We start the new year with part three of The Rise of Endymion by Dan Simmons from 1997. We return with...exposition! In a very long scene on the popesteroid, Pope Hoyt brings in Councilor Albedo to explain to the various church leaders that Aenea is carrying a literal engineered virus that will spread through humanity, kill off the cruciforms, and then evolve humans into the Ousters. This is apparently a bad thing? So to combat that, they have been putting billions of people without cruciforms in stasis and stashing them in the labyrinth worlds in a plan that the TechnoCore promises totally isn't evil, swearsies. Anyway, remember all that stuff about the three warring factions in the TechnoCore? Yeah, apparently that's not really the case so just forget all that. This revelation just about breaks Fillip's spirit. Meanwhile, Raul spends an interminable amount of time floating through the atmosphere of a gas giant in his kayak looking at clouds. Eventually, he's eaten by a giant cuttlefish thing, but then we just join up with Raul after the cuttlefish flings him through the next Farcaster to end up back with the Consul's ship. The fact that we spend no time with Raul in the cuttlefish is the most baffling thing since the fact those things on that ice planet were called "wraiths". Anyway, Raul and the ship head off to find Aenea, but conveniently, meeting her will incur a five-year time debt, so she'll be an adult by the time Raul arrives. Those noises you here are Danielle gagging at the thought, and frankly, we're all on her side. So we enter part two of the book on a real downer, will Raul and Aenea finally meet up? Will it be as creepy as we fear? Probably! Special thanks to friend of the pod and honorary co-host Filip from Mind Duck Books for joining us on this thrilling journey! In this special edition of World Business Report on the day of the opening ceremony in Paris, we're on the banks of the Seine where the event takes place, and hear from businesses who say that the security lockdown in the area has hit their trade badly. Will Bain also goes behind the scenes of what it takes to run a team involved in the Olympics. Each country has a Team Leader or Ambassador - or in Olympics terminology they're called Chef de Mission. we hear from Anindya Bakrie who has this role looking after the Indonesian team - he is CEO of Bakrie and Brothers, one of the country's biggest conglomerates. And we look at how smaller brands are muscling in on the bigger names of fashion giants such as Ralph Lauren, Stella McCartney and Nike. This year's games will see some smaller labels on the podium as athletes wear less-well known clothing brands.
This week on T&B we're revisiting a few “strands” from last week's episode, rehashing an old conversation about FILLIP, taking another look at those GLUTEI, and having feelings about MICROMINI. Are we VICTIMs of the Bee's befuddling ways…or are we active agents in the experience of our own game play? There's only one way to find out.
India blocked access to nine foreign cryptocurrency exchanges on 12th of January. The government believed that these offshore platforms were not complying with the country's anti-money laundering law. And investors were also using them to circumvent TDS costs. Some of them -- like Binance -- were quite popular among domestic investors. But now, crypto investors are reportedly flocking to domestic exchanges. There is a surge in registration. So will this crackdown on offshore exchanges help desi crypto platforms? Clearly, there are signs of thaw in the ongoing crypto winter. It started with the collapse of the famous foreign exchange FTX. But for many, winter means a season of earnings. The longer it is, the better. But, even as north India is reeling under a prolonged spell of winter, its famous skiing resorts are without snow. Locals in Uttarakhand's Auli and Kashmir's Gulmarg -- whose livelihood depends on tourists -- are looking towards the sky for some divine help, as tourists are cancelling bookings. But why are hills in these regions facing a snowless winter? After the hills, let us now turn our gaze to financial markets. The government's ‘Make in India' push and indigenisation in the defence space opened floodgates for order flows for most PSUs in 2023. Nearly 30% of the stocks doubled investors' wealth last year, while 27 stocks hit record highs. The rally has extended thus far in 2024 with the Nifty PSE index touching its all-time high level on January 16. But the rally has taken valuation multiples to multi-year highs. So, will the pack be able to defend its gains? Or is a sharp correction waiting around the corner? After stocks, let us now see what is happening in the world of cryptocurrencies. The US Securities and Exchange Commission last week approved applications for exchange-traded funds or ETF, that are primarily based on bitcoin. Supporters hope it will attract new investors to the token and boost its price in the long term. But what is the Bitcoin Spot ETF? Find out about it in this episode of the podcast.

