Supply chain software provider E2open is being acquired by Australian tech company WiseTech Global for $2.1 billion. This transaction, the result of a strategic review pushed by an activist investor, values E2open at $3.30 per share, a 28.4% premium over its closing price last Friday. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers implemented a nationwide overtime stoppage last Friday, averting a full strike after receiving a late contract offer from Canada Post. However, the threat of a strike has already damaged Canada Post's parcel business, leading to anticipated delays and a sharp drop in volumes as customers seek alternative carriers. Aurora Innovation has decided to keep a person in the driver's seat of its autonomous trucks temporarily at the request of OEM partner Paccar, due to certain prototype parts in the base vehicle platform. This observer will not operate the vehicle but will assist with timely recovery if needed, such as pulling over for events like a tire blowout or bad weather. Generative AI is making it possible to not only remove the human from the driver seat, but, in the world of trucking and freight, from the vehicle entirely.  This week on Generative Now, Lightspeed Partner and host Michael Mignano speaks with Chris Urmson, CEO and co-founder of Aurora Innovation, a company that makes software for autonomous vehicles with a focus on the trucking industry. Chris shares his journey from participating in the self-driving vehicle DARPA Grand Challenge early in his career, to leading the autonomous vehicle program at Google. Michael also talks with Chris about why Aurora focuses on the trucking and freight industry, the challenge of designing AI systems for self-driving technology, and how technological advancements in radar and LiDAR have helped make autonomous vehicles possible . Chris discusses his insights about developing AI systems to mimic human driving, and how he sees the future of autonomous vehicles for both trucking and personal cars. Chris Urmson is the co-founder and CEO of Aurora Innovation. Before co-founding Aurora, Chris led the development of Google's autonomous vehicle project (later known as Waymo) from 2009 to 2016. As a graduate student, he also led the Carnegie Mellon University team for the DARPA Grand and Urban Challenge as the Director of Technology, winning second and third place in 2005, and first place in 2007. We always cite our sources: Gov. Josh Shapiro warmed up the crowd at Kamala Harris' rally in Philly on Tuesday, before she and her running mate Tim Walz took the stage together for the first time. Some reporting suggests Harris had better chemistry with Walz than Shapiro during their meetings last weekend. JD Vance also held a rally in Philly on Tuesday – it was his first campaign stop in Pennsylvania since he became Donald Trump's running mate. Aurora Innovation raised $483 million to launch a self-driving truck route between Dallas and Houston – the company, which is headquartered in Pittsburgh, initially asked for $350 million. Netflix's Unsolved Mysteries reboot is highlighting a Beaver County cold case from 2014. The FirstLight LiDAR can detect obstacles up to four football fields away, significantly enhancing safety. Aurora's development strategy combines on-road testing, controlled track environment testing, and extensive simulations. They're rigorously preparing for various weather conditions and rare events to ensure maximum safety and reliability. The company's partnerships with PACCAR, Volvo and Uber Freight will enable the company to scale operations and build a meaningful business overtime. The business model could change over time as it was developed to be flexible as the company scales driver-out commercial operations. The first lane that Aurora will operate driver-out will be Dallas to Houston followed by El Paso to Fort Worth. However, new standards are being introduced to replace the humble bar code with more sophisticated codes that can contain much more data. We talk about the benefits and use cases for the newer 2D types of barcodes. We've been hearing about the potential for autonomous self-driving trucks for a few years now. The technology could be applied in transportation and could ease driver shortages. There have been a number of pilot programs for testing autonomous vehicles, but we also see some opposition to their adoption over concerns of safety. Today we share some of the latest news concerning these autonomous technologies. Speakers at this year's SMC3 JumpStart conference in Atlanta shared their views that the challenging conditions that have plagued freight markets for the past couple of years will continue in 2024 – but that the volatility will diminish as the year progresses. Play Episode Listen Later Aug 8, 2023 45:03

