If one of the points of art is to explore all facets of life, then it follows that art must explore the nature of death as well. On this week's show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss three movies that tell stories involving death. The first is “The Shrouds,” David Cronenberg's latest delving into death and dying. The second is “Havoc,” a Netflix crime saga written and directed by Gareth Edwards. And lastly “On Becoming a Guinea Fowl,” an African streaming feature written and directed by the Zambian-Welsh filmmaker Rungano Nyoni.

You should watch the surreal new movie On Becoming a Guinea Fowl. It opens with a Zambian woman finding her uncle's body on the road. His death brings the family together from near and far, but also resurfaces old wounds — wounds the elders would much rather ignore. It's a powerful story about the silence that keeps families from breaking, but only in superficial ways, and with devastating consequences.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

The event was produced in collaboration with Dark Matter Marketing and Picturehouse Entertainment. On Becoming A Guinea Fowl is in cinemas now. The new film from acclaimed, BAFTA-winning director Rungano Nyoni (I Am Not a Witch), ON BECOMING A GUINEA FOWL is a compelling drama about community and sisterhood. Driving home from a party one night, Shula seems unfazed by the sight of her uncle's dead body on the deserted road. While preparations are made for his funeral, she finds herself plunged into the hidden secrets of her family. As tensions rise, Shula and her cousin Nsansa join forces to reconcile the past for a more hopeful future. A fierce and darkly funny portrait of one woman's strength in the face of crisis, Nyoni's award-winning second feature proves her to be a distinctive filmmaker blazing a unique trail. Le cinéma, «la meilleure façon de communiquer» pour la réalisatrice zambienne Rungano Nyoni [4/4]

Reportage Afrique

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2024 3:25

Ep 176: Cannes Film Festival 2024, we review Bird, Megalopolis, The Girl With the Needle, and more This episode of Girls On Film comes from Cannes, where Anna Smith speaks to Jane Crowther and Wendy Mitchell about their Film Festival highlights. Anna hosts the very first Girls On Film party at The Members Club, and speaks to some of the guests about their work at the festival and which films they've enjoyed. First up, Anna takes us through the soundscape of Cannes and walks the red carpet for Emilia Perez. Anna joins the Women in Film and TV yacht party, to hear CEO Katie Bailiff's speech, before heading to MUBI's beach party. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Then Anna invites film journalists Jane Crowther and Wendy Mitchell to discuss the films they've seen in Cannes so far, which include Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Megalopolis, The Girl With the Needle and On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, as well as Andrea Arnold's Bird, Wild Diamond, and feminist comedy horror The Balconettes. Jane talks about her new role as editor-in-chief of Hollywood Authentic, a new luxury, glossy magazine, and Wendy discusses her portfolio of projects including the upcoming Sundance London, and San Sebastian Film Festivals. Wendy and Anna are both on the Palm Dog judging panel for Best Canine on screen, so naturally the conversation turns to the various dogs in films at Cannes. They also discuss the impact of #MeToo and Time's Up, and recent changes at the Cannes Film Festival, including the arrival of signs stating that harassment won't be tolerated. Finally, we join Anna at The Members Club for Girls On Film's own Cannes party. We hear from a few of the guests, who include Akua Gyamfi of The British Blacklist and Dame Heather Rabbats of Time's Up, who talk about the launch of their new initiative around appropriate hair and makeup for diverse requirements on set. Anna also speaks to Nicole Weis of IFC Films, producer and comedienne Ronni Ancona, director Rachel Ramsay, and The Girl With the Needle co-writer Line Langebek Knudsen, and our wonderful supporter, IMDb founder Col Needham. With special thanks to our sponsors for the party, Rebecca Hawkes at Elstree Studios, HLA Agency, Col Needham at IMDb, and JoJo Dye at JJD Consulting. And with gratitude to our lovely partners for this episode, Vanessa Smith and Peter Brewer, for their continuing support of the podcast. You're probably familiar with ducks, hens, and geese, but what is a guinea fowl? It's a black-and-white speckled bird with a tiny head that looks a lot like a turkey's. Guinea fowls are gallinaceous birds, which means they have big meaty bodies and feed off the ground, mostly eating bugs and seeds. They're ideal for domestication because of their eggs and their size.  Full:  Guinea Fowl: Everything You Need to Know

Guinea Fowl (Numida meleagris) are a quirky and one of a kind bird. Not suited to every home - mostly on account of their noise and their roaming habits - if you are lucky enough to have a flock of guinea fowl in your life - you will be much richer for their most amusing habits. The order of birds known as Galliformes is one of the oldest on our planet and they have a rich history interwoven with our own human one. Within the Galliforme family are chickens, pheasants and turkeys and nearly every continent on our planet have a native Galliforme member - one exception being Australia. The Australian continent has no indigenous species of these birds and as such the common African guinea fowl became a popular food source in early human settlement.Birdman Dad keeps a flock of guinea fowl to assist in the management of insects. In years past there has been large numbers of locusts that required some re-balancing and more recently ticks have been the target insect. Admittedly the mornings start early when you have guinea fowl as they come up on the grass to nibble their early morning greens. If you can tolerate the guinea fowl commotion and want to keep some keen insect micro-managers, the guinea fowl may be the bird for you!

