I am delighted to reconnect with Lance Essihos today! He was with me once before on Episode 69, back in 2018. Lance is a Canadian traveler who made it his life's mission to help heal the world through the art of powerful storytelling and human connection. He is the host of the top-rated podcast, University of Adversity, which I have been honored to be on twice. In his new book, Mastering Adversity, Lance explores the quest for personal growth, leveling up, and healing. He believes that true mastery is an ongoing process and there will always be new challenges at every level of growth. Writing the book was challenging, and he is grateful to have completed it. He found sharing his thoughts with the world- especially his family, a tough yet transformative experience. In this episode, Lance talks about his book and dives into the transformational experience of how adversity shaped his life. We discuss his craving for personal growth and meaning and get into how our internal narrative can influence how we perceive the world. We also speak about masculine and feminine energy, why we must embrace the history of trauma, and how doing that can be a powerful motivator for health and change. I truly hope you will gain from today's discussion and enjoy listening to it as much as I did recording it! IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: How adversity has impacted all of us. How to deal with uncomfortable feelings. Why do most people get stuck in their stories? What is trauma, and how does it impact us? What makes us more vulnerable to trauma? Dealing with anxiety and addiction. How personal development work changes our relationships with others. Intermittent fasting in any aspect of life. Where does people-pleasing come from? Are you distracting or disconnecting from any of eight specific emotions -- sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration or vulnerability— or are you allowing yourself to feel them? The suppression of unpleasant feelings results in avoidance or distracting coping behaviors that undermine our confidence, emotional health and stability, relationships, professional success and our ability to fully realize our ambitions. Instead of simply feeling an unpleasant emotion, we create workarounds—and those are the distractions and avoidances that limit our fulfillment. Some of those distractions include negative self-talk; anxiety; addiction; and difficulty expressing ourselves fully, setting boundaries or realizing dreams that could be tantalizingly close. Today's special guest, Joan Rosenberg, Ph.D, author of 90 Secondes to a Life You Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience and Authenticity and an innovative and leading-edge psychologist with 40 years of clinical practice combining neuroscience and cognitive and emotion-focused therapyhas found that confidence has everything to do with your ability to know you can handle unpleasant emotions. As a three-time TEDx speaker and member of the Association of Transformational Leaders, she has been recognized for her innovative Emotional Mastery / confidence-building approach, and for her thought leadership and global influence in personal development. Dr. Rosenberg has served as a mental health media consultant for documentaries, print, radio, television, and digital outlets. She is a professor of psychology at Pepperdine University. In this episode we address: * The Rosenberg reset: The 90 sec formula= One choice, Eight feelings for 90 seconds. The one choice is to be aware, versus avoiding. * To stay present. See we do pleasant well. We need to lean into the unpleasant. The key is to be able to stay present and ‘tolerate' the eight pleasant feelings. * Why eight? Because they are the most common feelings we experience when things don't turn out our way. The eight are: sadness shame helplessness anger vulnerability embarrassment disappointment frustration * The 90 seconds is based on neuroscience. When we have a feeling, they fire off body chemistry, which activates body sensations. When we flood, the bloodstream, via this causation of a feeling. By the time we flood the chemistry and flush it out is roughly 90 seconds. So all you have to do is stay present. Then you get access to your full capacity of feelings. * Your breath (the way in which you breathe) informs your body if you are safe or not * 3 main ways the keep unpleasant feelings to linger (drag out) 1) focus on what you don't want 2) repeat the thoughts and or memories that recreate the feelings 3) harsh self-criticism * Conscious languaging examples starting with 'phraseology' -if you begin your verbal ques with these types of questions am I?, can I? do I?, will I?