In this episode we have Eoin O Connor, a primary school teacher living in Melbourne. I chat to Eoin about The GAA out in Oz, a stressful visa situation, and a mad dash to escape extreme flooding on the way to Airlie beach.Eoin has so many brilliant stories from living out in Melbourne that this is just part one. The Fantasy/Animation podcast continues its involvement with the work of Pixar Animation Studios in this closer look at the computer-animated film Monsters, Inc. (2001) featuring Chris and Alex's first guest of the new season John Airlie, Associate Lecturer in Film and Media at Birkbeck University in London. Not only has John has taught courses across higher education related to gender and sexuality, but has, in his own words, also toiled in the world of publishing and book distribution. He now works for one of the major U.S. film companies in London, where he specialises in post production (localisation/dubbing) for international markets. Topics include the role of the voice in character animation and international dubbing practices as a form of adaptation; the interplay between the dubbed voice and stardom, and what it means for culturally-specifically stars to ‘match' the physicality of an ‘original' animated body; contemporary Hollywood animation and celebrity voicework; the politics of the animated cameo; and what Monsters, Inc. has to say about the power of the child's voice. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo**
Founder-led companies typically outperform their peers over the long term. Driven by a strong alignment of interest, a founder's long-term focus, and emotional dedication to a business's success, companies with founders at the helm are seen to be a safer bet than those with hired suits. Take Milford Asset Management, for example, which found the three-year performance of the founder-led stocks within their portfolio (23 companies) returned 24.9% per annum against the Small Ordinaries 2.7% to April 2024. Likewise, Solaris Investment Management found that over the last five years (from 2019 to 2024), the 12 largest founder-led companies on the ASX returned 420% while the benchmark accumulation index only returned 65%. So, in this episode, Livewire's Ally Selby was joined by two Hall of Fame fund managers in Ellerston's Chris Kourtis and Airlie's Matt Williams for their analysis of five founder-led companies. Are these bottom-drawer stocks, or should these founders get the boot? You'll find out in this episode of Buy Hold Sell. Note: This episode was recorded on Tuesday 8 October 2024. You can read the edited transcript below. https://www.livewiremarkets.com/wires/buy-hold-sell-5-founder-led-companies-on-the-rise
With decades of experience under their belts, it's fair to say that Ellerston's Chris Kourtis and Airlie's Matt Williams know a thing or two about investing. While their styles differ quite widely - Chris is a contrarian and Matt's all about quality and solid balance sheets - they both have their eyes keenly focused on their next opportunity. Interestingly, despite the different investment styles - valuation is one thing they can agree on - and make it clear that investors should take a fresh look at their portfolios and make sure they don't get caught out if we see a sell-off in the near future. Similarly, management is something that both our Hall of Fame fund managers are watching. However, while Matt is searching for businesses with teams that can execute well and help a stock soar, Chris is looking for missteps that could see the market punish a business far more than it should. So, in this episode, Livewire's Ally Selby sits down with Chris and Matt for their insights into how they are thinking about markets and the macro forces at play, as well as a deep dive into their strategies and what makes them tick. Plus, they also share one piece of advice so that investors can be successful over the next 12 months, and a stock that can help investors on their way. I should say this episode is quite long, so sit back, relax and get comfy. But then again, how often do you get to hear straight from two Hall of Fund managers in one episode? The week brings the drama, from kernel hackers retiring in frustration, to a panning take on COSMIC, to a high profile fork of a very popular database program. It's not all drama, as Linux celebrates an all-time high in market share, Microsoft's LinkedIn moves to Microsoft's Azure Linux, and the Mono project calls Wine its new home. What a week in Queenstown! The boys flew home the morning of recording and showed up to tell you all about the epic adventure they had on the NZ Flats: boarding, butchers and beers! Things kick off with a very special recap from Quinno about how he dusted his knee on his little holiday in Airlie, then we fly into YABBY PUMP'S WIN before recapping the NZ trip. Cooking With Daddy covers the age old debate of Australia VS NZ Pies before some hectic news stories: snakes biting sacks and our boy Gout Gout getting it done. A little bit of motivation before the chat around the Trendsetter meetup at Cowboys bar and then a wrapup from a couple of boys in The Doghouse. Time to knuckle down at HQ and get back in the groove. Hi