Kev is joined as always by The Lutonian journalist James Cunliffe to look ahead to a tricky contest against an inconsistent Boro side. The boys express their bafflement at the opposition when looking at them through the guise of the numbers and pick out one or two threats the home side could carry. The attention then turns to the Hatters and where the changes that Rob Edwards promised after the Cardiff win could come. Will he make wholesale changes or just tweaks? Listen to find out the lads' thoughts on that, their score predictions and more on the latest episode of your award-nominated, longest running Luton Town podcast. Brian Dillon, one part of Meltybrains, released his second solo album under the moniker The Line on November 1, 2023. Entitled Red Blood Cells and Righteousness, it's an album full of collaborations, featuring Lullahush, Fehdah and Loah, Sarah Corcoran (Pillow Queens), Sorcha Richardson, Talos, God Knows and Murli, and lots more. On this episode, we talk through all the tracks on the album and discuss the making of it. Brian says: “This is an album built on personal relationships and communication, dedicated to playing a small but significant role as a part of a world so much bigger than any of us are willing to admit. After all, maybe we're all just blood cells, swimming through the veins of the earth, serving a much higher function.” On January 25 at The Horse Gallery, Dorset Street, Dublin, the exhibition White Blood Cells is opening, a sister piece to the album. A series of immersive soundscapes by Brian Dillon in collaboration with photographer Mark McGuinness. The audio-visual work explores the role and effect of supply chains in today's global world. From the press release: One of the key topics highlighted by the audio work is immigration and refuge. In 2024 global migration is taking place on a level never seen before. The work explores the West's reluctance to give shelter to people who have been driven from their homes due to economic factors which are heavily influenced by western consumer demands. If Dillon's soundscapes pose questions for the future of society, industry, and migration, McGuinness' images act as accompanying notes on our present. The images are all taken from the ongoing project, I Hope I'm Wrong, which documents the impact human activity is having on the environment. All of the images are taken in locations in Ireland which are predicted to be heavily impacted by sea level rise within the next decade. A live performance will take place on the opening night by a music group made up of migrants and asylum seekers. They will perform a short set of songs from their home countries at 6pm, Thursday 25th January 2024. Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend. During the course of my podcast interviews, I keep coming across the notion that composers have a “unique voice”. Indeed this is true of any artist  In episode one Stephen Warbeck talks about your creative voice being a part of your personality that shines through in your music. Stephen tells the the story of director Phillip Kaufman requesting “music as mad as you are” of Stephen In episode 2 Todd Baker talks about his days at college where he felt that certain students had a very distinct creative voice early on. He on the other hand, spent his college years perfecting the technical side of writing, producing and mixing and then went on to develop his unique voice. Can You Ever Have a Truly Original Creative Voice?    Some people may question whether or not you can ever create a piece of music that is truly unique. After all there are only so many notes and so many combinations of those notes. Creative coach Mark McGuinness believes that the art which we consume throughout our lives will go a long way to influencing how we create. But everyone's influences will be different and it's actually the nuances between those influences and the way that we draw on them or combine them that ultimately creates something unique.  Is that unique combination of influences our creative voice? There is a great quote from DeadMau5: “every music producer copies, good producers copy in new ways”  Finding vs Hearing Your Creative Voice   Creative coach Peleg Top introduced me to an interesting distinction.  “You don't find your creative voice, you hear it.” This really resonated with me because it reframes your creative voice as something that it is already within you rather than being something that you have lost or need to find.  It's intrinsic rather than extrinsic.   So now instead of looking for my creative voice and I'm listening for it. But in listening for my creative voice the tendency is to listen to the end product. Trying to identify subtle nuances that define my voice but I wonder whether that is flawed.  I wonder whether hearing your creative voices is less about the final product and more about the way we approach being creative in the first place.  In episiode three Isobel Waller-Bridge reveals that she is rarely thinking of how the musical will sound in the end but rather what's her emotional staring point? Creating from the Heart vs Creating from the Head   I have always said that writing music, whether it be for tv and film or commercial release is about eliciting emotion in the listener.  The more emotion that we can draw on when writing, the more likely that music is to move someone emotionally.  Look at Adele. Every album she releases goes to number 1. Aside from the fact that she has an incredible voice, what is it about her music that captivates listeners around the world? I believe that when she writes and performs she channels so  much emotion into her songs that it moves people on a different level. Sure we can create intellectually and this is a very valuable skill but if that is combined with writing emotionally, then maybe that's where we find the magic.

