Our guest on this week's episode is John Lash, group vice president of strategy at e2open. We now have a pause in tariffs with China – or at least a sizable reduction in the amount of those tariffs compared to what was in place two weeks ago in the ongoing tariff wars. How are supply chains reacting and where do we go from here? Will we see another surge in imports during the 90 day pause and how do companies prepare for back-to-school and holiday seasons? Our guest share his insights.Shippers and importers need to be able to plan their shipments over the busy summer months, but there is little certainty to help them plan. We look at how companies are making adjustments during the Chinese tariff pause and how that may affect their planning for the rest of the year.Today, many workers in general are facing “return to office” mandates, but frontline workers in some industries, including logistics, are seeing an increase in opportunities to work from home. This information comes from a survey by resume-building platform Resume Now and frontline workforce hiring company Talroo. We look at what jobs in logistics are seeing increases in remote work opportunities.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. John DeBenedette, CEO of Abby by GoGoTech, is on a mission to transform this landscape. Abby, a hybrid manual-power wheelchair, combines affordability with cutting-edge smart technology, offering a groundbreaking solution to a pressing global problem.John explains, “The difference between having a wheelchair and not having one is often the difference between being bedridden or on the floor somewhere. There's no reason in 2024 that the first chair someone receives isn't motorized.”Abby is designed to meet diverse needs, particularly in underdeveloped regions. Its lightweight, foldable structure ensures portability, while advanced safety features like sensor-driven obstacle detection make it adaptable to various environments. These features are critical in expanding access to mobility and autonomy for users across the globe. The innovation goes beyond the chair itself. Abby integrates cloud connectivity and app-based support, extending the reach of caregivers and families. “We created our own controller from a clean slate,” John shares. “This gives us the agility to implement sensor safety, connectivity, and more while maintaining a competitive cost.”John also highlights the economic and social impact of Abby's mission. “By slashing the price of a basic power chair, we can make a huge difference. It shouldn't take philanthropy to get these products into the hands of those who need them.”Currently, Abby is raising capital through an equity crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine. This opportunity aligns perfectly with impact investors looking to support transformative solutions to global challenges. John and his team invite everyone to join the movement, amplifying Abby's reach and changing lives, one wheelchair at a time.tl;dr:* John DeBenedette created Abby, a smart wheelchair, to address global mobility challenges innovatively.* Today's episode highlights Abby's hybrid design, combining manual functionality with smart, cloud-based features.* John emphasizes affordability, aiming to disrupt the wheelchair industry's scarcity model and high pricing.* Leveraging his software expertise, John built Abby's first new wheelchair controller since the 1980s.* Abby's crowdfunding campaign on StartEngine invites impact investors to support its transformative mission. How to Develop Transforming Limitations into Opportunity As a SuperpowerJohn DeBenedette's superpower lies in his ability to transform personal limitations and experiences into innovative solutions. After experiencing a life-changing motorcycle accident and navigating the challenges of mobility impairment, John developed a unique perspective that enabled him to see untapped opportunities in assistive technology. This perspective, combined with his professional expertise in software development, allows him to reimagine possibilities in industries others may overlook.John's journey to founding Abby began with his own rehabilitation process following his accident, which required him to use a wheelchair for nearly a year. Reflecting on the outdated technology and scarcity in the wheelchair industry, he realized the profound need for innovation. Leveraging his software background, John developed a proprietary wheelchair controller—the first new design since the 1980s—that integrates robotics and cloud connectivity. This groundbreaking achievement exemplifies how he turned personal and professional experiences into a transformative enterprise.Tips for Developing This Superpower:* Reframe Limitations as Opportunities: Reflect on challenges you've overcome and consider how they could inspire solutions or innovations.* Leverage Personal Experiences: Draw from your unique life experiences to identify gaps or unmet needs in the world.* Apply Professional Skills in New Ways: Use your career expertise to approach problems in unconventional industries or niches.* Adopt a Collaborative Approach: Build systems and processes that integrate diverse fields, like John's combination of hardware and cloud computing.