We may hate to admit it, but we all have some bad habit. It can be challenging and frustrating to try and break those habits whether it is stress eating, too much screen time, negative self-talk, smoking, drinking, eating fast food, too much TV, the list goes on. In order to break the bad habits, we need to learn to what we are craving and what may be the deep motive behind it. A very effective way to break a bad habit can be to replace it with a healthy and rewarding habit, change your environment, believe you can change,  utilize a habit tracker, and/or find an accountability partner or coach (like me;)). In this episode, I chat with you behind the meaning behind why you may be still doing the bad habits and the 4 laws to break a habit. I definitely recommend checking out the book, "Atomic Habits," by James Clear to dive deeper into habit formation.My fave tips for replacing it with healthy hard habits:1. It wasn't until Mollie went through a period of insomnia that she knew something needed to change. After learning about chronobiology, circadian rhythm optimization, structuring the day, and how it could make a difference with her sleep, it absolutely changed the course that Mollie was on. After learning all this cool stuff about sleep, it's all that Mollie could talk about. So, she organically started helping people that were struggling with their sleep. [06:30] What To Do If You Are Currently Taking A Sleep Medication There are so many elements that can certainly impact our sleep results. Environmental is one of the most significant changes that we can make. We need to learn about the management of our environment from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. You can train your circadian rhythm and strengthen it. When you train your circadian rhythm, you will be able to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Consistency is critical for overall sleep hygiene. [12:00] How Sleep Plays A Role In Your Weight Loss Journey If you're not sleeping well, glucose levels are oscillating at a higher level. Hight glucose levels will make it more challenging to resist temptations throughout the day when we're running on that period of even acute sleep deprivation. When you throw off the time you go to sleep and the time you wake up, then you are throwing off your fasting windows and your feeding windows. When we start having inconsistent timing of when we're eating, then that can throw off a confusing series of triggers to the body. Also, we won't be getting enough recovery time if we aren't sleeping well. [18:00] Getting Better Sleep Will Help You Focus And Improve Cognitive Performance Glymphatic drainage happens in the brain from the first part of your night. It cleans out cellular waste from the day. Getting enough sleep will possibly help battle Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. If you ever have a great night of sleep, you most likely wake up excited and ready to tackle the day. This is a feeling you can reproduce night after night. Sleep is great for productivity. It's a hack that even poker players use. [20:50] Practical Sleep Tips You Can Start To Utilize Today Look at what is not helping with your sleep hygiene. Some people tend to be very busy and stressed throughout their day. Adding on a business partner or virtual assistant can help lighten your workload and reduce stress. If you are suffering from insomnia, find some cognitive behavioral therapy near you. Is your anxiety keeping you awake? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) might be right for you. [32:00] Should You Get Extra Sleep After A Night Out Or Wake Up At Your Normal Time? Mollie suggests waking up at the same time that you normally would. Luckily, there is a buffer of about thirty minutes that you can sleep extra. If you sleep for too long after your normal wakeup time, you will be disrupting your circadian rhythm and disrupting your sleep for that following night and nights after. Train your circadian rhythm and keep it strong. [33:50] The General Optimal Timeframe To Get Deep Sleep And REM Sleep There's a variance between different people and different timing for their sleep. People who work the graveyard shift, unfortunately, may have long-term health problems. The World Health Organization sees staying up all night as a possible carcinogenic. They joked that he was doing bizarre things in the living room. Their dad was experimenting and open to ways that affect his biology, health, and longevity. He would utilize vibration plates and infrared saunas way before they became popular. Eventually, they started paying attention to their own bodies and started to notice what biohacks work best with their bodies. “Now I'm 34, and I feel better now than I did when I was 24.” -Renee   [10:15] Renee and Lauren Give Their Definitions of Biohacking The definition of biohacking changes all of the time. In fact, there's a lot of misconceptions about biohacking. However, biohacking is more for women than men because women are more complex. Biohacking is disrupting a pattern. It also is anything that helps you control your biology. Plus, biohacking can come from two different directions. You can biohack your way out of an illness, or you biohack your way into a thriving lifespan. Biohacking will optimize the aging process. [15:00] Why Stabilizing Blood Sugar Levels Is Important For Losing Weight We have stressors coming at us left and right, not just from food but from emotional stuff and environmental stuff. Renee and Lauren have both really gotten into the blood glucose testing because it is a huge variable that's overlooked. We are designed to be fat-burning machines and go extended periods of time without food. Just like you need exercise recovery, you need recovery from eating. Blood sugar is a sign that there's inflammation in the body. Nothing in the body will be in