Do you sometimes feel like you're in the passenger seat of your life? In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I chat with Jake Steinfeld, aka Body By Jake, about how he used his love and passion for fitness to get into Hollywood and build some of the biggest businesses in the fitness industry ever. For the longest time, Jake felt like life was happening to him - until he didn't want that to be the case anymore. After he lost a huge opportunity in Hollywood, he decided to venture out on his own and become the king of infomercials in the fitness world. Throughout his entrepreneurial journey, he learned a lot of lessons and got a couple of slaps in the face, but he eventually put himself in the driver's seat of his own life. Jake also shares what clients he had when he first started in the fitness industry as a trainer, how he grew his network as he was building his business, and why he considers the infomercial business to be a lot more profitable than the movie industry can ever be. Jake "Body by Jake" Steinfeld has been an innovator and entrepreneur since creating the personal fitness training industry. He established "Body by Jake" Inc. in 1980 to the benefits of healthy living - and the motivation to get there. Jake also created FiT TV, America's first 24-hour fitness lifestyle television network which he sold to News Corp. He is the founder of Major League Lacrosse and the World Series of Youth Lacrosse. He was also appointed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to serve as Chairman of the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness. What we discuss: 00:33: About Jake 10:14: How did Jake grow up? 18:40: Why did Jake know he wouldn't make it as a bodybuilder? 23:48: How did Jake get his first client? 28:30: What happened when Jake got approached by a publisher? 31:56: What happened to Jake's stutter? 36:16: Who thought Jake the most? 37:32: For how long did Jake train people? 41:03: What are the slaps in the face that Jake got? 46:18: Did Jake ever think of leveraging the relationships he had developed? 50:08: Who else did Jake train? 59:22: Did Jake always consider himself to be entrepreneurial? 01:04:59: How did Jake grow his network? 01:06:51: What did Jake do with the money he acquired from selling his business? 01:09:21: How did Jake get his first advertisers for his magazine? 01:14:08: How did Jake get started with infomercials? 01:21:26: What's the greatest thing about the infomercial business? 01:23:43: Did Jake own a piece of every company he promoted? 01:28:10: What are Jake's workouts like? 01:40:40: How can you learn more about Jake? Key takeaways: You shouldn't be afraid of asking people for favors or chasing any type of business opportunity. Someone telling you “no” is already a good start - it's halfway towards being a yes. So whenever you are faced with a no, consider yourself to be closer to a “yes” than you've ever been and keep pushing. If you want to take control of your destiny and be in the driver's seat of your life, you need to go out and build what it is you want for yourself. If you don't do that, you will forever be in the passenger seat of your life and waiting for opportunities and disappointments to fall into your lap. Your network is truly your net worth. When you invest a lot of time and energy into developing a relationship with someone — especially people with power and influence — don't be afraid to ask for a favor when you need one. Just be sure that you can scratch their back in the future if you're asking them to scratch yours. — By thinking it's all about physical health, we are under-utilizing “the workout.” Renown fit pro, Ellen Barrett, discusses how you can use movement to enhance every facet of your life, body, mind & spirit. It's a key to longevity and happiness, when you do it right. One of the topics of this conversation is lifestyle medicine which is about choosing the good for you variation more often than not! Ellen explains that there's big lifestyle medicine and then there is a subtler kind — exercise habit is big, and the “big three” are sleep, diet and exercise. She always put sleep first because so much physical and mental restoration happens during sleep. But she asks us not to underestimate (or ignore) the subtler medicine. It can really pack a punch and totally transform your life.” Valeria Teles interviews Ellen Barrett, M.A. — is a seasoned fitness and yoga instructor, with dozens of blockbuster videos, including Crunch: Fat Burning Pilates, Prevention: Flat Belly Series, and The Yogini Workout. She starred in Fit TV's cable television show, All-Star Workouts, for over 10 years, and has traveled the world leading instructor trainings. Ellen is also the author of four wellness books, her latest being 28 Day Lighter Diet (Skirt!, 2014), a wellness book that delves into women and weight release. She also taught her first yoga class to fellow inmates. Released in 2014, she received her first certification in Herbal Medicine. In 2015, Sherri attended Yogaville and received her first diploma. How do we spiritually transcend in the Age of Chaos? Who am I? Where do we go when we leave our bodies? In this episode, we discuss what it means to transcend in the age of chaos, how to gain clarity through authentic spiritual practice and how to use spiritual wisdom to self-reflect and evolve your path. We get into the deeper questions of life, such as “who am I” and “where do we go