On this week's episode, I'm joined by Vulture's Nicholas Quah to discuss his and Savannah Salazar's piece on what Netflix might do with Warner Bros.'s tie-ins with Universal Studios and Six Flags, and then expanded the conversation to consider the vast universe of WB's entanglements. The studio also owns an enormous video game company, the second-biggest comic book company in DC Comics, and all sorts of other stuff. What is Netflix going to do with all these disparate pieces? Who knows! But we do some rank speculation.

With the release of Absolute Batman #15 and the big reveal of Absolute Joker, we're excited to welcome artist Jockonto the show for the first time. We would consider this comic an event even without the gnarly origin story at its center. This is also a big reunion for the artist and his writer collaborator, Scott Snyder. They've been delivering killer Batman comics since The Black Mirror, and have already re-invented the Joker concept in The Batman Who Laughs. However, the Absolute Universe allows them to swing for the fences in a way that the main continuity never could. And, as you'll hear, this required a little recalibration from Jock. Thankfully, Jock grew up consuming some of the most radical comics on the planet, 2000 AD. These Mega-City One stories, often featuring the iconic Judge Dredd, shaped Jock's imagination and taught him the unique power of a visual narrative. They also revealed why we must never be too enamored of the characters and stories we adore. Conformity is abhorrent. Toys are meant to be broken because that's the direct result of good, continuous, serious play. If you keep them precious on the shelf, they get dusty and stiff. To understand characters like Batman and Judge Dredd, we must constantly redefine them, whittling them down to their defining characteristics. We discuss with Jock how he had to recalibrate his idea of Batman and Joker before taking on Absolute Batman #15. We talk about his new 2000 AD release, The Art of Judge Dredd by Jock. We examine how 2000 AD continues to influence his work, including Absolute Joker, and how he crafts certain two-page spreads in this comic. Absolute Batman #15 is out now from DC Comics. It's written by Scott Snyder, illustrated by Jock, colored by Frank Martin, and lettered by Clayton Cowles. You can continue this conversation with Jock by following him on Blue Skyand Instagram. This Week's Sponsors Are you ready to face the future? Look no further than 2000 AD – it's the Galaxy's Greatest Comic! This Winter, from IDW Publishing, the Heroes in a Half-Shell take on the King of the Monsters! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles x Godzilla #1 crashes into comic shops on November 12th. Written by Godzilla Kei-Sei Scribe Tim Seeley and illustrated by the brilliant Turtle artist behind the Nightwatcher series, as well as the Stranger Things/TMNT crossover, Fero Pe, this new series finally brings two of our favorite franchises together. How can this reptilian miracle be? Long before the organization was corrupted by Shredder, the Foot Clan's original purpose was to save Japan from Kaiju! Now, in the present day, Godzilla and its fellow monsters have reappeared. Not only is the Foot not prepared to stop them…it would seem Shredder himself is behind the attacks! The Turtles are always crossing over into rad nerd realms, but this one might be the king crossover of them all. Jerry and John made a trip to Independence, Missouri, on Saturday to stop in at the new home for Clint's Comics. Located at 815 N. Noland Rd, it is just four miles north of I-70, which makes it easy to get to. Sharon is still getting the new store in order, so give her another week or two before you rush in to welcome her to the neighborhood. Netflix made like The Godfather and made an offer on Warner Brothers / Discovery that they could not refuse. Of course, we make mention of this because DC Comics has long been a part of Warner Bros. What does it mean to us? Will we be able to read comics on the same app that we are watching Stranger Things on? Will the next James Gunn Superman movie premiere first on streaming? Things are way too early in the process, so we can only speculate at this point. But trust us, to get nearly 600 episodes in the can, we must have been doing a lot of speculating along the way. We are just a few weeks away from our next WCPE Book Club read-along, which will be Fantastic Four: Unstable Molecules. Look for it in the app or find it in the dollar bins at your local comic shop. We have our weekly Pick 3 choices, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics, plus a look at last week's top ten books sold and a new trivia question. We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Instagram, or by email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint's Comics, 815 N Noland Road in Independence, Missouri. Whether it is new comics, trade paperbacks, action figures, statues, posters, or T-shirts, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you find exactly what you need. You should also know that Clint's Comics has the most extensive collection of back issues in the metro area. If you need to find a particular book to complete a title's run, head to Clint's or check out their website at clintscomics.com. Tell them that the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! sent you.
