Toys: They teach us a lot as we're growing up. They teach us to value our possessions, to use our imaginations, and how much our parents don't like it when we leave them all over the floor. It's no wonder we end up putting a lot of nostalgic value into them, or that there is a museum dedicated to them in south-central Oklahoma. The Toy and Action Figure Museum in Pauls Valley has thousands of figures on display, including those from franchises like Marvel, DC Comics, Star Wars, and more. Museum founder Kevin Stark is our featured guest today, giving us a tour of the site's impressive collection and helping us realize why our playtime heroes are worth preserving. Also on this week's episode, the editors share their own favorite toys of the past, and podvents tells us where to catch a cat by its tongue. You won't want to miss it!

Absolute Batman #1 (2024)It is all about the Absolute this month as we check out some of the premiere issues of the Absolute Universe from DC Comics! We start off with the meaty thighs of ABSOLUTE BATMAN and his blue-collar origin story where Bruce is almost seven feet tall, Alfred is not his friend (yet) and Martha Wayne is STILL ALIVE! We also got possible squid people, Alfred with Paulie Walnuts hair, ears that turn into knives and baby tailors turned Doonesbury characters. In episode 243 of Reel Therapy, Daniel and Donavon dive into Marvel Studios' Thunderbolts — exploring where it fits in the broader MCU, how it handles themes of trauma and redemption, and what the film says about mental health in today's culture. They also take a step back to examine Hollywood's responsibility in telling stories about mental health, and how films like Thunderbolts can either help or harm the conversation.A thoughtful breakdown packed with insight, emotion, and a little chaos — just like the Thunderbolts themselves.TABLE OF CONTENTS --00:00:00 - About the Episode00:00:41 - Thunderbolts*00:45:00 - Final Thoughts00:54:31 - Before We GoABOUT THE MOVIE --Thunderbolts brings together a team of morally complex anti-heroes and reformed villains from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, and more. Tasked with carrying out covert missions too messy for the Avengers, the group must confront their own inner demons while learning to trust one another.Directed by Jake Schreier, with a script by Eric Pearson, Thunderbolts explores themes of trauma, redemption, and identity against the backdrop of high-stakes action and espionage. The film continues Marvel's Phase 5 and dives deeper into the gray areas of heroism — where not every mission has a clean ending, and not every hero wears a cape.FIND US --For everything Reel Therapy and 241 Studios, check out our website:LINK: https://www.241studios.com/Follow us on:Instagram: @reeltherapy_podcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/reeltherapypod

The journey from discarded material to transcendent art forms the foundation of our conversation about Leonardo Drew, one of contemporary art's most physically committed and philosophically profound creators. Drew's remarkable journey began in the most unlikely of places—playing in a dump as a child in Tallahassee, Florida—a formative experience that would later inform his artistic sensibility and material relationship. What strikes you immediately about Drew is the joyful contradiction between his ebullient personality and the weighted gravity of his installations. His work appears weathered, aged, and discovered rather than created, yet as we learn, this is a carefully orchestrated illusion. "I don't work with found objects," Drew reveals. "Most of my material I actually create in the studio... I become the weather." This transformation process, where new materials are methodically distressed until they appear to carry centuries of history, speaks to Drew's profound understanding of time, memory, and physical transformation.Perhaps most compelling is Drew's pivotal turning point at age fifteen, when a black-and-white reproduction of a Jackson Pollock painting changed everything. Despite being courted by Marvel and DC Comics for his extraordinary illustrative talents, Drew abandoned this promising commercial path to pursue fine art—a decision requiring remarkable courage. "I decided it was time for me to stop using what I did well," he explains, essentially tying his hands to discover what existed beyond his comfort zone. This willingness to abandon mastery in pursuit of deeper questions characterizes his entire approach.Drew's extraordinary work ethic—rotating between seven projects simultaneously like "crying babies" needing attention—and his seven-year disappearance into the studio to develop his voice demonstrate a commitment few artists match. His perspective on creative struggle as "the most beautiful part of the journey" reminds us that art-making thrives on questions rather than answers. Experience Drew's transformative installations in person to understand why his work commands such reverence among artists and audiences alike.Sources:Leonardo Drew in "Investigation" - Season 7 - "Art in the Twenty-First Century" | Art21https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymMGgOCoK8k&list=PLfV5vsCYQApkupBnzNY3YxKpFJeNb7HqR&index=5An Interview with Leonardo Drew | Wadsworth Antheneumhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-75fm_UzhYg&list=PLfV5vsCYQApkupBnzNY3YxKpFJeNb7HqR&index=4Woodcuts: Leonardo Drew | useum of Arts and Design (MAD)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3S2nvDcvU&list=PLfV5vsCYQApkupBnzNY3YxKpFJeNb7HqR&index=3Artist Talk: Leonardo Drew | Amon Carter Museum of American Art Fort Worthhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtsqaHfEYxc&list=PLfV5vsCYQApkupBnzNY3YxKpFJeNb7HqRCarrie Scott, SEEN Podcast | Leonardo Drewhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/1a54U1cidMrWratJewuyFy?si=27cd5abd710f4439Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

This deep dive explores the surprising origin and evolution of Superman's crystal aesthetic. But why crystals? We unpack the ancient human fascination with these mythic natural formations. What began as a bold artistic choice in Richard Donner's 1978 film transformed Superman's visual identity forever, replacing the Buck Rogers-inspired aesthetics of early comics with something altogether more alien and mesmerizing.
