while Daniel stays here to clean up the planet   16:15 — Where is the food industry at in 2020? Episode 2: Daniel Vitalis: Farming and the Fall of Man Use the code STYLE10 for 10% off at SurThrival.com/lukestorey What does “supplement” even mean today? The things that are now considered supplements but used to be considered food Daniel isn’t a great marketer, but he makes good shit What most air filters get wrong and why it’s so hard to find a good one   30:30 — Wild Foods vs. Domestic Foods Why nutritional content and variety is often lacking from grocery store food Everything you eat isn’t necessarily food (or at least meant to be food) Creating a (flawed) diet through domestication A wild blueberry vs. the blueberry you find in a store The dangerous anti-nutrients in some vegetables that most people think are healthy Daniel has probably eaten more species in the last 12 months than the average US citizen will eat in 10 years The difference between nutritional variety and aesthetic variety Some of the vegetables sold to you as different products in the supermarket are literally from the same plant, and most of us don’t know it The problem with eating the same foods over and over, year-round The benefits of eating with the seasons Why cloned produce is so whack   48:30 — The “Natural Human Diet” and the problem with the environment that we’ve created for ourselves Busting some historical food myths The historical eating and farming practices of some indigenous tribes Lichen (and other things you’d normally never think of as food) Why it’s hard for most of us to define the “natural humans diet” Why littering is part of human nature but litter itself is a byproduct of industrialization Alcohol’s role in our problematic environments and civilization The many, many, many societal problems that come as a byproduct of agriculture The physiological benefits of foraging vs. farming The very specific definition of “civilization”   01:09:03 — The societal problems that can be traced back domestication Universal Love Vs. Lockdown Lunacy: A Worldwide  Wake-up Call W/ David Icke There’s more than enough food for everyone, but not for everyone to be healthy and safe Will replacing our current problematic hierarchy with a different hierarchy actually improve anything?   01:20:00 — Have some of us ruined our bodies beyond repair through domesticated foods? I feel the best when I mostly just eat beef… but do I actually thrive on such a non-diverse diet? Are viruses every beneficial? Treating the root cause vs. relieving symptoms You have more ownership over wild animals and foraged food than you might think   01:48:30 — Two critical elements that most people are missing in their diet What are vitamins K2 and D3? Starting in the 80’s, supplement companies began pushing massive protein consumption. We all believed that “more protein = more muscle growth.” But I’m here to tell you that IT’S A BIG FAT LIE. It doesn’t matter if you’re consuming 30 or 300 grams of protein — if you don’t have a sufficient supply of enzymes to digest protein, your muscles will be starving for those vital building blocks. That’s why it’s crucial you take a high-quality enzyme. In our last +1, we had fun with the ultimate riddles of life—from skunks and giraffes to watches and pearls.    And… The answer to pretty much all of life’s riddles?   Love.   After Emerson gave me that answer to the hero-virtue riddle, we went to visit the ladies in the bath to tell mommy about his answer.    Which, of course, led to a whole ‘nother round of riddles.    Today we’re going to talk about the riddle I got from Ellen Langer—the “mother of mindfulness” research and the creator of the “psychology of possibility.”   In our interview, she asked me this little riddle…   Ellen: “What’s 1 + 1?”   … Before we carry on, whaddya think? What’s 1 + 1? …   Got it? Awesome.    Now, back to the show…   Ellen: “What’s 1 + 1?” Me: “Uhhh…”    (The quick look inside my head in that moment: “I know the answer can’t be 2 but…” “Hmmmm…” Insert thought from Part X: “Well! At least we’re filming this so I’ll look ridiculous!” Quick reply by Optimus: “That wasn’t helpful Part X. Just have fun and answer the question, B.” ← Yes, all of that happened in the span of a couple seconds. lol)    Me: “Uhh… 2?” Ellen: "Nope. The right answer is ‘It depends.’”   Then Ellen (in full Professor Langer mode) proceeded to school me on the importance of mindfully approaching life and its challenges.   If you’re adding two of the Arabic numeral “1”s together, she explained, the answer is 2.   But…   If you’re putting two pieces of gum together, the answer is 1.    And, as we discussed in the Joov-light powered bathroom the other night, if you’re putting two “1”s right next to each other, the answer is “11.” Put a sperm and an egg together and you get one baby (or maybe two!).   You get the idea…   And…   That’s Today’s +1.   If you feel so inspired, have fun riddling your friends and family as we remember to approach life a little more mindfully.   Today.