balance if there is inflammation. When we have too much glucose, we end up storing more fat that we end up burning. [17:20] All About Increasing Thermogenesis In The Body We rarely experience extreme temperatures. When we hit cold temperatures, it helps us to tap into the fat to actually burn. Shivering and cold plunges can increase your thermogenesis – your ability to burn fat to keep you warm. Green tea extract is a supplement that can also help increase your thermogenesis. Humans had to learn how to survive in thirty-degree weather. If we use these genes to our benefit, we can become fat-burning machines. [19:00] How To Support Fatty Acid Metabolism & Why It's Critical A lot of people have mitochondrial dysfunction. Sadly, our mitochondria are under attack. With mitochondrial dysfunction, you're not able to burn fat the way that we're designed to. Renee likes to use creatine and amino acids to help increase lean muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the easier it is to burn fat when you're just sitting around. [29:45] Some of The Best Ways That You Can Reduce Belly Fat To reduce belly fat, you have to remove inflammation. One way to reduce inflammation is by cutting out industrial seed oils. You really have to pull back on all of these chronic stressors. Once you have reduced the stress, then you can get in there, move things around, and make some changes. If you're skipping the fundamentals, then no biohack is going to work. [31:20] Why Poor Vagal Tone Will Lead To Brain Fog Vagal tone is a measure of cardiovascular function that facilitates adaptive responses to environmental challenges. If you are in sympathetic overdrive all day, you will suffer from brain fog. A lot of people don't realize they're in this sympathetic state all day. Our bodies aren't meant to be in that state all the time. It's our fight or flight mode - all the blood goes to our arms or legs, so we can run or fight. To support the vagal tone, you can gargle, hum, or sing. [36:50] Neural Inflammation Can Also Be Causing Your Brain Fog Chronic inflammation throughout the entire body is aging us; it's making us feel sick, tired, and fat. Our brain can be inflamed as well as other parts of our body. If your brain is inflamed, your gut is inflamed. Plus, you will have brain fog. So, target inflammation from a whole-body perspective. For instance, people would be in the ICU due to an urgent amputation because of uncontrolled diabetes. At the ICU, Kara would see really severe problems that could have been prevented in the first place. So, Kara wanted to catch these issues way earlier in a way that was meaningful. After discovering CGMs, Kara realized how powerful of a tool they are for multiple reasons: They give us continuous insight into our metabolic health. CGMs are motivating for people. Lastly, the data you receive is personalized and actually works!   [06:35] What You Need To Know Before Getting A CGM The CGM is a small device, about the size of a quarter. It's a medical device, so you need a prescription in order to receive it from your doctor. Sadly, they're most likely not going to do it unless you're a diabetic case. If you're generally a healthy person who wants to stay healthy, the chances of your doctor writing you a prescription is slim to none. The device goes on the back of the arm, you push the button, and it's in there. It uses a needle for insertion. The needle is removed, and the only thing that's left below the surface of your skin is a flexible microfilament. The devices are factory calibrated, so there's no blood needing to be drawn. [10:45] What Should Your Blood Glucose Levels Be? When you're thinking about fasting glucose, Kara recommends 70 to 90 range milligrams per deciliter. If you Google, “what's a healthy fasting glucose level?” It will probably tell you 70 to 100. There is research that indicates when we get to that 90 to 100 range, we're starting to see some increased risks. Shoot for 70 – 90 most of the time. After a meal, we want to see it returned back to baseline values, usually in that two-hour mark. Check how high your levels went after you ate – aim for 140 or less. On a keto diet, it shouldn't go above 120. [15:00] Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses And Non-Insulin Mediated Glucose Responses After Exercise Our glucose can spike, and our body can deal with that glucose spike without utilizing insulin. The spike we get from exercise happens after a very high-intensity workout, or you're doing something rather strenuous. It makes sense that you're going to have a glucose spike because your current supply of energy in the body is not enough to meet the demands that you're placing it under. With exercise, we're simulating stress hormones, but we're also breaking down glycogen stores. The exercise is demanding energy, and it's getting used right away. The reason your body is stimulating a glucose response with high-intensity exercise is that it needs it. [20:35] When You Are Chronically Sleep Deprived, You Will Have Higher Levels of Cortisol The Next Morning When we think about optimizing glucose values, we always talk about diet, exercise, stress, and sleep; they're equal components of the picture. Sleep is something we really have to pay attention to. Poor glucose levels will affect the quality of your sleep. Also, a bad night of sleep is definitely going to affect your glucose values the next day. [24:30] What Happens When You Break A Fast With A High Carbohydrate Meal There's a lot of psychology that goes on with fasting – people will have a cheat meal after fasting. When you do that, you ruin most of the benefits. If you break a fast with carbs, you can see glucose levels higher than they've ever been for two days straight. Eating carbs after a fast is not a good strategy. Instead, break a fast with protein. The longer the fast, the stricter you