The livestock market in Garu Tempane is buzzing with activity as buyers and sellers rush to make a deal before closing time. There are vendors selling chickens and goats but guinea fowl seems to be an especially big draw. This is because in Ghana, guinea fowl is one of the most popular sources of animal protein . The bird is native to West Africa and has long been a part of the region’s cuisine and history. The high nutritional content of guinea fowl makes it an important contribution to a food system that can feed every Ghanaian. Today, demand for guinea fowl is outpacing supply. In order to meet this demand, the World Bank-funded West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program, or WAAPP, is working with farmers in Ghana to increase production. With knowledge and the right equipment, guinea fowl can be a low-maintenance livestock to raise. Yeboah: “Guinea fowl, naturally they are heartier and they can also subsist even on vegetation. As they go around, they pick grains and insects. It is easier to manage them and less expensive to also maintain.” That’s Franklin Yeboah. He’s the assistant director with Ghana’s Ministry of Agriculture and he directs the livestock component of the WAAPP. The program has provided supplies and support to guinea fowl farmers who are just starting out. Yeboah: “We have selected 40 districts in these 3 regions and we’ve selected 2 farmers per district. And each farmer –40 of the farmers have been supported with incubator and generator sets.” “We are also giving eggs – that’s 500 eggs each. We are giving feed, and we also are giving vaccines.” As with all types of farming, there are challenges to raising guinea fowl. Yeboah: “When you take guinea fowls, for instance, hatchability is a problem. It’s very low. You have people hatching maybe 20-30% when they set eggs and they normally use the hens to hatch the eggs. “You also have high mortality because you are not able to maintain the kids. That’s when they have the kids following the hens, you have hawks and other predators also attacking the kids.” But the incubators provided by the WAAPP help the farmers achieve a higher hatchability of eggs. And with training and support, the farmers are able to raise the young guinea fowl to mature levels at which they are no longer threatened by predators. The program has been quite successful, creating jobs in rural Ghana where unemployment is high, particularly for young people. And with the constant demand for guinea fowl, the growth potential of this industry to contribute to the economy and alleviate poverty is strong. Yeboah: “The high level goal is to the reduce poverty and to increase wealth. And also to support animal protein intake.” Beneficiary farmers have experienced a large jump in their incomes, but they’re not the only ones who have profited from the program. Other farmers in the communities have been able to use the incubators for their own eggs. Now that everyone has access to the tools, more and more farmers are able to raise healthy flocks, putting them on the path to productive livelihoods. Yeboah: “It’s a source for raising extra income. Most of the farmers in Ghana do crop farming. And yet, they also do some use of subsistence livestock farming. “Now the livestock serves as a bank of wealth. So whenever they need money to do anything, they sell their animals, raise money and use the money to do whatever they need to do.”

Just when I think everything is chugging along like a "sort of" well oiled machine something comes along and seemingly derails everything. This time the "something" was our Guinea Fowl. In the past you have heard me say all sorts of good things about them: they have a good profit margin, they are great foragers, they do a good job of tick control, and they are generally a hardy bird. From time to time though you have probably heard me talk about how they wander too far, that they won't roost where I want them to, and they can sometimes be a general annoyance. All of the negatives have come to a head in the fact the Guinea Fowl won't stay on my farm and roost where I want them to roost, so they will no longer be a part of our farm. It has been a tough week getting to that point, but now we have most of them caught up and in a wagon with feed and water until they go to the processor (we also already have them marketed). All of that has led to me rethinking my support of beginning farmers like myself raising Guinea Fowl. I'm not saying that it won't work in other cases, that there weren't things that I could have done differently, or that I don't have ideas that I would have liked to try. What I am saying though is for me they didn't work out and because of that I can't recommend them to other farmers. All of that being said, if you are having success raising your Guinea Fowl, keeping them on your farm, and getting them to roost in the spot you want I would love to here your thoughts and share them with others! This past week I posted a "fall farm" picture to the Crooked Gap Farm Facebook page and there was a great question about the style of our pasture pens for the rabbits. Of course this had me thinking about the best way to describe them (video of course ... maybe you have heard about a coming Kickstarter project), but beyond that it got me thinking about the role of the meat rabbits and guinea fowl on the farm. Right now they both are important pieces because the rabbits are they way our son gets involved in the business and the guinea fowl provide sales of course, but there is also the fact that they do a great job eating ticks and bugs! As I thought about it though, if I was starting my small scale farm with the focus of building a sustainable business that does more than just support a hobby I don't think either of those animals would be ones that I would start with. Of course if you are wanting to get a start in town the rabbits would be perfect, and if a family homestead was your goal then you might enjoy the guinea fowl (if they don't annoy you too much). The facts are that with both the guinea fowl and the rabbits there is a huge benefit because your starting costs are rather low, your time to return (as in when you sell the meat) is fairly short, and the learning curve is less steep than cattle. It is also true that in many locations rabbit and guinea fowl meat is probably an untapped market. That can be both a blessing and point of concern. Not that you can't market them, but there will be more work in educating customers on the benefits, cooking methods, and great flavor. As a point of comparison ... even if you are raising pasture based poultry or pork there will always be people willing to take a chance on a whole chicken, bacon, or pork chops. What I'm trying to say is that they have a place on the farm, but if I was starting my farm from scratch again they would be in the long range plans rather than year one or two. Of course all of that being said, if I would have started with meat rabbits in town instead of egg laying chickens the police never would have called asking me to remove my chickens! With that in mind maybe rabbits are the perfect thing to start with if your beginning farmer journey begins in town!
