In this special episode of the Mark and Pete Show, we celebrate Cornish Pasties at then culminatino of Cornish Pasty Week by delving into the exciting events that took place, culminating in the World's Fastest Amateur Pasty Crimper competition. Held on March 1, 2025, at the Great Cornish Food Store in Truro, this inaugural event showcased the rich heritage and community spirit of Cornwall. We explore the origins and cultural significance of the Cornish pasty, a culinary icon with Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, ensuring its traditional recipe and methods are preserved. The art of crimping, essential for sealing the pasty and maintaining its integrity during baking, was at the heart of the competition. Participants, both adults and under-16s, demonstrated their speed and precision in crimping three pasties as quickly as possible, each with at least 18 crimps.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/mark-and-pete--1245374/support.

Well the sun is gonna surely shine this week because we are joined by star of the sitcom "Blossom" and friend of the Bayers, Jenna von Oy! On this episode, Vanessa fact-checks the bizarre direct message (and probably fictional road trip) that lead to her friendship with Jenna, we learn about the unlikely relationship between "Blossom" and "Seinfeld" and deconstruct Jenna's experiences doing commercials in the '90s which ranged from Kool-AId to Members Only to Quilted Northern. We also dig deep into the era's fashion—and what could accentuate a hat with fabric flowers attached to it more than crimped hair? (Unfortunately, crimping wasn't so easy for those of us with curly hair.) Finally, we discuss her co-star Joey Lawrence's "Nothing My Love Can't Fix" music video and play an insightful round of "Legit Moan or Unnecessary Groan" where we explore misguided opinions on marketing, economics and junk mail. Otóż kapitanowie mieli często płacone „od łebka” (by the body), za liczebność zwerbowanej załogi, a kasa ta była określana mianem „the bloody money”. A takie były podejmowane w 2 połowie 19 wieku. A w 1915 roku ustawa marynarska ostatecznie położyła kres impressmentowi. Szefowie gangów byli znanymi postaciami, o ich bezwzględności krążyły niezliczone legendy. Najsłynniejsi z nich to Jim „Shanghai” Kelly i Johnny „Shanghai Chicken” Devine z San Francisco oraz Joseph „Bunko” Kelly z Portland. Używał go również nasz dzisiejszy bohater - Larry Marr. Tę opowieść snuje dla Was grupa Salt Sea Pirates. Sail Ho Audycja zawiera utwory: „Larry Marr” w wykonaniu „Salt Sea Pirates”, słowa i muzyka: tradycyjne @jarasaseasongi znajdziesz na Facebooku i YouTube
Maxwell Levy was known as the "king of the crimpers" at the flourishing port of Port Townsend from the 1890's until his retirement in 1910. Crimps or crimpers are those who force or entrap sailors into service against their will or while they are incompetent, such as while inebriated or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Levy was the most important source of seamen to ships departing from the port. He was able to obtain them using a process known as shanghaiing. Levy acquired seamen through various types of coercion for a period of 20 years before being convicted of a crime against them. He worked out of a boardinghouse on the dock that he owned and operated for sailors. Changes in the law, as well as the introduction of steamships, which required far fewer seamen, finally compelled him to abandon his lucrative enterprise. Upon retiring in 1910, he returned to his hometown of San Francisco, where he died in 1931.Check out the podcast's Facebook page to stay up to date on the show:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastA special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comYou may notice the podcast no longer has ads in it, so I'm not making any money from the show, so if you'd like to become a monthly supporter or just give a one time donation, it would be greatly appreciated and will go towards research materials for future episodes:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comThank you for listening!
In this episode, Kris and Paul discuss the study that led to climbers everywhere both blaming and training their fingertip pulp: Measuring Lifting Forces in Rock Climbing: Effect of Hold Size and Fingertip Structure authored by Roger Bourne, Mark Halaki, Benedicte Vanwanseele, and Jillian Clarke; published in the Journal of Applied Biomechanics in 2011. They'll attempt to determine if just how meaty your tips are can actually help or hurt your climbing. And if so, is there even anything you can really do about it? Tune in to find out if it really does boil down to just the tips. *Additional studies/resources mentioned in this episode: Force response of the fingertip pulp to repeated compression—Effects of loading rate, loading angle and anthropometry authored by Elaine R.Serina, C.D. At the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the number of skilled and unskilled sailors needed to staff sea-going vessels fell short. Innocent men were forced to serve as seamen under conditions that were little better than serfdom. This cunning practice happened through a secret underground in one part of the Pacific northwest. This morning we shared breakfast and our podcast mics with our old friend, Darren Barnes. Not only is Darren the main power drummer dad of Reno in such bands as gob, plastic caves and alphabet cult, but he has also been a vital part of the Reno scene since the 80s: either through his winning 80s dance contest displays, various explosive pyrotechnic dalliances, DJing as D6, running his labels (satan's pimp and intruder alert), or manning a famous robot. While he is not someone to talk up himself, we celebrate his accomplishments and wax nostalgic with funny snippets from old days in Reno and beyond. If you weren't there for the hilarious train wrecks of the 90s these pictures may not make much, sense, but take them in and return to this post once you have listened because we share the stories behind the images in this episode. Thanks for joining us today Darren!!! It was a blast!

What use is an F-call? With coax going between radios, amplifiers, tuners, SWR meters and antennas there is no shortage on connectors. You can buy pre-made connecting cables, but after a while you'll likely realise that you're spending a fortune on such luxuries and you'll likely come to the conclusion that the pre-made solution is never quite the right length, either too long or too short. So you take like a duck to water and you start making your own cables, patch leads, etc. Leaving aside what kind of connector to select, where to buy it or which of the bewildering array of coax to acquire from a bevy of suppliers, you have a fundamental choice between crimping and soldering. If you spend a little time online you'll find that there is solid evidence either way and adherents to either school. Just like Holden versus Ford or Mac versus PC, each "side" vehemently defends their turf. Until recently I was exclusively a crimper. I crimped each connector that I could and I was happy. Well, mostly happy that is. I had this really annoying tool that for some reason would not crimp RG58 BNC connectors without leaving a little wing on the ferrule. Turns out that my dear supplier had snuck some RG59 connectors into the mix and they look really similar until you hold them side by side - and if you're wondering, the RG59 ferrule fits around the RG58 one, so no wonder it bulged like that. Anyway, that started the conversation about crimping versus soldering. Now, I'm not going to tell you what to choose. I suspect there are solid arguments that I'm avoiding here, but food for thought is this: A crimp has no undo. That is, once you've mashed your lug, it's all over. If you stuffed it up, you cut off your connector, throw it out and start again. Of course if you practice enough, stuffing it up hardly ever happens. Better crimping tools help you achieve your aim. However, if you solder, then if you stuff it up, you have the opportunity to heat it all up again, remove the offending poor connection and try again. I've just acquired a gas soldering iron - I never even knew such a thing existed, I'd never have bought the 12V travel iron for my trip if I'd known, and now I have the option to solder in the field. So, why does this matter? What should you choose? You have no need to be exclusive one way or the other. Just like one antenna doesn't do all jobs, and one screwdriver is never enough, crimping and soldering are two options in your arsenal. They complement each other. I'm Onno VK6FLAB
