For a very long time humans have been getting sick. Sometimes we have gotten sick more easily than at other times. From time to time we get sick from things a human body has never before encountered. Sickness is always present with us. And while injury we can understand–like breaking a leg, or having a rock hit your head–sickness can be as mysterious to people in 2026 who trust the science as it was to our ancestors 4,000 years ago. “Why did one patient heal,” my guest Susan Wise Bauer writes, “while another rotted? And what about the shivering, miserable sufferer who simply awoke with a sore throat and cough, after going to bed healthy and filled with plans the night before? It is the constant presence of sickness, not injury, that has shaped the way we think about ourselves and our world.”Susan Wise Bauer's books include The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home (fourth ed., 2024) and The Story of Western Science: From the Writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang Theory. Her most recent book is The Great Shadow: A History of How Sickness Shapes What We Do, Think, Believe, and Buy. 0:00 Introduction 1:45 What This Book Is and Isn't 4:35 Did Hunter-Gatherers Get Sick? 9:50 Guilt and Sickness 14:00 Doctors as Priests 21:30 The Four Humors 25:15 Humoral Theory and Colonialism 29:45 Occasionalism: God's Will and Disease 35:55 The Black Death 40:45 The History of Drugs 45:50 Vaccines: Jenner and Cowpox 50:30 The Early 20th Century: Disease Returns 54:25 The Pax Antibiotica 58:30 Wellness Culture 61:45 COVID and What Hasn't Changed 67:15 Closing

Dweebs was a short-lived CBS sitcom that premiered in 1995, arriving right in the middle of the '90s tech boom—before most network TV really knew what to do with computer nerds. The show centered on a group of socially awkward but intellectually gifted twenty-somethings working at a wildly successful software company called "Cyberbyte" and the computer illiterate woman hired to be the new office manager. Long before The Big Bang Theory or Silicon Valley, Dweebs leaned hard into stereotypes of tech culture, cubicle life, and the gap between brains and basic social skills. Critics didn't quite know what to make of it, and audiences never really found it, leading CBS to pull the plug after just seven episodes. Still, Dweebs has gained a niche reputation as a proto-tech sitcom that arrived a decade too early. Watching it now feels like peeking into an alternate timeline where network TV briefly tried to understand programmers and immediately gave up. Listen as the boys dive into Dweebs pilot episode to see if this forgotten dot-comedy was ahead of its time or doomed from the start. If you were born after November 2000, for your entire life, there has always been someone living in space. Astronauts Tim Peake and Nicole Stott share their experiences of living on the ISS. Nasa's latest venture, Artemis II, is due for launch in the next few months. The ten-day mission will carry four astronauts further than any human has gone before, in a loop far beyond the Moon. It's the latest stage of the US-led plan to eventually land humans on the lunar surface for the first time since 1972. We bring together astronaut Mike Massimino, who has flown to space twice and starred (as an astronaut) in The Big Bang Theory. We also hear from former Nasa researcher and AI expert, Kiri Wagstaff, and Les Johnson, former senior engineer at Nasa and now the CEO of Infinite Frontiers Consulting. This edition of The Documentary is from BBC OS Conversations, where we bring people together to share their experiences of major events and news stories.

The dialogue emphasizes the role of theology in understanding existence and the nature of reality, ultimately suggesting that mind may have created matter rather than the other way around.TakeawaysThe question of what came first, mind or matter, has been debated for centuries. The spiritual realm is often posited to have come before the material realm.Modern science tends to assume that matter produced mind, but this is debated.Philosophers like Plato have explored the existence of abstract concepts independent of human minds. The Big Bang Theory suggests that the universe had a beginning, implying a cause.Neuroscience studies indicate that the mind is not confined to the brain. There is no known location in the brain that corresponds to intellect or will. The evidence suggests that mind may have created matter, not the reverse.Theological perspectives provide insights into the nature of existence.Science relies on abstract concepts that cannot be proven by material means.Mentioned in this episode:Victory in 7 Book on Amazon - Get your copy today