In this episode of AwesomeCast 761, Michael Sorg is joined by Intern Mac and Intern Tony for a wildly geeky night of robots, AI, VR, and very silly holiday gifts. We kick things off with the new Robosen Shockwave Transformer robot, a $1,000 self-transforming Decepticon boombox that doubles as a Bluetooth speaker, then fall down a rabbit hole of programmable Transformers, Buzz Lightyear, and WALL-E robots for STEM-minded kids. From there, Mac highlights Apple's latest Apple TV “liquid glass” intro, crafted with real glass panes and practical effects instead of AI – a hopeful sign for human artists in an AI-heavy world. Sorg shares what it's like living with an AI-generated news anchor on his Telly-style TV, including a bizarre “buff Judge Elvis” story that looks nothing like the real judge and points toward a future of AI hosts on gas-station and in-store TVs. The crew then revisits GameStop's “Trade Anything” day, reacting to reports of taxidermy, cans of beans, cursed plushies, and stressed-out employees caught between corporate hype and real-world chaos. On the gaming and VR side, we look at a mod project that brings classic shooters like Quake III, Doom 3, Redneck Rampage, and Quake 4 into standalone VR on Meta Quest headsets and reminisce about the clunky mall-VR rigs of the 1990s. Chachi's Video Game Minute covers the Helldivers movie, Netflix's proposed Warner Bros / WB Games deal, and rumored Japanese studios making design applicants draw by hand to avoid AI shortcuts – which leads into a deeper chat about Netflix potentially owning Mortal Kombat, Batman Arkham, DC Comics, and what that means for movies and games. Tony's Awesome Thing of the Week is pure chaos: the TikTok-viral “Butts on Things” activity books, puzzles, and Cheek-to-Cheek card game – proving once again that everyone finds butts funny and weird gifts win Christmas. We wrap with internship reflections, from Apple sock purses and new Apple gadgets to everything Mac and Tony have learned about podcast production, live streaming, editing, and social media on the Sorgatron Media shows. Stick around to the end for a tease of our Patreon-exclusive segment featuring the creepiest robot dogs you'll ever see.

Last week, it was announced that Netflix will acquire Warner Bros. in a $82.7 billion dollar deal with massive implications for the entertainment industry. The deal would leave the streaming service in charge of one of the biggest Hollywood film studios, HBO, and many famous pieces of intellectual property, including Harry Potter and DC Comics. But competitor Paramount is also vying for a deal. Georg Szalai, global business editor at The Hollywood Reporter, discusses what this deal would mean for Hollywood, responses from the industry, and the potential consequences for movie theaters and streaming services.
Savor shrimp — and Steve Ditko — with comics writer/editor Jack C. Harris as we discuss why he decided to abandon his original plan of becoming an artist and chose writing instead, the chance comics shop encounter which led to him being offered a job at DC Comics, why he was astonished when he first saw the colors of Superman's costume, how his working relationship with Steve Ditko began, an intriguing comparison between Julie Schwartz and Stan Lee I'd never considered, the greatest compliment he ever received during his comics career, the idiosyncrasies of editor Murray Boltinoff, which comics pro was responsible for the flowering of comics fandom, how he felt about the Marvel/DC divide during the time we were both assistant editors, what it was like working with the legendary creators who preceded us, the legacy character he regrets never having gotten the chance to write, his Human Torch story which took 17 years to get published, the contrasting ways Marvel and DC treated their Golden Age characters at the beginning of the Silver Age, and much more.