Chuck Price, President, AI Kinetics joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss the shutdown of Waymo Via and what it means for the development of the universal driver. The conversation begins with Chuck sharing his thoughts on the current state of the autonomous trucking industry. We are going through change. What we're seeing is the early phase of this development which was largely science doing science, now moving to doing engineering and commercialization. Some of the companies that have been involved in this thought ahead for that and are prepared and others are struggling or have struggled. What we are seeing is a consolidation and some changes in strategy that I think are normal and healthy for an industry as complex as this. – Chuck PriceThe consolidation currently occurring in the autonomous trucking industry is healthy — the market is functioning properly. On Wednesday, July 26th, Alphabet announced Waymo will be shutting down their autonomous trucking division — Waymo Via. While this may have come as a surprise to many, there were rumors in the market and public statements by Alphabet on earnings calls that laid the foundation for this announcement. Waymo did the right thing for a lot of reasons. – Chuck PriceBy shutting down Waymo Via, Waymo is now going to focus exclusively on their robotaxi business — Waymo One. As Mr. Price stated, this is indeed the right thing for Waymo to do as they are in a head-to-head competition with Cruise. Cruise is a formidable opponent with the resources to compete. Not to mention, Cruise is currently expanding at a much more rapid pace than Waymo. Cruise is in the driver's seat, while Waymo follows behind. From a technical perspective, was this an admission by Waymo that the Universal Driver did not work as they expected? Or is this more inancial discipline coming from Waymo as the division will have a new de facto CEO on September 1st — Ruth Porat, President & Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet. In her new role Ms. Porat will be responsible for investments in Alphabet's “Other Bets”. To further streamline the business and appease Wall Street, could Ms. Porat look to license the Waymo driver to global OEMs? Or raise additional capital outside by collateralizing Waymo's IP? Aurora Innovation with 1,450 patents related to autonomy recently raised $820 million in new capital. I am confident that the formal IP developed by Aurora gave them a huge advantage when they went to raise money, and without that they probably would not have been able to raise. – Chuck PriceEven though Aurora recently raised $820 million in new capital, the company has a cash burn rate of $45.3 million a month. It's expensive to operate, Aurora. With Waymo signaling that the Universal Driver did not work, Aurora continues ahead with developing their version of the Universal Driver. Would Aurora be wise to shut down their passenger car business and focus solely on autonomous trucking? This decision would allow Aurora to streamline their business and lower their cash burn rate — the economics point the way forward. But the question remains, what path will Aurora choose as the company matures and grows?I haven't seen a Universal Virtual Driver yet, but I have seen focused drivers come to fruition. We've seen cars that are now self-driving without safety drivers. We've seen trucks that are self-driving without safety drivers. Both have been achieved. The science is done for those specific use cases. – Chuck PriceTo scale an autonomous trucking startup, the startup has to have a production relationship with a truck OEM. To achieve this relationship, the autonomous trucking startup will have to commit $50 to $100 million to the relationship.Wrapping up the conversation, Chuck shares his thoughts on how he sees the autonomous trucking industry evolving over the next five years.Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple PodcastsFollow The Road to Autonomy on Spotify Follow The Road To Autonomy on LinkedInFollow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterRecorded on Tuesday, August 1, 2023See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

It's going to be a long time before robots replace sports mascots, but it might be better for one of our GeekWire colleagues when they do. That's one of the more lighthearted takeaways from our return trip to Pittsburgh, where GeekWire co-founder John Cook somehow managed to make enemies with yet another pro sports mascot, but we also came away with some more fundamental insights into the state of robots, automation and artificial intelligence: Supply chain challenges and labor shortages are changing the national conversation about automation, and accelerating adoption of robotics especially in manufacturing and distribution. Amazon's ambitions for rapid delivery are boosting robotics and automation across the e-commerce industry by prompting competitors to follow suit with their own solutions to increase logistics efficiencies. Robotics startups and autonomous driving companies are finding success in business and enterprise markets, as evidenced by Aurora Innovation's work with Paccar and FedEx on a self-driving truck. Many consumer robotics companies are still trying to do too much in making multi-purpose robots, rather than focusing on doing one thing well, as illustrated by the initial reception to Amazon's Astro home robot.   See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Self-driving truck tech company Aurora Innovation yesterday announced a partnership with carrier Werner to haul freight between Fort Worth and El Paso in Texas. Aurora said the trucking lane it will test for Werner is an essential link in the nation's freight network, as it is the middle leg between Atlanta and Los Angeles. The route is more than 600 miles and takes approximately nine hours to complete, making it an attractive candidate for autonomous trucking.

Like it or not, self-driving vehicles are coming. Some say they’re already here. With ever-increasing speed, the technology for creating both autonomous private vehicles and public transportation is becoming a reality. But who do we become when we relinquish control to machines? How safe will these vehicles be? What will they look like? And who owns the data they generate? To mark the SXSW world premiere of his new documentary, Autonomy, Malcolm Gladwell (author and host of Revisionist History) joins Chris Urmson (CEO of Aurora Innovation) and NBC News Correspondent Jo Ling Kent for a conversation about where we’re heading and who we’ll be when we get there.
