Only %7 of tech talent is Black. If we look at UX (User Experience) talent, that number goes down to 3%. Still, those numbers become harder to accept once we learn that those percentages haven't changed in the last 50 years. Considering tech's explosive growth in the last decades, the lack of change in the industry's representation can't be fortuitous.The way our guest, Amber Fields, knew about this data was rather accidental. Still, the ideas she developed and her actions to defy the status quo and disrupt the narrative about inclusion in the tech industry once she got access to this information were very intentional. Amber Fields is a Researcher, Storyteller, Speaker, DJ, and Founder of Black UX Labs, a coaching and consulting firm for black UX talent. She is passionate about promoting, including, sponsoring, and enticing audacity among Black and Brown talent in the tech industry. In this episode, Amber kindly describes her path from marketing and advertising to the tech and UX industry. We talk about the alarming disparity in representation in the industry and the C-Suite level of leading corporations. Amber explains the importance of getting more Black feet into the UX industry from an inclusiveness standpoint and a commercial and financial perspective. We also reflect on the need to create an audacious mindset within the Black and Brown community to face the "caucacity," Amber reveals the only factor capable of affecting and changing the tech and UX industry, and she shares advice for young folk who want to start their careers and aren't sure of where to start from. The entrants had until May 10th to finish and submit their tracks, with the winners getting released on a special UX compilation (digital), to be mastered by Joe himself and promoted like any other UX release. This week we will premiere two tracks from the V/A compilation, the first coming from young up and coming producer FLÆN. With releases already on the likes of Gobsmacked Records and Industrial Techno United, plus Tetraedre Records, Falsive Records and Revok Records, this latest release further adds to his already growing catalogue. Remixing French techno producers Ekors, this a techno re-work fit for any dance floor. Expect industrial and heavy drum work making this a peak-time dance floor destroyer. As an extra incentive, all profits from this release are being donated to Women's Aid charity, a worthy cause to support during these times. Diva Tech Talk interviewed Nafisa Bhojawala, Studio Chief for Cloud Design at Microsoft Corporation. Nafisa, the daughter of an engineer dad, and an art teacher mom, grew up in India, and Dubai, UAE.  “We grew up, drawing, painting, working on embroidery; just basically making things! But I also loved the clean rules of math and physics.  I learned to appreciate how the world works around me.” When Nafisa chose her university major, she wanted to specialize in fine arts. But her parents persuaded her to “pick a useful profession.” She decided on architecture and emigrated to Chicago to study at Illinois University of Technology. She spent one year, before she realized she was hooked on design, “looking at problems, and solving them, even on a smaller scale.” She logically matriculated into the design school. Nafisa then discovered computer technology.  “I used it first as a tool, as a designer, but very soon I began running into these frustrating situations while using the computer,” which prompted her to think about how challenges could be circumvented. She began “sketching out ways of doing it,” and taking programming classes to “go deeper, to understand how code is written.” Nafisa’s Capstone project was an interaction endeavor: a learning tool targeted to high school students. To gain confidence, she accepted an internship at Morningstar, the respected global financial firm offering influential investment research and recommendations, managing over $200 billion in institutional assets, and providing software/data platforms for investment professionals.  There “I worked for close to a year on a CD-ROM project,” Nafisa said. “They were converting their stock data into an information tool that financial planners could use. It was the first time I was working as a young designer, figuring out how to apply my visual skills to interaction design.”  After obtaining her degree, Nafisa joined The Doblin Group, a global innovation firm dedicated to solving complex problems through rigorous interdisciplinary approach.  It was another evolution for her. “Their work is very diverse. I learned how to do research there; apply business strategy to problems.”  It was there that Nafisa realized that “I like to design things that become real, and that I can see people using.” Through a friend, 19 years ago, Nafisa successfully interviewed for a design position at Microsoft. “When I joined my team, I felt like I had found my tribe: very talented people, supportive of each other. I had a great manager, and a fantastic mentor.  I could learn everything!” As she has moved into more senior leadership, she has come to the realization that “It takes a culture that supports growth and exploration…where people feel like they can take creative risks, and actually try things.” Nafisa shifted into program management and learned she needed to “lean on others.”  The key was also “being humble about it: being a learner,” she said. “Now I’m not afraid of pivoting.  I can figure it out. “ One of her revelations has been that early in her career she focused on how to get things done, (“because you need to perfect your craft”) but later in her career, she has had to “focus on the big picture, because I needed to solve bigger problems, that were more ambiguous.”  She takes pride in the fact that she feels comfortable “being the person who asks the stupid question.” That exercise often results in pinpointing the most innovative solutions. For example, working as a program manager for Microsoft Azure (Microsoft’s primary cloud platform providing a full portfolio of technical services for IT developers), Nafisa realized that there was a “weak link:  the customer research piece.” Accessing customer feedback was a complex issue as the product line was being developed. “There were various stakeholders, timelines were crazy, and we did not have resources.” In less than 6 months, she had created and led a “high trust” team, to “do research at a very fast clip;” and work with diverse user “personas” encompassing developers and IT professionals, to ensure high feature quality and useful deliverables across a decentralized product set.  Azure is robust and successful in part “because we figured out how to pump data through our decision-making process, from the time we decide what we want to build to actually building something.” Nafisa has now moved to leading the UX (User Experience) for Microsoft’s Power BI (Business Intelligence), PowerApps, and Flow, tools designed to elegantly provide the highest level of productivity to developers and others deploying BI rules inside the enterprise. “Now we are adding artificial intelligence and machine learning.  