when we leave here.” We then examine spiritually-based happiness versus material pleasure, as well as how to use the window of grief to strengthen our spiritual practice. We summarize the conversation with some tools for you to take away, such as how to choose a qualified spiritual teacher and how to connect through mantra and prayer, so I highly recommend you listen through to the end. Chef Nathan Lyon teaches us about Fiber Fourteen, why fiber is so important for our overall health, and why great food starts fresh. About Fiber Fourteen: Fiber Fourteen is the passion project of Nathan Lyon, an Emmy-nominated Outstanding Culinary Host, acclaimed Cookbook Author and classically trained Chef with a Health Science background and Sarah Forman, a Recipe Developer, Recipe Tester and Project Manager. In the fall of 2016, a family member (a parent) was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. A routine colonoscopy revealed a suspicious polyp which was later diagnosed as a “not a major concern” stage 1 cancer. However, a second opinion classified it as stage 2, possibly stage 3. Needless to say, this news came as a total shock to everyone. And, what first began as a short visit home to help navigate the diagnoses, turned into a 2-month stay – through the duration of the first-round of treatment: a 6-week course of radiation. Nathan and Sarah took over the responsibility of cooking during the treatment. Given the type of cancer, treatment and possible gastrointestinal side effects, Nathan and Sarah began making slight adjustments to their recipes. Mind you, their meals have always been on the healthy side: plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, good fats, lean proteins and everything from scratch. But, they decided to make a small change built on a simple idea: decrease the percentage of animal protein so that the majority of the meal is vegetable based (i.e. increase fiber). Armed with their new idea, the challenge was to make those vegetables even more delicious and more satiating than ever before; to make them the star of the show, rather than just humble backup singers. The meals cooked during this time evolved into the beginner version of the now full-grown Fiber Fourteen Meal Plan, a 14 day fiber-rich, calorie-light recipe meal plan designed to improve your health. As for the family member who was diagnosed with cancer? They made it through all of their treatments, are recovering quite well and above all, they are living their dreams… Learn more about Fiber Fourteen at: www.fiberfourteen.com/ About Chef Nathan Lyon: Emmy nominated Chef Nathan Lyon is known to television viewers across the country for his simple, innovative cuisine featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients. Chef and co-host of Growing A Greener World (PBS) and host of Good Food America with Nathan Lyon (Veria), Nathan was the creator and host of A Lyon in the Kitchen (Discovery Health and Fit TV), among the final four on the second season of The Next Food Network Star, and appeared as a guest chef and expert on Home Made Simple (TLC) and Real Simple Real Life (TLC). Nathan obtained a Bachelor of Science in Health Science and a minor in Public health from James Madison University and attended culinary school at Le Cordon Bleu in Los Angeles, where he earned a Culinary Arts degree. Since that time, Nathan has worked in many restaurants, both in and out of the kitchen, and has also worked with local growers in California farmers markets for over a decade. Nathan published his cookbook, Great Food Starts Fresh, which has been quoted by Alice Waters, Graham Kerr, Curtis Stone and Jamie Oliver and made the Washington Post’s esteemed “Top Cookbooks” list. Nathan received the honor of an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Culinary Host” in 2013. Link to Chef Nathan Lyon’s Website: www.chefnathanlyon.com/

Devin Alexander, Media Personality, Multi-time New York Times Bestselling Author, Restaurateur, Healthy Comfort Food Chef, Weight Loss Expert, and Chef of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser,” is passionate about making women feel good. Today on the EO Podcast, Devin discusses her journey to entrepreneurship and overall health. Tune-in to learn how Devin put herself on the scene with persistence, research, and a bit of “stalkiness,” despite the challenges she faced personally and with others. Find out how Devin can now, with a smile, truly say that she’s “fantastic.” Time Stamped Show Notes: 00:40 – Devin’s Entrepreneurial Journey: She set out to make women feel great 00:49 – When she was 15 she weighed 200 pounds and was bullied in school; she wrote poems and knew that there was something better in store for her 01:15 – She didn’t get into school for theater, which is what she wanted; she started reading cookbooks and trying to lose weight by cutting just 100 calories a day 02:24 – She lost 25-35 pounds in the first year and never planned to be a chef, but through transforming her cooking and losing the weight, she transformed her mindset 02:50 – Devin feel that she still doesn’t have willpower, but by cooking in better ways she doesn’t need it 03:06 – She graduated from Smith College and got an apprenticeship with the Television Academy in LA 03:53 – She volunteered to cook at charity events and celebrities figured out that she could make people’s favorites much better 04:20 – She went to culinary school thinking she’d eventually