* Pursue Lifelong Learning: Stay curious and willing to explore areas outside your immediate expertise to enhance your problem-solving capabilities.By following John's example and advice, you can make transforming limitations into opportunity a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. Our guest on this week's episode is John Lash, group vice president of product strategy at e2open. Good supply chains allow companies to remain competitive. But sometimes they need a bit of government help, especially when their competitors receive assistance from their own governments. That's one reason why the Biden Administration has launched the White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience. Our guest shares why this latest task force was created and what it is intended to address.Government regulations are always a big topic at trucking-industry events, and that was certainly the case this week at the SMC3 Connections conference in Colorado Springs. Connections is an annual educational event sponsored by SMC3. We share some of the highlights from the conference, including proposed government regulations that freight companies see as concerns due to their their implementation timelines. This week UPS sold its Coyote Logistics division to RXO. UPS had acquired Coyote for $1.8 billion in 2015, when it was a hot startup in the freight brokerage sector. Since that time, conditions have gotten really tough in the truckload freight business, which has been in a freight recession for about two years now. The sale reflects that downturn, as Coyote was sold for just over $1 billion. We look at the deal and discuss how both RXO and UPS will benefit from it moving forward.Supply Chain Xchange also offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane. Our guest on this week's episode is John Lash, group vice president of product strategy at global supply chain platform, e2open. The EU has agreed to new environmental and social governance (ESG) rules within The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D). This requires companies to act if their supply chains cause environmental damages such as toxic air, packaging and packaging waste or violate forced labor laws. But what will this updated call to action mean for corporate accountability? Everything seems to be getting more “high tech” these days. In our current issue, we take a look at how this trend is affecting sorters—which, of course, are keys to keeping warehouse and distribution center processes running smoothly and efficiently. Both shippers and carriers throughout North America know all too well that the truckload industry has been in the low cycle of a freight recession for nearly two years. There are basically too many trucks and not enough cargo moving to fill them all. However, we've lately gotten some indication that things are finally getting ready to turn around. Our guest on this week's episode is Pawan Joshi, executive vice president, product management & strategy at E2open. With the rebound in air travel, there are more flights available now to shippers, including cargo-only flights and belly space on passenger planes. How can shippers take advantage of that extra capacity and the lower rates now available? We've seen a lot of advances in robots that move inventory around the warehouse in recent years. But one problem that has remained really hard to solve has been getting boxes into and out of truck trailers or shipping containers. But now we are seeing new technologies to address truck loading and unloading, with some significant investments and pilot programs making progress on this difficult, labor-heavy aspect of distribution.More women are joining the trucking industry as technicians. Countless attempts have been made in the last decade to leverage cutting edge technology to give companies the transportation and supply chain visibility that they need to anticipate disruptions, proactively manage risks and boost supply chain resilience. Literally hundreds of millions of funding has been poured into tech stacks that promised to finally deliver the visibility and control that every globally operating company is craving for. Yet, the end result of all these efforts has been quite sobering, to say the least. So our host Boris Felgendreher invited a representative from one of the key players in the real-time-transportation visibility space onto the show to discuss what's going on. The guest is Anand Medepalli, the Chief Product Officer of Shippeo. Shippeo is based in Paris, France and is considered a global leader in real-time multimodal transportation visibility, helping major shippers and logistics service providers to operate more resilient, sustainable, and customer-centric supply chains. The company just launched an ambitious new offering that it calls Transportation Process Automation. It's already used by Renault, a long-time key customer of Shippeo's and is supported by an interesting group of launch partners such as Google Cloud, E2Open and 4Flow. Enough reason for us to take a close look under the hood to explore if what Shippeo is building here is indeed the Future of Transportation Visibility. Enjoy! John Kingston - Editor At Large - FreightWaves - Carle Place, NY Topic: Ryder's Loyalty Incentive Program and Earnings from E2Open This is an interesting incentive program, how does it work? And it's not based on how many dollars a customer spends with Ryder… They also had their earnings release - with their Fleet Management Systems still bringing in the lion's share of revenue, but more growth from other areas…. Topic: E2Open Earnings E2Open had an interesting call where their earnings were not significantly down, but the outlook was. Are they in trouble after reporting they lost $720 Million last fiscal year? “In its forecast for fiscal 2024, which began March 1, e2Open forecast that subscription revenue measured by GAAP standards would be $545 million to $555 million, an increase of 3.2% from the full-year 2023 figure of $532.9 million. That percentage increase compares to the more than 58% figure for fiscal 2023 compared to 2022 and is well below even the 18.2% increase in subscription revenue posted for the fourth quarter.”

