In episode 647, Lisa Steele teaches us how to make a drastic change to our niche and online presence like she did by going from lifestyle blogging to food content creation. Lisa Steele is an author, blogger and 5th generation chicken keeper living in Maine. She started her business more than 10 years ago and grew a successful "chicken lifestyle" blog called Fresh Eggs Daily. In 2022, Lisa got a cookbook deal with HarperCollins and that started her pivot to egg recipes and cooking. In this episode, you'll learn about the challenges to expect when you start a new food blog, positioning yourself as an expert in your niche and how to successfully build a multifaceted online presence Key points discussed include: - Focus on your goals, not what others are doing: Determine your unique objectives and align your activities accordingly, rather than comparing yourself to other bloggers. - Streamline your activities ruthlessly: Regularly evaluate your tasks and drop anything that doesn't directly contribute to your goals, even if it's popular with others. - Develop a thick skin for criticism: Expect and be prepared to handle negative feedback, as it often comes with success. Don't take it personally. - Leverage your expertise and authority: Position yourself as the go-to expert in your niche, which can open up opportunities like media appearances and partnerships. - Prioritize engagement over follower count: Publishers are more interested in your ability to connect with and influence your audience than just the size of your following. - Recognize the long-term benefits of cookbooks: While the initial monetary rewards may not be as immediate as your blog, cookbooks can provide passive income and increased credibility over time. - Be prepared for the challenges: Understand that both food blogging and cookbook writing require significant time, effort, and resilience, but the rewards can be worth it if aligned with your goals. In the exciting return of the Farming For Dummies podcast for season 2 we are kicking things off with the Queen of Chickens, Lisa Steele of Fresh Eggs Daily. We discuss the current chicken feed conspiracies, egg shortages and some of the most popular myths around chickens.
"Egg lovers rejoice! If you think you know everything about eggs, think again. Lisa Steele of the beloved blog Fresh Eggs Daily with over 1-million fans, shares her new cookbook with 100 inspired recipes. She is dishing with us on how to spot a great egg, the differences between various eggs…and delicious ways to incorporate eggs into every meal. Plus, I have a marvelous Mushroom Tutorial for you and a Parsnip and Apple Soup recipe that you will love."
They call her "Queen of the Coop" for a reason. Lisa Steele is a 5th generation chicken keeper, author, blogger, and TV host - just name a few things on her plump resume. While she grew up across the street from her grandparents' chicken farm and she herself had chickens, there was no real desire to do that as a career. She went to school to be an accountant and worked on Wall Street for about 7 years when one day, out of the blue, she says she just had enough. It wasn't until several years later that she got some chickens and started posting pictures of them on social media. She says she noticed she was answering the same questions about raising chickens so decided a blog would be a helpful spot for others to find information. It wasn't until a few books in that the lightbulb really went off for her and Lisa said she realized this could be a full-blown career. She explains why eggs are so expensive these days and what you should look for on the carton. Her insanely popular website and blog is where you can find all things chicken and eggs, including recipes. She came out with a cookbook last year, "Fresh Eggs Daily," which is also the name of her website and blog. Follow Lisa on social media for not only fun videos of chickens, but tips and tricks and delicious recipes. *This episode sponsored by The Culinarium : Gourmet Provisions and Fine Kitchenware.*

In today's fast-paced world, where virtually every recipe can be conjured up by doing a quick search online, do cookbooks really matter? After hearing this week's show, we think you'll join us in a resounding yes. Cookbooks teach us techniques and introduce us to new ingredients and cultures. They expand our palates and remind us of old-fashioned ways of doing things – ways that can evoke memories of our long-lost loved ones. On this week's show, we meet Mason Hereford of Turkey and the Wolf and Molly's Rise and Shine. This relative newcomer has caused quite a stir here in New Orleans, serving formerly mundane items like a fried bologna sandwich, and transforming them into works of art. That's just one of the reasons Bon Appétit named Turkey and the Wolf America's best new restaurant in 2017. Mason has become a fixture in national culinary headlines, but his most recent story had nothing to do with his kitchen. He tells us the story of how the first print run of his debut cookbook ended up at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Then, we hear from fifth-generation chicken keeper, Lisa Steele, whose blog "Fresh Eggs Daily" inspired her new book of the same name. Lisa shares her story as well as some egg-centric tips and tricks. Finally, we speak with David B. Hazelwood, who, along with David G. Smith, authored Cooking Southern: Recipes and Their History. At 586 pages thick, the new tome compiles over 1,800 historic recipes going back generations.

Having backyard chickens, like having your own garden, is a small but significant way to take control of your food and decrease its carbon footprint. While backyard chicken keeping has become more popular in recent years, some people are still intimidated by the idea.In this episode, we are talking to Lisa Steele, fifth generation chicken keeper and author of Fresh Eggs Daily and Duck Eggs Daily. Lisa tells us about the circuitous route she took before becoming a chicken owner and why she loves having hens in her backyard. She also talks about her favorite breed of chicken, as well as what's acceptable when you want to give your chickens a treat (or two). We also talk briefly about the option to keep ducks for eggs. How are ducks and duck eggs different than chickens? And who might prefer one or the other? And I mention the one time I was ready to say good bye to our ducks.Full show notes here -- https://thriftyhomesteader.com/fresh-eggs-daily/

“A lot of it was just being in the right place at the right time. Back in 2009, when backyard chickens got really popular, there wasn’t a lot out there.”— Lisa SteeleFresh Eggs Daily started off as a simple blog about raising backyard chickens. Author Lisa Steele had no plans to monetize it and intended to just use it as an archive. But over the last 12 years, Lisa has grown it into a dynamic, multifaceted brand that includes a lively presence on all social media platforms, a private label product line, six books, and a television show on NBC in Maine.Somehow, she still has the time to continue raising her happy and healthy chickens — and to appear as my guest on this episode!Prior to building her chicken empire, Lisa worked as a corporate accountant and financial controller, so she is very familiar with the importance of understanding your numbers. This knowledge helped her to grow her business more quickly.“I don’t think a lot of people really understand how to calculate how much money they’re making, if they’re making money. There’s a lot involved,” Lisa says. “It’s not just ‘I sell it for $25 and it cost me $10’... you know, there’s a lot more to it than that if you’re going to run a successful business.”Tune in for a fascinating discussion about making profit, lean operations, and tips for making a splash on social media! In this episode, you’ll discover: The first steps Lisa took to monetize her blogHow Lisa built a global audience organically, without boosting posts or advertisingWhy Lisa got out of a licencing deal and went with a private labelAbout Lisa SteeleWith an audience of nearly a million global followers on social media, fifth-generation chicken keeper Lisa Steele, AKA “The Queen of the Coop”, is the creative force behind Fresh Eggs Daily, the most popular destination for natural poultry keeping advice on the internet. Organic REV The first thing to understand about REV is that it is not an ordinary humic acid product that is chemically-extracted from leonardite, lignite, or other coals. Rather, it is a 100% naturally-occurring carbon, humic acid & fulvic acid source - along with exceptionally high levels of naturally-occurring microbial biomass that can increase nitrogen efficiency by up to 25%. REV replaces depleted soil carbon & bacterial biomass - and absorbs nutrients to make them more readily available to plants via their root systems. With over 654,000 likes on her Facebook Page, 700,000 visitors to her blog each month and 20 different revenue streams, this girl knows what she's talking about! We are privileged to hear her talk about her Facebook Page strategy, how she's monetized her blog (so many great ideas!) and how she deals with haters.
