How we can learn to change our relationship to our thoughts. I have always believed in looking to other sports to see what we can learn to bring to our own sport. Often when we look outside the confines of our own world we can gain so much. So today it is great to welcome on to the Brain Booster Pat Flynn from the world of tennis. Pat's life story is an incredible one As a junior he was the Australian Junior Tennis Champion and went on to earn a scholarship at the University of Texas, Austin. After the college career he went on to play professionally, reaching 390 in the world and winning the Queensland Hardcourt Championships. After his playing career, he coached both on the professional tour and as a Tennis Australia state coach. More recently, his love of the game drew him back to competing, resulting in him becoming the Australian 50+ Seniors Champion and recently became one of the oldest players in the world to qualify for a Pro Tour Event, defeating a world ranked player in the process. Throughout his journey, he has had a passion for the importance of the mental parts of the game and how it can positively influence our lives both on and off the court. This passion later led Pat to seek out Dr Anthony Ross and undergo his MTT training and become a certified Mentally Tough Tennis Performance Consultant. We look into the importance of early development and the way to get the best out of your time What we can learn from the time intervals in tennis and how we can use these insights for our golf The ability to get back to the moment and to RESET for this point in this moment The importance of good body language and how the body is always talking to our mind The ability to have your attention on RELEVANT cues in the present moment Pat present a useful model of how the mind works Imagine the mind is made up of three parts: Automatic Thoughts and Feelings (ATFs) – The ATFs pop into the head and body automatically based on previous experience and genetic factors. Disciple Up # 169 Colossians Part 8 The Christ Centered Family By Louie Marsh, 7-22-2020   An airline pilot wrote that on this particular flight he had hammered his ship into the runway really hard. The airline had a policy which required the first officer to stand at the door while the passengers exited, give a smile, and a "Thanks for flying XYZ airline." He said that in light of his bad landing, he had a hard time looking the passengers in the eye, thinking that someone would have a smart comment. Finally everyone had gotten off except for this little old lady walking with a cane. She said, "Sonny, mind if I ask you a question?" "Why no Ma'am," said the pilot, "what is it?" The little old lady said, "Did we land or were we shot down?"   Two Facts About Submission:   1) Submitting is always a REACTION.   2) Wives submit THEMSELVES – they aren't forced into it.   Wives, be constantly subjecting yourselves to your husbands…Wuest   How Husbands Should Act.   1) LOVE your wife by doing what's best for HER!   And you husbands must love your wives and never treat them harshly. Col. 3:19 (NLT)   25  Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26  that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27  so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28  In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. Hosea 11:1   3) DON'T rely on emotion!   Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. 1 Cor. 13:7 (NLT)   Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?   Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.   Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.  Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.   Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardship of the Revolutionary War.   They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.   What kind of men were they?   Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy.  He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.   At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire.  The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.   Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.  The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.   John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.  Their 13 children fled for their lives.  His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste.  For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.  A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.   4) Be GENTLE!   How Wives Should Act.   1) SUBMIT to your husband by PUTTING HIM FIRST.    Wives, understand and support your husbands by submitting to them in ways that honor the Master. Col. 3:18   2) Treat your husband with RESPECT!   Nevertheless let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respects her husband. Eph. 5:33 (NASB)   How Parents and Children Should Act.   Children: OBEY your parents!   Children, do what your parents tell you. This delights the Master no end. Col. 3:20 (Message)   2) Parents: Treat Your Kids RESPECTFULLY, and ENCOURAGE them!   Fathers, don't aggravate your children. If you do, they will become discouraged and quit trying. Col. 3:21 (NLT)   How We Should Work.   1) REALIZE that work is spiritual!   Work hard and cheerfully at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Col. 3:23 NLT)   2) SERVE  Christ – you're really working for him.   remembering that it is the Lord Christ who is going to pay you, giving you your full portion of all he owns. He is the one you are really working for. And if you don't do your best for him, he will pay you in a way that you won't like--for he has no special favorites who can get away with shirking. Col. 3:24-25 (LB)   3) BE FAIR to those who work under you.   And masters, treat your servants considerately. Be fair with them. Don't forget for a minute that you, too, serve a Master—God in heaven.  Col. 4:1 (Message)

NICK WALKER:  Every one. BILL YATES:  Every one. NICK WALKER:  Okay.  Okay.  I can't wait. BILL YATES:  This one could run long. Meet Bruce NICK WALKER:  So our guest is Bruce Weinstein, known as “The Ethics Guy” he shows organizations around the world how ethical leadership is the key to sustained success.  Bruce has a Ph.D. in philosophy, with a concentration in bioethics.  He's an ethics and leadership speaker and trainer.  He's also appeared more than 200 times on national and international news programs, and he writes a leadership column for Forbes.com. His books include “Ethical Intelligence: Five Principles for Untangling Your Toughest Problems at Work and Beyond”, “The Good Ones: Ten Crucial Qualities of High-Character Employees”, and, for tweens and teens, “Is It Still Cheating if I Don't Get Caught?”  Ethics and an Ethicist BILL YATES:  Bruce, one of the first things I've got to ask you is this fancy word “ethicist.”  So give us a definition for an ethicist, and then how did you decide you wanted to become one? BRUCE WEINSTEIN:  Well, an ethicist is someone who teaches ethics for a living. And so that strange word that no one can pronounce or spell is the reason why I decided to call myself “The Ethics Guy” and trademark it because that's something that everyone can say. And I think it conveys a sense of, you know, ethics is really for everyone, and so it shouldn't be solely the domain of academics. BILL YATES:  Okay, so one of the definitions I saw for ethics, and this may have been in your book, was to identify right conduct and good behavior.  