Fillip is a noun that refers to the act of flicking a finger against something. Our word of the day has an etymology similar to the words ‘flick' or ‘flip.' They are all from Middle English. Fillip in particular, has retained the same of ‘making a flip with the fingers.' The word can also be used as a verb that means ‘to flip something with a finger.' Here's an example of both: I wanted to fillip my boss on the nose when he delivered the bad news. But I feared that a fillip wouldn't have been a good idea at that time.
Alice Reimer is the current CEO of Fillip and former site lead at CDL-Rockies, based at the Haskayne School of Business at University of Calgary. She co-founded Calgary-based Evoco, leading the SaaS firm from initial concept through to a 2012 acquisition. Alice has been recognized as Canada's Top Female Entrepreneurs by PROFIT W100. Alice has contributed to building the innovation ecosystem in Alberta for the last two decades. She is a successful technology entrepreneur and dedicated community mentor, and she does it all with a great sense of humour.

As I type, writer/director Peter Hengl's debut horror film, "Family Dinner," premieres at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York. It's a horror film about 15-year-old Simi (Nina Katlein in a tour-de-force debut performance), who travels to her nutritionist aunt Claudia's (Pia Hierzegger) for Easter weekend in hope she'll help Simi lose weight. Soon, Simi is isolated in Claudia's forest home, with nothing to look at but trees, her misogynist cousin Fillip (Alexander Sladek) and Claudia's post-divorce lover Stefan (Michael Pink). At first, Claudia's infantilizing relationship with Fillip and her devoted set of dietary rules just seems par for the course for someone whose life's devoted to maintaining their health at peak performance, but as the days progress, Simi uncovers a more sinister, disturbing side to her aunt. | Follow me on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that India's Central Bank Digital Currency or CBDC will revolutionise the fintech sector by creating new opportunities and lessen the burden in handling, printing and logistics management of cash, apart from making digital payments and online transfer of funds more secure. A currency is a currency only when it is issued by the central bank, even if it is a crypto. Anything outside of that, loosely we refer to them as cryptocurrencies, are not currencies: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. A day after announcing the launch of digital rupee in the Union Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman told a press conference that (Read the quote). RBI governor Shaktikanta Das has already shared his strong views against the private digital currency which is decentralised and can be issued by anyone. In her budget speech, the finance minister said that the digital rupee will be launched using blockchain and other technologies. But a financial daily, quoting some senior officials, said that the RBI may consider other “centralised” technology models apart from blockchain to host its proposed digital currency. So the exact regulations governing India's digital currency are yet to be finalised. But before looking at the possible use cases of a CBDC, let us understand how it works. While the government treats private cryptocurrency as an asset, a CBDC is a legal tender issued by a central bank in a digital form. Issued by the RBI, it will be fungible with physical currency. It is sovereign currency in an electronic form and would appear as a liability on the central bank's balance sheet, just like the banknotes in circulation. The two major categories of CBDCs are wholesale and retail. Wholesale CBDC is designed for use among financial intermediaries, such as between the central bank and commercial banks. While, retail CBDC is meant for the general public. This type of digital currency can be based on blockchain or distributed ledger technology that can validate transactions. For example, China's central bank currency, the digital yuan, does not use blockchain. Retail CBDC can be issued directly by the RBI to the public or through commercial banks. Economic Affairs Secretary Ajay Seth has said the RBI would be issuing both wholesale and retail digital rupee. He also raised the possibility of deploying smart contracts using CDBC. Smart contracts are programs on blockchain that automatically execute decisions when predetermined conditions are met. In a speech last year, RBI Deputy Governor T Rabi Sankar listed out the advantages that CBDCs have over other digital payments systems. He said that payments using CBDCs are final and thus reduce settlement risk in the financial system. The need for interbank settlement is eliminated if digital rupee is transacted on a UPI-like system, Sankar added. CBDCs would also potentially enable a more cost-effective globalisation of payment systems. An Indian importer could pay an American exporter on a real-time basis without the need for an intermediary. The time zone difference would no longer matter in currency settlements. 90 countries representing 90% of the global GDP are currently exploring digital currencies. Of these, 16 countries are now in the pilot stage while nine countries have launched a digital currency. India will soon join this small group of countries with a digital currency. Watch video

Bio Orchestra is a collaboration project with Plant Physiologist Sander van der Krol, from the department Plant Physiology of Wageningen University. Based on the knowledge and methods of Wageningen University, Tom Kortbeek is developing a plant orchestra by translating growth data into sound. This interdisciplinary project tested the applicability of art and science throughout the process. In this podcast we are going to listen to the process development in this Art -Science project. What kind of story do you want to tell as an artist? What are the potentials, and pitfalls of an interdisciplinary project like this? And of course Tom performs the actual plant music made with the Bio Orchestra. As mentioned in the last episode we will be broadening our scope in this third season of the podcast. One of the ways in which we’ll be doing this is by guest curated and produced mini series alongside our own episodes. We’ll have students, alumni and professionals producing their own stories right here in this feed. This episode is exactly that: a series about arts and science produced by Fillip Studio’s, alumni of the academy.