Today.

(0:41) Welcome Hello listeners! Welcome to Memorial Day weekend! We have the bathing suit show for you this week! Stacy and Sarah are both seeing a ton of ads popping up, pushing summer six-pack shame Stacy is seeing a lot of people speak up about pushing back against this pressure This is a guaranteed soap box show with lots of tangents, but trust that there will be tons of science as well Stacy has witnessed the clap-back against certain influencers within Instagram Celebrities calling out other celebrities for endorsing products that are actually destructive towards your health This week Stacy and Sarah will be talking about feelings, bodies, health, all the things that summer gives us the feels for But first, a big thank you and shout out to this week's episode sponsor, Joov You know Stacy and Sarah both personally use and love their products If you are interested in learning more about their products and how Stacy and Sarah use their Joov, be sure to visit https://joovv.com/paleoview Sarah sees the beach body marketing as nothing more than predatory marketing It gets people on the yo-yo When we buy into this marketing, we end up in a cycle of poor self-worth We then put ourselves on a restrictive diet and we lose the weight we think we are supposed to lose for summer so that we can fit what society tells us we are supposed to look like And then we maintain that for a couple of months, but when fall comes we fall into a weight gain period through the holidays There are so many people this is true for We end up having this cyclical weight loss and weight gain This yo-yo dieting is actually more harmful to our health than just staying overweight Going back and forth and cycling is way more harmful than loving our bodies, focusing on health, nutrients, activity, sleep, and managing stress Wherever you are feeling uncomfortable (as it pertains to your summer experiences), Stacy and Sarah hope to help you find ways to recalibrate your thinking Ultimately the yo-yo mindest isn't just unhealthy physically, but it is also very unhealthy mentally and it puts us in a cycle of shame and negativity Years ago Stacy wrote a post about disordered eatingand when/why/how to take a look at your eating choices to avoid disordered eating behaviors People need to be careful about even yo-yoing within the Paleo template with challenges It is so hard on your body and is so hard on your emotions This will really take a toll on how you are able to enjoy your summer Stacy shared how her body shame from when she was young impacted her summers, and how her mindset shifted when she had kids She realized that she didn't want that shame mindset to impact her children and her experiences with them When you let go of these "ideals" the healthier you are mentally and the healthier you are physically because you aren't hiding during the summer - you are getting out there, living and being active It is so important to push outside of our comfort zone, know that it is going to be uncomfortable at first, but it will be so worth it (11:01) The Physical Impact of Yo-Yo Dieting Sarah wants to get into the physical side of this Why to let go of the mentality of having to look a certain way in order to have fun in the summer so that you can get away from yo-yo dieting When we are losing weight, we lose both body fat and lean muscle mass It is very challenging to design a plan to preserve muscle mass through fat loss It is not impossible, but most of the go-to ways for weight loss lead to muscle loss With most strategies, you are going to lose about a pound of muscle per pound of fat lost This is a typical body composition change while you are losing weight, especially through rapid weight loss strategies Ex: keto, low carb, severe calorie restriction, carb cycling The only way to avoid this is to eat a lot of protein and to carefully factor in the lifestyle pieces (like weight training, lots of sleep, and stress management) How much muscle you have on your body, versus how much fat you have on your body, is a better predictor of health If you have a lot of fat on your body, but you have a lot of muscle on your body as well, you don't have an increased risk of chronic health problems compared to someone who is "skinny fat" When we lose weight, especially rapidly, we are losing that important muscle mass And then when we fall off the wagon and gain that weight back it is easier to put fat back on rather than muscle There is a lot of science looking at people who have gone through multiple weight loss cycles (aka the yo-yo) and these studies show that these people over time keep increasing their body fat percentages This causes a greater increase in risk for type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease It would have been healthier to just stay at the starting (higher) weight than to yo-yo It is really important to emphasize that there are ways to lose weight in healthy ways However, the equation boils down to focusing on the health part versus the weight part Avoid the mentality of having to look a certain way so that we sacrifice health in order to be a certain weight This is exactly what yo-yo dieting is Even at the 10/15 pound cycle level, it is gradually shifting body composition over the cycles towards one that increases the risk of chronic disease It is sacrificing health for weight Stacy is so in love with everything that Sarah said wants her to physically drop the mic The news article Stacy and Sarah discuss The graphs Stacy mentioned: Stacy