go back to screenwriting 04:50 – She wound up owning a catering business and “ghostcooking,” where she’d cook and the client would take the credit 05:28 – She learned that this would be great for dates 05:56 – She went through a premature mid-life crisis at 27; she was too thin and her food issues came to a head and she didn’t feel good 06:20 – She wound up in Overeaters Anonymous and realized that catering was not her passion; she is an entrepreneur with a love for cooking 06:57 – She took a job in the media world (Muscle and Fitness Magazine) so she could understand it 07:20 – This catapulted her career, she learned the media side and made demo reels with her friend that made it look like Devin was the host of a cooking video series called “A Slice of Devin” 08:31 – She went to NATPE (National Association of Television Program Executives) every year, learned the guest list, interned, and sought to meet the right people 09:14 – She sat in the lobby of Weller Grossman Productions because she knew that one of the principals was really nice 09:27 – She felt that she had a chance to convince him to put her on the show “Smart Solutions” on the Home & Gardens Network and it worked 09:40 – This was her first ever national TV spot (her first TV appearance) 09:54 – She went to NATPE every year; Devin and Karen Kripalani found a Craigs List ad looking for people that didn’t go to their high school prom for a TV pilot for Bravo 10:30 – She went in for an interview, she knew the company did shows on Food Network 11:00 – Her dad was in the hospital at the time, she was working at Muscle and Fitness Magazine, and she got a callback asking her to be on the show and attend a prom in Glendale 11:13 – They offered to send her to her high school’s prom, realized she could cook well, and were able to get her a pilot offer on Food Network 11:35 – After that (and some “stalk-y” things she did on her own) she was getting TV bookings; after her first book was done, her book got publicity she met the producers of Biggest Loser 12:15 – She turned down a pilot offer on Food Network but it wasn’t the right fit; she was attached to 13 different shows before she got her first show on Discovery Health and Fit TV 13:00 – She stalked the Food Network’s production companies and continued being persistent until someone making the decisions changed their mind 13:25 – How does someone transform their mindset out of a negative state? 13:39 – Devin has a sister who had always loved to work out 14:10 – It wasn’t until she was at a Biggest Loser resort, she was getting paid to be there, and she was taken on a 2.5 hour hike, that she realized that she loved it 14:20 – Devin wished she could always get paid to work out; she doesn’t like the time it takes to work out 14:55 – She used to think working out was a waste of time; the only thing she could think of was when she was going to be done 15:10 – Now Devin plays tennis with a group and they also have parties together; she realized that she was being hypocritical by telling people to pursue their dreams while not pursuing her own to become a mom and find a guy 16:10 – She’s in the process of fostering a baby; her heart is attached to foster children and she might have a baby this year 17:00 – She has a few big projects coming up; she had a good run and was on top of the healthy movement for a long time 17:10 – She had restaurants on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line thinking it would make her long-term income, but it wasn’t as easy as she thought 17:44 – It took her out of the TV world and she was in a car accident that caused a TBI that took 1 year to fully rehabilitate 18:00 – She’s back and getting involved with a start-up, a TV deal is pending, and a couple other things are in the works 18:18 – She feels like she’s back and going in the right direction; she just got back from an event in Loretto, Mexico at a spa “Celebrity Chef Pastry Week” 18:36 – She decided that she is going to pursue love; she wants to be “in love” with every aspect of her life and this has inspired her entrepreneurial journey, confidence, and journey to have a child 19:15 – Many people have reached out to support and love her in the journey to have her child 19:57 – Many doctors and dieticians are in a hurry to give blanket diet instructions; those statements like “never eat red meat,” or “get enough sleep and cut out stress,” aren’t so simple 22:22 – She takes the calorie-counting out of her diet and recognizes the things she loves and what needs to be eaten in moderation (meat and fried foods) 23:10 – She usually doesn’t eat so many vegetables when she eats out because they are sopped in oil; she’d rather skip those and eat a little chocolate and plain tomatoes in her room later 23:40 – When she travels she gets a room with a fridge and gets her healthy snacks at a grocery store 24:27 – She knows herself; if she’s tired she craves food, so if she has to pick between sleep and working out, she’d rather sleep 24:45 – There’s no amount of working out to combat the amount of food she’d eat when she’s exhausted trying to get energy 25:05 – These are the things she knows about her body that she helps clients learn about themselves to find success 25:16 – Tips for entrepreneurs: Operate with passion 25:56 – She knows that she has a message and knows that she can help people and this excites her and keeps her going; she truly wants women to feel good 26:10 – Dave Kerpen, author