What turns a live event into a cultural moment people never forget? David Jammy has some answers. As Executive Producer at Done+Dusted, he's helped shape global broadcasts from the Emmys and Kennedy Center Honors to the Global Citizen Festival and the Mark Twain Prize. In this conversation, David traces his path from student activist in apartheid-era South Africa to producing events that capture history as it happens. He shares his storytelling philosophy, the challenge of turning fleeting moments into lasting television, and the behind-the-scenes story of the 2025 Mark Twain Prize honoring Conan O'Brien—a night that doubled as both a tribute and an act of resistance. It's a reminder that live events aren't just entertainment. They can be culture's way of recording history in real time. ----- LINKS: Done+Dusted Kelly Clarkson's Cautionary Christmas Music Tale (2013) PBS | Jon Stewart Mark Twain Prize Acceptance Speech Netflix | Conan O'Brien: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor Variety | How Done+Dusted Found the Right Tone for Conan O'Brien's Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize, as Both a Celebration and a Wake: ‘It Was So Cathartic'

The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textWhat makes a song lyric truly unforgettable? Is it the clever wordplay, the raw emotion, or the way it perfectly captures a universal feeling? Jay Franze and Tiffany Mason dive headfirst into this question, sparking a fascinating conversation with their listeners about the lines that have stuck with them through the years. From Garth Brooks' bittersweet reflection that "I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance" to Johnny Cash's chilling confession "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die," country music has always excelled at distilling complex emotions into single, powerful lines. Listeners share their favorites while Jay boldly champions an unconventional choice from songwriter Mike Errico that demonstrates how deeply personal our connections to lyrics can be.The episode weaves through current country music headlines, including John Michael Montgomery's retirement announcement, George Strait's upcoming Kennedy Center Honors, and Lainey Wilson's remarkable journey from living in a camper behind a recording studio to having her own exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame. The hosts break down the latest Billboard country charts, with Tyler Hubbard claiming the top spot and rising stars continuing to make their mark.Things take a relatable turn when Jay and Tiffany share their recent concert experiences – from the frustration of navigating venue accessibility issues to standing in seemingly endless merchandise lines. These stories highlight the dedication of music fans and the sometimes challenging realities of the live music experience.Whether you're drawn to inspirational anthems or gut-punch breakup lines, this episode celebrates the power of songwriting and the special connection between artists and listeners. The voice over business is NOT an easy one to break into, but don't tell that to award-winning VO artist Randy Thomas, who's worked the Academy Awards seven times throughout her career, and is the first person to announce the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys in the same year. Randy is also the first woman ever to announce the Oscars. Her resume is as long as the state of California, including when she made history as the half-time announcer for Super Bowl 44, introducing The WHO. She's been the voice of ABC's Nightline, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Kennedy Center Honors, Democratic Nomination, and more. Please give a warm welcome to Randy Thomas, who joins our show today to talk about her legendary career and sometimes complicated life. Randy grew up listening to NY radio as a kid, and that's exactly where she started her career, on the radio. Needless to say, she's had one of the most successful announcing careers in the business, but as one of the first women, she says it wasn't always easy. And neither was her personal life. Randy's youngest brother was murdered, which turned her family up side down. On top of that, she describes her early years as deeply dysfunctional. She talks about it, and how her career kept her grounded. Today, she continues to work, and is starting her own VO company, too. Unfortunately, she lost her home this year in the Palisades fire, and we'll talk about how she's coping with that, too. Please join #DeborahKobyltLIVE on all video and audio podcast platforms, and invite your friends, too. I'm your host, #DeborahZaraKobylt, and it's my pleasure to welcome you here. #randythomasvo #voiceover #hollywood #oscars