Send us a textFairfax criminal lawyer Jonathan Katz was invigorated early on by entertaining others, including performing magic shows for children's birthday parties and performing musically, including with improvisational music. That helped make criminal defense a natural destination on Jon Katz's path, with the spontaneity required of the work, and the engaging, performing and entertaining involved on the road of persuasion. Jon recently looked up what his fellow college alum Stephen Engel was up to, and found that that for decades Steve has been writing for and producing television comedy. With persuasive storytelling being a big part of criminal defense, Jon invited Steve to interview on the Beat the Prosecution podcast, to discuss the story development and storytelling process, engaging the audience, and dealing with the overall creative process. Steve Engel has been a writer for such television series as Big Bang Theory, Mad About You, A.N.T. Farm, and Dream On. His interest in writing scripts goes back many decades. Steve and two other students led a class on comedy that Jon selected when entering college, which introduced Jon to such great writings as A Confederacy of Dunces, Catch-22, and Portnoy's Complaint. Jack Kerouac's On The Road -- of course not a humor piece, but with humorousness therein -- remains among Jon's favorite books, and underlines the virtual limitlessness of human imagination and wordsmithing. Steve talks about keeping the audience's attention, avoiding unnecessary ad-libbing, and working as a team to produce entertainment. One of the most risky things about criminal defense can be to put the defendant on the witness stand, where the accused does not have a script for what is to happen during cross examination, but only tips from their lawyer -- and the defendant's hunches -- about what might be asked. Nonetheless, good script writing and acting can help inform trial lawyers how to keep the audience interested enough so that the attorney's message gets persuasively conveyed, and not drowned out by other noise and ideas happening in the courtroom. Steve started as a lawyer, and has some ideas for lawyers' courtroom presentations. In the courtroom, the jury or judge will write the ending to the story. That is part of the thrill of victory and agony of defeat of trials. This episode is also available on YouTube at https://youtu.be/avQDPrT3JQw.  This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. I'm joined by Matthew Carlson from the What Am I Making newsletter and we talk about whether the film would even survive today if not for Chatterton's Academy Award nomination for her performance as Sarah, compare lost films to what it would be like if our music catalog was missing dozens of Elvis or Beatles recordings, and learn about interesting familial connections and an actress who was a bit of a daredevil in her spare time.

Are you ready for a moral audit? This episode cuts through the noise of surface-level ethics and rituals to expose the true nature of virtue. We combine deep literary wisdom with modern psychology and cinematic critique to provide five actionable ways you can instantly check your own intentions and understand societal blind spots. In this essential episode, we decode:The Poet's Challenge: Josh Malihabadi's famous critique on why society permits "drinking human blood" but forbids "grape wine." (The ultimate social critique of hypocrisy). The TBBT Test: We borrow a simple psychological trick from The Big Bang Theory—the "That'll Show Them" test—to instantly determine if your motives are pure or rooted in spite. The Inner Fire: The powerful lesson from the film Khuda Kay Liye on why fixing your Baatin (inner self) must always precede your Zahir (outer appearance).Action Speaks Louder: We examine the couplet that explains why people who constantly boast are the least likely to be doing the good they claim. The Hitler Paradox: How historical villains (like Hitler, a vegetarian/non-drinker) prove that good etiquette and rituals can coexist with profound evil, and why society often overlooks it.Hit play and start seeing the world—and yourself—with clearer moral vision.

We don't think twice about using a fork today, but our ancestors didn't love it - and they were pretty sure God wouldn't approve, either. Since the 1950s, artificial laugh tracks have helped ensure that jokes land on sitcoms from I Love Lucy to Friends to The Big Bang Theory. Let's meet the man responsible.http://www.commutethepodcast.comFollow Commute:Instagram - instagram.com/commutethepodcast/Twitter - @PodcastCommuteFacebook - facebook.com/commutethepodcast

4/4: This file covers CMB aftermath, Gamow's vindication, and Hoyle's controversial final years. CMB proved Big Bang theory, establishing cosmos temperature at 2.73 Kelvin and age at 13.8 billion years. Gamow (died 1968) wrote Princeton researchers, seeking recognition for his and Ralph Alpher's 1940s CMBcalculations. Hoyle's work with Margaret and Geoffrey Burbidge and William Fowler on heavy elements was genius, but only Fowler received the Nobel Prize. Hoyle never forgave Willie Fowler. Speculation includes the committee distancing from Hoyle's fringe theories or Hans Bethe misunderstanding Hoyle's role. Hoyle moved to Lake District, pursuing panspermia theory—life spreading via cosmic travelers. He rejected Darwinian evolution, claiming Earth too young, ironically gaining young-earth creationist support despite atheism. He proposed diseases like AIDS arrived via comets, viewed as eccentric. Both were "seat-of-the-pants thinkers," though Hoyle more stubbornly clung to strange concepts. Flashes of Creation: George Gamow, Fred Hoyle, and the Great Big Bang Debate, by Paul Halpern