want to be. [26:40] Why You Should Go For A Walk After You Eat A Meal   Walking after a meal can really dramatically stabilize glucose values. Most of our circulating glucose in the system is going to get picked up by the skeletal muscle. Gently stimulating your muscles and moving can make a really big difference. Walking is also good for mental health and stress reduction. [28:30] Other Biohacks You Can Do To Decrease Glucose Levels Cold and heat exposure work in different ways. Both will lower glucose over time. Cold therapy will stimulate brown fat. When you're hot and sweating a lot, that might cause the glucose to be elevated during the sauna session, but it should lower glucose values overall later in the day. The benefits we get from exercising can be duplicated when we also are doing sauna therapy. In addition, berberine is the most beneficial supplement for lowering glucose values. Plus, apple cider vinegar will help lower glucose values. Try a little bit of vinegar with water before a meal. You can also drizzle it on a salad. [33:30] The Dawn Phenomenon: What You Can Do About It You're going to potentially see a little bit of a glucose bump in the early morning hours. For most people, that occurs between about 4 to 8 am. It's your body's natural alarm clock. For some people, when they first wake up, glucose levels are highest in the day. There is no evidence to suggest that this glucose bump is a bad thing. She did not feel free to be herself or think the way she wanted to think and express that fully. At the moment, Dr. Jensen was crying and crying. Earlier in the day, Dr. Jensen's mother had read her journal. Sadly, Dr. Jensen started to recognize that nothing was hers. Her mind, her body, and her thoughts were not hers. Jensen found a safety pin and carved “I hate life” into her arm. All of a sudden, something shifted; Dr. Jensen realized that she didn't need to be a victim. Around 18 to 19 weeks, the auditory system is there and is trying to figure out what the world will be like when we're outside of the womb. Plus, we're getting information from all the hormones that our mother is secreting. Our brains are all developed for survival. If we don't fit into the tribe that we're moving into, it will be really hard to survive. The brain and the body are so smart that they're going to mold themselves to fit in. Our womb and our uterus is a space that's supposed to be for creativity, for abundance. However, with past trauma, our bodies can suffer. Your reactions today are really from a subconscious imprint from before. [12:30] The Reasons We Create Stories & How To Create Stories That Will Better Serve You There are different reasons why we create stories. We create a story in the womb to help us survive the environment we're going in. Stories are beautiful; they hold tradition and culture. Plus, stories can be amazing learning opportunities. Also, stories are influencing how we navigate our world, what we believe about ourselves, and the lens that we put on when we perceive the world around us. When we're trapped in the story that we've created to survive, we're not really connected to our own center and our own soul's story. [16:25] The Tools That Dr. Jensen Loves To Use & How You Can Apply These Tools Today Yoga and meditation for Dr. Jensen was a lifesaver. Yoga doesn't have to be buying a yoga mat and doing a yoga class. Instead, yoga could be connecting with nature, it could be cooking a meal, and feeling completely connected with yourself. Physical yoga creates these movements in our body that we don't normally do. Plus, it creates this awakening and certain nerve endings and connections between organs and our breath. It starts to repattern our brain to think differently. Often, we're stuck in our mind, and we're operating from our mind. However, yoga can bring you back to your heart. [21:45] The Most Common Symptom That Women Deal With On A Daily Basis The most common symptom that Dr. Jensen treats is anxiety. There's usually an event that's created that anxiety, there is perception, there's a belief, and then that turns into deficiencies in our hormones. When a woman has anxiety, her gut system is also not working as well. Women need to understand where the anxiety is coming from and that it's not who she is. When we're thriving off of that stress, the anxieties show up, the gut issues show up, the inability to be very intimate shows up. [27:20] The Most Significant Lesson That Dr. Jensen Learned From Writing Her First Book The healing never stops. There is always another layer to your healing journey. Also, there is never one answer for all of us. Lastly, healing is a journey, and we don't have to get there right away. [29:35] How To Navigate Keto So You Can Have A Healthier Monthly Cycle Variation is key if you have a heavy menstrual cycle. For the first two weeks of your cycle, you can go heavy with keto. It wasn't until Mollie went through a period of insomnia that she knew something needed to change. After learning about chronobiology, circadian rhythm optimization, structuring the day, and how it could make a difference with her sleep, it absolutely changed the course that Mollie was on. [06:30] What To Do If You Are Currently Taking A Sleep Medication There are so many elements that can certainly impact our sleep results. Environmental is one of the most significant changes that we can make. We need to learn about the management of our environment from the moment we wake up until we go to bed. You can train your circadian rhythm and strengthen it. When you train your circadian rhythm, you will be able to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Consistency is critical for overall sleep hygiene. [12:00] How Sleep Plays A Role In Your Weight Loss Journey If you're not sleeping well, glucose levels are oscillating at a higher level. Hight glucose levels will