- you only foster doubt. When you change the syntax (the order of the words) then you make them declarative statements and this puts you back in the driver seat- I am, I can, I do, I will – "Can I really pull this off?" – "Can I achieve what I want to achieve?" – "Do I have what it takes to succeed?" – "Will I be able to deliver a good presentation?" – "Will I do a good job?" – "Will I be well-liked?" – "Am I going to be able to complete this project?" – "Am I good enough?" We've got all the lights on, we're watching a crime drama … We just do not tell our body it's safe to sleep.” — Shae Leonard “If we want energy and we want to feel fueled, and we want to have proper mood resilience, we have to eat whole foods. Our body just functions on them. That's it. It does not function on the modern food we're trying to consume.” — Shae Leonard “Just start enjoying and allowing yourself to feel those positive emotions. Visualize it. Spend that time day-to-day training your brain. We have to do it every day. We can't just have meditation once a month or once a year and expect our brain to respond well” — Shae Leonard “[Learn] to shift that perspective and lean into the discomfort … get to failure quicker. … Don't be afraid of it. Just learn that it's a part of the process. … You can act, learn, and adjust through [it] and keep moving.” — Shae Leonard “[Pushing] through those fears and limiting beliefs … was a game-changer for me.” — Shae Leonard

Mental health is an incredibly important topic that has a critical role in our day to day lives, but one we are still not having enough open conversations about. And not only do I think we’re not talking about it, I believe we’re missing out on valuable insights from experts who can really educate us on it—because it’s way more nuanced than it seems. One topic in particular that requires more conversation is therapy, and specifically how it can benefit us, both personally and professionally. It might not be obvious (I know it wasn’t to me!), but therapy isn’t just for when you hit rock bottom—it’s actually a way to optimize your brain, which also helps you optimize your business, which is why I’m very excited for this week’s episode of Beyond Influential. If you’ve ever experienced any of the common “mindset” issues that come up for entrepreneurs around worthiness, money mindset, imposter syndrome, perfectionism—you may have considered hiring a coach, but in reality, the best “hire” is actually a therapist. One of the experts who has been educating me happens to be my own brother, Dr. Jordan Hoffman, who is a clinical psychologist with expertise on how therapy shapes the brain, and a specialization in improving the results people get from therapy. He has experience working with individuals of all ages and all backgrounds, from NFL and NBA athletes to children and adolescents to working on Skid Row with the homeless population. I always walk away from our conversations with new insights, which is why I’m excited to have him on the show this week to share his knowledge and expertise with you. On Ep. 146, we cover: Therapy: What it really is, and why and when you should consider it How to find the right therapist for you: Where to look, questions to ask, red flags to watch out for, and how to know if treatment is effective Types of therapy and different approaches to treatment The pros and cons of in-person vs. remote therapy Coaching vs. Therapy: What’s the difference and how to know which one you need Mental health resources, book recommendations, and more! I'm sitting in an audience of 200 other public speakers waiting to hear from Broadway playwright and performer, Bo Eason. He is brilliant. When he's on stage I ignore my cell phone entirely (which says a lot coming from a millennial). He walks on stage, puts his arm around Joan Rosenberg and says “if you want to be an incredible public speaker, you need therapy. You need a therapist on your team to help you process the pressure and the ego it takes to do this for the long haul. You are here to GIVE to the audience, not take. You don't need the audience to give psychologically and emotionally to you. You need to give to THEM. Get a therapist to take care of yourself so you can truly take care of others.” Ever since that moment, nearly five years ago, I've been grateful for my weekly appointment with my therapist. It has become an anchor for my week and how I show up for the people in my life. I am so grateful for this unexpected (and strange) advice from Bo! And as a little holiday gift from me to you, I figured it was about time I introduced you to Joan. She's not my therapist, but she's the therapist to a who's who list of celebrities and someone I have deeply admired for a long time. What often blocks most people from success and feeling capable in life is the ability to experience, move through, and handle unpleasant feelings, such as sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, and vulnerability. Knowing how to deal with intense, overwhelming, or uncomfortable feelings is essential to building confidence, emotional strength, and resilience. Yet when we distract or disconnect from these feelings, we move away from confidence, health, and our desired pursuits, ultimately undermining our ability to fully realize our ambitions. On today’s Broken Brain Podcast, our host, Dhru, talks to Dr. Joan Rosenberg, a psychologist who is known as an innovative thinker, acclaimed speaker, and trainer. Her latest book, 90 Seconds to a Life you Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience and Authenticity, was released February 2019. In this episode, we talk about Joan's latest book: 90 Seconds to a Life you Love. Sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, embarrassment, disappointment, frustration, and vulnerability. In 30 years as a practicing