The guys are back to discuss the ongoing chaos of the Warner Bros./Paramount/Netflix legal battle and what the resulting deal could mean for the rest of us (in other words the rich people are doing rich people things that will probably only hurt the rest of us and result in a ton of job losses and prices increases... yay). Plus, the guys discuss Five Nights at Freddy's 2 box office weekend win, the upcoming trailer for Supergirl releasing later this week, who Scarlett Johansson could play in The Batman part 2, Quentin Tarantino being weird towards Paul Dano and Matthew Lillard, and more! The guys also answer 2 big questions: 1) with Avengers: Endgame set to rerelease in theaters next year, what MCU film would want to see get a rerelease? 2) did Jong play Balatro? 2026 is almost here and here at Comicast a new year usually means a new predictions issue of the podcast but this year we want to know what questions you may have for Jong and Michael. What prompts/questions would you give to the duo? For instance, which film will be the biggest box office draw? What character will make an appearance in Spider-Man Brand New Day? What video game property will be adapted next? Submit your prediction questions/prompts to them via social media or you can email them at comicastpod@gmail.com. Pasko and I continue our wide-ranging discussion on comics, television, and animation — expanding into old-time TV, behind-the-scenes film and show business, and the sometimes surprising roots of comic-book properties. They talk about the portrayal of Wonder Woman — including the editorial pressures and controversies surrounding her early stories under creator William Moulton Marston.Pasko reflects on his role in cataloguing and curating the vast history of DC Comics — discussing how the company's characters and features were compiled and preserved over decades. They reminisce about classic TV series and actors — stories involving old television stars like Gil Gerard (Buck Rogers), Jack Klugman (Quincy) , Clayton Moore (the original TV Lone Ranger), and the once-infamous playmate/actress Dorothy Stratton. There's also talk about other showbiz ventures related to comics — old-school TV adaptations, live-action attractions (like the ones from Six Flags featuring DC characters), and the interplay between comics, film, and television in shaping popular culture.

How important is Clea as a tone-setter for this team, and did you always intend for her to have this much presence, or did she just start taking over scenes once you started writing her?In issue #6 you've still got Carnage on the board, even though Eddie Brock: Carnage is wrapping up soon. You told me before you basically had to negotiate for every character. How are you keeping Carnage meaningfully involved long-term — not just as shock value, but as an actual team member — without breaking what Charles Soule did with him in his own corner?By issue #6, it feels like New Avengers is fully embracing chaos — you've got Bucky trying to lead a team of killers, liars, and literal monsters, while the line between heroism and survival keeps getting blurrier. How much of this book is about what it really means to be an Avenger when the ideals that title stands for just don't work anymore? We see Iron Apex actively working to bust out more members of the Kiluminati — Lord Britain and Rapunzel — while the team is still trying to figure out how to survive Evil Doctor Strange. How big is the Kiluminati conspiracy compared to what we've seen so far? Are we still at the “first wave,” or are you already building toward something closer to a war between their dark Illuminati and Bucky's crew?Guru Strange in issue #6 is… a lot. He's powerful, unhinged, and kind of grossly horny in a way that makes him instantly memorable. How did you find the voice for these twisted “duplicates”? Are you treating each Kiluminati member like a dark-mirror riff, or are you building them as full-on new villains with their own agendas beyond “evil version of X”?You've already said you wanted these New Avengers to feel like a Fast & Furious family — volatile, high-powered, kind of toxic, but ride-or-die when it counts. At this point in the story, do you see them actually becoming a “family,” or are they only ever going to be a barely-controlled disaster pointed at bigger disasters? The book's really leaning into sex and intimacy — especially with Black Widow and Winter Soldier in issue #6 — but it doesn't feel like empty heat. It feels messy and fragile and dangerous. Is Bucky/Nat the emotional core of this book going forward, and how hard are you planning to break them to test that core?Sensitivity coordinatorYou've talked about how continuity on this book is basically “Marvel Universe on steroids,” with characters being borrowed from multiple offices. Now that you're this deep — Hulk, Carnage, Clea, Bucky, etc. — what's the biggest creative win from that shared custody? Has any other office (or creator) dropped something in your lap that made you go, “Oh, that just unlocked the next arc”?Leadership in New Avengers feels like a losing battle — what would Cap say about Bucky's job so far as team leader?Extremely serious journalism question to close: If the New Avengers and the Kiluminati had to compete on a Bravo-style dating show where everyone is forced to live in one mansion and hook up or strategize, who (A) immediately starts sleeping with the enemy, (B) is secretly there just to stab someone, and (C) wins the whole thing without anyone realizing they were playing?