shared her experience with losing a massive amount of weight multiple times and what happened when she went back to her "normal life" and how this impacted her over time More info on the study that produced the graph: 13 of the 14 Biggest Loser contestants regained the weight they lost 4 of them are heavier now than they were before the competition And nearly all of the contestants have slower metabolisms than before the competition and burn fewer calories than expected It makes it so much harder to not gain weight when your metabolism and hormones are all out of whack from having this huge loss and then regain The other thing to consider with weight loss is that you are releasing hormones that are stored in your body fat every time you lose weight Some of these can be negative as well So every time you lose weight you are putting yourself in a detox cycle with every yo-yo Let's say together as a community of friends that it is silly to subscribe to the idea that you have to look a certain way to enjoy your summer Sarah notes that the reason she included this graph in this week's show notes is because we have learned a lot from the Bigger Loser contestants in terms of why weight loss maintenance is so hard The science shows that pretty much every diet can help you lose weight It isn't actually hard to lose weight - it is hard to keep it off Statistics for years have shown that approximately 80% of people will gain the weight back over a five year period after a substantial weight loss The Biggest Loser contestants showed that this is because losing the weight so quickly tanked their metabolism Their metabolism never recovered This is likely because of the loss of lean body mass Our muscles burn a lot more calories than other parts of our body Our brains burn about 25% of our calories and our muscles burn most of the rest If we are losing muscle mass that directly impacts our basal metabolic rate The other impact here is on thyroid function Our thyroid hormones are directly controlling our metabolism There are now a variety of studies showing that rapid weight loss can reduce thyroid function There was a study published in 2017 showing that very low carb and ketogenic diets can actually cause hyperthyroidism This then requires thyroid hormone replacement Rapid weight loss has a pretty big effect on metabolism If your metabolism takes a small dip every single time you are losing weight because of the impact of thyroid function and loss of lean mass and it doesn't fully recover as you gain weight, your metabolism is slowly going down This means that you need fewer calories to lose your weight You end up chasing your deficits because you need a bigger and bigger caloric deficit in order to successfully lose weight every cycle To compound this, there is this additional effect on ghrelin Ghrelin is our hormone hunger that is the highest right before we eat It is the hormone that is responsible for us feeling hungry It is a really important hormone that feeds into a number of systems within our body There are studies that show that people who lose weight double their baseline ghrelin So when you lose weight quickly you reduce your basal metabolic rate and you increase your ghrelin so that you are hungrier You are basically creating a situation where you are setting yourself up to fail If the only focus is that you must be ripped/thin, and the focus is not on health, these are the consequences (26:33) Thinness vs. Health Sarah feels that there are a lot of myths around weight loss The focus is still on "how to trick your body" and "how to become a fat burning machine" These taglines are the wrong focus Most of us are probably healthier heavier than we think we need/want to be because having a little bit of extra stored energy is important for hormone regulation There are so many ways of measuring health that have nothing to do with the number on the scale or what size clothes we wear, and these measures are far more important Looking at hormones, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, body composition - these are all better predictors of chronic disease predictors and overall health We get in this cycle where we evaluate health based on a comparison between us and the cover of Sports Illustrated, which is not a picture of health Now we are sacrificing our health to try to achieve this misguided ideal It's far more important to focus on getting healthy to get thin instead of focusing on getting thin to get healthy The hardest thing that Sarah has had to learn in her own health journey is the words thin and healthy don't actually have the same definition Stacy brought up a great example of how this situation can go the other way when someone is sick and losing weight when they don't want to And this again does not mean that your body is not worthy of enjoying your summer experiences Stacy also noted that this year's Sports Illustrated bathing suit issue actually includes bodies of all sizes and is a huge stride in the right direction Over the last 50 to 60 years we have seen dietary guidelines focus on achieving low cardiovascular diseases factors and thinness, different than healthiness After these poor dietary guidelines have failed to achieve these goals, the conversation has gone so much more extreme, which is why these fad diets have had so much room to grow This is also why there is so much shame associated with struggling to maintain a lower body weight Step one of correcting this path that we are on as a society is