psychologist, Dr. Joan Rosenberg has found that what most often blocks people from success and feeling capable in life is the inability to experience, move through, and handle these 8 unpleasant feelings. Neuroscientists suggest that the biological lifespan of a feeling, often known first through bodily sensations, lasts approximately 90 seconds. Dr. Rosenberg teaches readers to be aware, consciously lean into, and balance these unpleasant emotions by riding one or more 90-second waves of the bodily sensations. By staying present to these 8 feelings, we cultivate the confidence that we can handle life's challenges and the deep sense we can pursue whatever we want. You can purchase Dr. Joan's book here. In today’s episode, I’m happy to introduce you to a truly extraordinary guest, Dr. Joan Rosenberg. Joan’s work around emotional intelligence and resilience is truly life-changing. As we acknowledge in the interview, her latest book 90 seconds To A Live You Love is about even more than that, it’s about connecting ourselves with who we truly are and allowing us to consciously know what we already know. Dr. Rosenberg is a cutting-edge, California-licensed psychologist. She is a best-selling author, two time Tedx speaker has been featured in the documentaries “I Am”, “The Miracle Mindset”, “Pursuing Happiness” and “The Hidden Epidemic”. She’s been seen on CNN’s American Morning, and ABC, CBS, FOX, PBS and OWN networks. Dr. Rosenberg speaks on how to build confidence, emotional strength, and resilience. She walks us through the “Rosenberg Reset” method and how to sit with the uncomfortable emotions to find awareness instead of avoidance as so many of us do. Dr. Rosenberg also shares some personal experiences from her childhood that included feeling rejected and left out, and how these moments have influenced and guided her to the work that she does now. “Think, speak, and act, only in the direction that you wish to go..” ~ Dr. Joan Rosenberg This is an extremely important conversation at any time, and yet even more so now given what our world is currently facing. We are dealing with so many uncomfortable emotions, often many at the same time, and I truly believe that now is the time to face them and allow them to move through us instead of avoiding them or distracting ourselves from knowing what we know. To move out of the Waiting Room and into the next phase of life, this is the work. This conversation left me with more ah-ha moments than I can count, I do hope you will take the time to listen and share with those you love. Please share your insights and everything you got out of this one of a kind conversation. If you are needing support during this pandemic, I invite you to join my free Facebook Group that I have created for you. It is so important to me that we are ready to exit the Waiting Room when it’s time to re-enter our new lives on the other side of this. I want to share with you a topic that’s been on my mind a lot over the last few weeks: mental health. For context, most people are currently staying home, social distancing, and many cities are mandating mandatory face covering for the time being. I’ve been pretty much inside full-time for the last 8 weeks - and it’s crazy to think 2 months has already passed. Whether you are used to working from home or not, everyone has had to make adjustments. It’s one thing to have calculated risks in your business, it’s another to experience change at this scale. We are in a time of universal, global change, whether it’s changes to your marketing, your offerings, your physical workspace, your workout routine, your diet, your family dynamic, your social life - all of the above and more. And on top of that, everyone reacts differently so you might be seeing all sorts of different responses and reactions from the people you know. There is no standard way to feel right now and it’s had me thinking a lot about how to stay mentally healthy during this time and also how to increase resilience in the face of unpleasant emotions. When it comes to your mental well-being, I want to make sure you hear advice from an expert who is qualified to be giving it. Dr. Joan Rosenberg is a best-selling author, speaker, and educator with decades of experience as a licensed psychologist specializing in the subject of how to develop confidence and not only that, but how to handle unpleasant feelings. Her book, 90 Seconds to a Life You Love was my favorite of 2019 and I’ve been revisiting it now because it is dedicated to the topics of how to work through difficult and unpleasant feelings to allow you to create confidence and the outcomes you want. With that Dr. Rosenberg will be teaching a LIVE training followed by Q&A in the Beyond Influential Insiders Membership next Tuesday, April 14th. While the official launch of the membership won’t be for a couple weeks, I want to give you a chance to hop in early so you don’t miss out on the opportunity to hear teach on “Developing Unshakeable Confidence for Entrepreneurs” and ask her any questions you might have around mindset and mental health. I am opening the doors starting today until April 13th at Midnight PST and offering a special discount for the first month. Is entrepreneurship the right path for you??? Whether you already own