The responsiveness of systems is just at another level. You suddenly feel like you have more power, working for you.” Nafisa acknowledged: “I have a need to create. Art has always been the place I go to, my sanctuary.  It has, also, been a way for me to connect to a very different community, that I would not be connecting with in business. Her art “informs” her career and vice versa. It has taught her useful leadership precepts: “be optimistic about the process and the outcome; pour your soul into it; take risks along the way; recover from the failures you encounter.  You will discover you are very resilient. You know more than you think you do.” Nafisa also characterized her art as essential because “It helps me understand the ‘creatives’ I manage. It is a journey all of us go through.” As a busy mother, as well as business leader/artist, Nafisa achieves balance by “not thinking about perfection.” She works on doing a little bit better each time, bringing heightened awareness to each project.  And “I lean on others,” she said. “My partner who has an equally busy and chaotic work-life is my partner in parenting, too.” She stressed that “we can all be present in all parts of our lives, if we have a strong community to work with, that we trust.” Additionally, “I am very selective about what I spend time on.  I am a little bit ruthless, setting those boundaries.” Nafisa’s final piece of wisdom was simply “anything you choose to learn, can be learned. You get to decide. This week we're kicking of a mini-series on high-tech for business within a developing country context. We're talking to Elizabeth Rossiello, who co-founded BitPesa Ltd in 2014 and serves as its Chief Executive Officer. Elizabeth has worked in Kenya as a Microfinance Analyst and Investment Associate since 2009. She is an expert in East African financial product development and establishing best practices in risk, governance and IT for local banks. Prior to her work in East Africa, she served as an Analyst at Credit Suisse in Zurich and a Robert Bosch Fellow in Frankfurt. She speaks four languages and has a Masters in International Finance from Columbia University's SIPA. On this episode you'll learn: Cryptocurrency can be compared to how letters (snail mail) used to be sent to another country, and now email has replaced that. Cryptocurrency, or Bitcoin, was created to replace the traditional way of sending money to another person. Bitpesa is sending money around the world a lot cheaper than traditional means. They're increasing liquidity for companies. Bitpesa's business model is to take a small percentage on each international money transfer transaction. Bitpesa doesn't hold Bitcoin overnight so they're not affected by the fluctuating price that the currency has seen. Elizabeth built the simplest test case of how it could work. She hired one engineer and one UX (User Experience) team. They built it on the Mpesa system in Kenya to test it out. It took a month and a half. Their first customer traded in January 2014, and they relaunched in April with a market-ready product. The regulatory framework was setup for traditional money transfers, but Bitpesa showed they were doing the same thing just using a different tool to do so. Working with regulators still makes up part of their work today. It's about ensuring they're following the rules, and keeping the focus away from what the technology is. They've had plenty of setbacks, such as being sued by Safaricom in Kenya, and potential investors who learnt from their company and ended up creating something similar. Bitpesa started out on a small $50k seed investment which they used to build the prototype, and then raised follow on investment from international investors. Follow on investors were only willing to put in cash for 6-12 months runway, so Elizabeth says it was a really inefficient fundraising process. Elizabeth advises to enjoy the ride, because it's a long journey. Enjoy building a company that you want to work for. And take care of yourself along the way. User Experience (UX) is an integral part of design, be it in the physical world or the digital world. It is the practice of putting the user first, creating empathy for the users of your systems. "If the user can't use it, it doesn't work" -- Susan Dray Lizzie Dyson and Georgie Bottomley, both UX (User Experience) professionals, loved their jobs but there was always a doubt about where the other women in the industry were. So they started the first Ladies that UX meetup in Manchester, UK, and it exploded. Lara was looking for an international community to connect with when she discovered Ladies that UX and it _stuck_. The Cape Town LTUX meetup is the first African chapter of LTUX, started by Lara. Inez and co-organizer Ridhwana launched the Johannesburg chapter of Ladies that UX on the 31st of August 2017. We hear from Inez, Ridhwana & Lara about their general experiences as women in tech, and why community events are so important to support each other. With Ladies that UX having over 50 chapters around the world, it gives also enables them and other community members to connect with each other. Both events focus on creating a safe and inclusive space for woman in the UX field to connect, share & learn from each other. Each event follows a slightly format, from lean coffee and/or cocktails to workshops and presentations. Garantire la massima UX (User Experience) nelle proprie applicazioni non è un compito facile, soprattutto quando si parla dell'universo mobile dove uniformità, transizioni e animazioni sono ormai imprescindibili, ma è anche necessario tenere sotto controllo le risorse allocate per garantire performance ottimali e risparmiare memoria preziosa sul device. La soluzione semplicistica adottata da molti di inserire tutto all'interno di una singola finestra sfruttando controlli di paginazione non è più sufficiente: ci rende schiavi di una struttura monolitica che rende ingestibili i progetti più complessi e comporta diversi effetti collaterali. Per tentare di risolvere questo tipo di problemi, ci viene in aiuto il componente TFrameStand, creato da Andrea Magni (programmatore Delphi, consulente informatico e MVP Embarcadero). In questa puntata discutiamo queste problematiche con Andrea parlando delle possibili soluzioni e approfondiamo le caratteristiche di questo innovativo controllo visuale, gratuito e open source, che sfrutta le potenzialità di FireMonkey per creare interfacce utente (UI) accattivanti beneficiando di tutto il supporto grafico offerto dalla libreria, con la possibilità di organizzare al meglio la struttura del progetto suddividendo gli elementi dell'interfaccia in diverse "viste" caricabili dinamicamente a run-time grazie all'uso dei Frame, presenti in Delphi già da parecchi anni, e con la facoltà di definire stili, transizioni, animazioni ed effetti a piacimento, testabili addirittura in fase di progettazione grazie al supporto design-time.