He explains that one doesn't have to be a full-time poet to write poetry, and details the two main ways poets come up with their ideas. He is also someone I've had the pleasure of calling a colleague and friend for nearly a decade. When Mark told me about his latest project, a new podcast titled A Mouthful of Air, I knew I had to bring him on DIY MFA Radio to talk about it. The podcast centers around poetry, and episodes alternate in focus between contemporary works and the classics. For episodes featuring contemporary poets, Mark invites them to read a single poem and talk about the writing process behind it. In other episodes, he reads classic poems and talks about what we can learn from them as writers. This is an awesome podcast, and one that writers of all genres can learn from and enjoy. A Mouthful of Air has been awarded funding for the first 2 years of the show by Arts Council England, and I can't wait to see where it goes!   In this episode Mark McGuinness and I discuss: What effects a good poem can have on the reader that transcend academic understanding. What method poetry is and the writing processes of contemporary poets. How reading poetry out loud—even just to yourself—enhances the experience.   Plus, his #1 tip for writers. Brainstorming. We've talked about it here on the podcast before. Regular listeners will likely remember that I'm not a big fan. However, today I want to share insights on brainstorming from someone besides me. Mark McGuinness is a fellow author and podcaster. He recently put out an article called “Is Brainstorming A Waste of Time?” In this episode, I discuss this article and share the case for and against brainstorming. No matter where your opinion on this method lies, I encourage you to listen to the end to hear both sides of the argument. Mark's insights are very helpful as we explore what role brainstorming plays in innovation. In this episode you'll hear: Mark's balanced view on brainstorming. The benefits of brainstorming. How brainstorming gives everyone a voice and a chance to air out their thoughts. The four rules of brainstorming. The problems with brainstorming. The dangers of inhibition and groupthink. Why we should compare brainstorming with other techniques of innovation to decide which one to use. Welcome to Episode 54 - How Mark McGuinness WritesSo before we kick off this week's episode, I want to give a quick update on HappyWriter. This last week, if you attended my live workshop on how to 3x your writing output in 2021, you'll know I introduced the evolution of HappyWriter. Like any new project, we've been building and listening and seeing what works and what needs to be tweaked. So, I have a couple changes that I want to quickly announce.First one is that HappyWriter is now entirely focused on helping fiction writers get their book finished. Everything we build and offer is in the service of that goal. To do that, we are launching our core curriculum, which is a nine-part class on how to build a monster writing process to guarantee you get your book done. The second big change is we now have writing workshops for every single member to exchange work with similar genre and experience level writers. You can get feedback on your work, make some writing friends, and build accountability. The last change is that we are only offering membership to HappyWriter on a yearly-basis. Why? We want to build a community of writers who are obsessed with getting books finished and published, and knowing we'll all be able to learn and grow together for a year is awesome. It builds community and relationships, and in a way, signing up for a year is a commitment to getting your book done.Of course, we still have all of the online courses and live events and author masterclasses and community and live coaching calls. I am so insanely proud. HappyWriter is what I wish I had as I learned to write and before I went to get my MFA.So, if you want to get a book done, HappyWriter is the place for you. Full stop. To join, head on over to HowWritersWrite.com.Okay, episode 54 with Mark McGuinness. Interviewing Mark felt like interviewing a creative sage. Mark is a creativity coach for artists and performers, but he is also a poet. This is a guy who really understands what it takes to use our creativity, and I think you'll find Mark answers my questions is such unpredictable and powerful ways. Mark is a gracious guest and I kid you not this interview went by in a snap for me. I'm sure you'll enjoy it as well.Thank you again to Mark for his time. Today I talk with Mark McGuiness who hosts the 21st Century Creative Podcast, where he interviews creatives and entrepreneurs of all types, because in this day and age, “there's a lot more opportunity for creatives and a lot fewer excuses for playing small.” Mark's also a poet who finds that poetry helps him relate to the creative struggles his clients face. I have known Mark for the better part of ten years and at one point, he was my creative coach. He has authored several books, including 21 Insights for 21st Century Creatives and Productivity for Creative People.  Mark has always wanted to find out a way to make a living helping others, first through hypnotherapy, and then through coaching creatives, years before the idea of a “life coach” was even heard of.  He now coaches entrepreneurs in creative industries who are well into their careers and are looking to further develop their potential. Rather than holding his clients accountable, Mark explains, he makes a space for them and encourages them to enlarge their perspective, and most of all, helps them break through the wall of fear.  Mark believes there is more than one way to grow as both an entrepreneur and a creative and has found that working with a specific type of client, rather than trying to scale up his business, has worked well for him. Mark also talks about the intimacy of podcasting and the importance of listening to feedback to make a podcast that the creatives who listen to him can respect and appreciate.  Now let's get better together. Actions to Try or Advice to Take In order to sustain a business, you need to love your work. The best way to grow a business might not be the same for everyone.  Stop trying to play by the old rules. There are more opportunities than ever to build a successful creative career.  