Jay and Dave, can I vent my frustration? I work in the CBD of Airlie Beach and the amount of oversized SUV's and Utes that clog up the main street is ridiculous. How do your listeners feel about having a ban on these vehicles. They take up a big space and hard to navigate around. If not banned, then definitely a bigger parking fee for the drivers, if in paid parking. I think this would be a good solution for Airlie and Mackay CBD's." Kelsey, Cannonvale. Generative AI has changed the world of legal work forever! That's a big statement but, we're seeing proofs of concept daily in multiple services, products and solutions from all types of legal businesses. Those engaging with the tech are building the bridges from concept to implementation. It requires work and, in some cases, lots of it. It starts with getting everyone involved and, it won't end, ever – that's the exciting, exhausting and amazing part about it, this tech is very much about ongoing change, transformation and improvement/experimentation. In this session, in the Future 50 Series of the CLI Legalpreneurs Spotlight, we chatted with Lisa Kozaris, Chief Innovation and Legal Solutions Officer at Allens in Australia about all things emerging tech and how to implement it in a law firm. Lisa's background in law and curiosity about how it intersects with tech, has turned into a passion, dedication, and practical approach to inspiring others to embrace it. We spoke about some of the important factors to consider in the tech implementation journey like the need for clear guidelines about how to use it; the benefits of encouraging everyone, everywhere to engage with it; the opportunity to showcase talent and outcomes using a multi-disciplinary team collaborative approach to solutions; making sure people feel empowered and excited about unlocking their creativity; then taking time to review and reflect on what to take forward. Lisa and her team have established a blueprint for change, transformation and continuous improvement/experimentation for the firm. It's an inclusive measured approach, founded on a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities of tech but, at the same time, focussed squarely on next practices and creating a “new digital front door” for their clients. Airlie, Allens recently launched enterprise version of OpenAI's ChatGPT developed with Microsoft and built on Microsoft's Azure platform, is a recent case in point that we spoke about, and we're sure it definitely won't be the last! If you would prefer to watch rather than listen to this podcast, you'll find the video here. In today's episode, I hosted Jord Chen on the podcast for the second time. Jord is a great friend of mine who lives on the Gold Coast. He's an entrepreneur and ultra-runner, who is one of the most disciplined and consistent people I've ever met. This wasn't a planned podcast, but after living with Jord for a few days and seeing his habits and good practices, I thought it would be good to jump on for a quick chat about that because I believe many of us can get better at doing the basics well, like quality nutrition, daily movement, and sleep. To learn more about Jord and his running, listen to episode 5, where we deep-dived into what he loves about running, why he does it, what running has taught him, and some of the big things he's achieved like 33 marathons in 33 days. One thing we forgot to mention in this conversation is there are no Ubers in Airlie! You'll understand why I mention this because this is why we had to hitchhike with Ken to get to our Hamilton Island Half Marathon. It's worth noting that as an entrepreneur Jord has a bit more flexibility with his day than perhaps what you may have if you work a 9-5. However, regardless of what you do for work, I believe can all work smarter, move more, eat better, and be healthier overall, and I saw firsthand Jord's work ethic, he really just does the work. He takes accountability and gets shit done.Self-improvement is an ongoing endeavor that requires consistent effort throughout our lives. Steph became friends with Tracey through their mother's group - you may remember her from a previous KICBUMP episode titled "Postpartum, poop and prams" with another friend Emma. In today's episode, Steph wanted to chat to Tracey about something that almost none of us have experienced but so many of us are curious about or at the very least fascinated by - home births. Tracey's story is just incredible. She birthed her 4 month old son Airlie at home (which was planned), but without any midwives present (which was definitely unplanned)! Hear how she educated herself on home births, what she equipped herself with in the lead up, how she attained her midwives and her advice for any mums looking at this as an option for their birth plan. And on another note, we love hearing your 'Toddler Tantrum Tales'! In tomorrow's episode of The Rules of Investing, I sit down with Hall of Famer Matt Williams - a portfolio manager at Airlie Funds Management. Matt runs Airlie's Aussie share fund. We cover a lot of ground, including the way he views today's market, where Airlie's deploying capital, and the one company born to be in Warren Buffett's portfolio.