Is that a good working definition? BRUCE WEINSTEIN:  So, there are essentially two questions that ethics seeks to answer:  what should I do, and who should I be? And the first focuses on conduct or behavior, and it appeals to the principles that I'll be talking about here today, the principles of ethical intelligence.  And it's almost like solving a puzzle, what should I do here, in this case, with these facts, at this time? 3 Invaluable Lessons from David Niese You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time. If your project staff is happy, everything starts falling into place. It’s not enough to just be right – you need to spend more time on collaboration and listen to what people are saying and what is going on.   This week, host Sue Dyer speaks with David Niese about effectively implementing partnering within your team and organization and why taking the hardline when it comes to managing projects doesn’t always yield a positive outcome. About Guest David Niese (1:16) David Niese was one of the trainers for the Caltrans Fundamentals of Partnering. David helped train over 4,000 different project professionals on the fundamentals of making Partnering work on Caltrans projects. David is a Project Executive at Granite Construction in their large project group.   David’s Journey to Becoming Project Executive at Granite Construction (2:50) David grew up in the industry and did a lot of surveying with his dad He got a job at a small engineering firm in San Bernadino, CA He worked with Caltrans for 15 years and then jumped to the private industry For the last five years, David has been at Granite Construction   How David Went from SOB to Collaborative Leader (5:50) In his first job as a Resident Engineer, David was a hardliner. He expected his contractor to know what he was supposed to do, and David stuck to the contract.  In the end, his contractor went bankrupt and in stepped a new company.    David learned that you can hold a contractor to the contract, but it is bad for business; but all the contractors start spending more money.  It costs the owner more money if they have to deal with a lot of claims.  There are always things we can do to help each other on the contract.    If the project staff is happy on both sides, everything just falls into place.  Your quality is better, your safety is better, your production rates are better because everyone is happy coming to work.  Everyone is working toward the common goal of finishing the project. David’s Advice to Someone Who’s Just Starting Their Career (15:15) Don’t let the daily grind keep you from seeing the big picture When you focus on the little things only, you don’t fully understand what the ramifications might be A mentor is extremely important to have the right perspective   How to Lead Your Team When There’s Conflict (17:30) Have your partnering process in place, be sure that you listen and understand the position of other people You can help other people out and get what you need at the same time Listen to see where the conflict might be coming from and to figure out how you can avoid it Using a facilitator can really help   What People Can Do to Lead Their Team When It’s Struggling (19:45) The Escalation Ladder can be a huge help with things - go up the chain so you can relieve yourself and others from having to worry about the issue The person at the next level of escalation will probably have a different view on the problem Don’t take things personally, there will always be contract disputes Don’t let conflict affect the work going on in the field Looking for a fair and equitable resolution to the problem is doing your job   David’s Approach to His Projects with Alternative Processes (25:23) In the bid/build world there is no qualification process, but in the alternative delivery world, your past performances will affect you getting future work. If you’re going up a company that had no claims and you did, that will put you at a disadvantage. Your ability to successfully complete a contract becomes important in alternative delivery.   What David Would Do if He Had an Owner Who Was Not Going to Be Fair and Equitable (27:48) If there is an owner with a reputation for not resolving disputes, they choose not to work with those owners. There’s so much work out there, they get to pick and choose who they do and don’t want to work with. You need to look for an owner who will match your core values.   How David Overcame the Very Worst Moment He Faced (29:07) The worst moment was also his worst Partnering ever. There were many disputes, but he didn’t let the contract disputes affect the quality of the work they were doing in the field. In the next project they understood what to do and not do to never let that happen again. He tries not to override subordinates in the escalation ladder and resolve at the lowest level possible.   David’s Zone of Genius (31:49) A manager should not be judged on how they manage the “A” players.  A true manager can take the “C” players and turn them into “B” players and take the “B” players and turn them into “A” players. You have to keep things from becoming a stumbling block. David is good at looking for future problems down the road and letting employees know before they get there. Always have a contingency plan in place.   The Best Advice David’s Ever Received (35:19) It’s not enough to just be right. My guest this week is British Eventer Lucinda Green who at 66 has not lost one ounce of her passion and dedication to horses and horse sport. Lucinda epitomizes being a sportswoman whether she is training horses or coaching riders around the world or competing on her only horse. She began riding at the age of four but didn’t own her own horse until she was 15. Be Fair proved to be a birthday present that would launch her career and their partnership forever be carved in the history books of the sport.  They made their Olympic debut in 1973 and this was only the beginning of Lucinda‘s success, as she went on to claim a number of gold and silver medals and two European Championships. In 1977 Lucinda scored a hat trick, coming first at Badminton, Burghley and the European Championships. She is the only rider to have won the prestigious Badminton six times, on six different horses from 1973 to 1984. Lucinda has won the Tony Collins Trophy, awarded to the rider with the most British Eventing points in an eventing season, a record seven times and in 2008 won the outstanding contribution to equestrianism award. No-one has done more to promote the sport and influence generations of event riders than Lucinda in her role as British Team Selector, Coach, Trainer and Journalist.  Lucinda still competes on her one horse and has no groom to help her, instead she enjoys the sport with the same enthusiasm as she did some 50 years ago. He was once a child actor, starring in such hit shows as Are You Afraid Of The Dark and Student Bodies. Since the late 1960's at least 18 women have disappeared or been murdered along a 724 kilometre stretch of Highway 16 in Northern British Columbia. That road of highway has become known as the Highway Of Tears. Highway Of Tears is also the name of a documentary by Matt Smiley that looks at the plight of those women and many other Aboriginal woman who have simply disappeared. Stuart Nulman is on with another edition of Book Banter.  This week’s reviewed book is Saturday Night Live: The Book written by Alison Castle, (Taschen, $49.99).
