Juliet is an Arizona State University College of Law graduate and currently works as the Founding Partner of Framework Legal. Juliet's journey is as unique as they get, from journalist to Lawyer, this episode takes a deep dive into how she got to where she is today. Juliet and I started a decade before law school, where she graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor's degree in journalism. As a kid, Juliet always wanted to be a lawyer but her love for journalism would put that dream on pause. For the next decade Juliet would be a newscaster and journalist all over the country, working in Ohio, Corpus Christi Texas, and finally landing in Milwaukee. But Juliet would re-spark that childhood dream of hers, and land herself at Arizona State University College of Law. We would dive into Juliet's first year of law school, which she both loved and hated. She loved the learning aspect and getting acclimated with the Law, but highly disliked the pressure and stressful nature of one exam determining her grade for the semester. Her experience in Journalism allowed her to digest large swaths of information all at once, and be able to get through cases quickly. We then moved on to Juliet's post-law school jobs, two in particular we looked into were her time at Cold Stone Creamery, and as the Division chief at the Child and Family Division for Arizona. Cold Stone would be fun and chaotic, and supply her with the business chops she needed later in her career. As the division chief, she would lead the newly founded project, making a wholesale change and clean up to the department, further giving her skills that would become necessary when she finally hung her own shingle as the Founding Partner Framework legal. We then dove into her decade at Framework Legal, speaking about how to ask the correct questions to entrepreneurs, her experience as an entrepreneur, and the psychology behind it. On top of this, Juliet and I would speak about her psychological reinvention over the years, not being afraid of change, and never pigeonholing ourselves in lockstep with the rest of society. Juliet's long experience in the field and wide range of experiences serve for an episode full of wisdom and actionable insights! We recapped last night's NBA & NHL playoff action, and we talked about the police in Indiana opening an investigation into the Patrick Beverly incident from last week's loss to the Pacers. Also in sports, the new Utah NHL team is looking for a new name. "Cybersecurity is homeland security, cybersecurity is national security." ~ Governor Doug DuceyI recently had the incredible opportunity to sit down with former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey for an exclusive interview on The Public Sector Show by TechTables. Governor Ducey served as Arizona's 23rd governor from 2015 to 2023, during which time he transformed the state into a national leader in cybersecurity and technology modernization. In this rare and candid conversation, Governor Ducey shares his firsthand experience prioritizing cybersecurity as Homeland Security. He discusses the innovative strategies his administration implemented to strengthen the "human firewall" and dramatically reduce the state's vulnerability to cyber threats. But, in case you aren't watching the video, I wanted to pass along a couple of the main points.Cybersecurity as Homeland SecurityUnder Governor Ducey's leadership, Arizona prioritized cybersecurity as a critical component of homeland security. The state invested resources to improve cyber resiliency, recognizing that protecting citizens' data is just as important as physical security.Strengthening the "Human Firewall"Governor Ducey recognized that 90% of cyber breaches were due to human error. To combat this, he focused on strengthening the "human firewall" by requiring monthly cybersecurity awareness training for state employees using realistic phishing simulations. This hands-on defensive training approach, similar to how sports teams practice, enabled Arizona to dramatically reduce the percentage of employees falling for phishing attempts from 14% to 4%.Modernizing State Government through Technology InnovationArizona took a cloud-first approach, moving from outdated on-prem data centers to Google's secure cloud platform. The state also established a Cyber Command Center to monitor and defend against constant cyber threats in real-time. In his final year, Governor Ducey passed the Whole of State initiative, investing $10 million to provide cybersecurity tools to local governments, protecting them from rising cyberattacks.Executive Leadership StrategiesIn this exclusive interview, Governor Ducey shares his perspective on executive leadership strategies, such as the Arizona Management System for operating government like a lean business. He discusses the importance of metrics, strategic planning, selecting the right people, and driving cultural change when working to improve an organization.Lessons from an Entrepreneurial BackgroundGovernor Ducey also shares lessons from his entrepreneurial background, including scaling Cold Stone Creamery, which shaped his approach to expanding the ice cream franchise from one store to over 1,400. His experience in the private sector influenced his leadership style and strategies for driving innovation and efficiency in state government. ------Before we get into this week's podcast, I wanted to give a special shout-out to TechTables podcast sponsors: SentinelOne, Verizon, and SAP.SentinelOne's AI-powered security platform to break down silos and protect this state's entire enterprise with real-time data and control. Governor Doug Ducey is known as one of America's most successful entrepreneurs and most successful governors. In this episode, Governor Doug Ducey provides insights into the education landscape in Arizona, drawing from his background in business and politics. He emphasizes the importance of innovation and choice in the education system and discusses success stories such as charter schools and programs like Teach for America. The conversation delves into various aspects of education, including competition, school choice, fundamental education, innovation, and the role of community colleges. Governor Ducey also touches on the future of free enterprise and economic freedom.   Takeaways Innovation and choice are crucial in the education system. Success stories like charter schools and Teach for America demonstrate the potential for positive change. The education establishment often prioritizes protecting its interests over student outcomes. Arizona's culture allows for greater innovation and change in education. Competition can lead to improvement in schools. School choice empowers parents and can enhance both charter and district K-12 schools. Concerns about school choice include the loss of neighborhood community and political alignment. Fundamental education should prioritize reading, writing, and arithmetic. Innovation, such as educational savings accounts and online platforms, can transform learning. Community colleges play a crucial role in providing affordable education and skills training. Economic freedom and entrepreneurship are essential for individual and national success.   Governor Ducey was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio, where he began his career in business with Procter & Gamble, and later served as CEO of Cold Stone Creamery. There, Ducey led the expansion of the ice cream franchise from one single store into a business with 1,400 locations in the United States and 10 other countries.   Elected Arizona's 23rd Governor in 2014 and reelected by an even wider margin in 2018, Ducey successfully championed historic policy initiatives, enacting the lowest flat income tax rate in the nation, introducing a first-in-nation law that requires students to pass a Civics test before graduating from high school, knocking-down licensing requirements that stood as a barrier to work, and eliminating or improving over 3,365 regulations resulting in the equivalent of a $183 million dollar tax cut.    Ducey may be best known for pioneering Education Scholarship Accounts and universal school choice – providing every family with the opportunity to have their student attend whatever school is best for them. As the Hill reported, Arizona's program “has become the standard that school choice advocates argue other states need to emulate.”    Legendary Conservative Columnist George Will described Ducey as the “most successful 21st century governor.”    Under Governor Ducey's leadership, Arizona also experienced unparalleled growth with the state's economy having boomed while the size of government has shrunk. When Ducey left office, Arizona's government employed 5,000 less state workers than when he took office, and the state's economy added over 500,000 private sector jobs.           Learn more about Doug Ducey:   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dougducey/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/DougDucey Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dougducey/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/dougducey/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@dougducey     Learn more about creating better learning environments at www.Kay-Twelve.com.
