Strategic affiliation in higher education offers an alternative path for institutional sustainability—one that maintains mission and autonomy while accessing shared infrastructure and support. In this episode of the Changing Higher Ed® podcast, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Dr. Matt Nehmer, President of The Colleges of Law, about his institution's affiliation with The Community Solution Education System (TCS) and what other leaders should know before pursuing similar strategies. Drawing on his experience as both a college president and former system executive, Nehmer shares how the affiliation was structured, how accreditation and compliance were handled, and what shared services have allowed The Colleges of Law to professionalize operations without sacrificing identity. This conversation is especially relevant for presidents, trustees, and institutional leaders considering affiliation models to improve long-term viability. Topics Covered: Why The Colleges of Law pursued affiliation before it became a necessity The dual-board governance structure that balances autonomy and accountability How legal safeguards protected institutional assets during transition Shared services provided through The Community Solutions system and how they're managed Accreditation coordination with WASC and the implications of a system model Academic collaboration across system institutions without curriculum loss Leadership communication and the president's role in system-level engagement Real-World Examples Discussed: Asset protection using a legacy nonprofit entity Cross-listed family law course shared with affiliated institutions Accreditation contingency planning in case of system dissolution Strategic planning coordination across multiple colleges Three Key Takeaways for Leadership: Presidents must actively educate stakeholders about how system affiliation works. Legal and governance structures matter—protect assets and clarify responsibilities. Affiliation doesn't require cultural compromise; it enables operational focus. This episode provides practical insights for institutions exploring strategic affiliation as a pathway to long-term resilience without sacrificing independence. Recommended For: Presidents, trustees, board members, general counsel, provosts, and system executives considering affiliation or system alignment models in higher education. In this episode of Teach Sleep Repeat, Dylan and Hayden delve into the pressing issues facing the UK education system. They explore six critical areas where the system is faltering:Autonomy and Agency: Examining the diminishing independence of educators in their teaching methods.Teacher Qualifications and Expertise: Discussing concerns over the adequacy of teacher training and professional development.Agency Workers: Highlighting the challenges faced by supply teachers and the exploitation within the system.Pedagogical Understanding: Addressing the lack of deep pedagogical knowledge influencing curriculum design.Assessment and Diagnostics: Critiquing the over-reliance on standardized testing and its impact on student learning.Purpose of Education: Questioning whether the system serves students' needs or merely political optics.Following this in-depth discussion, the conversation shifts to the potential for upcoming teacher strikes. The National Education Union (NEU) recently rejected the government's proposed 2.8% pay rise, citing it as "unacceptable" and "unfunded" . An indicative ballot showed that 93.7% of members voted to reject the offer, with 83.4% willing to take strike action . However, the turnout was 47.2%, just below the 50% threshold required for legal industrial action. The NEU is calling for a fully funded, above-inflation pay rise to address the ongoing recruitment and retention crisis in schools. In this episode:A critical analysis of systemic issues in UK education.Insights into the NEU's stance on the proposed pay rise.Discussion on the implications of potential teacher strikes.Whether you're a primary or secondary teacher, teaching assistant, or part of the senior leadership team, this episode offers valuable perspectives.Enjoyed the episode?Leave us a review and follow us @teachsleeprepeatpodcast on socials!

In today's episode, I bring you a fascinating conversation with John Tomsett and Mary Myatt – two people who've done so much to shape thinking about curriculum and leadership in schools over recent years. Mary Myatt is an education adviser, writer and speaker. She started out as an RE teacher and has written extensively about curriculum, leadership and school improvement – books like High Challenge, Low Threat, The Curriculum: Gallimaufry to Coherence and of course the original Huh. John Tomsett taught in state schools for over three decades, including 18 years as a headteacher. He's written widely about leadership and mental health in schools, including Love Over Fear, Mind Over Matter, and Putting Staff First. He's also one of the leading figures in the evidence-informed education movement and former leader of Huntington Research School in York. This conversation centres around their latest collaboration, AP Huh, which is part of their brilliant Huh series. The idea behind the Huh books is simple but powerful: to elevate the conversation around curriculum design by listening closely to the people doing the work – subject leaders, senior leaders, teachers, and in this case, those working in alternative provision. The term Huh comes from the Egyptian god of endlessness, creativity and regeneration – and that spirit runs through everything they write. The Huh books are deeply rooted in the real world of schools, but they always look to what's possible, what's better – what could be. Together, John and Mary bring a huge depth of experience, a deep moral commitment to young people, and a keen eye for what actually works. This was a really enjoyable conversation – and I hope you get as much out of it as I did. Today on the Matt Walsh Show, the Trump administration just waged an all-out assault on the corrupt university system in this country. We'll get into the details. And, Democrats have found the strategy that will make them cool again, or so they think—it's called "dark woke," and it completely misses the point. And Michelle Obama says that, as a black woman, she isn't able to talk about her stresses and articulate her pain, which is weird, because that's literally all she ever seems to do. This episode of The Wellness Matters Podcast was an interesting one. I had my friend Ashley Hamilton (a proud parent of twin three-year-olds) again. We have been talking privately for a while about programming we were 'sold' surrounding parenting as well as the education system. We finally felt like it was time to take it to the podcast. We thought, that if we felt this way, there must be others who do as well. Today's episode is the first episode in a series. We covered what we believe to be parts of education that are broken and then ideas to possibly fix them. We fully realize that we are just two opinions out of the many pertaining to the education system, but if we don't start having the hard discussions then how can any real change ever happen? If you enjoy our discussion stay tuned for more in the series. We are looking to find all the holes in societal beliefs that might not be sitting well with many of you. Let us know if you agree:) I appreciate your support! If you feel called to support the podcast, leave a review on Spotify here or Apple here…And if you know someone who would benefit from this episode…Consider forwarding them this email.Other ways to find me:Instagram: wellness_matters_tribeFacebook: wellness mattersWebsite: wellnessmatterstribe.comMy book: The Missing Piece
