How is disillusionment a gift? Christ Horst and Peter Greer talk about their latest book in which they show how Christian leaders from around the deal with setbacks, trials, suffering and failures in a way that demonstrates the hope of the gospel.  If you want to lead your business in a Christ-honoring way through both good times and hard times this conversation is for you.  We'll explore the meaning and value of disillusionment, the tension of suffering, the danger of comfort and the hope experienced by people like the prophet Jeremiah even in the midst of crushing disappointment or suffering. Conversation highlights: --Why is it important to reflect on the reality of disillusionment?  What is the antidote to disillusionment? --Headlines and social media are dominated by bad news and disillusionment.  But the world (and history) is also full of leaders who live with hope despite deep suffering and trials. --What is the biblical vision of hope? --The prophet Jeremiah as a guide for modern Christian leaders.  Jeremiah did the opposite of “building a platform.”  Where did Jeremiah find his hope? --Jeremiah 29:11 is the most quoted Old Testament verse.   Oops.  What is the real biblical narrative surrounding this passage? --“Meme-ified Christianity” doesn't actually address the frustrations and suffering in the world and in business. --An illusion about leading and serving is that you won't suffer, or that suffering isn't bound up with great leadership. However, many global Christian leaders demonstrate lives that move towards suffering and away from comfort.  --Jeremiah 17 is the centerpiece of the book, and it calls out the idol of self-reliance and calls every leader to trust in the LORD.  An important warning to Christians from a culture like the world of American business. --“Comfort can become an idol when good things are happening and you are unable to see it or thank God for it or recognize it is not of your own doing.” --Christian leaders who have navigated great difficulties and trials and who demonstrate great resiliency point to God as the source of their endurance, not themselves or their ‘grit'. --“Don't miss prosperity when it comes.” --“The gift of presence in pain is so much better than prescription.”  --Watch out for the kind of busyness that crowds out actually experiencing God and hearing from Him.  Connect and Learn More: Connect with Peter: https://www.linkedin.com/in/peterkgreer/ Learn more about Peter: https://www.peterkgreer.com/ Connect with Chris: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrishorst/ Learn more about Chris: https://chris-horst.com/ Get the book: https://www.amazon.com/Gift-Disillusionment-Enduring-Leaders-Idealism/dp/0764238264/ Connect with Aaron: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-groen/

Is remote work here to stay?  Will it make your company and your employees more effective or less effective?  Rick DeJarnette, executive coach and executive in residence at the University of Richmond, joins us to provide a framework for how Christian business owners and entrepreneurs can think about remote vs. hybrid vs. on-site work.  Listen to the end to hear Rick's top lessons for Christian entrepreneurs from the world of mountaineering.  Conversation highlights: -The debate over remote work is a debate about a “complex” problem, not a “complicated” problem, which means trying to get to the one “right” answer may be the wrong way forward for your company.  -Sometimes solving problems requires more wisdom than expertise.  With “complex” problems “it is less about finding the right answer it's about trying to get to a best answer.” -Succeeding in decision-making involves discerning what sort of issue you have and what sort of environment you are working within. -What is the role of humility in business decision-making?  “You need to surrender the hubris of knowing everything and believing that you can determine the outcome.”  -You have to be humble in environments filled with uncertainty (which is most environments!). -Are you able to distinguish between productivity and efficiency in your business and how you evaluate remote work?  What is the relationship between hours worked and output in your business? -You can't make a good decision about what metrics related to remote work matter for your business if you don't also have an iron grip on the mission of your business. -“We have a responsibly and duty to create.”  But the tension enters in when we are tempted to do so with hubris.  Sometimes we don't have all the knowledge, the perspective or the wisdom needed to nicely solve the problems we face.   COVID realities present us with a once in a lifetime opportunity to step back and acknowledge just how little control we have. -Don't miss Rick's top lessons for confronting COVID-related business disruptions from his mountaineering experiences. 1) What is the product and how many skus will there be to start? For example if the product is a pair of sun glasses and it comes in 10 colors, those are 10 SKUs you will be designing packaging for.  2) How Much? What will the product retail for? The retail price is an indicator to how much the brand may invest in the packaging. It also allows you to analyze the appropriate competitive landscape. Having a baseline for retail pricing can help to begin determining materials, processes, and production methods. 3) How many? What will the initial order quantity be? We’ve all heard start ups say their first order is only 500 units but their second order will be millions of units once some influencer gets it in their hands. Don’t let the promise of high quantities tomorrow affect your decision making today. 4) When? Define timelines. When is the launch date, when does it need to be in stores, and when does it need to ship? 5) How will the product be fulfilled? This is important because knowing if a product is fulfilled by hand vs by machine will impact the structural design and material selection of the packaging. Design and the City is a podcast about the ways we can use design to make cities more livable and lovable. reSITE is excited to announce the launch of its first-ever official podcast, Design and the City. We interviewed eight speakers ahead reSITE 2020 for a more intimate, in-depth dig into their current projects and outlooks on the future of our cities. Hear from Thomas Heatherwick (Heatherwick Studios), Chris Precht (Studio Precht), Leona Lynen (Haus der Statistik), and Ravi Naidoo (Design Indaba) among others. Cities are the sum of designers, developers, artists, citizens, public officials, entrepreneurs, and the displaced, but rarely do each of these constituencies gather in the same room, let alone speak the same language, and cities suffer for it. reSITE is literally that room. In order to create a city that is truly for everyone, we need to work together. We need to have conversations, debates, discussions, and we need to create a little bit of that friction where the magic happens. We use our flagship event to do just that and frame the future of cities through as many different perspectives as we can. This year we aim to create conversations around how cities can regenerate themselves from every angle. reSITE is a global non-profit acting to improve the urban environment, both on the stage at our events, and off. We work at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, politics, culture, and economics, acting as a catalyst for social action and innovative leadership. We encourage the exchange of ideas about making cities more livable, competitive, resilient, inclusive, mobile, and designing with humans in mind to protect and public space, architecture, and sustainable development in cities. Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation

