today we bring you Part 3 of my Summer 2011 conversation with the late, great Marty Pasko. In this installment, we explore Marty's work from the 1980s, including his run on Blackhawk, and get his sharp perspective on what was then the big unknown — the launch of DC's New 52. Marty had a lot to say about how that relaunch might alter the company's history and how it stacked up against past reinventions of the DC Universe. We also take a hard look back at the Silver and Bronze Age stewardship of Superman under controversial editor Mort Weisinger — including Weisinger's infamous treatment of co-creator Jerry Siegel and his iron grip on the Man of Steel's mythos.Plus, you'll get a behind-the-scenes peek at the origins of DC's beloved reprint formats — the 80-Page Giants and 100-Page Spectaculars. Where did the idea come from? Why did they work? And what legacy did they leave? This is essential listening for anyone who loves DC Comics history — as told by someone who lived it.

Superman is an American fictional character created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and featured pervasively in DC Comic books. The character debuted in Action Comics issue #1 in June 1938[1] and has since become a paradigm for superhero characters.Hosted by Ausha. See ausha.co/privacy-policy for more information.
It's a bird! It's a plane! TV adaptations of the beloved DC Comics superhero! You know the drill: When he isn't fighting for truth, justice and the American way, the man in tights dons a suit and glasses for his secret identity as Daily Planet newspaper reporter Clark KentHosted by Ausha. DC Comics's Superman franchise, based on the character of the same name created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in June 1938, has seen the release of various films since its inception.[1]The character debuted in cinemas in a series of animated shorts beginning in 1941 and was the protagonist of two movie serials in 1948 and 1950. An independent studio, Lippert Pictures, released the first Superman feature film, Superman and the Mole Men, starring George Reeves, in 1951. In 1973, the film rights to the Superman character were purchased by Ilya Salkind, Alexander Salkind, and Pierre Spengler. After multiple scripts and several years in development, Richard Donner was hired as director, and he shot two films, Superman (1978) (marketed as Superman: The Movie), and Superman II (1980), at the same time, both starring Christopher ReeveHosted by Ausha. Welcome back to Word Balloon — the comic book conversation show. I'm John Siuntres, and this is Part 2 of my deep-dive with the late, great Martin Pasko. As the saying goes, you don't know where you're going if you don't know where you've been. And nobody knew the road behind — or the road ahead — at DC Comics better than Marty. In this episode, we go beyond his 1970s Superman Retroactive story and dig into his role as one of DC's most trusted historians. Marty helped shape The DC Vault in 2007 and contributed key research to Taschen's massive 75 Years of DC Comics anniversary book. We cover it all — the decades of change and innovation that redefined DC's biggest icons. You'll hear wild behind-the-scenes stories, from the editorial panic caused by William Moulton Marston's risqué Wonder Woman tales, to how a young Pasko and Cary Bates were tasked with tutoring The Godfather's own Mario Puzo in Superman lore while he worked on the screenplay for the 1978 Donner film.Marty also shares the real story of how editor Julie Schwartz gave Batman a sharp new direction in 1966 — just in time to catch the eye of producer William Dozier and spark the campy but iconic Batman TV craze, and how it influenced the Joel Schumacher Batman films more than the gritty comic books. This one's a goldmine for comic book historians and longtime Super fans.
Right now—July 2025—DC Comics is firing on all cylinders. From Absolute Power to House of Brainiac to character-first gems like Shazam, Green Lantern, and JSA, something incredible is happening in comics… and no one seems to be talking about it.In this video, I explore whether we're entering a new Golden Age of Comics—and why DC might be leading the charge while Marvel struggles to find its voice (except for one bright spot).
You think you know Superman.Flight, heat vision, super strength—sure. But… hypnosis glasses? Rainbow finger beams? A mini clone from his hand?Yep. That actually happened. In this episode, we dive into the wildest and most forgotten Superman powers from over 85 years of DC Comics. These are the powers DC quietly erased from canon—but not before giving us some of the weirdest moments in comic book history. From super ventriloquism and atomic vision to telepathic caller ID and reality-breaking time travel, this episode is a celebration of comic book chaos at its best.

We are traveling to Earth-383, a so-called Negative Earth first featured in Adventure Comics #383 (1969), where Supergirl seemingly perishes in an explosion and attends her own funeral—joined by the spirits of Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, and other ghostly figures! This Bronze Age tale was recently revisited in Back Issue #159 as part of a 40th anniversary retrospective on Crisis on Infinite Earths.Episode #163: What if Supergirl was dead and able to be amongst other dead people like Joan of Arc and Abraham Lincoln? from DC Comics Adventure Comics #383Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersWe're diving into the ethereal and existential! Several comic book publishers are being "held hostage" by the Diamond bankruptcy, which has taken a turn for the worse. Plus, catch some entertaining moments, including Squeaks' memorable appearance in a Donkey Kong onesie! DC Gaming relies too heavily on Batman games; diversification is essential. Pixar's Elio delivers a fresh, emotionally rich story with strong visuals. Strategic director choices for the James Bond franchise are critical for appealing to newer audiences. Upcoming Marvel games (Wolverine, Iron Man, Marvel Tokken) maintain excitement, while DC needs fresh ideas. Memorable Quotes: “Marvel isn't afraid to experiment; DC needs to step outside the Batman box.” “It's time to engage a younger audience—fresh ideas are essential for iconic franchises.” “Superman deserves gameplay mechanics as exciting and satisfying as Spider-Man's web-swinging.” Call to Action: Enjoy the conversation? "Kneel before Zod!" Not even a "please." Movie villains were rude back in the '80s. And Zod, Ursa, Non and Lex Luthor were no exception. Spanning cities, countries and even planets, Superman 2's bad guys really had our hero putting in the frequent flier miles. But now, decades later, does all the action leave us jetlagged. How many villains is too many? And shouldn't Superman have consulted Lois Lane about giving up ALL of his super powers? The Old Roommates find a phone booth and revisit the Christopher Reeve adventure through their middle-aged lens. Join us for a high-flying convo. Absolute Green Lantern #1 (2025)It is yet another entry in our DC Absolute Universe Month as we cover the horror-tinged — and possibly AMERICAN PIE-tinged — ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN.Green Lantern this time around is the Far Sector's Jo Mullein and much like Absolute Batman, she is friends with her contemporaries such as toy collector slash architect Hal Jordan, local police chief Guy Gardner and the salad-loving John Stewart. However, friendship takes a backseat to a HUGE GL symbol-shaped Jello mold materializing in the middle of their quaint Nevada town. Traveling bikers are liquefied, weird sinister powers are bestowed and the illegitimate son of Metamorpho, Majin Buu and Goro is making life difficult for everyone. Also, Jen and Shawn chat about new Superman toys, bad X-Files episodes written by famous scribes and the time Baby Jessica fell down the well.*** PROPER COMIC BOOK DISCUSSION STARTS AT 00:12:42 ***Promo: CAPES AND LUNATICS (https://open.spotify.com/show/6gcVNuoX3Si4I9FoFYTeC2?si=6b4d2b7e8d0b4ca6)Continue the conversation with Shawn and Jen on Twitter / Instagram / Facebook / Threads / Bluesky or email the show at worstcollectionever@gmail.comAlso, get hip to all of our episodes on YouTube in its own playlist! https://bit.ly/WorstCollectionEverYTDownload the podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and wherever you get your favorite shows.