When volatility strikes, investors invariably become more reflexive and less disciplined. But investing with reckless abandon is almost certainly going to lead to bad outcomes. Experienced investors stick to the game plan - a game plan borne of experience and a process that's been tried and tested through the full business cycle. On today's episode of The Rules of Investing, David Thornton sits down with Matt Williams from Airlie Funds Management. Matt cut his teeth in 1993 when he joined Perpetual Investments as an equities dealer. That was followed by 17 years at Perpetual, working alongside heavy hitters including Anton Tagliaferro, Peter Morgan, and John Sevior. There he held the role of head of equities from 2011 to 2015. He joined Airlie in 2016, with a remit that includes Australian share strategies for institutional clients and the Airlie Australian Share Fund for retail clients. This year, Matt was recognised as one of the best in the business and inducted into the Hall of Fame, joining a small and distinguished list of Australia's best fundies (including the three Perpetual alumni mentioned above). While people may debate the independence of broker research, one thing they do boast is access. Access to company management, to information and data that you may not be able to get your hands on, like expensive FactSet or Bloomberg terminals, analyst reports and free lunches, to name a few. And while the old proverb states that there truly is no such thing as a free lunch, our brokers may have a leg up when it comes to company analysis. So, in this episode of Buy Hold Sell, we've invited Airlie's Emma Fisher and Sage Capital's Kelli Meagher to share their thoughts on five stocks the brokers are backing. These include Star Entertainment Group, Bapcor, James Hardie, Ansell and Metcash, all of which receive resounding "buys" or "strong buys" from Australia's sell-side. But will our fundies agree? You'll just have to watch the episode to find out. Note: This episode was filmed using Zoom on the 18th of August 2021. You can read an edited transcript below: https://www.livewiremarkets.com/wires/buy-hold-sell-5-stocks-the-brokers-are-backing/

Truly special businesses don't come along very often. Those with enduring competitive advantages, the ability to grow for long periods and produce high returns on capital. When you find a rare business like this, it's important to think long term, and “hitch your wagon to those economics”, says Emma Fisher, Portfolio Manager and Head of Research at Airlie Funds Management. That's exactly what she did when making her first recommendation as an analyst back in 2013. As the time, CSL was trading around $60 per share. She continued following the company, and when starting at Airlie in 2016, advocated holding the stock across their portfolio. Her patience and commitment have paid off, with CSL up nearly five times from her initial recommendation, and three times since 2016. But today CSL faces new challenges in a COVID-affected USA. In this episode of The Rules of Investing podcast, we discuss those challenges and how CSL is placed to navigate them. We also hear why markets are underestimating Aussie retailers yet again, and we learn about an Aussie small cap powering ahead on its Formula 1 credentials.
This week, I catch up with rural mum Airlie Landale. When Airlie finished school, her family's farm was deep in the millennium drought. After seeing the toll it took on her parents, Airlie left, and never considered a career in ag or a life on the land. But things changed! Airlie is the founder of Farm Table; an online ecosystem for the agriculture industry. It's a business she recently gave up to prioritise being a mum, amongst other projects. Airlie tells it like it is, and she's found early motherhood incredibly tough. But so is she. This is her story. Welcome to Episode 21 – Today's guest is someone who is having an incredible and positive impact across agriculture and rural Australia. She's someone who is so honest and authentic and what you see is what you get. To me, Airlie Landale is one of the most humble and highly intelligent people I have come across and it's an absolute pleasure to speak with her today. In 2014, she created a database as she began to follow her dream of working hand in hand with her father to learn the ropes of the family business. Little did she know, what she was cultivating would go on to fill one of the biggest resource deficits and play a crucial role in the modernisation of farming businesses across the country – providing them with a single platform for information and connect them in a central place. Today we cover a bit of that story to date, and I feel we only just scraped the surface! - We talk about living the side hustle game & building a business on the side of your day job. - The 'paralysation with perfection' that our society creates with such a fear of failure - We talk about her recent appointment to the board of Rural Aid and the thought process, the moments of self doubt and realising what it is you bring to the table - We talk about the male vs female founders and how Airlie thinks she would've gone raising capital - Probably my favourite part of this chat is where I ask Airlie the advice she would give to young women in Year 10/11 at school about entering the agriculture industry but also life more generally. You find Airlie at www.farmtable.com.au or on all the socials at Farm Table Au or on LinkedIn as Airlie Landale More on Rural aid @ www.ruralaid.org.au Follow us on instagram @HumansofAgriculture or reach out to me directly oli@humansofagriculture.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/humans-of-agriculture/message

But do you know how the festival came to be and how it has evolved over time? In this special off-season episode of Cape Fear Unearthed, we dig for the roots of the festival, why it has persisted and the many famous faces that have attended over 70 years. Cape Fear Unearthed is written, edited and hosted by Hunter Ingram. Additional editing by Adam Fish. Recorded at WHQR in downtown Wilmington. A StarNews Media Production. Airlie Anderson (@airliebird) is the author illustrator of NEITHER, a new picture book about a creature who is not this or that, but neither. It's a story of finding a place to belong, a place to feel welcome. It's also a story about making room for others who may be different from you. But one of the book's most powerful qualities is the space left for the reader to make his or her own connections, to see his or her own this, that, and neither. And for adults to do the same. You can access even more information about this book and its author illustrator by visiting www.matthewcwinner.com/podcast.

We explore how we work from the inside out. In this episode of in the company talk with Ally Watson, co-founder of Code Like A Girl, with a degree in computer science Ally has for the last seven years building websites and apps, and four years ago moved from her homeland of Airlie, Scotland, leaving behind her established professional networks to start over. It was in this transition she acutely felt the anxiety of not only being a newcomer but also often being the only woman in her team or at an industry networking event. This spurred her to create her own tech events for girls and to create a social enterprise to close the gender gap in a male-dominated industry. We talk about knowing when to pivot, making a side gig a full-time gig, going from an employee to a manager, and why it’s important to have more women and girls in tech.