There's a belief a surge in Kiwi parents making significant sacrifices to afford sending children to private schools won't last. In some instances, private school enrolments are closed until 2027, families are being asked to submit videos of their home life, and entrance tests are being made tougher. Independent Schools of New Zealand chief executive Guy Pascoe told Mike Hosking around 4% of New Zealand students are enrolled at private education. He says parents are making huge financial sacrifice to make it happen, and there's concern there'll be a point when parents simply can't afford it anymore. The provincial government wants to transform and modernize the education system in Newofundland and Labrador. It has engaged folks to come up with a 10-year roadmap called the Education Accord. Today on the show we speak with the co-chairs of the accord about the future of education in this province. Guests: Education Accord N.L. co-chairs Anne Burke and Karen Goodnough
The Education Minister says there's no argument for getting rid of some NCEA tests over fears some students will end up with no credits. RNZ reports principals from some of the country's poorest communities, want the Government to scrap new reading, writing, and maths tests. They say a number of Māori or Pacific students could end up leaving school without a qualification. Erica Stanford told Mike Hosking she is aware of every single student in that situation and is doing everything she can to turn it around. She says they've put in millions of dollars of targeted support to get them across the line. Stanford also says she's cut through the bureaucracy to building school property after a ministerial inquiry found the old model was inefficient and unfit for purpose. The Education Minister says since then, there's been a 35% increase in the number of standard buildings delivered, and a 28% reduction in the average cost of each classroom. She told Hosking the results of the new model have been obvious. Stanford says at Wellington Girls they built four two-storey blocks with 14 classrooms in 12 weeks, for $50 thousand each. There's a bit of pushback coming from some sectors in the education business towards the reading, writing, and maths tests. These are the tests we are failing. Those who are failing mostly come from poor backgrounds. I'm not sure equating monetary status and academic success should be a thing. But a bunch of principals from the "poorest communities" have got together to lobby the Government to stop the tests because they say it will lead to more kids leaving school with no qualifications. After two rounds of these tests more than half failed reading and writing and 75% failed numeracy. You can't get university entrance if you don't get these grades. Now, there is no doubt that failure affects attitude and there is equally no doubt that for some the “give it up” scenario must be tempting if the hurdle is too high. But then there's also no doubt that allowing kids to leave school having failed is a failure in and of itself. Any country that has any level of success globally is not a country that goes soft on education. The principals' answer is the answer that has failed us for years, which is also the Chris Hipkins Covid answer - give them something for nothing. An alternative to an exam is the extra 20 credits scenario that is due to expire at the end of 2027. They want that made permanent and instead of 20 credits they want it made into 60 credits. So, like Hipkins and Covid, extra credits for not actually doing anything. Just extra credits for life being a bit crap right now. No one gains when we do this. It is excuse making. It is an acceptance that we fail, and are failing, and failure is part of what we do. You can either read and write or you can't. You can either add up or you can't. And if you can't, having people pretend you can, won't fix anything. Part of why this country is where it is, is because we are apologists in areas like this and instead of being determined to fix it, we set about looking for ways to excuse it. Every discussion about the metacrisis ultimately highlights the broader public's lack of awareness about the world's interconnected complexity—and, inevitably, the failures of the education system. A recent study by the National Assessment for Education indicates that American students continue to lag behind in reading and math skills, suggesting that the public school system has not bounced back from pandemic-era disruptions. This is on top of a persistent crisis in recruiting and retaining quality teachers faced by the majority of American school districts. As further cuts to federal education funding loom, Radius of Reason welcomes former teacher and education advocate Connor Nowalk to take stock of this crisis in American public education, and to discuss potential solutions to this integral institution. As the battle over the future of education intensifies, Ravi takes a step back to ask a bold question: What if we could redesign K-12 education from the ground up? He breaks down what's working, what policymakers and educators have gotten wrong, and the bold, forward-thinking innovations that can best serve students in a rapidly changing world. In this special episode, Ravi explores everything from flexible school models and student-driven learning to how to prioritize mastery over grade levels and teacher autonomy over bureaucracy. He asks whether schools should mirror our increasingly individualistic society or act as a counterbalance to its isolation and what role educators should play in fostering student identity. Finally, Ravi unpacks the biggest barriers to innovation, why creativity and critical thinking should be at the core of modern learning, and what it would take to build a truly world-class education system.