make it more challenging to resist temptations throughout the day when we're running on that period of even acute sleep deprivation. When you throw off the time you go to sleep and the time you wake up, then you are throwing off your fasting windows and your feeding windows. When we start having inconsistent timing of when we're eating, then that can throw off a confusing series of triggers to the body. Also, we won't be getting enough recovery time if we aren't sleeping well. [18:00] Getting Better Sleep Will Help You Focus And Improve Cognitive Performance Glymphatic drainage happens in the brain from the first part of your night. It cleans out cellular waste from the day. Getting enough sleep will possibly help battle Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. If you ever have a great night of sleep, you most likely wake up excited and ready to tackle the day. This is a feeling you can reproduce night after night. Sleep is great for productivity. It's a hack that even poker players use. [20:50] Practical Sleep Tips You Can Start To Utilize Today Look at what is not helping with your sleep hygiene. Some people tend to be very busy and stressed throughout their day. Adding on a business partner or virtual assistant can help lighten your workload and reduce stress. If you are suffering from insomnia, find some cognitive behavioral therapy near you. Is your anxiety keeping you awake? Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) might be right for you. [32:00] Should You Get Extra Sleep After A Night Out Or Wake Up At Your Normal Time? Mollie suggests waking up at the same time that you normally would. Luckily, there is a buffer of about thirty minutes that you can sleep extra. If you sleep for too long after your normal wakeup time, you will be disrupting your circadian rhythm and disrupting your sleep for that following night and nights after. Train your circadian rhythm and keep it strong. [33:50] The General Optimal Timeframe To Get Deep Sleep And REM Sleep There's a variance between different people and different timing for their sleep. People who work the graveyard shift, unfortunately, may have long-term health problems. The World Health Organization sees staying up all night as a possible carcinogenic. On John's health journey, he explored vegetarian diets and vegan diets. In fact, he was vegan for almost seven years. One day, John found peace and realized that the only thing you need is to love. It made him double down on the practice of wellness, health, and vitality. The concept of health is so important and so fascinating that John is still passionate about it after all these years. The health space is a great place to be right now because a lot of people are waking up to it finally. [12:00] How To Use A Foam Roller And Lacrosse Ball Properly Hamstrings usually get very tight. So, put the lacrosse ball on a hard chair under the most tender points of the hamstring, and let your muscles sink into it. As you sink into it the ball, you're basically pinning that trigger point. Also, you will be alleviating the calcium deposit. Sawing away at a foam roller is not the best approach. Instead, use the pin and shear method on your foam roller. Using a foam roller or lacrosse ball is better after a workout rather than before. [20:50] Why John Wanted To Write A Book About Covid Honestly, John didn't want to write a book about Covid. However, the book is what we need because of Covid. When John says Rewilding Covid, it means taking your health into your own hands. Rewilding means tuning ourselves back into the wild aspect of what makes us a real human. Plus, it means that you're mimicking basically what our ancestors did naturally. For John, being wild means having freedom. Ideally, we will all wind up being in control of our spirit. “We are wild humans at heart.” -John Schott [31:40] The Power of Human Adaptability During Covid The one thing that we can control is how we interact with our environment and how we adapt. One of the most fascinating things about humans is our ability to adapt. As our environments change, we have to change with the environment. We need to help our body become more resilient, stronger, and better. Even if there is a virus in our environment, we know how to make changes and adapt. [38:55] What Is Grounding And Can It Improve Health? The beautiful thing about grounding is that it's free. We have generations and ancestral templates of being connected to the magnetic frequency of the Earth. The Earth has a pulse and a magnetic frequency that's anti-inflammatory, restorative, and rejuvenating. With grounding, your body can breathe, and your cells can breathe. For ten minutes each day, take your shoes off and put your feet on the bare ground. When grounding, you will feel less stress. [43:15] John Gives Tips On How You Can Become More Resilient Weave in movement throughout the day, as much as you can; it is very critical for overall health. John says that walking is very underrated. Going for long walks is extremely healthy, and it is restorative. Sometimes, what you need is more restoration. If you sit for long periods of time, stand up every thirty minutes and shake it out. Once that body starts feeling strong and good, it affects the way you think. When people have clogged limbs, and they're not able to detoxify properly. So, get moving! [45:20] The Importance of Proper Breathing For Overall Health Oxygen is life! Most of the time, people have cold hands and feet because they are not getting proper oxygen to the extremities. Sometimes, reproduction, libido, and the drive that we have for life will get challenged because of the lack of oxygenation. The way we breathe and what we're breathing is fundamental. Do deep diaphragmatic breathing through your nose – never through the mouth. Get good quality plants to help oxygenate the air. AND MUCH MORE!