One thing McGuinness tells his clients is that some people might have slow, gradual breakthroughs, while for others it might be quick and intense. There's no right way to grow as a creative. Have you ever been told you need to be more present? Or that you're too focused on the past? The past can carry positive emotions but for many artists, it can carry its baggage as well. It is through the lens of these negative emotions that we then begin to project what the future holds for us. This is bad because it makes us worry and stress, all the while taking us away from the present moment. The present, as many leaders, gurus and so on have stated, is all we have and where we must put our energy. In today's lesson, I (Phil Svitek) will examine the effects of so-called time traveling has on our minds and bodies which is way more severe than you might think. More importantly though, I'll provide solutions to stay more present and create the future you want. I'll cite people such as Dr. Gabor Mate, Dr. Joe Dispenza (author of Breaking the Habit and Becoming Supernatural), Alice Miller (author of The Body Never Lies) and creative coach Mark McGuinness. Plus, the simplest advice will come from Star Wars: The Last Jedi. (Can you guess what it might be???) I'm excited to see the results you'll have once you start applying some of these very simple techniques. Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.” That is also the viewpoint of poet and creative coach Mark McGuinness. The 21st century has so much to offer artists so long as they stay the course and don't get distracted. In today's episode, I (Phil Svitek) interview Mark about the challenges facing all 21st century creatives and how to overcome them. Mark is someone whose podcast (The 21st Century Creative) was recommended to me and since the first episode I listened to, I became hooked. He works with many top artists around the world, helping them overcome creative challenges. Together, we dive deep into philosophical and practical ideas that anyone can benefit from. I suggest you listen because as Mark says, “we as creatives put our heart and our soul into our work and so sometimes, we need to work on our heart and our soul.” Throughout our conversation we cite quotes from Charles Darwin, Steven Pressfield and even ancient texts. You'll learn how to keep pushing through and completing your project even once you've hit a wall with it - a situation I was finding myself in with my book. Mark will even recommend great poetry to immerse yourself in. Plus so much more. Oh, so, so, SO much more. In this conversation, we'll talk about: Click here to be creative: How to use mantras, chakras, – and other sometimes thought of as "woo" things – as like graphical user interfaces for altering your mental state. How the feeling > action > response loop can guide your creative direction: If you're wondering how to create work that really moves people, this is the key. How to use impostor syndrome to your advantage. It's a double-edged sword, or a sushi knife, as you'll see. Use it carefully. Mark also mentioned his 20 Creative Blocks list and ebook in the conversation.     Sponsors https://ce.uci.edu/ Show notes: http://kadavy.net/blog/posts/mark-mcguinness-podcast/

Ep#63: This week we're showcasing the session "Productivity for Authors: How to Write and Publish Often And Well: Mark McGuinness." If you struggle to find time for your writing and publishing amid the demands and distractions of 21st century life, this session is for you! Mark will help you carve out time consistently, while still managing all the other important commitments in your life. Topics Covered in this Fringe Highlight Session: How to organize and prioritize your writing time. Laying a creative foundation. Setting your writing priorities. Avoid procrastination that is hindering your writing output. Placing value on your writing time. Freeing up your brain to write. Mark Says: For me it was an immense frustration that there I really wasn’t organized enough and the technology was going faster than my organizational skills. I was spending a lot of time on the hamster wheel of trying to catch up with email and phone calls and this was even before Twitter and Facebook and all of that. It just felt that my day was not in my own control, that I was spending all my time kind of chasing my tail. And I wasn’t getting the most important work done. Which for me has always been writing. And no surprise to see that I started, as soon as I started investigating this, looking into time management, productivity systems, I noticed a lot of my clients coming up with the same issues and the same frustration that, you know, we go into this profession because we love to write and yet if we’re not careful, writing can be the thing that gets pushed off the schedule by all of the other stuff that’s supposed to be an accessory to writing. Our weekly Self-Publishing Advicebroadcast is brought to you by ALLi, the Alliance of Independent Authors. This Indie Author Fringe Highlight  is one of four regular shows, which include an ALLi Member Q&A, a beginners' salon and an advanced self-publishing salon. Find more author advice, tips and tools at our self-publishing advice center, www.selfpublishingadvice.org. And, if you haven’t already, we invite you to join our organization and become a self-publishing ally. You can do that at www.allianceindependentauthors.org.   If you're not familiar with our Fringe event, it's three-times a year, online conference for self-publishing authors, brought to you by the Alliance of Independent Authors (ALLi), and fringe to the major global publishing fairs; London Book Fair, BookExp, and Frankfurt Book Fair. ALLi brings together the most up-to-date self-publishing education and information available and broadcasts it to authors everywhere. Running 24 sessions over 24 continuous hours allows our members, and other authors round the globe, to attend sessions, no matter where they’re located. If you struggle with productivity, this episode is for you. First of all, you’re not alone. Productivity is a big challenge for creative professionals. Working from home means that you’re exposed to a ridiculous number of distractions. And when you’re in front of a computer all day long, the temptation to check email, social media or crazy cat videos can be paralyzing. Yet if we’re ever going to do great work, we have to be productive. We know that intellectually. Making it work on a day-by-day and minute-by-minute basis, however, is challenging. So as we kick off the New Year, I wanted to bring in my friend and colleague Mark McGuinness to the show. Mark has a number of very practical and tactical tips for improving your productivity very quickly...