redefining the conversation and the goals Defining health in terms of how we feel, our energy levels, the easy markers in our blood to measure, mood and how we handle stress, we would go a long ways towards fixing a lot of the bad information out there in terms of what the best diet practices are There are a lot of people who are not well and who wish they could put on lean muscle mass and focus on health If more of us could put ourselves in their shoes, and challenge our negative thoughts about our own weight, it would challenge what has become normal around striving for thinness This will also allow us to learn to focus on our health What am I doing and what can I be doing to focus on my health We have to learn to let go of this mentality of thinness being the ideal because the ideal is health and that looks different for everything Stacy would love to challenge everyone to really change their negative thoughts To not just turn those off, but to learn to shift those thoughts What is something positive and encouraging you can think about yourself? This will change so much about how you choose to live your life A mindset of negativity will snowball into disordered eating for most people, which feeds right into the yo-yo cycle The other thing that Stacy wants to mention is this idea of 'all bodies are swimsuit/bikini bodies' can cause some confusion and be taken too far There are so many people who then feel pressured to wear a bikini Stacy wants to encourage people to ultimately do what they feel comfortable doing, and wear what you feel comfortable wearing There is a difference between getting outside your comfort zone and loving yourself, and pushing yourself to feel uncomfortable This won't help it feel any better The 'fake it until you make it' mentality doesn't work for Sarah when it comes to body image She feels much better wearing something more flattering and modest since that is something she personally gravitates towards These are the style of clothes that make her feel pretty Find the clothing choices that make you feel beautiful (41:04) Closing Thoughts Sarah notes that these are hard concepts to challenge Even when you feel like you are doing all of the healthy things right, it is really hard to see all the diet propaganda and not second guess yourself Find a way to shut those influences off and to create a new bubble for yourself Learn to focus on the most important thing, which is honoring yourself and respecting yourself enough to make the healthy choice, not the societal pressure choice Before this week's show is wrapped up, Stacy wants Sarah to share a bit on the new Joov Go(the good entry model), what are the best uses for this? Sarah thinks that this depends on what your goals are Most of the Joovmodels have two different wavelengths that are clinically proven to benefit different systems, but the wavelengths work independently of each other The JoovGo only has the red light This wavelength is responsible for the skin health benefits (wrinkle reduction, scar reduction, skin tightening, increase in collagen) Sarah brings her JoovGo when she travels and she notices that it has a calming effect on her and help with her sleep quality while on the road She will typically do two or three 10-minute sessions, moving it around If you are looking to reduce inflammation or to manage pain, Sarah would suggest investing in the JoovMini You can build off the JoovMini, but you can't build off the JoovGo The JoovMini allows you to experience the benefits of both wavelengths Stacy notes that Joov offers a 60-day trial and free-return policy So if you want to test the JoovGo and see how it works for you, you can give it a try Sarah has a blog post on the science of Joovthat you can check out here To check it out, visit https://joovv.com/paleoview Thank you so much for listening this week! Click here to listen in iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 339: Healthiest Houseplants that Detoxify and Purify Our Air (0:00) Intro Stacy prepared a record number of notes for today's podcast topic - 24 pages! Sarah is putting the finishing touches on the slides for her event this weekend, ThePaleoMom Workshop and Retreat at 1440 Multiversity! Today's topic: houseplants! FYI, "houseplants" is one word! That's something Stacy learned preparing for this show. Houseplants can act as air purification systems in your home. However, they can be toxic to pets. Stacy A special thanks to this episode's sponsor, Joovv! Joov makes amazing red and near infrared light therapy devices! It's a great tool for detoxifying the body. Red light therapy is great for autoimmune disease, pain management, depression, improved energy, reduced pain, improved skin, and enhanced weight loss. Sarah loves her Joovv red light therapy products! She's been using them for 2 years. She has a Legacy, a Quad, and the brand new JoovvGo. The new JoovvGo is an on-the-go, battery-operated, hand-held red light therapy device perfect for travel and spot treating. Check out their amazing collection of products, along with the new and very affordable JoovvGo, at https://joovv.com/paleoview. (14:20) What's in our air that plants could help purify? In 1989, NASA did a study to figure out how to purify the air for astronauts in space. They screened for the toxins, benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene. Since then there have been a number of other studies identifying other air toxins including xyelene and ammonia. Benzene is a