Netflix is buying Warner Bros for almost $83 BILLION and now that the shock has worn off, people are wondering how it will impact DC Comics (the publisher) and Cartoon Network. Topic: The 1990 DC Comics miniseries World's Finest by Dave Gibbons and Steve Rood. Contextual Background of the 1990 World's Finest (02:51 - 05:34) The miniseries releases shortly after Crisis on Infinite Earths and John Byrne's Man of Steel reboot (1986). Post-Dark Knight Returns, Batman and Superman's relationship had changed, characterized by distance rather than camaraderie. ️ Plot Overview (05:34 - 08:14) Lex Luthor and Joker team up to take over Gotham and Metropolis with intertwined but largely separate schemes. Batman and Superman investigate, culminating in events involving an orphanage, a nuclear reactor, and city-wide explosions. Decompression and Story Structure Critique (08:14 - 11:34) Discussion of story pacing issues: The narrative is elongated with side elements (e.g., orphan kids) that do not cohesively tie in. Emphasis on character moments over tight plotting. Initial Impressions and Artistic Elements (11:34 - 17:59) Chris praises the visual storytelling and art, referencing the use of parallel imagery and distinctive flashback watercolor style. Noted the deliberate design choices to echo Silver Age and Max Fleischer era Superman and early Batman. ️ Characterization of Villains and Supporting Cast (17:59 - 30:39) Joker portrayed in a "zany," less menacing mode, more a prankster than murderously malicious. Lex Luthor features a robotic hand and operates like a mob boss, balancing businessman and villain traits. Character Dynamics and Relationships (30:39 - 40:21) Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne's interactions highlight mutual suspicion and gradual respect. Batman and Superman's knowledge of each other's secret identities is subtle initially, revealed more overtly in third issue. ️ Themes and Continuity Notes (40:21 - 50:27) Orphanage is a thematic midpoint between Gotham and Metropolis, symbolizing shared orphan backgrounds of Batman, Superman, and villain. The book emphasizes orphans and legacy but does not fully develop these thematic elements. Technical and Artistic Praise (50:27 - 52:58) Art and character design praised for classic yet fresh look; great use of tableau pages showing Gotham and Metropolis. Noted the Batmobile's stylish design and Batman's athletic, sleek physique. Character in Action: Batman and Superman (52:58 - 59:55) Batman characterized as efficient, brutal, and action-focused. His use of Batarangs and disguises recognized as authentic. Superman rendered as powerful but more grounded Burn era 'cop,' balancing investigative journalism and heroic strength. Artistic and Thematic Highlights (59:55 - 01:09:46) Memorable moments include Superman carrying a nuclear reactor into space to save Metropolis. Subtle details such as Clark Kent's mannerisms and investigative approach noted. Overall Assessment and Legacy (01:09:46 - 01:14:36) The miniseries serves as a valuable snapshot of Batman and Superman dynamics post-Crisis and pre-mid-90s crossovers. While the narrative is considered "vibes-over-story," the series offers essential character moments, iconic imagery, and era-specific continuity. Conclusion and Promotions (01:14:36 - 01:19:44) Guests share social media handles and podcast info. Hosts plug "Trade School" podcast and Certain POV Discord for further comic discussions.
