The funny thing about genres like alt, punk, indie is that there was a point when these things were directly in opposition to something mainstream and corporate, but then somewhere along the way they became styles and aesthetics that could also be mainstream. It's not always clear what it means to be alt-rock or alt-country these days or even how to listen to an album in the streaming age where our music habits are changing so rapidly all the time. On today's show, Tom Knoblauch is in conversation with Julia Steiner, whose band Ratboys just released a new album called The Window, about the always-shifting music landscape, the construction of an album, and how she developed her unique style over the past decade.

Danke – besten Gruß, viel Erfolg bei deinen Verhandlungen & bleib gesund     Links Vanessa Nord Jennifer Roch Ute Gütschow Stefanie Asbe Julia Steiner Stefanie Kunzelnick Linda Salbach Homepage Andreas Schrader LinkedIn Audiobook „Negotiation Matchplan” Twitter Xing Instagram Facebook

This week we had another Chicago-based band join the show which continues to prove the rich music history of the city. Julia Steiner of Ratboys was my guest and she was an absolute blast to converse with. We talked about a wide-range of music topics like how she met bandmate Dave at Notre Dame, they started writing music in their dorm rooms, eventually moving in with Dave & Sean in Chicago & having more time to practice, hitting the road for DIY touring, and eventually getting their first headlining tour after the release of Printer's Devil. Julia Steiner is a storyteller with an incredible flare for folklore-esq songwriting. With care and precision She manages to magnify a particular memory and assign it a myriad of meanings. The stories are sometimes reflections of her own life, other times they’re imagined fantasies about historical figures...but they are always stunning. Her voice spiderwebs through melodies that feel simultaneously novel and nostalgic, echoing influences from folk, country, rock and Americana. Ratboys is a genre enigma, a lyrical adventure and a necessary breath of fresh air.  Listen in as we talk with Julia about her musical journey, songwriting, wiki-races, and the concept of being “post-country.”