toxic, volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbon which is a byproduct of coal. It's an industrial solvent found in most things to do with furniture: paints, varnishes, lacquer thinners. Benzene causes central nervous system damage, bone marrow damage, and is carcinogenic. Stacy notes that there are companies out there who do not use these chemicals. One that Stacy found is Pottery Barn (not an endorsement). Formaldehyde Environmentally, it can be found in the atmosphere, fire smoke, and cigarette smoke (to name a few). Really dangerous when ingested. Vapor can be toxic. Can be managed in small loads. Trichloroethylene A synthetic, volatile, light-sensitive, colorless, liquid that is miscible with organic solvents. Associated with metal because it can be used as a degreaser. In the process of combustion, it can produce irritants and toxic gases, which can lead to liver cancer, kidney cancer, and lymphoma. Considered a human carcinogen. (21:42) Why are plants good detoxifiers and which are best? Photosynthesis! They take in the air for photosynthesis to use carbon dioxide. They trap the toxic chemicals and filter them through their root process. It's largely leafy plants (that don't have a lot of flowers) with a strong root system that are the best purifiers. Stacy and her family started with a Money Tree because it was strong, sturdy, has a good root system, and is hard to kill (Stacy doesn't exactly have a green thumb). Every couple of months they add a new plant. These leafy plants alleviate "sick building" syndrome. Sarah notes that in addition to purifying air, plants also have a calming effect. Check out their podcast episode TPV Podcast, Episode 267: The Benefits of Nature for more on that! Ivy plants make great office plants because they're air purifiers, but they're toxic to pets if eaten. Snake plants are also great air purifiers. They, too, are toxic to pets. Stacy has come up with a workaround to this by putting it on a pedestal in her home, out of reach from pets. What happens to the toxins plants take in? Plants, like us, have microbiomes. The soil also has a microbiome. Bacteria are amazing detoxifiers, so they metabolize the toxic compounds into harmless compounds. In the 1989 NASA study discovered that houseplants made a significant difference in removing VOCs from the air. They tested a number of different factors like leaves, flowers, roots, and that's how they determined the plants with root systems are the best for purification. Sarah notes that in this study, some of these plants could remove up to 90% of benzene in the air in 24 hours. That's incredibly efficient! English Ivy is one such plants that remove up to 90% but beware as it is toxic when ingested. This database on the ASPCA identifies plants that are toxic to pets. (39:55) Purifying houseplants good for pets and a black thumb Stacy has created a list of houseplants that are hard to kill, good for pets, purify, are non-toxic, are more hearty, and do not require full sun. Areca Palm Shown to purify against formaldehyde, xylene and toluene Requires partial shade non-toxic Spider Plant Shown to purify against formaldehyde, xylene and toluene Requires partial to full shade non-toxic Flamingo Lily Shown to purify against formaldehyde, ammonia, xylene and toluene Requires full sun to partial shade Toxic to cats Peace Lily / Aspidistra Shown to purify against benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, ammonia, xylene and toluene Requires partial to dappled shade Toxic to cats Variegated Snake Plant Shown to purify against benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene Requires partial to full shade Toxic to cats and dogs Aloe Vera Shown to purify against benzene and formaldehyde Requires full sun to partial shade Healing properties Toxic to cats and dogs Banana Tree Shown to purify against formaldehyde Requires full sun to partial shade Non-toxic Pachina Money Tree (Scindapsus aureus) Shown to purify against benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene and toluene Requires partial to full shade Non-toxic Cactus No known purification benefits, but it has a good root system Requires partial to dappled shade Non-toxic Really hard to kill Plants make great gifts! Stacy chooses to include the Snake Plant, ZZ, and Aloe in her home, despite their toxicity for animals, because of their health benefits. All are out of reach of pets and do not "shed" leaves, making them less of a risk for her home - but be mindful about placement for these 3 plants if you have pets. Tips for keeping your plants alive Get plants that have the same watering needs Get plants that do well with having both wet and dry soil Use a plant watering bulb Set a reminder to water the plants Pay attention to sunlight needs and put them in the appropriate place Don't buy plants that are half dead If your plant dies, you're not a failure! The soil is still purifying the air! Get your questions in! We want to hear from you! And there's no end to questions we can answer and topics we can address! Engage on social media! That's how we get feedback! Thank you for listening. Resources TPV Podcast, Episode 267: The Benefits of Nature Plant Watering Bulb