of “The Art of People” and Mark Moses have really affected her with their EO talks 26:50 – She learned that anytime someone asks you how you are you should be fantastic 27:11 – The next time she was in Trader Joe’s, she was totally in her head and remembered to say she was “fantastic” 27:50 – The bagger and checker were surprised and asked her why so she told them about the seminar and realized that she is, in fact, doing fantastically 28:55 – We all have the same struggles and challenges as entrepreneurs, but at the end of the day, it is pretty fantastic 29:16 – Get centered on what is good for you in your life, diet, and business Key Points: Be persistent when pursuing your goals; don’t stop until you get a “yes” and don’t quit because of other’s negativity. Operate with passion; this will keep your work exciting, impactful, and mission-driven. Be centered, balanced, and fantastic...because you truly are. She shares her thoughts on how to deal with the “haters” and Lisa invites us to keep a thick skin while still being open to learning from constructive feedback. Lisa shares her thoughts on how we all can make a difference and that there is room for each of us to create an impression in this world. Bring your heart to the world and then create connection, connection and more connection. Lisa encourages us to deliver on our promises, stay true to who we are and reminds us that as much as it can be tempting to try and please everyone, this will never allow us to do our best work. We go back to the moment Lisa decided that the last performance she did at Lincoln Center would be her last professional performance as a dancer. We share our thoughts about the losses that come with staying in alignment with what is true to our desires and dreams. Lisa has always been in a leadership role and she shares the commonalities in the women who are leaders and whom she admires: Women who support women Women who create a fun environment Women who encourage you to push for excellence (not perfection) We wrap up our conversation talking about value and the importance of deep friendships, especially as we strive for growth and excellence. We share that it is so important to celebrate each other and open the doors for those around us. We talk about the importance of being able to be friends in the comfortable times and also have the hard conversations. Dan Partland, Executive Producer of the upcoming Fit to Fat to Fit TV docu-series joins Drew and Lynn to discuss the making of the show. Dan mentions he was surprised to discover the unconscious biases towards super fit people as well as the biases people have about obese people. Or now you can subscribe to just the interviews from our radio show on iTunes by clicking this link.We learn how all about the how to get in shape for your wedding from Sue Fleming, the creator and star of the popular TV show Buff Brides. Fitness expert Sue Fleming is the creator of the Buff Fitness® workout regimen. The program’s popularity led to a critically acclaimed reality TV series – Buff Brides – on Discovery Health Channel, still in reruns on Fit TV. Sue’s new Buff line of workout DVDs are based on her book series, which includes Buff Brides, Buff Moms, Buff Moms-to-Be and Fashionably Buff. Sue is also on the team of ExerciseTV, a new television network dedicated to fitness, motivation and sports training. Segments from each of Sue’s Buff workout DVDs can be viewed free on-demand by all Comcast, Time Warner and Cox digital cable customers. Sue, a naturally competitive athlete, instinctively knew the better the bride looked and felt out of her clothes, the more magical she would look (and feel!) while donning the breath-taking couture creation of her fantasy wedding. And so was born the Buff Fitness regimen. Far more than another cleverly packaged brand, Fleming has brought a sense of steadfast teamwork to a results oriented regimen that has grown into a global health and fitness empire. A native of New York’s Long Island, Fleming found her calling early on as she yearned for the camaraderie of team sports first at Riverhead High School and later while attending Canisius College in Buffalo, NY, where she earned her Masters. This proved to be particularly challenging in an era when women in sports were still a relative rarity. “I was so grateful for women like Chris Evert and Billie Jean King, as they proved that women could be strong and athletic…and win!? recalls Fleming. Sue says that whether you have six days or six months you can make a huge difference in the way you look and feel. The real challenge however is to maintain it for 60 years. That’s where Sue takes over. Dedicated to working with clients to overcome their fears of fitness and body image, Sue develops the most important muscle of all…self-esteem. Rather than resting on her well-toned laurels, Sue sees endless possibilities in bringing her message of fitness to the world. That’s why Sue wants women to understand that a fitness regimen is not a quick fix, but a long-term way of life. Sue gave us some of her best tips so our listeners could become buff brides or even buff grooms. She said you have to give yourself at least 3 months to get yourself in shape preferably 6 months or more. And please set a realistic goal. If you gained 30 pounds over 10 years you are not going to lose them in 30 days. Sue said her record weight loss for a client was taking her from about 220 pounds down to 145.