a business or not, you’ll find value in this week’s episode. This Beyond Influential community is very entrepreneurial, and I speak to a lot of people who are just starting their entrepreneurial journey, want to get started, or are trying to make the leap from side hustle to full time—and they all ask what I wish I had known when I started, any huge lessons I learned, and to just be honest with them about what the entrepreneurial life is actually like. The message on social media is that entrepreneurship is glamorous. It can be at times… but that’s not the case the majority of the time. Starting a business is easy; staying in business is not. Being successful in anything in life–whether it’s in business or personal branding–is really a mental game. On Beyond Influential Episode #113, I share the 5 questions to ask yourself to know if you’re really ready to be an entrepreneur, and if it’s the right path for you. And if you already own a business, this episode is worth listening to because businesses and their owners do evolve over time, and you need to keep asking yourself these questions to help you stay on track with your goals. My guest this week is Dr. Joan Rosenberg, best-selling author, consultant, master clinician, and media host. Dr. Joan Rosenberg is a cutting-edge psychologist who is known as an innovative thinker, acclaimed speaker, and trainer. As a two-time TEDx speaker and member of the Association of Transformational Leaders, she has been recognized for her thought leadership and influence in personal development. Dr. Rosenberg speaks on how to build confidence, emotional strength, resilience; achieving emotional, conversational and relationship mastery; integrating neuroscience and psychotherapy and suicide prevention. An Air Force veteran, she is a professor of graduate psychology at Pepperdine University in Los Angeles, CA. Her latest book, 90 Seconds to a Life you Love: How to Master Your Difficult Feelings to Cultivate Lasting Confidence, Resilience and Authenticity, has just released at the beginning of this year. In this episode, Dr. Rosenberg and I discuss the “top 8 unpleasant feelings” that parents encounter. She provides parents with practical strategies that teach enhanced emotional self-insight and lead to better parent-child relationships. Using these strategies empowers parents to manage their feelings, control their reactions and become better emotional role models for their children. Learn more about Dr. Joan Rosenberg here. The Top 8 Unpleasant Feelings Sadness, shame, helplessness, anger, vulnerability, embarrassment, disappointment, and frustration. These 8 feelings are common and universal to everyone's experiences With these strategies, parents can be healthy role models of these feelings for their children Both pleasant and unpleasant feelings are important for children to understand and develop versus feeling restricted or withdrawn from certain feelings What is Frustration Tolerance? The ability to experience and manage the right emotion in any situation If a child does not learn to experience and manage their feelings, a clear carry-over effect into adulthood occurs Examples: not handling relationship breakups well, poor handling of employment settings and emotions, etc… It is important for parents to be able to tolerate their child's emotional discomfort as well as their own How to Manage Feelings As Parents Use the formula: One choice + 8 Feelings + 90 Seconds The choice is an openness and willingness to be aware of and in touch with as much of your feelings as possible Detect one of the 8 feelings and be present Give yourself 90 seconds to understand what you are feeling through bodily sensation The rush of these feelings and bodily reactions typically last 60-90 seconds Notice what you are experiencing in your body, tolerate the bodily sensation and ride the wave to the other side of the 90 seconds before reacting I.e. the heat of cheeks flushing from embarrassment By staying present to the feeling and bodily sensation you will gain insight on the decision you need to make and the action you want to take Understanding Anxiety When we talk about anxiety we must decipher and be aware of how and when we use the word to define a specific feeling Anxiety is oftentimes used to describe other feelings such as vulnerability and fear In this way, the word “anxiety” is misused as a cover for other unpleasant feelings that are actually occurring Switching Up Your Language As A Parent Am I? Can I? Will I? Do I? All of these foster doubt Switch those questions and reframe them to statements: I am, I can, I will, I do All of these foster an experience of confidence Understanding Resilience Know that resilience is a learnable skill that we can all practice and improve Think of resilience as being tied to attitude: “I'm open to change” Having an openness and willingness to face change is a key aspect Understand that “failure” too is a key aspect and is always a learning opportunity This way you do not get knocked over each time you face an obstacle Reach out of help and use your resourcefulness Acknowledge your emotional needs and limitations so you know when you need to ask for help shows your emotional strength Where to learn more about Dr. Joan Rosenberg...