Scott Nelson is a MedTech enthusiast, ambitious doer, and curious by nature. Scott and his partner Justin, created Joov the first professional-grade, full-body red light therapy device designed for convenient, in-home use. Endorsed by doctors, athletes, health professionals and many more, Joov, light therapy stimulates our cells and boosts cellular energy. In addition, to enhancing skin health and muscle recovery, clinical research has shown light therapy can improve the body’s ability to lose weight. There are numerous clinical studies that provide how red and near-infrared light therapy is effective including physical and emotional health/well-being. What are the benefits of red light therapy? The benefits are very wide-ranging. It helps achieve enhanced skin health. It helps in wrinkle reduction, enhances peek athletic performance, improves cognitive and sexual performance. All these benefits come from red light therapy and they are all clinically proven. This field is not well known but it is an emerging field. It has been around the mid 20th century. What is the easiest way through which people can use red-light therapy? The easiest and least expensive way to get light therapy is to get natural sunlight. Many people try to avoid going out in sun and prefer to wear a sunblock when out in sun. However, the reality is that the full-spectrum sun is very healthy not in a way we typically use it. It is very healthy to spend some time under the sun on daily basis. Scott says the easiest way is by starting to make sure we spend some time under the natural light and also light in general. Studies have been conducted on how some types of artificial lights can have negative ramifications on our health and disturb our circadian rhythm. Do you think excessive use of digital devices is affecting our health? Our body responds to different lights in different ways. Our ancestors were not surrounded by artificial light and spent most of the time outside. Their main sources of light were sun and in some cases, candles. Since the mid 20th century, due to the advancement in technology and consistent presence of digital devices in our lives, we are exposed to artificial light almost all the time. Our biological systems cannot adapt that fast to the overexposure of artificial light. From a high level, it is about understanding the core principle that our bodies have adapted to natural sunrise and sunset and light helps us to adjust our circadian rhythm. Since red light therapy can generate new cells, can it also improve communication between cells? Scott says red-light therapy has the ability to improve communication between cells. In fact, there is some well-understood mechanisms of actions involving light therapy and there are also some emerging mechanisms that seem to be happening but are not understood by academic researchers at the moment. When it comes to well-understood mechanisms, they can be further divided into two categories; primary and secondary. Primarily at a high level, these wavelengths of light help produce more mitochondria at a cellular level. A byproduct of this is better communication at a cellular level. Can you tell us a little about your products? If we want to use Scott’s product for red light therapy, first we need to make sure if we are not able to get enough natural sunlight. His products are more of a supplement. There are a couple of things you need to look out for when buying such a product. You need to make sure that the device you are using has been clinically proven to provide lights of certain wavelengths. You also need to look out for a device that provides enough power so your treatment times are short. You do not want to buy yourself a product and then go on to use it for hours in a day. How do you think your product can help us enhance our performance in our lives? Scott says he does not aim to treat for something general through his products. He primarily uses light therapy to deal with health-related issues. Scott says that most of the people who are into health and into performance, they make sure their diet is optimized, they want to make sure their sleep is optimized. If you are going to supplement with something, you want to make sure you supplement with the right things. Scott says one thing that always gets ignored in the process is the importance of light and its pivotal role in optimal health and performance. Has red light therapy shown any evidence to cure cancer? Scott says it is a question he has come across many times in recent times. He had the opportunity to co-author and publish a paper on light therapy and cancer. It was published in early 2018. At a high level, it does appear to show evidence to cure cancer. However, there is also some studies that showcase that light therapy can actually promote tumor growth because theoretically, you are helping the infected cells grow hence contributing in tumor growth. There is some conflicting research on this topic. What is the best advice you have ever been given? Within a business context, the best advice he has ever been given is the actually the concept of ready, fire and aim. Scott likes to invest his time and energy in startups, he likes to build up businesses from scratch. How can we connect with you? You can find more about Scott, his work and his products through his website. His website’s URL is: https://joovv.com