SEASON 4 EPISODE 4: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:45) SPECIAL COMMENT: Hey have fun watching Trump's "listening exercise" with Putin in Alaska today. No, Russia. No, Alaska. I don’t know any more. Listening exercise.” Trump listening to Putin telling him what to do. No crap. This is simple. Trump and Putin will leave this photo-op having agreed on something utterly agreeable to Putin. Like the cease fire Axios reports Trump told European leaders yesterday he really wants. You know what THAT could be: Putin will agree to a cease-fire if Ukraine will stop annoying Putin by defending its territory. Then Trump will claim a victory. Then Ukraine will reject it – although President Zelensky’s real play is to say it is too naïve an idea to even merit a comment, and any child can see that – then Trump will blame Zelensky and say he resolved the war except for the war part. That Zelensky screwed it up. Actually it may be worse. The Times of London headline: “US and Russia ‘propose West Bank-style occupation of Ukraine." Per its source close to the U.S. national security council: "It’ll just be like Israel occupies the West Bank. With a governor, with an economic situation that goes into Russia, not Ukraine. But it’ll still be Ukraine, because … Ukraine will never give up its sovereignty. But the reality is it’ll be occupied territory and the model is Palestine.” THIS IS THE TEST MARKETING OF THE MILITARY DICTATORSHIP: Trump says sure he'll go to Congress to get the use of troops authorized in DC past the 30-day limit. Or he'll just declare a national emergency. He boasts he closed the border and didn't get anybody's permission. He is moving towards the takeover. We are this close to him in the Kim Jong Un hat. THE TRUMPSTEIN COVER-UP CONTINUES: Karoline "Noble Prize" Leavitt explains Trump “wants to see credible evidence released." The part she leaves out is that of course he wants to make sure that this evidence is NOT released. Some of the evidence about Ghislaine Maxwell's transfer has been revealed and somebody tampered with her prisoner status and she may now be free to leave Club Fed during the day. AND JUST WHEN YOU THOUGHT Marjorie Taylor Greene wasn't the dumbest of them all - oh yes she is. B-Block (34:03) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: CNN's Kasie Hunt says sure crime is down by a quarter in DC but does it FEEL like it's down? Andrew Cuomo finds another opponent he can beat: Muhammad Ali's most famous quote. And if OK! Magazine has the story right, Jeff Bezos has found the next Bond Girl: MRS. Jeff Bezos, Lauren Sanchez. C-Block (56:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Missed the anniversary by twelve days but it's always in the back of my mind anyway. Literally one month into my career and only the seventh time my bosses trusted me enough to leave me alone on a sportscasting shift at our 1,000-station radio network, Thurman Munson - catcher and captain of the New York Yankees - was killed when the plane he was still learning how to fly crashed at an Ohio airport. And the news came across my wire one minute before my sportscast.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's Headlines: Trump turned what should've been a straightforward Kennedy Center honoree reveal — shoutout to Sylvester Stallone, Gloria Gaynor, KISS, and Michael Crawford — into another marathon rant. He floated extending National Guard deployments in DC, promised to clear homeless encampments without saying where people will go, and unveiled a pricey 600-troop “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force” for nationwide protest crackdowns. Down in Texas, Republicans rammed through a gerrymandered congressional map after Trump demanded a special session, while Democrats are still hiding out of state. On the foreign front, Trump is gearing up for his Putin meet-and-greet at an Anchorage military base, warning of “severe consequences” if there's no Ukraine ceasefire. Norway is blaming Russian hackers for sabotaging a dam in April. Trump also nominated former Fox News face Tammy Bruce as deputy ambassador to the UN — even though both the deputy and main gig are currently empty. Oh, and Mexico just extradited 26 alleged cartel bosses after Trump's tariff threats, with the DOJ promising no death penalties. Resources/Articles mentioned in this episode: AP News: Trump names Stallone and Kiss for Kennedy Center Honors and says he'll host the awards show NBC News: Trump says he will seek 'long-term extension' of Washington police takeover Axios: "Unheard of and ominous": Trump's D.C. homelessness crackdown perplexes advocates WaPo: Pentagon plan would create National Guard ‘reaction force' for civil unrest Texas Tribune: Texas Senate approves new congressional lines as House Democrats remain out of state WSJ: Trump Agrees on Ukraine Red Lines With Europe Before Putin Summit AP News: Norwegian police say pro-Russian hackers were likely behind suspected sabotage at a dam CBS News: Trump nominates Tammy Bruce as deputy representative to the U.N. John Talks about Trump exerting control over the Kennedy Center Honors and vetoing prospective ‘wokester' honorees. He also talks about Trump's big D.C. makeover and takeover with National guard troops guarding absolutely nothing, and the White House conducting a comprehensive internal review of exhibits and materials at the Smithsonian Institution in an effort to comply with Trump's directive about what should and shouldn't be displayed. Then, he jokes with podcast star Bob Cesca about the DC takeover, the nominee to take over BLS, and Donald targeting the Smithsonian. Next, the God Squad is back - this time featuring Keith Giles and Dillion Cruz. They discuss the Viral CNN Segment that highlights disturbing Christian movements. And finally, John chats with legal analyst Dr. Tracy Pearson and they answer listener questions about Trump and his legal woes.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