As a sales leader, Amy Franko built a successful B2B sales career with global technology companies IBM and Lenovo. She then pivoted into entrepreneurship in 2007, launching a training firm, Impact Instruction Group. Known for her energetic style and practical experience, Amy is keynote speaker and author specializing in B2B sales and leadership. Her firm's sales training and leadership programs blend current research and real-world application for some of the world's most recognizable brands. She works with professional services firms, to help them grow business development results and build firm leaders.  In today's conversation, we discuss Amy's new book, The Modern Seller, and the five dimensions of the modern seller that she identified as essential for success in today's marketplace. These skills go deeper than typical sales techniques you learn in sales trainings. In order to rise above the world of sameness and truly set yourself apart as a valuable asset to your customer, you need to find ways to bring focus and meaning to your sales relationships. Amy explains how to do that and provides first hand examples based on her experience in working with clients and in building her own business as a trainer, author and keynote speaker. Key Takeaways A Modern Seller is a recognized differentiator in their client's business, the value of their product/service is not fully realized without them, and they are viewed by their client as a competitive advantage. The more technology and the more automation, the more we run the risk of looking and seeming like everyone else. There are so many more choices available today. We have to find ways to be meaningful to our prospects so that they are choosing us over all the other available choices. Modern Sellers are very intentional and focused so they can get more done in less time. Loyal clients are 3 times more likely to buy from you vs a prospect or a client who is merely satisfied. Building the capabilities of a Modern Seller go beyond mindset to specific practices and habits. The brain likes to develop patterns. The problem becomes when we get into ruts that no longer work for us. Build your ecosystem of intentional connections ahead of time and based on your goal.   Resources The Modern Seller Bonus Workbook Email Amy at: info@impactinstruction.com Learn More & Connect with Amy Franko Website: https://amyfranko.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amyfranko Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmyFranko

In the second episode, Gabe is joined by Lisa Mallis of Impactive Strategies. Lisa works to coach clients to break through the barriers that hold them back from achieving success in their business endeavors. Putting A.W.E. to Work for You Everyone is different, so the issues that distract one person may not sidetrack someone else. In the same regard, the solutions to distractions need to be custom in order to be effective. A simple acronym can help in the battle against distractions is A.W.E., which stands for Awareness, Work and Evaluation. Awareness In order to solve the problem, you need to identify the problem. Figure out what distracts you, and be open to the possibilities. Be mindful that distractions can come in all forms. Even minor interruptions can throw you off course. Keep a list to identify distractions.   Work Create a solution for each distraction. The answer has to be easy to implement in order to be effective. Implement an easy structure to address your distractions. For instance, if notifications on your phone distract you then disable those notifications. Permanently disabling notifications may not be feasible, but establishing a time each day to temporarily disable notifications will give you time to focus without distractions. Evaluation An effective solution needs to solve the problem of distraction, but it needs to not cause additional problems. After you implement a solution to stop your day from being derailed by distractions, then take the time to evaluate the solution. Make sure your solution did not create a new problem.     Learn More Connect with Lisa on Facebook or via email at lisa@impactivestrategies.com.
