Hello, Kaiju Lovers! “Ameri-kaiju” jumps ahead 50 years, but as you'll hear, the (in)famous Cloverfield has a lot in common with the classic 1950s films we've been covering. Nate's longtime friend Nick Hayden drops by to discuss this movie because he's loved it ever since he first experienced it in a theater—and it is an experience. Too much of one for some people, in fact! While it's popular to hate on Cloverfield in the kaiju fandom, it popularized the “found footage” genre and launched J.J. Abrams' studio, Bad Robot Productions. To the shock of some of Nate's friends, he says this is the closest the United States has come to producing a Godzilla (1954). How and why? Hello, kaiju lovers! By popular (and Godzilla's) demand, MIFV is starting a new series on episodes on the Godzilla franchise called “Godzilla Redux”! It starts with the one that started it all, the 1954 classic Godzilla (aka Gojira) starring Akira Takarada, Akihiko Hirata, and Takeshi Shimura, among others, and directed by Ishiro Honda. In the fall before his third year at Harvard Law School, Daron Roberts decided to pursue a career in football coaching and wrote letters to college and professional football teams. The Kansas City Chiefs offered Roberts a training camp internship. He leveraged that unpaid position into an assistant coach position. From Kansas City, Roberts went on to coach with the Detroit Lions, West Virginia Mountaineers and Cleveland Browns. Today Daron serves as founding director of the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation (CSLi) at the University of Texas. As a lecturer at the University of Texas, he focuses on issues of leadership and innovation in the sports arena.

Hello, kaiju lovers! In the latest episode of the “Kong Quest” (which is finally mentioned by name on the air!), Nathan is joined once again by author and “Golden Ticket Tourist” Nick Hayden of the Derailed Trains of Thought podcast to discuss the wacky but fun King Kong Escapes. Like with the 1933 film, this is Nick's first time seeing this 1967 Toho classic, which was the second (and sadly last) of Toho's Kong films, as it was made in the last year they held the rights to the Eighth Wonder. This is a first for the show as it's the first tokusatsu film directed by the great Ishiro Honda covered on the podcast. It's a crazy nexus of ideas borrowed from other productions and some that seemed to anticipate others. For one thing, its villain, Dr. Who, is both a derivation and a precursor to the famous British TV series! Nathan and Nick also note some funny connections to Rankin-Bass' classic holiday special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer given that they collaborated with Toho on this live-action cartoon.