Ep. 315: The Scoop on Red Light and Infrared Therapy In this episode, Stacy and Sarah tackle red light and infrared therapy and whether it's true science or fake quackery!   Click here to listen in iTunes     If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 315: The Scoop on Red Light and Infrared Therapy Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Stacy went to the lake (and the boats stayed on the roof!) and has finally learned to stand and paddle her board! Sarah's kids have been at school for almost a month and she now has a middle schooler! Cole turned 13, so Stacy now has a teenager! School starts for her this week! This week's podcast is sponsored by Joov! If you want to check out Joov's light therapy boxes, visit https://joovv.com/paleoview Joovv is the main consumer product on the market that optimizes all the variables needed to hit that therapeutic window. Many other products out there use dosages and power outputs that are too low to achieve benefits, don’t use the right wavelengths, or don’t target large enough areas of our bodies (or better yet, target our entire body!). New FDA-approved electrostatic-coated LEDs that deliver even more intensity and have passed rigorous 3rd-party testing. Brand new modular design that lets you build a full-body Joovv system now—OR over time. The cool thing is that you can start with just one Joovv, and add on to it over time. Sort of like legos for light therapy! Lastly, all Joovvs now come with a cool built-in Bluetooth control that’s compatible with their new app as well as multiple connected home devices like Alexa and Google Home. “Alexa, I want to Joovv for 10 minutes.” Sarah loves hers and wants to build a whole room of them to stand in! Question from Terri: "I am considering purchasing a Red Light Therapy device...I have read about the sweet spots and the NM needed to be beneficial. I don't want to waste any money, so.....are they effective, or just a fad? I am most interested in skin rejuvenation, surface capillaries, joint and muscle effects. Thank You. Sarah, I value your advice. There are so many scam artists "out there"....hard to know what to believe!!!" Sarah believes in red light therapy because it's so well supported by scientific research! Dates back to the 1960s, when we discovered that low-level laser light caused mouse hair to grow back more quickly and also stimulated wound healing By the 1970s, low-level lasers on humans treated non-healing skin ulcers. Research on this therapy has grown to include various skin benefits (including wrinkle reduction!), weight loss, oral health improvement, improved muscle recovery, better sleep quality, enhanced thyroid health, reduced joint pain and inflammation Super well researched: over 3,000 published clinical studies on light therapy, including over 200 of them double-blinded, randomized, and placebo-controlled (the gold standard!). How does it work? It excites chromophores in your mitochondria and stimulates the energy chemical ATP to form! Induces transcription factors that play role in: protein synthesis, cytokine modulation, cell proliferation growth factors (muscle recovery, tissue repair, collagen formation), angiogenesis, tissue oxygenation, Endogenous antioxidant enzymes (SOD, iNOS), Liver regeneration, inflammatory mediators (pro and anti), CNS health (increases bone-derived neurotrophic factor) Immune cells are strongly affected by red light therapy, Strongly anti-inflammatory, Improves wound healing, Reverses age-related immune dysfunction, Promotes “M1-related immunoregulation” (immune balancing), Antiviral immunity, Antitumor immunity (inhibits tumor growth in studies), Pathogeneisis of autoimmune disease Effects on fibroblasts (collagen-forming cells), enhances production of basic fibroblast growth factor, increases the proliferation, maturity, and motility of fibroblasts (a type of cell that produces collagen and extracellular matrix). Resulting increase in collagen production responsible for much of the skin and joint benefits. Red light also decreases joint pain! Studies have found it to be a good alternative to NSAIDs! A study found that using red light therapy decreases the amount of thyroid medication needed Red and near infrared light has been shown to boost collagen, smooth wrinkles, enhance tone, boost healing and skin regeneration, reducing inflammation and cellular necrosis, and even combating acne. It helps with vitiligo, psoriasis, scars, and more! Existing research has shown that wavelengths of 635 nm can significantly reduce overall body circumference measurements of regions that have been spot-treated, including the waist, thighs, upper arms, and hips (and, studies are increasingly showing that these effects remain in place long-term!). There is an ideal wavelength for red light therapy. The best absorption by our tissues peaks in the ranges of 660-670 nm and 830-850 nm Currently, Joovv is the main consumer product on the market that optimizes all the variables needed to hit that therapeutic window. Many other products out there use dosages and power outputs that are too low to achieve benefits, don’t use the right wavelengths, or don’t target large enough areas of our bodies (or better yet, target our entire body!). His clients include Olympic athletes, special forces operators, entrepreneurs, and C-level executives from around the world. I invited Ryan onto the show as I’ve just finished reading his new book and loved it. In this episode, we talk about how you can change your physiology to improve your vagal tone (or HRV), with the ultimate aim of developing emotional resiliency. Ryan’s belief is that our physiology affects our thoughts, which affect our emotions and therefore our feelings. By changing our physiology, we can change our feelings. We also talk about the influence that gut health has on our thoughts and feelings, and how operating in your discomfort zone can increase resiliency and drive better performance.