In the podcast interview Jim and Joe discussed key WMS trends for 2023: Warehouse management systems (WMS) are continuing to move to cloud-based computing. Cloud computing is the practice of using a network of remote servers hosted on the internet to store, manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal computer. Cloud computing has many advantages and technology leaders like Softeon architect their solutions to work seamlessly with the cloud. As Chief Strategy Officer at Duck Creek Technologies, Eva Huston is responsible for building value for the technology and spearheading corporate strategy on a global scale. She is also an independent board member at E2open and previously served as CFO at Verisk Analytics, as well as Managing Director at JPMorgan. Eva is Marcel Schwantes's guest on this episode of Love In Action. “I think that whenever you can bring your whole self [to work] ... you're just going to be better. Regardless of your background, everybody has something special to bring to the table,” Eva comments. [7:10] Marcel asks Eva to share lessons she learned moving up the ranks as a woman in a male dominated industry. “You'll hear that a theme in my career is that I would create a role that didn't exist... It's finding new ways to bring value to a company,” she replies. “I tried to look for creative ways to approach things and some ways that might be more traditionally female.” [10:11] Leading with love starts by seeing and honoring the people on your team, Eva says. You would think that you would automatically do that while spending time with them, but it's common to be around someone for a long time and still not truly see or honor them. Practical love starts when you look at who your team is, what motivates them, and what lies in their hearts. By doing that, you validate them as people. [17:37] “As you go up the leadership ranks, I think that you have to find ways to show your strength that are more indirect so people feel like they have that freedom to grow and flourish,” Eva shares. [21:38] Marcel asks Eva what leadership trait is the hardest to internalize and carry out. “Patience,” she responds. “It's hard for leaders because a person who views themselves as a leader wants to run forward and go fast and get things done. You almost have to counterbalance that with that patience and say like ‘Who's on my team? What do they have to bring?,' and ‘Let's not start running at a target before we know what we've got here.'” [26:32] It's hard to be soft, Eva claims, which is why soft skills are so hard to grasp. “That's just something that we as leaders have to realize: that being soft, being human, and being down to earth and approachable is what's going to make our businesses perform the best.” [30:42] A special thanks to our sponsor, Duck Creek Technologies for making the episode possible. In episode 2 of 2 with Rebecca Nerad (VP of Customer Success at E2Open), Rebecca explains why it’s not a question of if CSMs should own renewals, upsells, and cross-sells, but defining when they should. She argues that there are cases for both CS and Sales to own renewals, but regardless of who owns the revenue, it’s important to tie CS to the metric of net dollar retention.
In this interview with Rebecca Nerad (VP of Customer Success at E2Open), Rebecca shares how to set up a Customer Advisory Board that executive stakeholders actually want to be a part of. Rebecca runs Customer Advisory Boards in a programmatic way, which leads to better engagement and more value added than most CABs.
The more complex a supply chain, the more moving parts there are to monitor and that generates a lot of data. There are any number of ways to collect that data, but when a business has to collect, process, and normalize that information, often the holistic approach of a control tower is the way to go. Lori Harner, Senior Director of Product Marketing for E2Open joins us to explain how a control tower might have your supply chain looking up. Rebecca is Vice President of customer success at E2open, the largest software and information provider for the shipping industry. They’re already connected to over 100,000 supply entities, 35,000 shippers across 177 countries and perform 8 billion transactions per year. In other words, they know what they’re doing when it comes to supply chain and they help to unleash business potential in every company they work with. Rebecca explains that companies in 2020 should focus on embedding technology and AI, and learn how to leverage real time channel data. Instead of just following the trends and buzzwords, companies should put an emphasis on understanding the best way to leverage technology, since it’s not a one size fits all solution. This means understanding what to do with data and how to use it appropriately. Another issue that will be affecting supply chains globally is Brexit. E2open offers a unique solution called “Brexit ready in one day” that prepares companies for the potential impacts of Brexit. What makes E2open different is their large network and the fact that they’ve been managing data for two decades. Thanks to this, they are well equipped to enable convergence and unite supply chain - whether it’s with an SME or a huge conglomerate. In this episode we discuss: [2.47] Why customer success is important [7.33] What should companies focus on in 2020 [12.07] 24 hours to Brexit ready [20.41] What makes e2open different [25.30] What are some supply chain challenges Resources and links mentioned: E2open
